4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Good for all ages. By Hard2Please The history of Geronimo's life is told in a straight forward manner. Not a lot of detail; just enough to keep the story moving briskly. Not a lot of blood either. The main point of the narrative seems to be that Geronimo was not the savage of the legend. He was a man who only wanted to live the way his tribe had always lived on the land they had always lived on. He continued to do that against impossible odds long after others had given up. It is evident that the original book had many illustrations. It's a shame these weren't included. Hard-back books of yesteryear often had lovely hand-drawn pictures. This book probably did. Alas, we'll never know.

He is a great story teller and always holds my interest to the end. I have read quite a bit about the Indian culture of the West including Geronimo, and considering the age level this story is geared for, I find it very compelling, informative and interesting. Well worth the read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Unexpected By Blue Interesting. Not entirely what I expected. More about Geronimo the bandit, albeit stated as a recognised way of life for his tribe of Apache, than about Geronimo the guerrilla freedom fighter. Some interesting insights into attitudes of the time especially when compared with similar attitudes expressed in the Buffalo Bill autobiography.

Your hero was a Capt. in the South and a girl friend a spy in the North. Good decent read with none of the gore, blood or sex. Just a very good read. I recommend this book to anyone who has a interest in the Civil War. Oh yes, this author is one that I read time to time and never have been disappointed in any of his books. Not the very best but worth the four (4) stars I've given it.

Having been born in New York and raised in New Jersey, I don't often get to hear the viewpoint of a soldier in Lee's army. It was a deep, sentimental historical romance. It's well-written and gripping.

By Grant18 A play where the rich New England mill owner tries to prevent his son from going off to war (WWI) but fails with the result that the son returns with a severe case of "shell-shock" (now called PTSD). At the same time, the mill workers are on strike in their attempt to form a union. The mill owner's brother is a renowned research psychiatrist who has discovered that the wounded officer has become obsessed with the concept of industrial democracy & the only way he can recover is to see his father recognize the union. There's also a minor love story & an attempted murder but they're secondary to the main plot. This Winston Churchill (the American novelist, not the British aristocratic politician) had written many trenchant social commentaries that should be required reading for students studying the political philosophy of the late 19th century (Coniston, The Dwelling Pace of Light, et al.). Not his best work but certainly a stinging rebuke of unfettered capitalism with (unfortunately) an unlikely happy ending.

Emily Bronte’s time-tested story of love turned on itself and the violence and misery that result from thwarted passion

A novel of immense power, Wuthering Heights is filled with the raw beauty of the English moors and a deep compassion for the conflicting destinies of men and women. The novel begins with Lockwood, a tenant who takes up residence close to Wuthering Heights. His landlord, Mr. Heathcliff, proves to be surly, unfriendly, and rude. When Lockwood discovers a mildewed book with the names Catherine Earnshaw, Catherine Heathcliff, and Catherine Linton scratched on its cover, he begins to read, sojourning on a strange tale that proves irresistible. The heart-wrenching story he discovers about stubborn Cathy and wild-as-the-wind Heathcliff has been a favorite since its original publication in 1848.

This novel is part of Brilliance Audio's extensive Classic Collection, bringing you timeless masterpieces that you and your family are sure to love.

Wuthering Heights (The Classic Collection), by Emily Bronte

From Publishers Weekly The main drama in Bronte's novel happens in a long narrative told by an elderly housekeeper to a convalescing new tenant. This story-within-a-story setup makes it well suited for audio adaptation, as Scales takes the housekeeper's part and relates the past, while West performs as the tenant and describes the present. Scales primarily uses a folksy lower-class accent, but she also makes her voice harsh and threatening when speaking as Heathcliff, the surly man at the novel's heart. West, as the bewildered tenant, manages to sound both nervous and pretentious, but his part is fairly small, especially with this abridgment, so he mostly serves to provide transitions for the housekeeper's story. The extensive abridgment generally deletes sentences and phrases rather than entire paragraphs or sections. One drawback for the audio format is the difficulty of clarifying the novel's convoluted plot and family tree, since it's harder to search back through long CD tracks than through earlier chapters of the paperback. While a little of the depth of Bronte's writing is lost in abridgment, the novel's emotional core remains intact and wrenching, and the actors' heartfelt interpretations make it easy to imagine being curled up by a warm fire listening to an absorbing tale. In June, Penguin Audio remastered and released on CD for the first time nine other Penguin Classics: Crime and Punishment, Dracula, Frankenstein, Great Expectations, Jane Eyre, Moby Dick, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and Tale of Two Cities. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From School Library Journal Grade 7 Up—This audio version of Emily Bronte's classic is narrated by Ann Flosnik. Initially, her narration makes it difficult to distinguish between characters, but as the tale progresses, her vocal characterizations become more dramatic and unique for each character, drawing listeners deeper and deeper into this dark and brooding love story. The first disk of the set also contains a PDF ebook of the full text of the novel which can be downloaded. Some students will want to read along with the narrated version, while others can use the ebook as a reference tool for class assignments. A nice addition to classic literature collections and a good way to enhance the English curriculum.—Anita Lawson, Otsego High School, Otsego, MI Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Review "It is as if Emily Brontë could tear up all that we know human beings by, and fill these unrecognizable transparencies with such a gust of life that theytranscend reality."--Virginia Woolf

