Electricity, perhaps the cornerstone of Western civilization in the 20th century and beyond, has a luminous history. The linemen who built the electric power systems stretching across the United States are the unsung heroes of the country's history and progress. Here, the lineman's story is illustrated in comprehensive, fascinating detail for the first time. They faced terrible bouts of weather, rigorously long hours, and dangerously energized power lines, and the job of a power lineman is still considered one of the most dangerous professions. With over 250,000 linemen employed in the U.S. today, their work is no less important now more than a hundred years after the spread of commercial electricity. In a collaborative effort to bring the history of the lineman to the general public across the world, Alan Drew and the Northwest Lineman College (NLC) have created this beautiful depiction of the lineman’s footprint on America. It is a magnificent portrayal of an industry little known by the public, yet which has arguably been as instrumental to the course of U.S. history as the oil or railroading industries. With more than 500 photos and illustrations, The American Lineman: Honoring the Evolution and Importance of One of the Nation's Toughest, Most Admired Professions is the perfect book for anyone affiliated with or intrigued by the power delivery industry and its influence in America.

Review

“The greatest historical collection about the history of linemen ever written.”

Andy PriceExecutive VP of Global Sales, Buckingham Manufacturing Co.

"I was amazed to see how well the history of linemen was laid out. The vast amount of information – displayed in photos, illustrations, graphs and diagrams – and stories of everything from the blackout of 1965 to the role linemen played during the wars will keep anyone, not just linemen, turning the pages."

Jim PennefeatherExecutive VP of Global Sales, Buckingham Manufacturing Co.

It is an amazing book. It is, in itself, a piece of history that fills in all of the blanks one might have about the development of our trade up to this point. Alan has created a masterpiece that explains all aspects of our trade from the birth of telegraph lineman and development of the tools and methods including the art, language and culture of linework up to the in the modern day. Alan is the “Professor of Linework.” If you are a lineman, you really need to own this book… period.

Byron DunnEditor, Powerlineman Magazine

The current conflicts in the Middle East are present-day manifestations of geopolitical dynamics that have been active in the historical process from its beginning. In 108 maps and drawings, The Eastern Question looks at these dynamics through a geopolitical lens with a scope of three millennia, from the days of the Persians and Alexander the Great to today's headlines. The drawings are historical political cartoons; the maps ground the reader in the geography of time and place. In the 19th century, the term the 'Eastern Question' referred to the problem posed by the impending dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, the fall of which in the second decade of the 20th engendered the modern 'muddle' of the Middle East in the 21st. In a larger sense the East has always been a question for the West, for the simple reason that's where the trouble comes from: Huns, Goths, Arabs, Mongols, Turks, Russians, Soviets--to now a less well-defined, 'non-linear,' and 'asymmetric' trouble. As the West declines relatively and the East rises, seemingly new questions are asked that are in fact old ones.

From the Inside Flap AN entertaining, elegant, and whimsical glimpse at a serious subject: the history of  the world, showing how the East has always posed a question to the West    In the 19th century, the term the 'Eastern Question' referred to the problem posed by the inevitable dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, the fall of which in the 20th engendered the modern 'muddle' of the Middle East in the 21st.  In a larger sense the East has always been a Question for the West, for the simple reason that's where the trouble comes from: the Huns, Goths, Arabs, Mongols, Turks, Russians, Soviets, to now another, less well-defined, 'non-linear,' and 'asymmetric' trouble.  As the West declines relatively and the East rises, seemingly new questions are asked that are in fact old ones. The current conflicts in the Middle East are present-day manifestations of geopolitical dynamics that have been active in the historical process from its beginning. In 108 watercolor maps and drawings, The Eastern Question looks at these dynamics  through a geopolitical lens with the scope of three millennia, from the days of the Persians and Alexander the Great to the headlines of today. The drawings are historical political cartoons; the maps ground the reader in the geography of time and place. Painting with a broad brush, the author sketches the story in short texts that explain the drawings while the drawings illustrate the text. What began as a struggle between East and West later emerged as a struggle between Islam and Christendom, and has now re-emerged as a new war -- which is not new at all but is the continuation of the Long War that was fought for centuries and then forgotten by the West with its rise to world dominance. The Eastern Question portrays this story as a drama with stock characters improvising their lines in a plot the action of which has been determined by the dynamics of Desert & Sown, East & West, and Order & Fragmentation. The first half of the book is thematic,  exploring the three dynamics. The second half focuses on one of the six characters, the Ottoman Empire -- of which the modern countries of the Middle East are mere fragments -- its rise, decline, and fall, which opened the Eastern Question; and the concurrent rise of the West to world dominance, now being challenged by the revolt of Islam. With vast perspective and extensive view, The Eastern Question seamlessly connects today's events to dynamics that have been active from the beginning of history.

