The great poetic tradition of pre-Christian Scandinavia is known to us almost exclusively though the Prose Edda, a collection of narrative literature, and its companion, the Poetic Edda. The poems originated in Iceland, Norway, and Greenland between the ninth and 13th centuries, when they were compiled in a unique manuscript known as the Codex Regius. The poems are primarily lyrical rather than narrative. Terry's fine translation includes the magnificent cosmological poem, "The Völuspá", didactic poems concerned with mythology and the everyday conduct of life, and heroic poems, of which an important group is concerned with the story of Sigurd and Brynhild.

Poems of the Elder Edda will appeal to students of Old Norse, Icelandic, and Medieval literature, as well as to general readers and listeners of poetry. This audio version presents each poem followed by the translator's notes.

The "Plain Speaking" Edda By Amazon Customer I facilitate a monthly bookclub where we compare various translations, stanza by stanza, of the Poetic Edda. The point is to notice the differences in translation and discuss what they might mean in order to more completely understand the verse.THIS is the book I refer to when I want to be sure what the heck a particular verse REALLY means! If I am confused or want to double-check that I've properly understood something, it's where I turn. When someone asks me which translation I would reccomend to beginning lore scholars, I usually suggest this one, because it is easy to understand. It might sacrifice flowery language, or not make the attempt to re-create the poetic rhythym of the original Old Norse that other translations do, but it is uncompromisingly direct.(I call it the "No Bull" translation.)

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Better Than Most Translations By Manny I think Patricia Terry's translation of the Poetic Edda, is without a doubt the best I have read. Even though she leaves out two stories, it STILL should be read. Easy, fun and entertaining. Loved It!!!!!

9 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Not what I expected By Kenny This translation was not what I expected. I have read the Elder/Poetic Edda before, but the copy I had previously was electronic. I bought this translation so I could have a hard copy that was a new translation. What I wish I had known was the translator edited her translation based on what she thinks was added by Christian monks who transcribed the Edda. I have spent quite a bit of time studying the conversion of the Scandinavian people to Christianity and I know that was a problem, but I still would have liked to see it in its entirety and been able to judge for myself what was added and not added. I am currently looking for a better translation to add to my collection.

"[...] A dim light among the trees warned him of the approach of day, and Kagh looked about for a place to take a nap. Immediately in his path a prostrate pine trunk with a snug hollow at the center offered an inviting shelter, but when the porcupine poked in his blunt black nose, he found the retreat occupied. A red fox lay curled in a furry ball, fast asleep. Even in slumber, however, a fox is alert. At the sound of Kagh's heavy breathing the occupant of the log was instantly wide awake. By right of discovery and occupation the hollow trunk belonged to the fox, but Kagh's moral sense was either lacking or undeveloped. He wanted the hollow. Therefore he set about securing it in the easiest and most effective way.[...]".

