In this pioneering study of one of the few poets to grow rich from his poetry alone, Dr. Hagen draws on previously unpublished personal and business correspondence and on accounts at the Tennyson Research Centre and in his publishers' archives. The first book devoted to the people and circumstances surrounding the publications of a major Victorian poet, Tennyson and His Publishers illuminates the forces of the poet. Publishing forces described include the vagaries of audience and market, the idiosyncrasies of publishers, the exigencies of family and household, the fluctuations of reputation, and the fear of piracy. The milieu in which these forces worked included both publishers (Moxon, Strahan, King, Kegan Paul, Macmillan) and nonpublishers (Hallam, FitzGerald, Knowles, Emily Tennyson). In each chapter, besides commenting on the poems and persons concerned, Dr. Hagen explains negotiations, details agreements, reports on editions, and gives available information on sales and income. Some of the figures are surprising, as is Tennyson's transformation from struggling artist to wealthy landowner solely through the outpouring of ink and inspiration.

I think they can assume I am in favor of it! But there is actually something I can write which is not too prejudiced by my situation: since the book was published in 1979, no one else has tackled the same topic in book-length form, which means if you want to read about how a famous poet managed to make a fine living by his verse, and if you are interested in 19th century British publishing by major houses such as Macmillan and Kegan Paul, you will need to use my book. It has illustrations--photos and print reproductions, too.

"[...] Dorothy stood up bravely and agreed to call out, when they should be too near the river. Suddenly there was a crash, and then the horses bolted! "Something snapped!" called Dorothy. "Something is broken!" No need to announce this, for, with the ominous sound, one of the horses broke from its traces, and the other was now dragging the old wagon along by the straps that had withstood the jerks and plunges. "Oh, we will be killed!" screamed Nita, "There's the river!"[...]".

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Old syndicate series for girls By Miss Carol Even though this story was only written 2 years before the Outdoor Girls series (this story was originally published in 1911), this book seems more preachy and moralistic than the other story. It's about 2 girls who are said to be friends, although one of them is the perfect good girl and the other is the wild, stage-struck girl who needs to be changed. They go camping with another friend in the Maine woods. They have adventures that include poaching and escapees from a near-by insane asylum (which seem even more unrealistic than the story deserves to me). But just reading the differences between now and then makes it interesting reading.

Based on the brief summary of the book in the advertisement it was close enough in description to what I wanted to research. I usually only buy reference type books preferring books about life in the United States in the late 19th century to the early 20th century. This is a hard to find item locally and the price on Amazon was much lower that other sources of this type of book. I bought an original copy and not this reprint version.

Southern California is sandwiched between two tectonic plates with an ever-shifting boundary. Over the last several million years, movements of these plates have dramatically reshuffled the Earth’s crust to create rugged landscapes and seascapes riven with active faults. Movement along these faults triggers earthquakes and tsunamis, pushes up mountains, and lifts sections of coastline. Over geologic time, beaches come and go, coastal bluffs retreat, and the sea rises and falls. Nothing about Southern California’s coast is stable.Surf, Sand, and Stone tells the scientific story of the Southern California coast: its mountains, islands, beaches, bluffs, surfing waves, earthquakes, and related phenomena. It takes readers from San Diego to Santa Barbara, revealing the evidence for how the coast's features came to be and how they are continually changing. With a compelling narrative and clear illustrations, Surf, Sand, and Stone outlines how the coast will be altered in the future and how we can best prepare for it.

Review "With a compelling narrative and clear illustrations, "Surf, Sand, and Stone" outlines how the coast will be altered in the future and how we can best prepare for it."--Ian Paulsen"Birdbooker Report" (01/07/2016)"

From the Inside Flap “Meldahl takes the reader on a tour of coastal Southern California, deftly explaining its complex geologic history, coastal geology, surfing spots, and the processes that shape them. Richly illustrated and told with great humor and enlightening analogies, Surf, Sand, and Stone is easily accessible yet contains valuable resources for those who want to delve deeper.” —Mark Johnsson, staff geologist, California Coastal Commission “How refreshing to discover a book about Southern California’s complex geology that is written for those of us who want to learn, but who do not have a strong background in this field. I’ll take this excellent guide with me whenever I go exploring.” —Joan Easton Lentz, author of A Naturalist’s Guide to the Santa Barbara Region"Surf, Sand, and Stone is an entertaining and very readable explanation of the complex geology and oceanography of the Southern California coast. Meldahl must be an excellent teacher as he has a real gift for writing about complex topics in a comfortable, engaging, and fascinating manner." —Gary Griggs, Director, Institute of Marine Sciences, UC Santa Cruz

About the Author Keith Heyer Meldahl is Professor of Geology and Oceanography at Mira Costa College and the author of two popular books, Hard Road West and Rough-Hewn Land (UC Press, 2011).

