It is shorter than the previous 2 books but this nicely bookends the whole Ravensblack storyline as it gives the reader the same punchy feeling as episode 1. Like the first book you will feel compelled to finish this in one sitting. There is certainly no let-up in the action as our heroes (and a slightly annoyed tree) battle the forces of evil while Crowley carries on being....well...Crowley. There are enough unanswered questions to leave you wanting more while not feeling cheated out of an ending to this particular episode.Twisted, macabre, and sprinkled with Crowley's unique lyrical use of the English language this is a fantastic climax to the story. I loved it.

The Guermantes Way, by Marcel Proust

Review Naxos AudioBooks continue with their latest instalment from Marcel Proust's inimitable saga, Remembrance of Things Past in the form of The Guermantes Way. This is the third book of seven and is usually split into two, but here we have the whole 23 hours read with inimitable poise by the great Neville Jason. In The Guermantes Way we explore Marcel's acquaintance with Parisian high society in the form of the Guermantes family, fabulously rich and with property all over the country. Their estates at the fictional Combray are also a link with Marcel's past as he recalls those wonderful days of his childhood at that lovely seaside town. We also encounter the predatory Baron de Charlus, who pursues Marcel with his homosexual tendencies. It goes without saying that Jason is supreme in this Proust unabridged translation and The Guermantes Way is certainly essential listening. One looks forward to further instalments in this series with Sodom and Gomorrah up next. --Gerald Fenech - Malta News Online

The third part of Proust's In Search of Lost Time By Jerry Clyde Phillips The third part of the novel follows the narrator into the aristocratic salons of turn-of-the-century Paris, and comments on such matters as the Dreyfus Affair, art and literature, and the disappointments which invaribly follow the achievement of goals sought after with unbridled desire. Whether The Guermantes Way is better or worse than the earlier parts of the novel (or those parts to follow) is not important as a recommendation or criticism; it makes up an integral part of the novel and cannot exist without the other parts.Proust is not easy reading and demands the undivided attention of the reader; as I am becoming aware, the effort put into reading the novel is eminently rewarding.

High Society By James Paris In the previous two volumes of IN SEARCH OF LOST TIME, we have seen the young Marcel fantasize about love (in the persons of Gilberte and Albertine) and high society (in the person of the Duchesse de Guermantes). The bulk of THE GUERMANTES WAY's 819 pages is concerned with two parties involving the glitterati of fin-de-siecle Paris. At the party of the literary Mme de Villeparisis, Marcel gains his first admittance to the world of the nobility and gets invited to an evening of his prized Dutchess, whom he had gazed on from afar when she attended church services in Combray, amid the tombs of her ancestors. Sometimes, however, when you get your heart's desire, there is that nagging question: "Is this all there is?"At one point in the latter party, Swann says to Marcel that "one can't have a thousand years of feudalism in one's blood with impunity." The novel ends with the Guermantes about to leave for yet a more empyrean social gathering, to which Marcel is not even sure he is invited. (As we see in the next volume, he is invited and does attend.) At the very end, the Duke puts off seeing a dying friend and begins carping about his wife's choice of shoes. We see the beginnings of Marcel's disenchantment with the social scene. Since this volume covers such a short span of time, we do not yet see the effect of his grandmother's death on the young narrator. We leave him, stunned and confused, at the threshhold of a personal triumph that has already lost much of its luster for him.As I re-read Proust's great series, I am struck by how much I missed the first time I read it years ago. Many reviewers are struck by the length of the scenes describing the parties, but now I find that there is so much going on, and so many undercurrents, that the interior action passes quickly. Most of the action takes place in Marcel's mind as he encounters these gods of society and their hangers-on as they duel for position in their circles."Thus I beheld the pair of them," muses Marcel, "divorced from that name Guermantes in which long ago I had imagined them leading an unimaginable life, now just like other men and other women...."