First the result of a rigorous selection, in total independence, this Champagnes guide aims at highlighting Champagnes of high-end expression, source of intense emotions and pleasure when tasted.ese 100 Champagnes represent a terroir, a genuine savoir-faire, and a true passion. Here, no ranking, hierarchy, marks, blind tastings, intended to reassure the reader and be a proof of honesty and exactitude. How can we give a mark to a pleasure, an emotion? No, just “Favourites” that translate the emotions and pleasure felt by the tasters who, on the contrary, have the maximum of information about the tasted Champagne, to better explain and comprehend it as a whole. is guide offers a new approach, unique, enthusiast and logical, far from the tradiotnal tasting comments that assess and rank the Champagnes. Here the key words are discovery and openmindedness. e goal is absolutely not to judge but to understand the selected Champagne, and above all to meet the producer and comprehend his approach, perceive his inspiration. e objective clearly is to set Champagne back in its real place, to consider it as a cultural product, a piece of art, the result of the encounter between a terroir and men, to highlight the savoir-faire, the talent and the enological creativity of the Champagne makers. Directed by Michel VERON, enologist, enology teacher at Lycée Viticole de la Champagne since more than 20 years, this book is the fruit of his passion for the tasting of Champagnes and his long experience enriched by many encounters with the Champagne makers.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Unsafe at Ultra Speeds By Paul Camp Well, you roll down roads Over fresh green grass With your lorry loads Pumpin' Petrol gas And you make 'em long And you make 'em tough But they just go on and on And it seems that you can't get off. -- Cat StevensRick Rafael (1919-1994) was a writer who appeared in the late 1950s and 1960s, mostly in _Astounding/ Analog_, and then sank out of sight. He specialized in either humorous stories or "if this goes on--" science fiction stories about current day social problems. _Code Three_ (1965), Raphael's first novel, is one of the latter type of tales. It was written before the gas crunch became a reality, but much of its extrapolation still rings true.It has been said that _Code Three_ is is a Hugo nominee, and that is technically true. But it bears a bit of explanation. It was never nominated for the Hugo as a _novel_. It is a fixup novel comprised of three novellas. The first two novellas, "Code Three" and "Once a Cop," were published in _Analog_ (in the Feb., 1963 and the the May, 1964 issues, respectively). Each of these tales was nominated for the Hugo in 1963 and 1964 but did not win.* On the strength of this, the novel was said to be a "Hugo nominee".What about the novel itself? It is an _Analog_- style "story-with-rivets": not a lot of surprises or poetic dazzle, but solid enough on the high-tech and the detail. What if our superhighways continue as they have been and become wider and wider and tougher and tougher? And what if cars were made bigger and bigger and faster and faster (600 mph and up)? Humans remain flesh and bone and not any smarter than they ever were before. It is now up to the cops and ambulance crews to maintain the same jobs with the same headaches-- only multiplied a hundredfold. It is true that they have improvements in technology to help them. But the basic problems are still the same. The novel focuses on a crew of three NorCon cops working out of a patrol car that polices the Throughway System that extends from Alaska to the southern tip of Mexico. They are Sergeant Ben Martin, Trooper Clay Ferguson, and Medical Surgical Officer Kelly Lightfoot (half Irish and half AmerInd). But perhaps just as impressive is their car itself-- part armored car, part jail, part wrecker, part ambulance:Car 56-- "Beulah" to her team-- was a standard NorCon patrol vehicle. She was 60 feet long, 12 feet wide and 12 feet high, topped by a four-foot-high bubble canopy over the cab. All the way across her nose was a three-foot-wide-luminescent strip. This was the variable beam headlight that could cut a day-bright swath of light through night, fog, rain, or snow and could be varied in intensity, width, and elevation. Immediately above the headlight strip were two red-black plastic panels which, when lighted, sent out a red flashing emergency signal that could be seen for miles... Her bow rounded down like an old-time tank and blended into the track assembly of her dual propulsion system. With the exception of the cabin bubble and the two-foot stepdown on the last 15 feet of her hull, Beulah was as free of external protrusions as a baby's behind. (11)And it can be impressive to watch Beulah in action:At ultra-high speeds Beulah never touched the ground-- floating on an impeller air cushion and driven forward by a pair of 150,000-pound thrust jets and ramjets. At intermediate high speeds, both her air cushion and the four-foot-wide tracks on each side of the car pushed her along at 200-mile-an-hour-plus speeds. Synchromechanisms reduced the air cushions as the speeds dropped to afford more surface traction for the tracks. For slow speeds and heavy duty, the tracks carried the burden. (12)As for the people, I wish that they were as impressive as Beulah. Unfortunately, all too often, they tend to talk in dialogue much like this:"Hey," Clay called out, "I've got a real hot doll in Toronto and I'll gladly sell her phone number for the proper price.""Wouldn't want to hurt you, Clay," the other officer replied. "If I called her up and took her out, she'd throw rocks at you the next time you drew the run. It's all for your own good.""Oh, get lost in a cloverleaf," Clay retorted. (17)The action of the novel is somewhat episodic, but not plotless. In the first third of the novel, we watch a rescue operation unfold at a bad smashup and then see how it leads into a manhunt for a ruthless hit-and-run killer. Much of the action in part two involves an entitled millionaire who is seeking to release his spoiled son from DUI and bribery charges. I do not want to give too much away about the plot of the final third of the novel. But I believe that Raphael is gradually shifting away from a question of _how_ future police work is done to questions of _why_. What sort of society are we living in that makes bigger roads and faster cars to accomodate a lemming like population of speed freaks?I have noticed that a few Amazon reviewers of _Code Three_ are policemen. I am not a policeman. But I do have many friends and relatives in the Fire Department and the Ambulance Service in Chattanooga. I have heard my share of War Stories over the years. It seems to me that Raphael gets a lot of things right: how dispatchers give out information, how cars act on the freeway, how paramedics administer first aid in crisis situations, how routine arrests and tickets are made, and how vacation time is handled. He deserves a few points for making the background of his tale seem authentic._Note_: Some reprinted versions of _Code Three_ have been greatly cut, featuring only the title story. I recommend that you buy a hardback (such as the Simon & Schuster edition) or a good paperback (such as the Berkeley paperback) that will give you the full-length novel.* For the record, the winners were: "No Truce With Kings" by Poul Anderson (1963) and "Soldier, Ask Not" by Gordon R. Dickson (1964).