228 of 251 people found the following review helpful. The only edition to buy By Joseph Guyer This review is aimed more toward the Norton edition than to JANE EYRE. We all know this is a classic. Bronte was simply a genius and a harbinger of romantic, dramatic, gothic, and horror writing. (However, it still irks me that she couldn't end a simple sentence with a period. Every declarative statement, it seems, must be qualified with a colon or semi-colon. Oh well. Sign of the times.)As for the Norton edition, it's the only one to buy. Bronte makes the assumption that you have read the Bible cover-to-cover a zillion times, and for those of us who have not read it through once, Norton's annotations are more than helpful---they're essential to understanding the novel's Christian allusions. This edition also provides the reader with critical essays, contexts of Bronte's life, Bronte's reactions to critics of her day, etc.Bottom line: you can get the Dover Thrift edition for a couple bucks, but, if you are interested in giving this classic more than a cursory read, this edition is worth the extra money.

206 of 231 people found the following review helpful. wuthering heights editions By Jordi Vilalta Lopez Rather than delve on the contents of this strangest and strongest of English novels, so intensely poetic in its haunting darkness and otherness, I'll comment briefly on the best editions available for a good first contact:A) Text oriented editions (that is, editions with few materials added: normally an Introduction, annotation, and perhaps Charlotte's Peface and Biographical Notice and some bibliographical indications).1. Oxford World's Classics: authoritative text, good annotation, excellent introduction.2. Penguin's Classics: same as above, everything looks a little shorter but is excellent nonetheless.3. Wordsworth Classics edition. This would be a rather fine edition as befitting this collection, if it had a good 1847 text and not the heavily tampered-with Charlotte's 1850 edition. The text itself reflects accurately that of the 1900 Haworth Edition -a careful one-. The wording changes aren't perhaps so worrying nor is the toning-down of the dialectal tirades -although funny and useless-. What is worrying is the disappearance of more than six hundred paragrapph entries (I mean just the paragraphing, not the contents itself!), that makes for a different -and worse- reading experience. Very good and full -if brief- annotation. Mass-market, glued paperback.4. Heather Glen's for Routledge. One of the finest text-oriented editions, especially for the excellent Introduction and Epilogue together with its good annotation, out-of-print for rather obscure reasons. If you find still a very good to fine copy at amazon Canadian branch (or at abebooks.com, it would be a good buy.5. Orchises two-volume facsimile reprint of the 1847 edition. No notes nor any additional material. the books are well produced if a little expensive. Very interesting item, but only suitable for textual scholars or would-be scholars, or otherwise for fetish-oriented WH-maniacs.B) Study-oriented editions (i.e. editions that contain additional contextual information: early reviews, selection of Emily's poems, critical essays, chronologies of the novel or of the Bronte family...).6. Norton's Fourth Edition (current item): OK, the text is still a little idiosyncratic, but the notes are much improved, and so is everything else (with the anthology of poems, and the critical essays). A very fine study edition but also suitable for a first contact, although annotation is still on the scarce side. Good paperback production without flaps but signature-sewn (or so it seems) and good paper and printing quality (albeit with a rather small type).7. Broadview edition by Beth Newman: it's one of the best study editions overall. There are some minor textual foibles and the annotation is decidedly scanty (to make amends for Heywood excesses) but good and accurate, and both Prof. Newman ecellent Introduction and the selection of the additional contextual material is, arguably, the finest ever (including the very interesting document on "Brain fever"). Materially speaking, it is a good paperback without flaps with good paper and printing quality (like Norton Critical, although I can't ascertain without tearing apart my copy of Beth Newman's that it be signature-sewn instead of glue-only "perfect binding). In any case a very good buy.7. Alison Booth's for Longman Cultural. Other of the very best study editions available. The text is deadly acuurate -except for some 1850 unobtrusive detail- on theClarendon 1976 reference critical edition, although the punctuation -like Norton Critical, Broadview's Newman and Oneworld's one- has been silently lightened and modernized throughout. It looks like glue-only "perfect binding" paperback, but perhaps it is signature-sewn. Paper and printing quality are good enough. The only misgiving I have is the overdone fragmentation of contextual material (good and relevant material though it is): there are 40+ items, many of them very short or they wouldn't fit into 430 pages. One of the best possible buys.8. Onewold's Classics edition. A fine paperback edition with flaps, very good paper and printing quality and (I rather surmise than know for sure) signature-sewn. The text looks like 1847 in paragraphing but it takes in toomany of 1850 "improvements" and is wrong at some places: it's short of a disaster, but rather non-reliable (in spite of the well-meant efforts by the almost anonymous editing panel who perpetrated it). Annotation is good and comprehensive enough, but the contextual material is rather scanty and run-of-the-mill non-commital.9. Barnes&Noble's Tatiana Holway edition (hardcover). To say it promptly the only fault with this lovely edition (but, as stated above in wordsworth Classics edition, a really big fault) is its accurate and reliable 1850 Haworth Edition text. Other than this, it looks as a popularly oriented edition, but with quality marks. The Introduction by Daphne Merkin is good enough, the annotation by Holway is really excellent. Supplementary material is very scanty: the "Charlotte's prefatory materials" of 1850 (prefixed to the text, which is a pity), and some comments about film and TV adaptations as well as some chosen excerpts of reviews. Material production is outstanding: nice hardcover with dust jacket, good paper and printing quality, the only good available edition in a becoming format (Clarendon Edition is very hard to come by nowadays: say one to three years to pin it down). Don't forget the Franklin Mint editions of the sixties and seventies if you are interested in a very beautiful book with a reliable 1847 text and illustrations by Alan Reingold (and nothing else).