11 of 13 people found the following review helpful. In touch with the high spheres of society By C. Mejía The third volume of In search of Lost Time begins with the moving of Marcel's family to an apartment in a palace, next to the which Charlus lives. This is where Marcel begins to deal with the highest society: the Guermantes family, which seemed so distant to him in his child fantasies, becomes soon part of his life. He goes to parties and meetings, where he can see Mme Cambremer, duchess Orianne and her husband, Charlus, Odette, Swann, etc. The words of the narrator are as thorough as his sight, and he describes for pages and pages the dialogues and behaviours that take place during such encounters. In this volume is where we begin to find the diferent sexual tendencies that will be later explored. As Marcel keeps visiting Saint-Loup, Mr. Charlus develops an interest in Marcel, therefore he begins to play a series of odd games: Charlus will have outbursts of rage as Marcel's shallowness becomes clear to the count. The snobism and everchanging criteria, through the which political circles consider someone as part of the group of desireable relations, are shown through the detailed depiction of the Dreyfuss affair. The fears of society are suddenly embodied in the character of this german diplomatic, who apparently is spying on the french government. But, even worse, he is a jew. The colliding opinions about this affair divide society. In the midst of this social confusion, Marcel is but a quiet witness, whose interventions seem to stop in invitations and references to other great names of society. One of his favorite activities during this parties is to find and reconstruct the family ties between the different participants. An interesting relationship develops between Marcel and Orianne and her husband, while Charlus finds this to be of bad taste. Marcel will know through these people the details surrounding Saint-Loup's romance with an "indecent" dancer. He knew something from the days he spent visiting his friends while he was in service.By the end of this volume we get to see Swann's decadence in the high circles, while his wife, Odette, seems to gain more terrain everyday. Swann tries to mantain his contact with the Guermantes, but they are less interested in him as time goes by... and not even his revelation of being in the route of death, due to an ailment, captures their interest. Even more, they don't believe him.Proust keeps working in describing the defyning coordenates of this world of looks and absurd, hollow judgements. The life of the court parties is ruled by worldly signs, theatrical effects and empty forms. Although the character's fantasies surrounding the name of the Guermantes crumbles after he meets them and find them to be... just humans (and not the corporeal reality behind the images he used to see with endearment in Combray); although this fact, he is more and more fascinated by their importance between the other aristocrats. His desire is renewed by the inclusion of a third party that desires to establish contact, or to hold good relations with the Guermantes. It is the game of snobism, in which fear seems to be the main tool.

Wild Strawberries: A Virago Modern Classic (Virago Modern Classics), by Angela Thirkell

Review Appealing.―Glasgow Sunday HeraldCharming, very funny indeed. Angela Thirkell is perhaps the most Pym-like of any twentieth-century author, after Pym herself.

About the Author Angela Thirkell (1890-1961) wrote many works of fiction and non-fiction, including twenty-nine 'Barsetshire' novels, which won her great popularity and acclaim. The first of these, High Rising, was published in 1933. Her relatives included Edward Burne-Jones, Rudyard Kipling and Stanley Baldwin, and her godfather was JM Barrie. She was twice married and had four children.