"In the first complete chronological narrative of the species from emergence to extinction...archaeologist Dimitra Papagianni and science historian Michael Morse have shaped a gem." ―Nature

In recent years, the common perception of the Neanderthals has been transformed, thanks to new discoveries and paradigm-shattering scientific innovations. It turns out that the Neanderthals’ behavior was surprisingly modern: they buried the dead, cared for the sick, hunted large animals in their prime, harvested seafood, and communicated with spoken language. Meanwhile, advances in DNA technologies are compelling us to reassess the Neanderthals’ place in our own past. For hundreds of thousands of years, Neanderthals evolved in Europe parallel to Homo sapiens evolving in Africa, and, when both species made their first forays into Asia, the Neanderthals may even have had the upper hand. In this important volume, Dimitra Papagianni and Michael A. Morse compile the first full chronological narrative of the Neanderthals’ dramatic existence―from their evolution in Europe to their expansion to Siberia, their subsequent extinction, and ultimately their revival in popular novels, cartoons, cult movies, and television commercials. 77 illustrations, 20 in color

By Axie Barclay Much speculation and misinformation exists about Neanderthals, but what does recent research and the latest scientific innovation reveal about them? Dimitra Papagianni and Michael A. Moore delve into this, discussing the surprisingly modern behavior of Neanderthals, in their book, //The Neanderthals Rediscovered: How Modern Science is Rewriting Their Story//.From the first humans to the caricatures about Stone Age man, //The Neanderthals Rediscovered// covers a swath of early human history, concentrating on Neanderthals, and the archaeological record of some Homo species in Europe. Were the Neanderthals the victors over other species? Were they bred out of existence or overthrown? Papagianni and Moore discuss this as well, along with what can be inferred about daily life, Neanderthal spread and decline, and their legacy to modern culture. This is definitely a book for everyone with interest in human origins, with an emphasis on the Neanderthal perspective. It a reads less like a textbook and more like a novel, simultaneously informing the scholar but not talking down to the lay person. Rather than being given facts and figures, it feels as though the reader is interacting with the author and sharing in the love for exploration of human origins and exuberance of discovery.--Review also provided to portlandbookreview.com

Good accessible summary of current research By Adam Together with ANCESTOR by RAYMOND STEYN (science thriller, i.e. fiction) this my favourite 'recent' book on Neanderthals. It contained a good summary of the latest Neanderthal research, and was written in an easily 'digestible' manner. The last chapter was especially entertaining (the authors' take on Neanderthal representation in popular culture. I have to agree with them - why are fictional Neanderthals always portrayed as telepathic? Surely there are other uses for a big brain? In fact, I don't think fiction authors need to embellish much - the facts are interesting enough). The one thing that struck me, though (and this isn't the book fault), is that so many theories (even mainstream ones) are based on very few facts. Scientists just don't seem willing to accept that certain things will never be revealed (societal structures, norms, behaviours). Unless you can invent a time machine, it's impossible to study these extinct societies in action. Also, the attitude towards Neanderthals throughout history seems extremely prejudiced. Many scientists today accept that, given a similar brain size, cognitive abilities were probably similar too. There's no way to deduct this from fossils or other artefacts. Which is why a clone (for which the technology is getting more plausible by the day - hence my reference to the fictional ANCESTOR) is the only thing that will settle the debate. All in all, though, a very informative book, with good language use throughout.