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Geologic forces are alive and well and active. Want a geologist's explanation of how surfing works? It's here! By lyndonbrecht This is an unusual book--geology made not only comprehensible but almost fun. Meldahl's writing is extremely good and sometimes funny, and he explains very clearly a sizable number of difficult concepts. There are many graphics, diagrams and photos, and they are unusually good at helping a reader understand the text. California has complex geology, as does its coast. The book does in fact explain why the coast is the way it is. He covers it all: continental drift, rising and falling sea levels, earthquakes, tsunamis, subduction zones, ocean currents. Meldahl is a college professor and if he teaches as well as he writes, his classes must always be full. The book's format is more or less taking a class on a field trip, as he states in the preface. The graphics emphasize that. Among other detail, he explains how that in 15 million years Los Angeles will be next to San Francisco, or in another scenario, LA will be a bit west of Reno on a large island while Reno has become a coastal city. Meldahl makes that future entertaining. Another intriguing detail is the chapter on tsunamis, in which he describes one hitting Long Beach, explaining how the geologic structure interacts with waves and what would happen to the port. The book is excellent throughout, but I found two chapters especially interesting. Chapter 5, "Waves and Surfing" explains how waves work and why certain points in Southern California are excellent for surfing. Chapter 6 concerns beach erosion and coastal bluffs, which incudes discussion of how expensive property on seaside bluffs can be secured through a complex process; the chapter also includes discussion of beach erosion and replenishment. He does this matter-of-factly, without the strong environmental bias some books on the subject have. He is nonetheless an environmentalist in the sense of anticipating global warming and its effects, and also in his long-term view, almost a necessity in a professional geologist.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. If you live in Southern California and you like the beach, you should buy this book! By KB Ocean I just read this book and had a difficult time putting it down. The author begins with a simple observation about puzzling geology in Southern California and then later describes the mystery. I have a basic knowlegde of geology of the area but I understand a great deal more now. What I like most is how Meldahl puts things into perspective in geologic time and his many analogies that help the reader to understand the complexities of California geology. At the back of the book Meldahl makes suggestions on places to visit and the interesting geology for each place. I'm hoping to go visit a few.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Excellent explanation of California geology. By NEZ Dr. Meldahl has a gift for explaining complex subjects easily. Lots of diagrams so people can visualize the concepts. His writing style is very clear.

Written during his time in Reading Gaol, De Profundis is Oscar Wilde's moving letter to Lord Alfred Douglas, whose relationship with Wilde led to the poet's imprisonment. Here Wilde repudiates Lord Alfred and reflects on his ordeal, acknowledging how the depths of his sorrow have helped liberate him towards a fuller, freer wisdom. Brimming with beautiful passages, De Profundis is a profound and inspiring treatise on the meaning of suffering.

Even during the Revolution, he remains fiercely loyal to the monarchy, though it costs him great financial loss. When Louis XVIII is restored to the throne of France, the Comte hopes to receive some compensation for the money spent and property taken during his efforts fighting for the royal family. When he makes the acquaintance of the King, he is disappointed at not receiving the restitution he hoped for. Instead, what he gets in return is a personal friendship with the King, who helps advise the Comte on how to update his antiquated notions and keep up with the times. France is not the same as it was before the rise of republicanism; even Louis XVIII can admit this. In former days the Comte would have only married his children to members of the titled nobility, but under the King's guidance he prudently consents to marry his sons and daughters into the nouveau riche families of bankers and civil servants. By doing so, the Comte improves his financial outlook considerably. His youngest daughter, Emilie, however, sees herself as above such a compromise. Raised a spoiled child, she has grown into a beautiful but stuck-up young woman. Emilie has incredibly high standards for the man she will marry, and at the top of her unreasonable list of criteria is that he absolutely must be a peer of France. After several aborted attempts to find her a match, the Comte wonders if he has any hope of sealing a matrimonial deal for his troublesome daughter. The Ball at Sceaux, originally published in 1830, is one of the earliest works in Balzac's Comedie Humaine. Balzac wrote for a mass audience, so his works are usually quite accessible to the general reader. However, historical and political concepts that were common knowledge to the audience of his time are now lost on many of today's readers, particularly those outside of France. He often writes about the clashes between persons of differing political persuasions and social classes. Often in order to understand what he is talking about, the reader must have a basic understanding of French history, particularly the events surrounding the Revolution. This is more true of The Ball at Sceaux than for most of his works. If you don't have a solid orientation into the time period you are going to be lost.Another problem plaguing this novella is that one of the main characters, Emilie, is not very likeable at all. The reader is not inclined to care whether she finds true love or not. Nevertheless, the concern one feels in regards to the successful completion of the young woman's marriage stems not from any affinity for her but rather out of sympathy for her father, the Comte de Fontaine. The Ball at Sceaux is kind of a hard work to get into. It starts out rather slowly, establishing a lot of elaborate context. Halfway through the book the reader wonders if there will ever be a ball, or if the story will ever get to Sceaux, a suburb of Paris where the wealthy have their country houses. Ultimately, however, the reader need have no fear, because the second half of the story is much more engaging than the first. Towards the end it offers some unexpected developments, and Balzac wraps it all up with a satisfying conclusion.Though it's not his best work by any means, The Ball at Sceaux is a good, solid story that fans of Balzac will enjoy. I would not recommend it as a starting point for those who have never read Balzac, and if you're not familiar with your French history, you'd better look up the Revolution on Wikipedia and bone up on the basics.