By rainpebble Wild Strawberries by Angela Thirkell; 4 1/2 starsAngela Thirkell really knew how to write comedic stories that left the reader wanting more. Wild Strawberries is the second in her Barsetshire series & is as delightful as High Rising, the first.Evidently one of Angela Thirkell's trademarks was to throw a lot of the characters at you and hope that you get them all sorted out quickly. I have no problem with that. I find it to be rather entertaining. I find all of her characters to be quite well defined & thus no confusion. This novel is about the Leslie family, well-to-do with a lot of family members, friends & acquaintances. The mother cheerfully and lovingly rearranges any and all plans for those around her, however small, until they become an ineffective mess. Fortunately the servants and the family know to just "carry on" while letting her have her say & thinking she is having her way. She's a lovable character even though one of the most vague characters I have come across. She and her husband had three sons and a daughter. Their oldest son was killed in the war so they are raising his teenage son. Their second son John, is a remarkably kind and intelligent man in his mid-30's, whose wife died after just one year of marriage. Their youngest son David, is a flirt and a man-about-town, with dozens of ideas for a brilliant career, none of which seem to ever work out for him.Their daughter Agnes, is married with three small children, appears a bit simple minded & yet manages to be fairly observant and able to rise to the occasion and save the day.The catalyst for change is when Agnes' niece by marriage Mary Preston, comes to stay for the summer. She falls in love with David, the flirtatious son, but also strikes a sympathetic chord in the heart of John who happens to be in the right time and place to provide a shoulder to lean on when she is going through a little crisis. Most of the characters have their own story going on as the narrative drives forward to the climax, the 17th birthday party of the Leslie's grandson.I found myself laughing out loud while reading. This book is very cleverly written and there were times when I just had to pause in delighted surprise at some funny and unexpected moment. I also love how Thirkell gives her readers different shadings of some of the characters. Mrs. Leslie could have been nothing but a caricature what with all of her ridiculous plans and interference. But the author occasionally dwells on the way that she thinks about her son who was killed in the war. Things like that make it difficult to find Thirkell's characters just one dimensional. The reader ends up seeing different sides of them.I quite enjoyed this read as I have enjoyed every Thirkell I have attempted.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. I enjoyed the book By Shelly Magee Very light hearted, comical book in the English way. I enjoyed the book; it is nostalgic and sweet in a way that only books written in the 1930' can be.

0 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Boring, occasionally offensive By Katherine A McGuire Tedious stereotypical characters, predictable plot, bigotry dressed up as social commentary, jarring racism. This book was never great literature to begin with and has not stood the test of time well. Others have written in this genre and time period better.

The author starts by an overview of the paleo diet and the you get lots of recipes. The recipes include meat, vegetables, salads and desserts. I can't wait to start my BBQ and try the grilled lamb kebabs with mint, the turkey tenderloin with olive tapenade, grilled Cajun zucchinis, the cherry tomato salad in grilled avocado cups and the grille grapefruit with agave. They look so delicious. The recipes are well presented and the instructions are clear and concise making it easy to prepare each dish. Overall, well worth adding to your cookbook collection for anyone following a paleo diet.

Great recipes for Paleo diets By LyndaG BBQ season is just around the corner, and I’m delighted to find these delicious paleo grilling recipes such as cilantro-lime turkey burgers and tandoori grilled chicken. I’m always looking for recipes for grilled vegetables, and never though of grilling cabbage. I’ll be trying this, because cabbage is so healthy, but it’s not always easy to make it taste great. There are even recipes to grill salad – who knew? But the grilled desserts “take the cake” such as grilled nectarines with coconut cream, and other delicious sounding treats!

I recently heard about the Paleo Diet, and grilling seems like an awesome way to start the diet ! My problem with diets is always controlling the amount of carbs I eat, and that was the one reason why I have not tried the paleo diet before, but this book includes delicious recipes for grilling vegetables and salads, like the grilled romaine salad and the cherry tomato salad in grilled avocado cups, which I'm eager to try. With those, getting my carbs shouldn't be a problem !

EXCERPT:One afternoon in late October four lean mules, with stringy muscles dragging over their bones, stretched long legs at the whirring of their master’s whip. The canalman was a short, ill-favored brute, with coarse red hair and freckled skin. His nose, thickened by drink, threatened the short upper lip with obliteration. Straight from ear to ear, deep under his chin, was a zigzag scar made by a razor in his boyhood days, and under emotion the injured throat became convulsed at times, causing his words to be unintelligible. The red flannel shirt, patched with colors of lighter shades, lay open to the shoulders, showing the dark, rough skin.

“Git—git up!” he stuttered; and for some minutes the boat moved silently, save for the swish of the water and the patter of the mules’ feet on the narrow path by the river.