By Bernd Lambert Without being an authority on ancient humans, I have always been a proponent of Neanderthal culture. They have consistently been depicted as clearly subhuman, both in academic works and in fiction. Now we have an account of the latest research, which credits them with language and with enough culture to bury their dead, decorate their bodies symbolically, and invent new tools. They needed all that, and more, to survive as big-game hunters in Ice Age Europe. The authors also have interesting things to say about the reasons Neanderthals finally became extinct, after coexisting with anatomically modern humans for thousands of years.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. lots of great recipes! By Crystal E This book is well laid out, ingredient list and instruction list or formatted to be easy to read like a normal recipe book. I did run into some typos however, and the ones I found are a bit disturbing. Under "cooking time" many of them say "0 minutes", but the instructions tell you to bake them. The only thing in her recipes I would caution you on is not to turn your Chia seeds, flax seeds, hempseed's, into powder before adding to your bars for two reasons:1. Ground or powdered seeds lose their nutrient potency within an hour after being chopped up, especially flax. If you can't eat all the bars in the recipe within the hour, you've wasted the nutrient value of the seeds you put in, so use them whole.2. Whole fiberous seeds (chia, flax, hemp) have more a more useful fiber effect. When powdered, the body doesn't have to work to break things down because it's already broken down. So again, keep your seeds whole.Cooking anything that is basically fiber turns fiber into carbohydrates, because heat breaks fiber down. So go for the non-cooked bars if you can. Some additional advice, go easy on the hempseed…Even though it theoretically does not have THC, (less than 1%, I think) in some people it can create the same "munchies" effect as marijauna, which it is related to. (I happen to be one of those people)It truly is not a good idea for your protein bars to increase your appetite, when a major point of eating them is to decrease it.

Then this book will help you satiate your craving for them. This book not only fulfilled my dream of eating protein bars but also helped me in starting a protein-bar revolution in our group! It clearly distinguished what kind of protein powder is right for me; and, moreover, it took me from being a newbie to being a pro in just 31 recipes. The steps are written in a clear and easy-to-understand manner without the confusing terms. If you also love eating delicious food and still stay fit and healthy, this book will help you realize that dream. Included here are vegan protein bar recipes and a gluten-free one, too. This book is very brief without the unnecessary information that we don’t need. What’s the price compared to the lifelong benefits I could get from this book?

Kind of like when we went gluten free--the recipes call for all kinds of expensive ingredients. After spending probably $75 to $100 on these, we discovered that substituting rice flour in place of the wheat flour in normal recipes gives better results than using all the expensive ingredients (and we can make rice flour ourselves).