Well, if Jane Eyre was one of those long-forgotten books, pick up a copy. To read it as an adult is a joy: it's a sweeping, disturbing, intense, thrilling, very romantic gothic love story, written in the voice of a very intense, almost claustrophobically self-aware young heroine. Jane is no Ophelia - she's a complicated, remarkable character, and a very strong female character in a genre that usually draws women as beautiful victims at best. There's something for everyone in this book: Windswept castles, difficult and neurotic family members, dark secrets about tragic former lovers, good triumphing over evil, all that good juicy stuff that makes a great romantic story. What elevates Jane Eyre is Bronte's remarkable style & skill and her sharp and complex characterizations.Trust me on this: If you don't remember it from your teens, you should give it a try now. Here is one novel that more than lives up to it's 'classic' status.

By Skeggs50 Between working a full-time job and running a side business, time is a precious commodity and preparing meals can definitely consume its fair share. I like to prepare meals ahead of time and have them on hand when I’m super busy. I save time in the long run and don’t have to dine out either which also saves me money and allows for healthier choices. This books provides easy to follow recipes and uses ingredients already in my pantry or on my shopping list thereby keeping things simple. I like that the author included notes on best freezing practices – some things just aren’t common sense so this was a great addition for me. So far I have made several of the dishes, including the beef stew, Pork chops, and burritos so I can’t wait to pull these out of the freezer soon and give them a try.

It's a lifestyle guide actually By epux I used to rant so much about all this wasted time spent in the kitchen when I could be doing things much more productive! But the alternative is to go out or call a pizza. Which turns out really expensive and isn't so healthy on the long-term.Also, I often get distracted while cooking. The phone rings, or I start reading a thread on Facebook, or I get caught by TV and dinner gets burned ....The whole idea here is to dedicate time (and 100% focus) to cook for a couple of hours. It's so much worth it because you can easily prepare 10-20 dinners when cooking large quantities. It brings such a great satisfaction feeling to freeze all these portions and have them ready for the rest of the month.I love coming back home and my biggest worry is to decide if I want to warm up a delicious pasta dish or burritos (my 2 favorite recipes from the cookbook)Freezer cooking is really a way of thinking and the author makes it so easy with simple recipes and with quantities thought on purpose for a cooking session.