From the small living-room at one end of the boat came the crooning of a woman’s voice, a girlish voice, which rose and fell without tune or rhythm. Suddenly the mules came to a standstill with a “Whoa thar!”

“Pole me out a drink, Scraggy,” bawled the man, “and put a big snack of whisky in it—see?”

The boulder-shaped head shot forward in command as he spoke. And he held the reins in his left hand, turning squarely toward the scow. Pushing out a dark, rusty, steel hook over which swung a ragged coat-sleeve, he displayed the stump of a short arm.

As the woman appeared at the bow of the boat with a long stick on the end of which hung a bucket, Lem Crabbe wound the reins about the steel hook and took the proffered pail in the fingers of his left hand.

“Ye drink too much whisky, Lem,” called the woman. “Ye’ve had as many as twenty swigs today. Ye’ll get no more till we reaches the dock—see?”

To this Lem did not reply. His shrewd eyes traveled up and down the girlish figure in evil meaning. His thick lips opened, and the swarthy cheeks went awry in a grimace. Before the hideous spasm of his silent merriment the woman who loved him paled, and turned away with a shudder. She slouched down the short flight of steps, and the man, with a grin, malicious and cunning, lifted the tin pail to his lips.

“It’s time for her to go,” he muttered as he wiped his mouth, “it’s time for her to go! Git back here, Scraggy, and take this ‘ere drink cup!”

Romantic, suspenseful, & downright captivating By MEW I found this book at a used bookstore and decided to buy it based on the picture inside the book of a lovely young woman (plus I think it was only $3.00). Little did I know that I just bought my favorite book. The first chapter is hard to get through because of the character's accents, but it doesn't take long to adjust. I was immediately drawn in because of the vivid wording describing the people, area they lived, and the strange way they spoke. It immediately envelopes you in a sense of misery and fear. I couldn't recommend this book enough, I truly think it's a masterpiece that anyone could enjoy. The plot is beautifully written and intricately woven; I've never felt so strongly for the characters of a book.

Sadly, it is a reminder that the exploitation of children not only existed long ago, but is still alive and well in our culture today. A fantastic read!

Blankenship Well, it took me about three years of on and off reading to finish this work, but I finally managed it. I am delighted I did so, and feel much richer for the accomplishment. This book, first published in 1789 is a worthwhile read on so many levels. Gilbert White, like the vast majority of naturalists, and indeed, scientists, of the time, was an Anglican Cleric. Most who participated in the study of science (overall known as "Natural History"), and the world around them were either like White, or they were financially independent gentlemen, such as Charles Darwin and his contemporaries, who had the time, inclination and wealth to indulge their interests. This does not mean though that their work was any less valid, and this certainly holds true for Gilbert White and his wonderful "The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne."White spent quite a number of years observing and recording the world around him in Southern England. He has recorded his finding in this work which comes in the forms of letters written to various peers. All things "natural" were considered by White; birds, animals, plants, climatic changes, building material, seasonal changes, et al. The author, primarily an ornithologist, was one of the first to advocate and practice the study of birds through direct observation, rather than killing and collecting. He was one of the first that used bird calls as a means of identification. His study of earthworms in 1770 predated Darwin's famous study by quite a number of years. His writings are some of the first recorded observations of modern phenology. The reading of this work, for me, took some effort. The style and syntax are of course Victorian, or in this case, pre-Victorian. I found I had to drag all of my old Latin books from my school days out (hey, it has been over forty years) and found that a very large dictionary of the English Language an absolute must. There was also the problem of taxology. To be quite frank, at that time, it was a mess. Some species had numerous scientific names and dozens upon dozens of local or regional names. I read the 1901 edition of this book, and I can assure you that it is not footnoted to take care of this problem...you are on your own! The complete and very large dictionary is necessary due to the many, many archaic terms and words used in this work. The vocabulary used in this book simply is not common, unless of course this is the area of your education and expertise. These problems and the chore of reading sentences that run for half a page were daunting, but to be honest, that was part of the charm of the book and part of its strength. It forces the reader (at least it did me), to get off their duff and actually do some research. I learn so much when I read one of these old works. It is worth the struggle!Overall tough, you will find the author's style quite crisp and to the point when you consider the era in which it was written. His powers of observation are wonderful and if you read his words closely, you can almost imagine yourself standing with him as he is observing, recording and speculating on his numerous subjects. What a mind the man must have had. I would have loved to have spent several days just setting and talking with him. If you get a chance, get a copy, an old one preferably, and give this one a try. I feel, like me, you will not be sorry you did.