Excellent study of a neglected writer By Steve Hackett I highly recommend this study of Barbara Pym, along with her wonderful series of lightly satiric novels. I had an English literature class with Dr. Salwak in my freshman year of college back in 1974, which made a deep impression on me. The book has many of the qualities that have made him such a fine teacher.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic Story of a Present Day Couple and an Incredible Secret Connected to Jane Austen By Sophia Rose A mysterious connection between a modern English Literature scholar and historian with one of the greats of English writing, Jane Austen, leads to a quest turning what is known about that famous author's life on it's ear. A locket with secrets, a cryptic clue, dangerous adversaries, a roguish treasure hunter, and a determine woman made this an incredible journey to the truth and no life is left unchanged as a result. It's a dark, bittersweet fantastical tale that grabbed my attention from the beginning.Violet Desmond learns on the death of her grandmother that her whole life has been a lie and that the last words the woman speaks and the gift of a locket lead Violet on a quest led by none other than Jane Austen herself. Violet is a practical sort, but even she must concede to the evidence that the night time dreams, voices in her head and day light visions of Jane Austen's past may mean that she will go mad if she doesn't find the truth for Jane. Strange happenings and coincidences, dangerous near death experiences and the timely introduction to people leave her not knowing who she can trust. Is the powerful Lord of Aerendgast Hollows merely a concerned godfather or a man who won't stop at murder to get what he wants? Against her better judgment, she takes on a treasure hunter as her partner as they try to beat their adversaries to the clues that will fulfill Jane's quest and lead them to incredible finds.Peter Knighton made a mistake that cost him dearly. He is a treasure seeker and now has been blackballed by those who would send him on his hunts, but one stupendous find would restore him in the eyes of the antiquities community. One glimpse of Violet's locket and the clue hidden within tells him that he's onto a huge find. It's not long after he gains Violet's trust that he realizes that breaking it when he seizes the locket and any other artifacts discovered in her quest might not be so easy. He has come to care for the strong-willed prickly woman and wishes to protect her from the others who would see her and the secrets she seeks remain long buried. This story is an incredible 'what if' regarding the life of Jane Austen. What if she fell in love, secretly married and had a child? This alternate past sets a series of events in motion with ramifications that affect people two hundred years later. It was like getting a story within a story as there is Violet and Peter's life in the present and Jane and Edward's lives in the past. I was utterly fascinated by a conspiracy theory type story that also included a tragic love story and a modern one.The story has the feel of an early effort- not entirely polished. Transitions between scenes and even dialogue took some adjustment. There is also a passive feel once in a while that caused distance and didn't always allow me to fully engage with the characters and plot. Some scenes that would have been really intense if teased out a bit were summarized or glossed over. This is not to say that I couldn't engage with the story at all because trust me I teared up a few times, laughed and flipped pages hard and fast during some really intense moments, but I felt that it could have been even better. The characters were drawn well and I liked how there was a sense that every character around the heroine other than her old school chums were suspect. The twists and turns of the plot had me switching opinions often. I will say that I struggled to understand Edward, Jane's love interest. The author wrote him well, but I learned to feel such disappointment in him. I don't want to say too much and spoil it for others, but his actions were pivotal particularly when he failed to act. He was in such stark contrast to Violet's Peter. Peter started out a rogue who was struggling when everything he felt that defined him was taken away and he wanted that back at any cost- at first. Then he realized that some things would cost to much and he started to develop and grow as he worked alongside Violet. Peter slowly restored Violet's faith in relationships and trust along the way.The end was exciting and the denouement offered yet one more twist that left me laughing. It also left things open-ended. I couldn't tell if it was the sort of tantalizing finish that was meant to leave the reader wondering or if it was left that way because there is more to come. Either way would be brilliant. All in all, I had a fantastic time reading this book and would recommend it to those who would enjoy an alternative history for one of their favorite authors. There are many references to people, places and scenes from Jane Austen's books to hook the Austen lover, but the overall story would be of interest to anyone who enjoys romantic suspense with a paranormal twist. My thanks to Meryton Press and Leathensberry Tours for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. What: a mysterious web of events, clues, connections and persons of interest playing out over centuries! By S. L. Majczan This book was a kindle loan. Thank you.I read both Christina's and Sophia's reviews and will not repeat here the plot lines as they gave us excellent rundowns of such. But I will add that I loved this story; I could not put it down. In fact I am wrestling with whether to buy my own copy for future re-readings or if I want to re-read it a.s.a.p. before the kindle loan terminates. As was stated before there are passages which need slow and contemplative re-reading but I was so anxious to solve the mystery that I plunged ahead. From my point of view we have three parallel story lines herein: first we have Violet's story. That tale in itself is one of mystery; her parents died in an accident when she was a baby. Subsequently, she was brought up by a "grandmother", Millie Desmond. But even in reading of how the grandmother reared her, we are told of an isolated life with no extended family. Coinciding with the grandmother's death are mysterious accidents, visions, voices, diaries and persons, all of which, disrupt Violet's life. NOT to mention, Violet’s own identity is called into question. And, as stated previously, Violet soon has reason not to trust ANYONE she meets in the time after her grandmother's death.Secondly, those visions and voices soon are revealed to be that of Jane Austen who relates some very surprising and then tragic parts of her life. Is this real? Why would Jane select Violet, of all people, and at this time in history to reveal parts of her life history – or is she revealing another plot for a book? Is Violet delusional? After all, so many lovers of Jane Austen and her works have researched and validated what we do know. What connection could Violet possibly have with Jane all these centuries later?Lastly, there is a diary. Violet does not read the “Diary of Margaret Cassandra Devereux Atherton” in one sitting. Plus this story does jump from real time to the diary to the visions/voices from Jane throughout. I didn’t find it very difficult to realize where we were in the parallel tales. Italic wording is used to set off the real time/present day from the other stories.Where I had a problem was in keeping track of who was who in the story. Edward Fulham, Peter Knighton, David, George Carson, Everett McGillis, the Browns, Lord Francis Desmond, Lord and Lady Pembroke, Lord Blake Lockhurst, Desmonds, Athertons, etc. I may have to write out a chart for references in the re-reading. And then there are all the locations used in trying to solve clues. Many of the locations are familiar from Jane Austen’s works but there are a few new to me. i.e., Manydown.I found that although the story was wrapped up satisfactorily the author, at the same time, dangled a carrot making me anticipate her next book. I trust that there will be a next story. There has to be a sequel!I highly recommend this story to all readers.