The relationship between Galileo Galilei and Isaac Newton is like that of two complementary stages of a rocket. Galileo, the argumentative "wrangler" who demanded that the universe be examined through a telescope rather than by means of a philosophy book, provided the first liftoff, and Newton, the secretive mathematician who searched among his notes to find a mislaid proof for universal gravitation, put the world into orbit. Here, from award-winning journalist William Bixby, are their stories.

35 of 38 people found the following review helpful. charming and informative book on two great scientists By Mageditor I was delighted to discover this book, which cleverly combines biographies of these two great men. Galileo’s many discoveries laid the groundwork for modern science. Attacked by the Catholic Church as a heretic, he died in disgrace, but “his work and that of his successors perpetuated his memory,” observes the author. “One of these, the Englishman Isaac Newton, later advanced a theory to define the structure of the universe.” Curiously, Newton was born in 1642, the year Galileo died. The author gives a good description of the darkness of knowledge in the 1500s, “a world lit only by fire” as historian William Manchester memorably called it. In Galileo’s day, people still believed that Earth was the center of the universe and that the sun, stars, and planets moved in a circular course around it. They could see that the sun rose in the morning and set at nightfall, so it must be moving around the Earth. In the 1500s, educated people still believed in mistaken Aristotelian theories such as the idea that the heavens revolved around the Earth. And that a 40-pound rock would fall twice as fast as a 20-pound one. But to challenge such Aristotelian ideas was to question the Catholic Church, which had accepted many Classical ideas as if they were gospel. To test them with experimentation was heresy.Galileo would lay the groundwork for the entire modern world of scientific thought by challenging such accepted myths through observation of actual phenomena, and because of it he lived under the threat of persecution by the Inquisition for most of his life. The author chronicles Galileo's many amazing discoveries, starting (at age 17) with the law of the simple pendulum -- that the swing of a pendulum may be long or short, but as long as it swings, it invariably measures the same amount of time. Galileo figured out the principles of inertia and uniformly accelerated motion, and made many important discoveries with his telescope (much improved from Kepler's crude instrument). He determined that Venus and the other planets were lit by sunlight, that the Milky Way was actually numberless stars rather than mist, that the dark part of the moon was actually lit by lit light from the Earth. He wad even able to estimate the height of mountains on the moon by measuring the shadows they cast.Bixby also talks about Galileo's struggles. In 1592, he was so poor when he was offered a teaching position in Padua, he had to walk there from Florence, a distance of more than 100 miles, carrying his belongings on his back. And, of course, there is an entire chapter on his persecution by the Catholic Church. The author emphasizes the continuity between Galileo and Newton in how they approached the study of laws of science. Both insisted on observation and experimentation as the basis for inquiry. Each of these great men is made more memorable in this side-by-side examination. We would do well to remember how frustrated Galileo was not only by "the extraordinary stupidity of the multitude," but also the supposed experts of his day -- the "the lazy obstinacy... of leading philosophers... who close their eyes to the light of truth.”There was no mention of who the author William Bixby is in the Amazon description, so I looked him up. He has written at least ten books including Robert Scott, Antarctic pioneer, Impossible Journey of Sir Ernest Shakleton, and The race to the South Pole. This was a charming and informative book. I recommend it to anyone.

Clear summary of physics history By WEck This book fills the need for a precise summary of the history of the discovery of some of the most basic scientific ideas that are used every day.It treats some complicated topics with the clarity they deserve. It's a great read for a young aspiring scientist or an older person who wishes to simplify his understanding of the universe.

By Amazon Customer A short and well written dual biography of Galileo and Newton. Highlights their scientific contributions, methods and conclusions, with minimal detail. Brief biography, including a short history of Galileo's conflict with the Catholic Church. An excellent introduction to two of the founders of the scientific revolution. The last chapter is a bit of a distraction, with hints of spiritualism and religion. BIxby is otherwise a lucid author on the science. Recommend it highly for young readers, except for the last chapter.

In The Unwritten War, Daniel Aaron examines the literary output of American writers—major and minor—who treated the Civil War in their works. He seeks to understand why this devastating and defining military conflict has failed to produce more literature of a notably high and lasting order, why there is still no "masterpiece" of Civil War fiction.