23 of 24 people found the following review helpful. watching nature carefully with great amusement By neil hoffmann Gilbert White lived the quietest life, but he succeeded in gaining the attention of all the prominent naturalists of the 18th century. His only book was the result of years of observations of his gardens and surrounding countryside of southern England. Written in the form of letters to interested fellow naturalists, White comments on birds, geology, insects, and even a visit to a North American moose that has been imported by a neighbor. As a writer, Gilbert White is astute in combining his observations with a charming delight in everything he sees that makes the reader want to follow him wherever he goes.

(I would recommend any books by Edwin Way Teale if you want to read about nature. He'll keep you interested all the way through his books.) This one was a real snoozer.

This book was written in 1857 and is just as valid today as it was back then. There is a very touching story at the end of the book that tells about a very sick woman and her children who were baptized. It stresses the importance of the seal of baptism and how baptism is an act of love and a relationship in a covenant of what God has done for us. I would recommend this book for others to read.

Going Against the Grain!

Walk into your neighborhood grocery store and look at the items on the shelves. Everywhere you look you see 'Diet this, and Low-Fat that' among other claims. What the hell happened to just normal, real, food? Food that actually tastes good! Around my house we eat food that's prepared the old-fashioned way, and it tastes good! The word 'Diet' is also considered a curse word, never to be uttered under my roof! This little book is a tongue-in-cheek look, with a little Southern humor thrown in, at how some people simply eat what they want, and make no apologizes for their choices. Pick it up today, and see how the other half lives!

Franz Kafka (3 July 1883 – 3 June 1924) was a German-language writer of novels and short stories, regarded by critics as one of the most influential authors of the 20th century. Kafka strongly influenced genres such as existentialism. Most of his works, such as "Die Verwandlung" ("The Metamorphosis"), "Der Prozess" ("The Trial"), and "Das Schloss" ("The Castle"), are filled with the themes and archetypes of alienation, physical and psychological brutality, parent–child conflict, characters on a terrifying quest, labyrinths of bureaucracy, and mystical transformations. Kafka was born into a middle-class, German-speaking Jewish family in Prague, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In his lifetime, most of the population of Prague spoke Czech, and the division between Czech- and German-speaking people was a tangible reality, as both groups were strengthening their national identity. The Jewish community often found itself in between the two sentiments, naturally raising questions about a place to which one belongs. Kafka himself was fluent in both languages, considering German his mother tongue. Kafka trained as a lawyer and, after completing his legal education, obtained employment with an insurance company. He began to write short stories in his spare time. For the rest of his life, he complained about the little time he had to devote to what he came to regard as his calling. He regretted having to devote so much attention to his "Brotberuf" ("day job", literally "bread job"). Kafka preferred to communicate by letter; he wrote hundreds of letters to family and close female friends, including his father, his fiancée Felice Bauer, and his youngest sister Ottla. He had a complicated and troubled relationship with his father that had a major effect on his writing. He also suffered conflict over being Jewish, feeling that it had little to do with him, although critics argue that it influenced his writing.Table of Contents:- The Metamorphosis- A Country Doctor- A Hunger Artist- A Report for an Academy- An Imperial Message- Before the Law- In the Penal Colony- Jackals and Arabs- The Great Wall of China- The Hunter Gracchus- The Trial- Up in the Gallery

Copy editors needed By Tom Williams I'm glad I finally got to read some Kafka, especially "The Trial," but there were enough scanning / OCR / transcription errors to distract me from just reading. Unfortunately, that is a fair critique of most of the low-price Kindle books in general. I'm not sure it's excusable. Were it not for that (all too common) problem, I would have given it at least 4 stars.