By Christina Boyd I’ve read a few really great fictions where Jane Austen’s life as we know it has been re-imagined and re-written: “The Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen” and “Jane Austen’s First Love” both by Syrie James, “The Persuasion of Miss Jane Austen” by Shannon Winslow, and even the Jane Austen Mystery series by Stephanie Barron. The debut novel by Rachel Berman, “Aerenghast: The Lost History of Jane Austen”, had me all anticipation waiting for its release. The premise is by far the most daring and most challenging to undertake: the discovery of a direct line to our dear Miss Austen. Violet Desmond, PHD in British history as well as literature, is driven to discover the truth, not just for the obvious consequences of how the world will forever know this literary treasure but to save her own sanity, and maybe even her own life. But who is covering up this centuries-old secret and why does Violet feel her own life is at stake? And to what benefit? We are privy to Miss Austen’s point-of-view as upon the recent death of Violet’s grandmother, Violet has begun to see Jane in trance-like visions. “Through Violet’s dreams, Austen revealed her life story, only it was much darker than the familiar tale she had just told her students, and Violet felt Jane’s pain and pleasures as acutely as if they were her own. It haunted Violet during the day and hounded her at night as she struggled to understand what was happening. She wondered whether she was going mad and avoided sleep in a desperate attempt to impede the dreams. She did not know why, but something deep down in her sensed that soon she would no longer have the luxury of ignoring them.”Like so many, Violet had presumed Jane Austen might have used the minutiae in her own life to help construct her novels but after experiencing a heartrending vision, hearing Jane Austen’s own words confirmed as much. “I make a decision to rewrite my story as many times and in as many different ways as I am able until it ends happily—at least for my characters if not for me.”As the mystery takes us on a wild, and often dangerous chase through England and secret chambers and catacombs, I found I had to re-read certain passages to follow the intricate details that lead to the near cataclysmic finale. But Berman’s thrilling, moving, and wholly satisfying ending left me hopeful about a possible second book. Dauntless first novel from a promising, emerging author.

"[...]stockings are a mass of runs from those nasty brambles!” “Humph! Just think how lucky you are to be alive,” suggested Dorothy callously. “Look—we’re coming into another meadow. Yes—and there’s a light—must be a house up there on the hill.” “What if they won’t let us in?” wailed Betty. They were heading across the meadow, now, toward the hill. Dorothy stopped and turned the flashlight on her friend. “You certainly are a gloom!” she declared angrily. “Do you think I’m enjoying this? My shoes and stockings are ruined, too, and this ducky dress I’m crazy about has a rip in the skirt a yard long. It will probably be worse by the time we get through the brush on that hillside. But there’s absolutely no use in whining about it—and there’s not a darned thing to be scared of. Is that clear to[...]".

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. A light read! By Enjoy life Quaint, old fashioned and probably a "penny dreadful", but nonetheless a racing tale with twists and turns. I enjoyed it (but won't remember it for any length of time.)

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Twisted but fun By Frankie T. Allen, Jr. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone that likes a story with more twists and turns than a tornado on a roller coaster. From beginning to end there is no real clue how the story is going to end. While the style of the writing could be confusing at times, it was more like listening to several people sitting around, each telling their part of a bigger story. Strange, but effective.

You must read this book! After you have not only will you have a sound understanding of Paleo, but you will see that it is undoubtedly the best diet for you. This isn’t your typical cookbook filled with recipes and that’s all. I go in depth about the paleo diet; why low carb paleo foods for breakfast accelerate fat loss, 30 different foods to have for breakfast (with recipes and nutrition facts), I will educate you fully about the paleo diet and why it works for fat loss, and more! Paleo has no special pills or quirky combinations and the best thing is that it doesn’t involve starving or eating lots and lots of so called diet products. All that is required is for you to eat in a similar way to your paleolithic ancestors. Then when you have eaten in this way you will marvel at the additional energy you have, because you have rewired your body into burning fat for fuel rather than sugar. Fat is a longer, more sustainable energy source as it is 9 calories per gram, when carbs have a measly 4 calories per gram which burns off in the blink of an eye leaving your body thinking it needs more for energy (hence the carb cravings). The chances are that you are like many in thinking that your body is totally invincible, well unfortunately this is not true! The sad thing is that you have probably been eating in the same way for years and therefore never had the chance to really feel good or lose that unwanted excess fat. Once you make the switch to Paleo you will see just how much better you look and feel. It will literally change your life. The book covers the following topics: - What is the Paleo diet? - Why go Paleo and what are the advantages? - What you can & can’t eat - Breakfast – Get the day started off right - 30 Paleo breakfast ideas - Paleo Myths Busted