A loyal royalist, he retired to his lands in Bretagne after the revolution; he returned to Paris after Napoleon fell and Louis XVIII reclaimed the throne. He acquired some power during the Restauration but the only way he could provide for his children was to marry them well. His two boys and his two elder daughters happily follow his guidance, but the spoiled but bright Emilie proves herself picky. She will marry a Peer of the Realm or she will marry no one.Leaving Paris for the summer, as all good families do, they go to Sceaux. At the local ball, Emilie falls in love with a charming, beautifully mannered, elegant young man. Is he noble? Will he bestow a title on his wife? Will it matter if he turns out to be a commoner?Balzac develops his plot and moral in a fairly by-the-book manner, but he nevertheless surprises us by making us feel empathy for snobs and royalists. We might not feel much sympathy for Emilie's plight, but we do feel much for that of her father and family.Vincent Poirier, Fort LauderdaleDisclaimer: I read this book in the original French.

Very happy with cookbook - I purchased another (for casseroles and am very happy with that, too). I may buy others in this series as well. Macey seems to have put a lot of time into selecting recipes that have wide appeal. Would definitely buy this cookbook again! :-)

19 of 20 people found the following review helpful. German cooking this is not! -- By Tina I'm assuming (correct me if I'm wrong) that this book was written by an American with either some German heritage or German friends. Many of the recipes sound like someone's vivid imagination of what German cooking might look like and sound like, but that doesn't make it real. Some recipes actually still look like they could have been original several generations ago before they were adapted and made convenient for the American palate.Being German myself, I cringed already at the title of this supposed German cook book. The author is clearly not German and could at least have made the effort to use google translate rather than making up phrases when they didn't have a clue of the German language. It should read "fuer dich" rather than "for du", "sehr gut", not "suhr gut". I live abroad now but would not recommend this book to any of my international friends who might want to try out German cooking. That's because this book doesn't cover German cooking. For the sake of clarity, here are just a few of the many things in this book I take issue with:- It starts with the first recipe which requires flour tortillas, tortillas of course being the most German ingredient imaginable (excuse the sarcasm, but hey, what does a German know about German cooking...).- Second recipe: Have you ever tried to buy cheddar cheese in Germany? If it doesn't exist there, odds are that the traditional recipes don't include any.- Next: Hash browns, Jimmy Dean sausages, peanut butter (while now available, definitely not a German product) - has the author ever even had German food before??- How are granola bars German? Granted, you can buy them anywhere nowadays but that doesn't make them a specific nationality. And think about the ingredients in the recipe - do coconuts grow in Germany? Unlikely in a country with less than tropical -10 degress Celsius or below in winter.- Pink watermelon pickles? Just because we have Sauerkraut doesn't mean we pickle everything we can get our hands on!- Many of the recipes are definitely NOT German, irrespective of the author putting the word "German" in front of it. If it worked this way, I could write a Korean cook book by putting "Korean" in front of the random recipes I would choose for it!I only got to page 22, and having initially gone over the contents list I didn't think there was any merit in looking through the book any further. I am glad it was free as I would have been loath to pay anything for this, and will delete the book from my Kindle soonest. If you want to try some fairytale, once-upon-a-time vaguely Germanic-come-American cooking, this is the book for you. If you want to cook authentic German dishes, there are many more useful books out there.I have noticed that the author has published several other international cooking books, and while I haven't purchased any of them, it is hard to believe that they would have been more diligent with their other culinary writing than with this particular book.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great Concept Marred by Pook Cooking, Poor writing. By Steve Thomas This book starts out with recipe for cinnamon crispas. Sorry, but ant food based on tortillas is NOT german. The potato soup calls for rice milk. The radish salad depends on Japanese radishes. Most of the recipes are in english measure, but some are in metric. I noticed one uses both. These aren't the author's tried and true recipes, these are cut-and-paste, One specifies a branded sausage, but it's different on that brand's website. Are these changes things she found to tadte better - or was she just trying to avoid accusations of plagiarism? There are a lot of recipes omitted that ought to be in a book on german comfort food. There's no recipe for potato salad, german or otherwise, There's no recipe for snitz und knepp, indeed no recipes calling for snitz at all. No recipe for roasts, none using turnips, no recipe for cole slaw, and the only recipe calling for sauerkraut eequests "Bavarian sauerkraut" which isn't sauer at all - it's polluted with brown sugar and sherry. There are simply no substitutes for tomatoes in tomato soup, and a foreign cuisine may demand hard-to-find ingredients, but why noty suggest wheat stout if you cannot find an unfiltered wheat beer? There are some pretty questionable cooking choices here. Thawing hashed browns costs more and is more hassle than shredding potatoes - and because they dehydrate in the freezer, and are wet once thawed, they end up *steaming* instead of frying. If you mix fructose and egg substitute, then add margarine, you end up with pseudo-food; mixing sugar and eggs, adding butter gives a real food without those dangerous trans fats.I see a lot of cookbooks by good cooks who can't write and edit. I see many others by good writers/editors that lack cooking skills. What can I say/ Food Network Virus that has everyone convinced they can have fame abd fortune when, in fact, most cooks, even the really good ones, work lousy hours in unpleasant and hazardous conditions, for fairly litt;e pay. But I don't trust this cookbook. The concept is great. There would be a market for a good German comfort food cookbook - and not, all tyhat remains is to write une