Vegetables integrates with this diet incredibly well. They are very high in protein, which makes them the perfect choice for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You might be tempted, but there is nothing to be gained by neglecting vegetables. If you have your favorites, that is fine, but do your best to have some variety. Do not confine yourself to only one or two different vegetables. Perhaps you are in the mood for eggplant for breakfast, and if so, you might consider having mushrooms for lunch, and spinach for dinner. Limiting your vegetable intake will rob you of precious proteins, minerals, and nutrients. Potatoes and corn are the only two you will want to avoid, because they are both rich in starch. Moving away from vegetables, you also have to be careful in the dairy aisle. Fat-free products should be avoided on the wheat belly diet. It might seem odd, but you want to go with full fat. This will help your body with staying balanced. Cheeses including cheddar cheese, parmesan cheese, and Monterey Jack are three good choices. Just make sure you buy the fatty version of whichever cheese you decide to go with. Cooking the food you purchase might also be necessary. If so, and if the food is cooked in oil, make sure you use one of the healthy cooking oils like extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, or flaxseed oil. Butter should only be applied lightly to foods that need it. Organic butter is no exception to that.

Simple and tasty recipes for those on a wheat free diet By Mike I don’t consume wheat because of gluten intolerance, but this book also goes into other positive side effects of eliminating wheat from your diet regardless of any intolerances or allergies. The author first of all points out that skipping wheat allows you to lose weight, but also has other health benefits like stabilizing blood sugar and lowering cholesterol. Not only that, the author states that cutting out wheat can reduce risks of diabetes, arthritis and heart disease. That is huge! Then on to the recipes… These are definitely impressive! There are no less than 101 recipes in this book, giving you plenty of options to make wheat free meals. There are recipes for all meals, so you can enjoy nice breakfasts like ricotta and strawberry crepes, tasty lunches like steak and veggie fajita and lovely meals like Indian chicken curry. The recipes are simple (not too many ingredients) and their structure is clear and straightforward. What I liked is that each recipe includes a nice picture and also indicates the number of calories, protein etc. per serving. All in all, a nice recipe book for those on a wheat free diet! The only criticism I have is that the hyperlinks in the book weren’t working. The book was recently published at the time of writing this review, so I guess the author will fix it in a future edition. It’s also not too much of a biggie really, because these are links to wheat-free ingredients like flaxseed wraps and gluten-free bread, but you can find those yourself when shopping online or at your local supermarket.

By Daniel Miller If you are looking to lose weight and have tried many diets but they didn't work out, you have the right book here. The Wheat belly diet is the perfect diet to lose weight. What happens in this diet is that you eliminate all the wheat from your daily diet thus overcoming the barrier that has been stopping your weight loss. The Wheat belly diet works wonders and the book also has tons of great and healthy recipes. All these recipes are wheat free. Few of my favourite recipes have to be Cheddar Egg muffins, Steak and Veggie Fajita and Chicken Nuggets.I highly recommend this book to everyone.

We particularly love not having to buy bread with wheat and the bread recipes are so delicious, one might overeat! The book offers enough of the science behind the cookbook to not only provide fast prep but also a fast read to get you on board. I have purchased this book for gifts and the recipients have actually used them more than I expected.

By PAIGE GRAENING This lives up to its description on Amazon as far as scope and detail are concerned. The compilers certainly did a thorough vetting of Proust a and establishing his relative place in the world of literati. Useful as a reference book, but not for "a good read".