In his portraits and analyses of 19th- and some 20th-century writers, Aaron distinguishes between those who dealt with the war only marginally—Henry Adams, Henry James, William Dean Howells, Mark Twain-and those few who sounded the war's tragic import—Herman Melville, Walt Whitman, and William Faulkner. He explores the extent to which the war changed the direction of American literature and how deeply it entered the consciousness of American writers. Aaron also considers how writers, especially those from the South, discerned the war's moral and historical implications.

The Unwritten War was originally published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1973. The New Republic declared, [This book's] major contribution will no doubt be to American literary history. In this respect it resembles Edmund Wilson's Patriotic Gore and is certain to become an indispensable guide for anyone who wants to explore the letters, diaries, journals, essays, novels, short stories, poems-but apparently no plays-which constitute Civil War literature. The mass of material is presented in a systematic, luminous, and useful way.

A Literary Who's Who Of Civil War Writers-Wow By Alfred Johnson As we approach the 150th Anniversary of the beginning of the American Civil War one would be hard pressed to find a subject related remotely to the war and its outcome that has not been covered by one or another Civil War buff. Needless to say the various major military and civilian figures have been covered ad nauseaum. Ditto for the main military strategies and their outcomes. Hardly a skirmish in some god forsaken hollow has been left untouched. And it goes on from there. The songs of both sides, the fashions of the day, the religions of the hour, the sacrifices on the home fronts and the financial credit ratings of both sides, just to pick some random examples, have all in their turn had their day in court. Lately, as the search for new material has gotten more doggedly elusive in the face of such scarcity factors such as the army morale, soldiers' morality and the meaning of life (or the afterlife) for both sides have come in for inspection. In short, there is no lack of information about almost any facet of the struggle. Yet, this book under review, published originally some twenty years ago, concerning the way the American literary set at the time or since then have, or have not, written the definitive sage of the conflict is well worth the read, and as a very good source for further exploration on the subject as well.Professor Aaron has taken as his thesis the notion that although the American Civil War would seem to have been a natural subject for some literary figure to attain immortality by writing the its definitive saga. He argues, for several reasons, that this did not occur, or if did it was by someone like William Faulkner who was substantially removed from any serious direct link to the struggle. Fair enough, More than one author, and here I am thinking of Norman Mailer, has broken his literary teeth trying, unsuccessfully, to write the great American novel, Thus that the same frustration may have occurred over a titanic human struggle by those who fought in or had the conflict touch their lives even indirectly does not come as a surprise. What is interesting here is the professor's extensive overview of his subject and of the structure of his argument. The professor has divided his book in several sections that reflect various applications of his overall theme. I will not go into detail here on each section but just say that a litany of the names that he evokes form a veritable who's who of the American literary scene, some very familiar (Faulkner, James, Twain) others lost in the mist of time (DeForest, Tourgee, Cable), over the 100 years after the war (he basically ends his work after looking at Faulkner's influence). I will, taking my hints from this book, spend more time in this space later going into more depth on many of these authors. For now though it is enough to summarize the sections.Professor Aaron starts out by looking at the literary divide first- for or against one side or the other (or an off-hand indifference, as in the case of Melville). This tends toward a not unexpected divide between hot Northern "abolitionists" and Southern "fire-eaters". He goes on to look at Hawthorne, Whitman, and the above-mentioned Melville. He thereafter gives space, but literary short shrift to the "malingerers" those who sat out the war, one way or another. Here Henry James, Mark Twain and Henry Adams get their just dessert. No one expects a literary figure to be a fighter or brave, but it helps when the subject is war, especially a war that will define a new age (successfully or not).Actual combatant writers come under fire as well. Most of these writers are not memorable and Ambrose Bierce is the only one I have even seen anthologized. The second hand warriors are best represented by Stephen Crane His "Red Badge Of Courage", required reading in high school certainly had the grit of the battlefield down but I agree with the professor that such a narrow scope is hardly the stuff of the "great" Civil War novel. Southern writers come in for some attention, especially the now well-known name of Sidney Lanier. Part of Professor Aaron argument is an assumption that while the South lost the war it "won" the literary battle. Certainly that was true until recently on the history front on the subjects of the fate of the slave under slavery and Radical Reconstruction. I am not as sure that this premise applies on this question. Finally, the professor ends with a look at the Agrarians, a revisionist political/literary trend that took to defending the "old regime" in the South. The names Allen Tate, Robert Penn Warren (of "All The King's Men" fame) and John Crow Ransome are associated most closely with this endeavor. And of course at the tag end of that movement, although a literary force in his own right, William Faulkner who put the South, at least in fiction, back on the map. We have nothing common, as far as I can tell, politically or socially but, damn, he could write. As one can see a mere summary leads to many tempting ideas and precludes anything other than a summary to be followed up. In the meantime read this book. It is worth the time.