By Thomas Couser This book is not "about" 9/11, but it was prompted by the terrorist attack on the United States on 9/11. Danforth's response was to survey its deep backstory: centuries, indeed millennia, of conquest and conflict in the Middle East. He is not a professional historian, and that is probably a good thing: although the book is based on an enormous amount of research, Danforth's approach is fresh and open-minded, and his accomplishment is considerable. He manages to keep the big picture in focus even while attending to myriad trees. The writing is clear, sometimes epigrammatic. The maps and drawings are not mere supplemental illustrations; they capsulize history cleverly and memorably. This book manages to condense and distill a large amount of material that spans a great deal of time and space. I can't think of a better book for those seeking an understanding of the present-day conflict that engulfs not just the Middle East but much of the globe.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great Book By DeeDee Fascinating, informative and entertaining account of this complicated area of the world providing the reader with a sound grounding from which to follow current issues in the mid east and Europe. Insightful commentary accompanies the cartoon like hand drawn maps making it delightful read.

I'm only half way through the book so far, but I have gained a much clearer understanding of the geopolitical dynamics of history. It gives you the big picture so you can understand what's going on. The illustrations are excellent. I would recommend it for anyone who wants to understand the background of today's world conflicts.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. biography of Maurice Maeterlinck By Mei This biography of Maurice Maeterlinck (1862-1949) was first published in 1913. It covers the life and works of this Nobelprize for Literature winner from Belgium. In 1932 King Albert I of Belgium enobled him with the titel 'Comte' (so well after this biography was written). Maeterlinck wrote his poetry, plays and prose in French. His works have been translated into many languages. His 'Life of the Bee' ('La vie des abeilles') is one of the best books I have ever read, and I would recommend that work to anyone. This volume has a index and a chronological list of works at the end of the book. Because this book was written more than 30 years before the death of Maeterlinck, it is in no way complete. It is interesting reading though for anyone who wants to know more about Maeterlinck. This book is in the public domain, so it can be downloaded for free from several sites on the web, or it could be read online. As a sample I copy a few lines from the first chapter below:[...]It was in 1885 that he entered the University of Ghent as a student oflaw. Like Lessing and Goethe, he had no respect for his professors. Hewas again a fellow-student of van Lerberghe and Le Roy; they also werestudents of jurisprudence. He was twenty-four when, according to hisparents' wish, he settled in Ghent as an _avocat_; to lose, as GérardHarry puts it, "with triumphant facility the first and last causes whichwere confided to him." His shyness and the thin, squeaking voice in hisrobust peasant's frame were against him in a profession which in anycase he hated. He practised for a year or so, and then--"il a jeté latoque et la robe aux orties."[...](This review is based on the free e-book version by Project Gutenberg.)

CODENAME CUPCAKE is an old fashioned stay-at-home-mom turned super-hero spy novel. It is the story of Molly Peterson, a frazzled mother of two, who is recruited by a super spy agency to infiltrate the PTA at her own son's elementary school. A staunch PTA avoider, Molly is disappointed to learn that her assignment will require her to not only join the PTA but “become” the PTA. Midwood Elementary School is cooling at an alarming rate and Molly must spend as much time as possible in the building to determine the cause and help prevent a potential calamity. With a back drop of ordinary school functions including back to school night and a fall concert, CODENAME CUPCAKE offers a new twist on the superhero genre. It is a send up of motherhood, the PTA, comic books and spy novels. It is fast paced and funny with the underlying message that life really is better when you have super powers.