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic book By sallyann cole These are the recipes I ate growing up in a German Canadian community. The book is fun to read and the recipes are varied and delicious (so far). Cooked the Weiner Goulash recipe tonight and we wanted to drink the sauce out of the dutch oven - it was so good. Not particularly gourmet or light in style (did you expect "lite" German food?) but everything is made from scratch, directions are clear and there are wonderful photos and stories accompanying the recipes. I'll give this 5 stars because it's such delightful cookbook and I've yet to see anything else resembling it on the market.

Hopefully it will be read and followed by many craft breweries (and other craft beverage and food producers), as it will take the quality of their production processes and final products to the consistent (!) and reliable quality levels that consumers deserve (and will expect in the future)! My only complaint (took off one star for that) is the price: $95 (cover price and online price from a national association) is hopelessly overpriced. I bought new from Amazon for significantly less, but thought even that price was still high.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. I was hoping to see more test methods/ procedures. ... By jgrivna I was hoping to see more test methods/ procedures. This book is more just about how to manage a quality program.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. but I believe it is a great summary and guide for professionals By Jason Dahl Disclaimer: I am a homebrewer who happens to have an interest in lab science etc and am helping out my brother who works for a real brewery spin up a QA/QC program. This book was of little value to the average homebrewer, but I believe it is a great summary and guide for professionals. Gives great plans and examples for breweries looking to step up their QC game.

"[...]William's neighborhood, to be quite gratuitously heroic. William James and his wife and the youngest child were alone in the Chocorua cottage for a few days, picnicking by themselves without any servant. They had no horse; at that season of the year hours often went by without any one passing the house; there was no telephone, no neighbor within a mile, no good doctor within eighteen miles. It was quite characteristic of James that he should think such conditions ideal for testing an unknown drug on himself. There would be no interruptions. He had no fear. He was impatient to satisfy his curiosity about the promised hallucinations of color. But the effects of one dose were, for a while, much more alarming than his letter would give one to understand. To Henry James. CHOCORUA, June 11, 1896.[...]".

Read it like a novel By John Welch William Jmaes was a brilliant everything, member of a brilliant family. This two-volume work reprints the lrss-techncal of James' letters, gather and introduced by his son, Henry.Although it lacks of the handy navigation widgets, The Letters don't need them so much. Start at the beginning and read through. Don;t hunt for one letter...better to get to a university library for the recent Hardvard collection...which has bios of James'es corresponents.Meanwhile, get this, because you can't beat he orice. Read it clean through. James rote wonderful letters, and here they are for almost nothing. For a heavier James, get Ralph Barton Perry's giant two-volume "Thought and Character" from a second-hand shop, and prepare to annotate. This collection is for reading. Add Ralph Richardson's bio,. and you are almost inside the most remarkable literary family in America. Read to enjoy. Also look for the diary of sister Alice ("she's one of us!" excalimed Henry to William, and he was right. Took them a long to to realize it, but The only ay to understand the strange and brilliant family is to dive in. Stat here.

In the songs and bubble feeding of humpback whales; in young killer whales learning to knock a seal from an ice floe in the same way their mother does; and in the use of sea sponges by the dolphins of Shark Bay, Australia, to protect their beaks while foraging for fish, we find clear examples of the transmission of information among cetaceans. Just as human cultures pass on languages and turns of phrase, tastes in food (and in how it is acquired), and modes of dress, could whales and dolphins have developed a culture of their very own? Unequivocally: yes. In The Cultural Lives of Whales and Dolphins, cetacean biologists Hal Whitehead, who has spent much of his life on the ocean trying to understand whales, and Luke Rendell, whose research focuses on the evolution of social learning, open an astounding porthole onto the fascinating culture beneath the waves. As Whitehead and Rendell show, cetacean culture and its transmission are shaped by a blend of adaptations, innate sociality, and the unique environment in which whales and dolphins live: a watery world in which a hundred-and-fifty-ton blue whale can move with utter grace, and where the vertical expanse is as vital, and almost as vast, as the horizontal. Drawing on their own research as well as a scientific literature as immense as the sea—including evolutionary biology, animal behavior, ecology, anthropology, psychology, and neuroscience—Whitehead and Rendell dive into realms both humbling and enlightening as they seek to define what cetacean culture is, why it exists, and what it means for the future of whales and dolphins. And, ultimately, what it means for our future, as well.

