Lee Three or three and a half stars would be my assessment of this work. let me first say that this is a work of fiction, though the writing style and the language strives to make it feel like a period piece. I was struck several times by the use of modern lingo, which made for an intrusion on the story-telling.Being a work of fiction - and I have to rely on memory here - "Lois" was not the actual, literal subject of the accusations of "Witch" or the punishment of a witch.The story did a decent job of postulating how some accusations of those who were supposed to be witches may have come about, and by whom such accusations may have been leveled. Generally well conceived, and fairly well done.Fairly well written, all in all. Classic literature? No. Worth the read? I think so - and if you;ve not read the period accounts of the witchcraft trials of Salem, or read any works on that extended episode, you owe it to yourself to read and study that, for your edification and insight.

It makes a good case for social and religious prudence and tolerance. It is difficult to believe that religious fervor could have reached such heights during relatively modern times. If you are a fan of history, give this one a read.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I don't like Gaskell's books By Victoire Soulé de Lafont Usually, I don't like Gaskell's books. But Lois was a very beautiful and tragic story. I found myself taken by this story of jealousy, mischief and lust. , it was well placed in the Salem Witch trials. I almost cried at the end. The characters are well drawn. So, I really advise this book, especially to those interested by this sad period of American History.