Review "I was pleasantly surprised to find how the book combines different themes and yet follows one single track. It has got humor and part of that is satirical. What is great about the story is that the pivotal figure is a regular person, a "frazzled mother of two" as the description says and she is definitely lovable! If you're looking for thrill, you'll find quite a lot of that too! I'd say this book is worth checking out! No matter what you prefer reading, Codename Cupcake will entertain you and put a smile on your face!" - The Page Hungry Bookworm"'Cupcake' is a witty spoof of spy thrillers." - The Montclair Times

The chief advantage that would result from the establishment of Socialism is, undoubtedly, the fact that Socialism would relieve us from that sordid necessity of living for others which, in the present condition of things, presses so hardly upon almost everybody. In fact, scarcely anyone at all escapes.

The Soul of Man Under Socialism (annotated), by Oscar Wilde

About the Author Oscar Wilde was born on October 16, 1854, to the Irish nationalist and writer Speranza Wilde and the doctor William Wilde. After graduating from Oxford in 1878, Wilde moved to London, where he became notorious for his sharp wit and flamboyant style of dress. Though he was publishing plays and poems throughout the 1880s, it wasn t until the late 1880s and early 1890s that his work started to be received positively. In 1895, Oscar Wilde was tried for homosexuality and was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison. Tragically, this downfall came at the height of his career, as his plays, An Ideal Husband "and The Importance of Being Earnest, "were playing to full houses in London. He was greatly weakened by the privations of prison life, and moved to Paris after his sentence. Wilde died in a hotel room, either of syphilis or complications from ear surgery, in Paris, on November 30, 1900.

It goes into art, and even pseudo-psychology (one could say). It covers a broad variety of topics in a short amount of pages. I agree with almost everything said in this book. It's definitely worth reading and will really make you think.

8 of 11 people found the following review helpful. You will have to read it more than once. By over the age of youth First: Oscar Wilde is one of my favorite writers of fiction and my very favorite poet. This work at first reading had too many contradictions, so I read it again in its entirety. I got the real gist of it when I reread portions of it several more times. He has expertly dotted qualifiers in his praises of Socialism. I missed the qualifiers which gave rise to the seeming contradictions. Wilde praises Socialism for pages and pages, but quietly qualifies that his praise is for socialism as a very highly desirable but very highly personal system (close to the soul) to go no further than the boundaries of your own family. Take that socialist family structure beyond that boundary and you will have nothing but conflict, discontent, dissatisfaction, etc. Socialism is TOTALLY unworkable beyond self and/or family. Wilde saw it. Now I see what he saw. Read it carefully.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Trenchant Defense of Individual Rights By Dr. Laurence Raw Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Oscar Wilde's polemic is the way in which it summarizes many of the themes explored in his better-known fictional work. In THE SOUL OF MAN UNDER SOCIALISM he calls for the creation of a socialist state in which class-differences simply do not exist: everyone has the chance to pursue their own dreams in a completely free environment. In such a world social pressures are no longer relevant; because everyone is equal, they no longer envy one another, and possessions assume minimal significance. Government - of the kind understood in Victorian Britain, where the monied classes assume automatic power over the less advantaged - can be abandoned in favor of a more egalitarian system in which everyone has the chance to assume equal authority.Such proposals (as other reviewers have remarked) might seem idealistic - even unworkable - but they are part of Wilde's continuing criticism of a society where the aristocrats automatically believed in their right to govern, even if they had no idea how to practice it. Privilege led to arrogance, and this helped to sustain the inequalities that were endemic to Victorian Britain. Wilde also understood the evils of capitalism: although Britain liked to represent itself as "the workshop of the world," its status was founded on inequality, where the masses worked for minimal wages in filthy conditions, while the factory-owners got richer and richer as a result. A truly socialist state would serve to eliminate such class-differences; instead, everyone would learn how to work together for the common good. But Wilde's true sphere of interest lies in the cultivation of the imagination, or the soul, as he terms it. In contemporary Britain most people have neither the chance nor the inclination to develop themselves spiritually, to consider the beauties of the universe, as they have to spend most of their time trying to make ends meet. In a truly socialist society, where everyone was happy, more time and opportunity would be provided for contemplation, to understand the true nature of beauty and thereby develop the imaginative faculties. This could only lead to the enrichment of society as a whole. Wilde understands how romantic poets such as Shelley, Byron and Coleridge managed to achieve this state of mind in the past; but they had the financial and social opportunities to pursue their interests. Wilde wants that privilege to be extended to everyone.THE SOUL OF MAN UNDER SOCIALISM might seem somewhat idealistic, but in terms of Victorian history it can be read as a trenchant critique of capitalism and associated iniquities such as colonialism and exploitation. Wilde believed that everyone should be given true freedom of expression, something he himself was denied later on in the 1890s (THE SOUL OF MAN APPEARED in 1891), when he was arrested for so-called "debauched" practices. The way in which he was treated by the British authorities only served to emphasize the importance of his demands, as expressed in this work.