The Cultural Lives of Whales and Dolphins, by Hal Whitehead, Luke Rendell

Review “In every generation, there are some scientists who transcend the strictures of their disciplines, who decline to be confined by ordinary thinking. Whitehead and Rendell are two such people, for our own time. Perhaps it is something to do with the enigmatic beauty of the animals they study. Or perhaps their own brains are better evolved than the rest of ours. Whatever the reason, this book is an astonishing, unconstrained exploration of the nature and practice of cetacean culture. Placing it side by side with human culture, the authors show that the expression of ideas is not limited to humans or primates. Exciting, witty, with its finger—or should that be flipper?—ever on the pulse, wearing its profundity with a wonderful lightness of touch, The Cultural Lives of Whales and Dolphins is a revolutionary book. Transcending the notion of a ‘science’ book, it contains explosive new concepts for our understanding not only of whales, our watery cousins, but of our own selves, too.” (Philip Hoare author of "The Whale" and "The Sea Inside")“Whitehead and Rendell tie together decades of research and observations of cetacean behavior, add in other compelling examples of culture in animals, and relate this to what we think of as culture. This work is unique, and I plan to quote parts of it for years to come. For anyone with an interest in how whales and dolphins live their lives, this is a must read.” (Charles “Flip” Nicklin photographer and author of "Among Giants: A Life with Whales")“An amazing book. . . . Outstanding, not just because it regales the reader with the many insights the pair have gained from their decades of research, patiently watching whale behavior, but also because it challenges us to consider those ever-present cultural forces that shape us all into modern human beings, similar and unique as we all are.” (Philippa Brakes, Whale and Dolphin Conservation WHALE&DOLPHIN)“There are few environments that are more hostile and present more of a challenge to mammals than the ocean. This is precisely why, Whitehead and Rendell argue in their new book The Cultural Lives of Whales and Dolphins, just like us, knowledge is also a vital currency for these marine mammals. . . . At times it is a humorous journey through aspects of human behaviour and ‘decision making,’ resulting as it does from cultural pressures. But this apparent irreverence is not without deeper meaning and strong intent. . . . They provide some sobering insights into those ubiquitous cultural forces that shape us all into modern human beings and at times can leave you reeling with questions about your own free will. This is an exceptional book; it will no doubt irritate some anthropologist who believe that culture is the domain of humans alone; it may even rile some theologians; but far, far more importantly it will help to bridge the gap between humans and other species, speaking as it does to the evolutionary continuum and demonstrating with sound scientific evidence that there are some extraordinary non-human cultures being played out in the natural world. . . . This very book can be considered itself an experiment in social transmission. The question is, will we get the message?” (Philippa Brakes, Whale and Dolphin Conservation Huffington Post UK)“Humans, though arguably the masters of culture, are not the only species that has it. Dolphins, as the authors reveal, create signature whistles and can mimic and remember others’ even twenty years later. They can also learn tail-walking in captivity and then teach it in the wild. Whales possess dialects that change in a way that can only be explained as the result of learning. And both whales and dolphins behave in ‘obviously altruistic’ ways. Dolphins and whales have saved humans stranded at sea, and humpback whales have been observed saving seals from killer whales. . . . Whitehead and Rendell deeply analyze the importance of culture to evolution, exploring what can be learned from animals that are perhaps more advanced than humans before pushing ‘off to sea again, where there is still so much to learn.’” (Publishers Weekly)“I’ve been anxiously waiting for The Cultural Lives of Whales and Dolphins to arrive and consumed it last night and early this morning. (It was far better than my coffee!) Of course, I look forward to rereading it many times for it is that good. . . . Scholarly yet easy to read, and incredibly well referenced. . . . The authors provide ample examples of nonhuman culture . . . and also discuss what we know about topics such as the moral lives of animals and others that are making people think twice about just whom other animals are and what we know about their fascinating and highly evolved cognitive and emotional lives. . . . The skeptics, if any still linger, will have to offer more than something like their dismissive claim, ‘Oh, whales and dolphins and other animals are only acting as if they have culture, but they don’t.’ They clearly do. . . . An outstanding book. . . . The Cultural Lives of Whales and Dolphins is destined to become a classic.” (Marc Bekoff Psychology Today)“Whitehead and Rendell cover cetacean culture from its earliest beginnings to the present day. The authors include research they completed as well as some from other scientists to discover that cetaceans communicate by adapting to the unique environment in which they live, investigating the broad concepts of culture, community, and social learning before applying them to whales and dolphins. Also discussed are the implications of the creatures’ culture as it relates to ecosystems and conservation and the future of the cetacean world, including what it bodes for humans. . . . A captivating book for readers of all levels, from curious laypeople to scientists. . . .  