Armistead This book is only incidentally about the Civil War per se and does not really contribute to knowledge about the war. The author reviews major writers from before the war until the 1920's and how they were influenced by the war and wrote about it. Their "philosophies" about the war are covered in fair detail and extensive quotations are made from the authors reviewed. The subject is very well researched by the author. Coverage of the various authors is, however, somewhat uneven. The reader cannot help but think that surely somebody could have written this study in a manner much less tedious to read.

So what do you eat, then? It seems anyone who's ever had to explain their decision to go plant-based has heard this question a couple hundred times or so. But eating this way is neither difficult nor boring and you get to play around a lot, exploring new dishes and re-inventing old ones. No, you're not stuck with salads for the rest of your life. Although those can be an awesome standalone meal, too... but more on that later. Maya and Jerry spent the first year of their plant-based journey chronicling the recipes they were preparing and the fun they had in their kitchen. This book was written to share both with you.

I started my plant-based journey some time before 88 Kitchen Tales was published so by that time I was familiar with vast range of recipes, although mostly coming from my head. Purchasing this lovely, picturesque book with simply delivered and I believe easily understandable recipes even for the beginners opened my perspective to a much higher extent at that time. It helped me realized that there are some other ways how to "spice" your dish and most of all that there are some products that actually exist. And if you can not find them in your favourite store, you can make them by yourself. If you do not know something exists you will not be searching for it so the book really broadens your mind in the field of variety of possibilities of what can be done behind your kitchen counter. It pushes you into the awareness of what you had been missing by eating "conventional" food and that by going plant-based you will sooner or later realize what genuine taste of fruit, vegetable, nuts, cereals etc. actually means. And even more ... it boosts your creativity to heaven.I could say getting this book for yourself or wrap it as a gift for your beloved will be a move that will put a smile not only to your face, but also to your stomach, body and soul.Well done, Maya and Jerry!

Now I need to say right up front that I am NOT a cook. I’m actually kind of cooking challenged. But these simple, step-by-step instructions (and great sense of humor) are clear enough that even I can create these delicious and colorful dishes. I am particularly loving the many different “spreads” the authors walk you through. Simple, and delicious! There’s also a variety of dishes here, from the “light” meals to the deserts, to the filling ones, I feel like — much to my amazement — there’s a vegan alternative for anything I’d want to eat. (the Avocado Basil Pesto Sauce is a “must eat” for me). AND I get to feel SO much more virtuous eating it because it’s not only so much better for ME than conventional ways of cooking I was raised with, but it’s also great for the environment, and for the four-legged and winged-ones we share this planet with. This cook book is a “win” all around. Now if only someone could make housework this appealing…

Dodo Collections brings you another classic from Arthur Quiller-Couch ‘On The Art of Reading.’On the Art of Reading: Lectures Delivered in the University of Cambridge, 1916-1917.Sir Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch was a Cornish writer, who published under the pen name of Q. He published his Dead Man’s Rock (a romance in the vein of Stevenson’s Treasure Island) in 1887, and he followed this up with Troy Town (1888) and The Splendid Spur (1889). After some journalistic experience in London, mainly as a contributor to the Speaker, in 1891 he settled at Fowey in Cornwall. He published in 1896 a series of critical articles, Adventures in Criticism, and in 1898 he completed Robert Louis Stevenson’s unfinished novel, St Ives. With the exception of the parodies entitled Green Bays: Verses and Parodies (1893), his poetical work is contained in Poems and Ballads (1896). In 1895 he published an anthology from the sixteenth and seventeenth-century English lyrists, The Golden Pomp, followed in 1900 by an equally successful Oxford Book of English Verse, 1250-1900 (1900). He was made a Bard of Gorseth Kernow in 1928, taking the Bardic name Marghak Cough (’Red Knight’).Quiller-Couch was a noted literary critic, publishing editions of some of Shakespeare’s plays (in the New Shakespeare, published by Cambridge University Press, with Dover Wilson) and several critical works, including Studies in Literature (1918) and On the Art of Reading (1920). He edited a successor to his verse anthology: Oxford Book of English Prose, which was published in 1923. He left his autobiography, Memories and Opinions, unfinished; it was nevertheless published in 1945.