For many years, cooking has been my passion. Since a little girl growing up in Carthage, Mississippi, I always enjoyed cooking in the kitchen and helping my grandmother. We would prepare food for all types of events, you name it, and we were there bringing delicious meals. Approaching college, I could not figure out what I wanted to do with my life. Did I want to be a nurse, teacher or lawyer? I wanted to help people and I loved to entertain so I knew I wanted to reach people, but in what way? During my freshman year is where cooking became my therapy. Being away from my grandmother's hot meals, to eating fast foods was devastating! I began to cook for myself and my fellow roommates. This is when I knew I wanted to become a cook and share my unique style of flavors and recipes. After becoming a top 6 finalist on Season 12 of the Hit Series "Hell's Kitchen" I began to focus on different types of gourmet appetizers, meals, and desserts. Each one of these recipes was inspired by different experiences in my life. I hope you enjoy and thanks to everyone for their influences and continuous support! Much Love, Kashia Zollicoffer

THE object of a Constitution like that of the United States is to establish certain fundamentals of government in such a way that they cannot be altered or destroyed by the mere will of a majority of the people, or by the ordinary processes of legislation. The framers of the Constitution saw the necessity of making a distinction between these fundamentals and the ordinary subjects of law-making, and accordingly they, and the people who gave their approval to the Constitution, deliberately arrogated to themselves the power to shackle future majorities in regard to the essentials of the system of government which they brought into being. They did this with a clear consciousness of the object which they had in view--the stability of the new government and the protection of certain fundamental rights and liberties. But they did not for a moment entertain the idea of imposing upon future generations, through the extraordinary sanctions of the Constitution, their views upon any special subject of ordinary legislation. Such a proceeding would have seemed to them far more monstrous, and far less excusable, than that tyranny of George III and his Parliament which had given rise to the American Revolution.

What Prohibition Has Done to America, by Fabian Franklin

About the Author Fabian Franklin (1853-1939) was born in Hungary January 18, 1853, and immigrated with his family to the United States in 1855, settling in Philadelphia, and moving in 1861 to Washington, D.C. He graduated from Columbian College in 1869, and received an honorary Doctor of Laws from Columbian University in 1904. He first trained to become a civil engineer but later entered Johns Hopkins University and earned a Ph.D. in mathematics (1880). He married Christine Ladd, a professor of psychology and logic at Columbia University, in 1882. He remained at Johns Hopkins teaching mathematics from 1879-95, then left to become editor with the Baltimore News, where he remained until 1908. He left that position to become associate editor of the New York Evening Post, where he remained until 1917. Franklin developed a firm opposition to radical politics, and to socialism, in particular. During the First World War he founded a new periodical, called The Review, which merged in 1922 with another paper called The Independent. He wrote a number of books in addition to Plain Talks On Economics. He died January 9, 1939.