Recommended for both undergraduate and graduate students; researchers; and scholars studying biology, zoology, and veterinary science; and anyone interested in learning about animal behavior.” (Tina Chan, SUNY Oswego Library Journal)“This research round-up on cetacean culture opens with a description of one of nature’s great arias: the ‘high sweeping squeals, low swoops, barking, and ratchets’ of the humpback whale. That song, argue cetacean biologists Hal Whitehead and Luke Rendell, is the best evidence of culture in this intriguing family, because it is an indicator of social learning in action—communal singing evolves over time and changes radically over individuals’ lifetimes. Fascinating findings litter this sober treatise, from sperm whales snacking off fishing longlines to the ‘Star Wars vocalisation’ of dwarf minkes.” (Barbara Kiser Nature)“Whitehead and Rendell suggest that for tens of millions of years—until the rise of modern humans—the most sophisticated cultures on Earth were those of whales. . . . If culture is as important to whales as it appears, then conservationists will need to protect not just their genetic diversity but their cultural diversity as well. All this speculation is underlain by a wealth of biological detail, all carefully annotated, making this book a valuable—and usually very readable—resource for anyone interested in cetacean behaviour.” (Bob Holmes New Scientist)“Noted . . . . Explores the communication techniques and sense of culture developed by different species of whales.” (Jeremy Mikula Chicago Tribune, Printers Row)“Provocative, brilliant. . . . The final chapters of this groundbreaking and beautifully produced book pose stunning questions, and tease out outrageous answers. If culture exists in cetaceans, have they developed an equivalent moral sense of right and wrong? Yes, say the authors. Whales and dolphins observe rituals of the dead and exhibit grief. Could they, then, express spiritual sentiment, founded on values and belief—even a sense of religion? Perhaps. All this only underlines a pressing need to address the notion of non-human rights for such animals. . . . Whitehead and Rendell write with wit and good humour as they take on their critics.” (Philip Hoare, author of "The Whale" and "The Sea Inside" Guardian)“Convincingly dig[s] into critiques and alternative explanations for whale and dolphin behavior, providing a detailed look at the debate over whether culture exists among the animals. Whitehead and Rendell pack the text with references, keeping the book scrupulously rooted in scientific evidence. . . . For readers who are curious about whales and dolphins in the wild, the book offers a thorough grounding.” (Science News)“Written with an absolutely marvelous inquisitive brio. Whitehead and Rendell don’t just bring two lifetimes of experience with sea life and animal cognition to their task—they also write up the fruits of that experience with captivating energy. . . . They display an open-mindedness on their chosen subject that’s admirable and rare. . . . The book’s insights fly at the reader with a speed and frequency I haven’t seen since Richard Dawkins’ The Ancestor’s Tale, and all this fascinating information derives from what Whitehead and Rendell are the first to admit is a necessarily limited sampling. . . . The Cultural Lives of Whales and Dolphins might be only a glimpse into the world of its subjects, but it’s one of the best glimpses popular science has yet given us. It’s invigorating, revelatory reading.” (Steve Donoghue Open Letters Monthly)“In this revolutionary book, destined to become a classic, the authors show that ‘culture’ is information that flows between animals; it is socially learned and shared within a community. . . . The book gives readers a captivating insight into the various ways that dolphins communicate with each other using a wide variety of signals, such as doing upside-down lob tails—slamming the top of their flukes onto the surface of the water—which appears to signal the dolphins’ arrival at a particular destination. . . . This social learning, memory, and communication are a clear example of information flow and culture. I encourage you to embark on a fascinating journey of discovery and a beautiful insight into the world of whales and dolphins: without doubt, some of the most intelligent, beautiful, and remarkable creatures to inhabit this earth.” (Kris Hjalmarsson Whale and Dolphin Conservation Blog, Whales.org)“Recent publication of interest. . . . To Whitehead and Rendell, culture is ‘a flow of information moving from animal to animal’ and, thus, communication among whales and dolphins means they have a culture. This book addresses the questions of whether whales and dolphins really have cultures, what evidence indicates the presence of culture, what adaptations led to their cultures, what effect their cultures will have on the ecology of the oceans and conservation, and, finally, how the cultures affect these animals’ treatments by humans.” (Ecology)“The anthropologist Joe Henrich . . . showed how cultural differences shape cognitive differences in people. A new book, The Cultural Lives of Whales and Dolphins, by the biologists Whitehead and Rendell, calls out researchers like Henrich for treating culture as uniquely human. Their own decades of research indicates social learning among animals. For example, they note, whale pods in different parts of the world have developed regional singing styles.” (Pacific Standard)“Whitehead and Rendell mesh their own research from several decades of cetacean studies with investigation and theory from the biological, physical, and social sciences. This wealth of experience is distilled into a simple thesis: whale and dolphin culture exists, and it matters—for the survival of cetacean species, for the management of marine ecosystems, and for the way we conceive of human culture. Whitehead and Rendell’s work is ambitious in scope, yet careful in its presentation. . . . They define key terms precisely, and employ them consistently. They are also meticulous in separating evidence from interpretation. . . . In its evocative and richly annotated examination of the evolutionary interplay between environment and social learning, The Cultural Lives of Whales and Dolphins makes a compelling case that we can learn much more about cetaceans and about human cultures by exploring what we have in common—such as a predisposition to learn from our grandmothers—rather than by insisting on what sets us apart.” (Darcy Dobell Hakai Magazine)“A stunning account that enriches our understanding of cetacean behaviour and complicates in profound ways the claims of human exceptionalism. . . . The authors present knowledge hard-won from their own decades of studying sperm whales, analyse comparable material from other long-term cetacean research, and offer informed speculation where the data still fall short of hard conclusions. The book represents a gorgeously choreographed dance that depends on balancing what we know for certain about the cultures of whales and dolphins with what seems highly probable but must still be considered speculative. . . . The Cultural Lives of Whales and Dolphins is an illuminating look at the lives of cetaceans who think, who feel, and whose lives are profoundly communal. There’s no mysticism here, but there is mystery.” (Barbara J. King, author of “How Animals Grieve” Times Literary Supplement)“These