Paleo Confusion By Simonsen In the beginning of the book it describes Paleo okay foods, but then many items in the recipes are no no's, like dairy products and quinoa. So I was confused as to whether these items are actually ok. If they are not then these are not Paleo recipes and should be titled different.

"[...] What was it that Mrs. Cartwright had said to her? "You look as if a charm had touched you." Could that have meant more than her friend had known? Olwen threw another wondering, searching look into her glass.... Was it her imagination, or did she look prettier already than she had ever before seen herself? Oh.... She stood there, reflected; an image of Uncertainty hovering between belief and doubt. "Uncle wouldn't believe a word of it, I'm sure," she told herself. "I'm sure he thought he'd thrown the letter away. He may be quite right, of[...]".

It's interesting getting a glimpse of life in England in the WWI-era. It helps bridge the gap for me between 100 years earlier and almost 100 years later.

I love some of the older books and this is an author I wouldn't mind giving another try. Although I did most certainly enjoy some parts of this book, there were a lot of characters in addition to the two primary ones and those minor characters took up more than half of the book. The book takes place during wartime in England and features the following locales - a hotel in France, London and Wales. The book is centered around the life of a 19 year old Welsh woman, Olwen, who is spending some time at a hotel in France where she serves as a secretary to her elderly uncle - a botany professor. One day he receives a letter in the mail that includes a love charm sachet and goes on to describe those individuals who have a "disturbing charm" further implying the enclosed substance can be a "giver" of such charm - which of course he reads and then tosses. However, Olwen comes upon the packet and decides she knows some folks who could use such a packet, including her very own self, so she carefully separates the substance into four packets and immediately begins to hand them out to individuals she believes need a bit of help in the romance area, carefully tying one around her neck.At the same hotel are certain military personnel who are recovering from injuries sustained in the war, including one Captain Ross of Canadian-Scottish background. Olwen is captivated by Captain Ross who considers himself to be the expert on "all that is woman" and his views on the subject are often to be heard by anyone within the sound of his voice. After the charms have been given out, Olwen immediately begins to see some very positive results in the lives of others, but nothing that leads her to believe her charm has had an effect on Captain Ross.Fast forward to London, where Olwen is now working at a military center of communications headed up by none other than Captain Ross. He's still as noisy and brusque as ever, although it's obvious to a few people he's quite taken with Olwena. For her part, she has quit wearing the charm and has grown a tad cynical for someone of her youth. But... several men have taken note of Olwena and this is wearing on the know-it-all Captain. Very soon, we see his facade begin to crumble especially after he believes she may have accepted a marriage proposal. It was great to see the fall of the mighty captain. Sweet story.** One caveat** One of the very worst racial terms was used twice in this book in day to day conversation by some of the primary characters - as though it was perfectly appropriate. Surprising to me, because although I read approximately 500 books each year at a minimum, this is the first time I've come across the usage of this word in a book of this genre - even those that were written 100 years ago.

It is light-hearted, amusing and holds up well 100 years after it's publication."The Disturbing Charm" doesn't fare as well. The premise of the story is that a 19-year old Welsh girl comes across a substance purported to be a love charm. She retains some for herself and distributes the rest among three unwitting acquaintances. The story is set during WWI at a Breton sea-side hotel, in London, and briefly, in Wales.Readers who enjoy history would like this glimpse into life in the early 20th century. However, the characters seem stereotypical and the plot veers into maudlin territory. In addition, the book was written in less politically correct times. Readers will find terms, characterizations and ideas are used that would now be considered inappropriate. One interesting aspect of the book is the blossoming of women as they embrace new opportunities and independence, although the men of the story have trouble adjusting to these changes. On the other hand, one woman who must be about 40 is treated as though her life is over and she should live through her children because love is beyond her reach.