Essential reading for The Information Age By Martin Ternouth It may seem strange to recommend as essential modern reading a book that consists of a series of lectures on English Literature delivered in 1916. Arthur Qullier-Couch, or "Q" as he became known as an author of short stories, had recently been appointed Professor of English Literature at Cambridge University, England: and these lectures are a statement of his beliefs about knowledge. Knowledge, as distinct from information.I suspect that the recent discoveries about how the brain develops (Matt Ridley's Nature via Nurture is a good text) will lead to an increasing emphasis in the next fifty years upon knowledge rather than information. At the beginning of the 21st Century our focus is exclusively upon information and communication. Our education system is geared not to gives us facts, but to teach us how to discover facts when we need them. Many social consequences parallel this: not least the rise of feminism, it being very probably true that women are better at communication than men.Quiller-Couch's thesis is the reverse of our universal present-day mindset. He argues (and I paraphrase grossly) that information is not only irrelevant, but that too much information can be at best distracting, and at worst, dangerous. The esssential features of human character - the battle between good and evil, of self and others - has remained unchanged throughout recorded history. Each person since the human race began has to resolve, or fail to resolve, this battle for themselves. The most gifted have been able to write about it, or compose music, or paint pictures of it. The very greatest of these works of art have a universal application: that is, the human context applies to anyone living in any age - Hamlet is not just about a medieval Dane. What differs from age to age is the language in which the context is expressed.Until fairly recently a girl's school in the east of England had the school motto "Video, Audio, Disco". No prizes for guessing why it was changed. But in Latin it is a reasonable aspiration for a school: I see, I hear, I learn. So language changes and has different resonances at different times. To understand Shakespeare or Milton we have to study what the words meant at the time they were written. This means understanding the human dilemmas and issues that the dramatist/poet/author was trying to address. Our way into these works of literature is therefore through understanding the universal problems of human morality. QuillerCouch suggests the remarkable claim that anyone who has read and really understood Book 9 of Milton's Paradise Lost doesn't need to learn anything else, except what may be necessary to earn a living. And he goes further: having mastered Book 9 (or whatever) then, apart from the few other works of art of similar stature, any further and lesser knowledge is distracting. This idea seems preposterous to a generation brought up to believe in information and a Freedom of Information Act. But I suspect that the pendulum may start to swing back in the next twenty years, and if this review is still posted here in fifty years, Quiller-Couch's ideas - updated with examples of universal great art from 1916 to 2050, and from a wider set of cultures than The West - may be nearer to cutting edge than obsolesence.

Neuman This is one of two books by Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch used by Helene Hanff as the foundation of her education as a writer. Many people educate themselves who cannot afford education by reading all they can. My mother did not finish the eighth grade but knew more about American History and literature than most college kids today because she had a solid foundation of learning from an old fashioned teacher in a one room school house and a lifelong practice of reading. Many may find this book dated and no doubt boring if possessed by a mind incurious of the literature of their country's language. However, there is no substitute for the motivation provided by a master of the language.

I just received my copy and find the print so small and grey that I wish I had "looked inside" - as I now see it is possible to do before adding a book to my cart. It's almost illegible.Only the cover is attractive. I am very disappointed, but I see no publisher listed and wonder who in the world prints such an inaccessible book. Where does it come from?I'd like to return this for another edition and will call to find out if I can do that.

Like all of them (and the short stories) it is near impossible to put down, and leaves you awestruck at Holmes's genius. Doyle's writing style is extremely impressive as always, his characters seem so very real! This book is believable, a true masterpiece of mystery literature, and in the top tier of the long list of the great English detective stories. It just doesn't get any better than this. Even the long section without Holmes and Watson in it ("The Scowers") is enjoyable to read, and not boring (unlike the Mormon part in a Study In Scarlet). Highly reccommended.