days I’m very seldom excited by a trade non-fiction title, roaring as most of them are down the middle lane of the same motorway, to the degree I’m excited by the original and vital byways that university presses are exploring for the general reader. In natural history and popular science, alone, for instance: Hal Whitehead and Luke Rendell’s amazing book The Cultural Lives of Whales and Dolphins or Brooke Borel’s history of the bedbug, Infested, or Caitlin O’Connell’s book on pachyderm behaviour, Elephant Don, or Christian Sardet’s gorgeous book Plankton? All are published by the University of Chicago.” (Sam Leith, literary editor of the “Spectator” Guardian)“Considers wider implications, including contributions to the field of gene-culture coevolution, applications to conservation, and how humans perceive and treat whales and dolphins. To attempt any of these aims would make a book noteworthy in the field; to do all of them makes it a must read. . . . Was I convinced by the evidence? In a way, that question misses the point of this book. Certainly, I became engaged in the ongoing discussion, so much so that I found it hard to write this review (and you would be correct in thinking that this sounds like an excuse for missed deadlines, but it also happens to be true). . . . Whales and dolphins could not wish for better advocates than the authors—this book will make readers think, and that might just be enough to move human culture from treating our oceans and their inhabitants slightly less badly to actively treating them better.” (Peter McGregor, Cornwall College, UK BioScience)“Revolutionary.” (Jessica Vyvyan-Robinson Scuba Diver Life)“Over the past few years, the most controversial question in animal cognition has not been whether animals have thoughts and feeling as individuals but whether a few species collectively create something that could reasonably be called a culture. . . . For a long-lived, social species, having a culture is an environmental advantage, since a collective knowledge means individuals can do things they would never be able to learn in their own lifetimes. Whitehead and Rendell are distinguished marine scientists. They provide [an] even balance between science and storytelling. . . . Their book is a profound exploration of animal cognition’s cutting edge.” (Economist)“The idea that our oceans teem with cultural animals—and have for millions of years—is the central conclusion of a new book by two whale scientists. And it’s a convincing one. . . . Rendell and Whitehead stake out provocative positions—for example, that language isn’t necessary for culture to exist—that ensure cross-talk from anthropologists who insist that language and symbolic meaning-making sit at the core of culture.” (Barbara J. King NPR “Cosmos & Culture”)"This extremely well-written book is an exemplary attempt at peacemaking in the so-called culture wars. Whitehead and Rendell provide a clear historical perspective on the study of animal culture, up-to-date literature reviews on behavioral innovations and traditions in non-human animals, comprehensive classifications of social mechanisms (i.e., the building blocks of culture), and careful critical analyses of the similarities and differences between human and animal cultures. The title of the book does not give a full appreciation of the long-term and fascinating research by Whitehead and Rendell. The authors’ insight and open-mindedness allow them to successfully address key definitional issues (e.g., ethnic markers, social norms); discuss the strengths and weaknesses of several methodological approaches to studying culture (e.g., method of elimination, experimental designs); link brain size, cognition, communication, and sociability; and explain the (mal)adaptive consequences and evolutionary implications of cultural transmission (e.g., gene-culture coevolution). . . . Spiced up with excellent quotations, this book will resonate well with a broad readership, from cetacean lovers to students of animal behavior to the general public. . . . Essential. All readers." (J-B. Leca, University of Lethbridge Choice)“For those captivated by whales and dolphins, whether in reality or by an idea, Whitehead and Rendell’s impressive book brings their world vividly to life, with a blend of anecdote, scientific research, and personal reflection. . . . The call to action is admirable. . . . Infectious.” (Resurgence & Ecologist)"A comprehensive academic work by researchers who have devoted their careers to studying sperm and killer whales. . . . The discovery of nonhuman societies composed of highly intelligent, social, empathetic individuals possessing sophisticated communication systems will force us to reformulate many questions. We have long asked whether we are alone in the universe. But clearly we are not alone on earth. The evolution of intelligence, of empathy and complex societies, is surely more likely than we have hitherto considered." (Tim Flannery New York Review of Books)“Five stars. . . . This exploration covers an astonishing body of knowledge and thought. . . . Well worth your probable multi-day read, this work could be the core of a course of study. What is immediately apparent is the sheer carefulness and completeness of the authors’ exposition.” (David Lloyd Sutton Manhattan Book Review)“[One of ‘The Best Books of 2015: Nature!’]. . . . The quietly revolutionary angle of this fantastic book is hinted right there in the title: culture—not the behavior but the culture of non-humans. The subject is huge and in very large part untenable, since whales and dolphins spend virtually all of their lives outside the range of human observation, let alone human measurement. But the attempts this book makes are very, very much worth making.” (Steve Donoghue Open Letters Monthly)“At the least, the reader has an up-to-date, authoritative account of advances in studying the behavior of a fascinating mammalian order. Readers with enquiring minds may question earlier underestimations of these creatures that seem so alien to us terrestrial bipeds. Even if only half of what the authors report turns out to be supported by accumulating evidence, then we must acknowledge that culture comes in diverse forms, just like other natural processes, such as digestion, locomotion, or cognition. Moreover, these findings also have a real-world relevance, because these magnificent creatures must be preserved, not just for their biodiversity but also for their cultural diversity. What a shame it would be if we exterminated them before we fathomed their secrets.” (William C. McGrew, University of Cambridge Current Anthropology)