Winters After reading a couple of articles on the benefits of fermented foods, I thought I’d check this eBook out for more in depth info. I liked that the book has info I didn’t know before, like the fact that genetic material can benefit from eating fermented foods. I knew about the connection between fermented foods and behavior, but I didn’t know that diabetics have different bacteria in the gut than non-diabetics. So, I definitely give the book an A+ for having educational info. The book’s layout is good. It covers all the important topics, even the history of the practice. The illustrations were a nice touch (I’m a stickler for visuals). I like that the book stresses that need for a sterile environment when fermenting foods, and I the general guidelines are useful. I like that the book has listings of fermented foods people are already eating (some of I was unaware). But, I would have liked more recipes or a bit about how the common foods are actually fermented. The recipes that are in the book are pretty awesome (one for sauerkraut in particular I want to try). But, my personal preference has me wanting more info on how to use fermented foods in everyday recipes. The book is a very easy read, and it’s complete, covering fermenting since its use in ancient history to modern day uses. The history section was quite thorough, but not at all excessive as the remainder of the book moved into modern day fermenting techniques, health benefits, and recipes. The author includes some reviewed studies as evidence for the positive benefits of eating fermented foods. It’s an ideal ebook for anyone interested in learning the basics of fermenting, the health benefits of fermented foods, and some easy recipes to try. The recipe instructions are easy to understand, and the writing in general is well written. I recommend this book if you want to start looking into adding more fermented foods into your diet. The book is a good stepping-stone to your research on the subject.

I am a big fan of cooking and making things at home, so this book fit right into my areas of interest. I liked that the author gave the history and background of fermented foods, the simple lay-man's scientific answers to how they are created, and the importance of fermented foods for our health. The author also provides effective safety instructions on how to start fermenting foods at home and included recipes that are good for the whole family. I am actually looking into buying one of the fermenting crocks suggested in the book. Overall, this book deserves five starsA few comments to the author:1. Most people do not know what the word anaerobic means (I do because I am a bio major). Define it when you use it.2. I am getting weird results when I search for ``fermenting release valve`` that has nothing to do with fermenting foods. Maybe you could look into this.

If you are anything like me, then you probably thought that fermentation is just a stage in the process of making beer. I was told that there is much more to fermentation and fermenting foods, in terms of getting tasty and healthy food, but to be honest, I was not quite convinced. And then came this eBook!Hats off to the author for writing an easy to understand guide for fermenting foods in your own home. The process itself is described in plain English, so you do not have to be a scientist to understand what is going on. There is also a brief look in the history of fermenting foods, making it clear that this is not some new trend set by celebrities, but dating from the ancient times. You will also find valuable information on how to start fermenting foods by yourself, at your own home, and of course what are the common mistakes that can be made. And to top this great guide off, there are a couple of recipes to try out! Great eBook!

These essays are offered as an introduction to the Shakespeare Authorship Question. They are a distillation of the many works that I have read since 2003, and are intended for the general reader. In the first essay I give fifty-five reasons why William Shakspere, the man from Stratford, cannot have been the true author of the Works of William Shakespeare. The second essay offers fifty-two reasons why Edward de Vere, the Seventeenth Earl of Oxford, was Shakespeare. The third essay explores the secret identity of Edward de Vere, i.e., why even his recently excavated biography as the shining but shrouded Seventeenth Earl of Oxford does not fully explain who he was. The fourth essay explores his relationship to the Third Earl of Southampton and defends the author’s insights into the meaning and genesis of The Sonnets. The fifth essay is a brief biography of Shakespeare based on the knowledge that many scholars and researchers have uncovered since 1920.

Ray Because of its brevity and devotion to historical fact, this is the best short study by which the interested reader, previously unacquainted with the Shakespeare authorship question, might gain a good comprehension. The expanded edition pursues inferences into the life of the true author which explain why the Stratford phenom hoax was considered advisable by de Vere's relatives when they published the First Folio. In these passages, the author does not eschew plausible conclusions which are assiduously avoided in conventional histories.