By Mary Whipple The last of the four complete Sherlock Holmes novels written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Valley of Fear gives the reader two plots for the price of one. More accustomed to writing short stories than well-developed novels, Doyle creates two story lines, only loosely connecting them. He then throws Moriarty, the arch-villain, into the mix, though Moriarty was killed off in a previous novel. In the first plot, which directly involves Sherlock Holmes, a letter warns, in code, that something dreadful will happen at Birlstone, an ancient manor house surrounded by a forty-foot moat. Before Holmes can act, however, the owner, Jack Douglas, is found shot to death, his face destroyed in the blast from a sawed-off shotgun. Douglas was an American, and the nature of his death and the weapon "proves" to the local police that the killer was also an American. As Holmes investigates, with the help of Scotland Yard, the mystery deepens. Douglas always raised the drawbridge at night, the moat was too big to leap, and there were no strangers in the house. Gradually, Holmes uncovers Douglas's background in America. In the second plot, a group of coal miners belonging to a secret society welcome a new member, Jack McMurdo, someone accused of murder in Chicago who needed to escape someplace where no one knew him. His lodge has recommended that he go to the Vermissa plain, "the Valley of Fear," and see Boss McGinty, the Bodymaster of the lodge there. McGinty and his men belong to a group which wreaks havoc on the community when it believes injustices have occurred. Seemingly above the law, they have avoided being caught, though rumor has it that a Pinkerton man has been sent to unmask the members of the group. Holmes plays little or no part in this whole section. The two plots have seemingly little in common, except that the dead man from Part I is branded with the mark of the lodge of miners. The second part, about the lodge of miners, provides the motivation for the murder of Douglas in the first part. It is too bad that Doyle did not separate these two stories, since the story of the miners, though not involving Holmes, could have been developed as a powerful "one-off." It is a story filled with all the ingredients of great fiction--even including a love story--a dramatic and relevant mystery with connections to the social issues of the day. For anyone interested in watching a writer try to bridge the gap between short stories and novels, this "novel," though fun, shows the errors of using two plots with too little integration of ideas. n Mary WhippleA Study in ScarletThe Hound of the Baskervilles: 150th Anniversary Edition (Signet Classics)The Sign of Four (Penguin Classics)The Naval TreatySpeckled Band/Mystery of the Second Stain (Sherlock Holmes)

Valentino The Sherlock Holmes canon includes a total of 60 stories from the original author, AC Doyle. Of the 60, only four were full novels including this one. The rest are short stories published in five books, totaling 9 books. The first two stories penned by Doyle were the novels, Study in Scarlet (where Holmes and Watson first meet), and A Sign of the Four (which includes Watson meeting his wife). This is followed by short stories in book 3, the Adventures of SH. Ideally the stories are best read in order, but not critical. Unlike the rest of the canon, the two novels, Hound of the Baskervilles and Valley of Fear, can be read at any time - especially since they each defy the chronology. Hound was written about 8 years after the short story, The Final Solution, when Holmes died in a mortal struggle with the Napoleon of crime, Professor Moriarty, who was also killed. (But, Holmes doesn't die and is brought back, very cleverly and very credibly, 10 years later, in the story, The Empty House, written 2 years after Hound. Anyway, 10 years after all that Doyle wrote, The Valley of Fear - which is one of two stories that include Prof Moriarty - this is not a spoiler to the story and the Prof is only talked about in present tense. I guess my point is, this novel, and Hound of the Baskervilles can be read at any time whereas everything else is slightly better if read in order. Okay, enough of the background on the canon.Valley of Fear is simply a great read with wonderful twists at the end that the reader will not likely see coming. I would put Valley and Hound as the two best novels, with Hound perhaps slightly better, but better is all about taste and preference. Anyway, this novel is broken down into two main parts, Part 1 is the Murder mystery, who killed...? Part 2 is a backstory, about 20 years earlier and has nothing to do with Sherlock Holmes. The part 2 story provides the motivation for the murder mystery in part 1. This format is the same as found in the first two novels but the backstory here is probably the best of the three - Doyle now has almost 30 years of writing experience. There is a very short part 3, the Epilogue which brings us back to Baker Street for a final update. The Valley of Fear part 1 mystery the reader gets most of the clues the same time as Holmes does and is more or less free to try to figure things out himself but as I mentioned, there are twists and nothing in Valley of Fear is what it seems!!!! One noticeable difference for myself, who has now read 7 of the 9 books, and possibly fellow Sherlockians, is that the deep friendship between Holmes and Watson is just not there. The first page was almost disturbing in that regard. Watson is more of an object then a subject to Holmes, more like the modern adaptations. It's just something that jumped out at me since other than the Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Granada Television Series series, which is extremely faithful to the original stories, Holmes and Watson have a deep personal friendship and respect. Watson is a friend, gentlemen, medic, soldier, and chronicler - not the bumbling sidekick of the Basil Rathbone movies. Anyway, the story, both part 1 and 2, are excellent and much better than I expected. Highly recommended.