The visibly rapid evolution of whale cultures By Brian Griffith Whitehead and Rendell rove the planet, often in their sailboat, scoping out whale songs, family relations, parenting, feeding strategies, migrations, and changes in learned behavior. Their stories come from whale observers everywhere, and some of them are seriously amazing. The view gets very large, as the authors keep comparing intelligent behavior between species, and they trace the whole evolution of whales. It becomes clear that they are describing a moving target, as the whales have undergone major expansions of brain size, and their cultures are changing before our eyes. The songs of humpback whales suddenly shift in style across whole ocean basins. The whales grow adept at stealing the catch from longline fishing boats. Whales released from captivity teach their wild friends the tricks they learned from humans. Much of the book gets technical, with discussions on the fine points of distinguishing inherited from learned behavior, or the genetic analysis of whale communities. But overall the observations are fascinating, and the driving curiosity is inspiring.

By Fret Freak Hal Whitehead is the go to guy for anyone wanting to know the latest on Whale research. This is not written as a scientific paper but it is a serious book. The discussions in this book on whale culture (and by inference the intelligence of these sentient beings) are cutting edge and really stunning!

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. On the concept of culture By Jeffrey Alan Sluka As an anthropologist, please allow me to provide a brief discussion of "culture" since that seems to be the major issue that those who do not like this book focus on. "Culture" is the core concept of anthropology - the science of humankind. It is, or can be, a complex concept or idea. However, there are some basic or concise definitions that are scientifically valid, agreed on by most anthropologists, and easily grasped - I refer to them as "thumbnail definitions" of culture.First, "culture" refers to all forms of behavior which are learned, shared, and transmitted (that is, taught from one generation to the next). As this book and other studies have now proven, some non-human animals do have "culture" in this sense. Much scientific evidence has emerged in the past two or three decades that supports this conclusion.Second, "culture" refers to "the customary way of life of a group or people." This is an anthropomorphic definition, and since animals are not "people" it is hard to apply this to non-human species. While non-human species have characteristic "ways of life," if these are biologically determined rather than "learned, shared and transmitted," they do not represent "culture." The question then, is how to tell for sure what forms of behaviour are purely genetically based, and what forms are based on experience or learning.Third, "culture" refers to a complex system of symbolic meanings. This is the most complex definition, and it is here that the scientific debate really focuses. It may be that some non-human animals have evolved or developed forms of learned, shared, and transmitted behavior which are based on trial and error (experience) and mimicy (colloquially referred to as "monkey see, monkey do") rather than on symbolic representation - that is, which do not appear to necessarily require conscious "understanding" (thinking in the human sense) or symbolic representation. No species except ours (homo sapiens sapiens) has been proven to have this sort of symbolic understanding-based "culture." This is not to say that none have this, only that it has not been scientifically proven yet. That is why there is so much interest in language - or the possibility of language or language-like communication - among non-human animals and especially the "great apes" (chimpanzees, orangutans and gorillas who are closest to us genetically and in evolutionary terms) and cetaceans (whales and dolphins) because they have very large brains include well-developed neocortex's where language is centered in the human brain. No really conclusive proof has yet been found that any species besides our own has "language" based communication. Finally, this is also why there is much interest in things like do some non-human animals mourn their dead - because that too may imply or represent evidence of symbolic thinking, for example because that would require an "understanding" of the concepts of "life" and "death," and might also suggest a conceptual understanding of "time."
