Review “Alongside scores of delightful recipes, Carol Ungar brings to life the meaning and history behind well-known and more obscure Jewish dishes from across the centuries and shares recipes with the warmth and wisdom of the grandmothers she never knew.” —Jewish Herald Voice“I found the balance of flavors in Ungar’s recipe to be perfect.” —Forward"Carol Ungar didn’t design her Jewish Soul Food book as a cookbook in the strict, or even loose, sense of the term. Rather, she intended her book to be a sort of a survival guide for Jewish expats everywhere: It is not only a comprehensive compilation of dishes we Jews love to crave and wax nostalgic about, it is as importantly about the meaning and the mystique around them, what has immortalized those timeless dishes throughout our turbulent history, and what has made them survive.” —Levana’s Whole Foods Kitchen"Even if you have cooked kosher all your life, no doubt you will find some interesting and tempting dishes that you have never tasted before.”—Jewish Connection

Review “Carol Ungar gives us a rare combination: virtuoso writing, spiritual depth, authentic tradition, and delicious recipes. This book is a treat for body, mind, and soul.” (Sara Yoheved Rigler)“Carol Ungar unveils the mystery of each food's mystical connotation, its deliberately designed purpose, and its relationship to specific holiday cuisine, raising our consciousness in such a way that eating becomes a much deeper, more spiritually fulfilling act.” (Yitta Halberstam)

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A whole Jewish education in a cookbook. And recipes too! By rivkah30 I have a friend who worked as a food stylist. He taught me that the pictures of food you see in magazine ads, blogs, infomercials and cookbooks are professionally designed to look spectacular in photos. In real life, they are as likely as not to be inedible.Photographs of cereal often use glue in place of milk. Sesame seed buns might have the sesame seeds placed individually, using a tweezer. Motor oil is sometimes used in place of pancake syrup and meat in ads is generally “cooked” with a blowtorch or hairdryer and then painted with shoe polish to give it the right color. These tricks are a small part of the clever art form known as food styling and it’s in evidence in many contemporary cookbooks, whose oversized, full color pictures on glossy paper have been referred to as food porn.By contrast, the new cookbook Jewish Soul Food: Traditional Fare and What it Means by Carol Ungar, looks like a paperback novel that you’d bring on a beach vacation. It’s filled with hand-drawn illustrations and the photographs are black and white. At first glance, you might be tempted to dismiss this book as a low quality publication. And that would be a mistake.Instead of publishing yet another upscale cookbook, Ungar wrote a cookbook that could only be produced by a cross between a Jewish grandmother and an adult Jewish educator. By eschewing stylized, color photos and writing extensive descriptions about the background of why Jews eat what we eat when we eat it, Ungar connects her readers to Jewish history. One of Ungar’s themes is how the physical, spiritual and cultural aspects of Jewish life merge in food. Her understated, occasionally humorous prose reminds readers, and prospective Jewish cooks, that there’s cultural depth and a measure of Jewish literacy involved in making cabbage soup, teiglach and kreplach.Ungar divides the book into three main sections, corresponding to times when Jews eat ceremonial foods – Shabbat, Jewish holidays and life cycle events. In the modest, 200-page book, she’s included well over 100 recipes. Ungar includes recipes (and explanations) for many familiar dishes like chopped liver and cucumber salad, and for not so familiar dishes, like etrog confit (a sweet-tart jam) and Ruota di Faraone (a meat and pasta casserole from Tuscany).Even if you end up never taking a single pot out from the cabinet, reading Jewish Soul Food is like stepping into a complex, colorful Jewish cultural story. It’s a cookbook, yes. But it’s also a short course in adult Jewish literacy.http://jewishvaluescenter.org/jvoblog/jewish-soul-food

This little book is an intro to Judaism via food. It includes recipes from Jewish communities around the world, and the how, what and why of each dish. The writing style is engaging and recipes I have tried so far have been easy to follow and successful. The author has an incredible breadth of knowledge, a sense of humor and a huge variety of recipes! I'm sending a copy to my mom!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Oldies but greaties By faigie horowitz Reading Carol's book is like meeting an old "heimish" friend, someone you are comfortable with yet smart enough to surprise you again and again. Perusing the pages of these easy recipes is like a tasting in your grandmother's kitchen with some Asian, Sephardic, and fusion additions. It's traditional Jewish fare made simple with family additions, valuable tips, and sources. It's fun to learn about how some of our familiar foods evolved from Talmudic and geographic origins and to follow the diagrams for the multiple challa themes and variations. Some surprises included familiar names with unfamiliar recipes like Rabbi Freifeld's pickled herring; I pictured the jovial sage donning his apron and in a booming voice with his signature wit, concocting and directing preparation of a Shabbat delicacy.

A New York Times Bestseller and New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice

A Best Book of 2015, The Wall Street Journal

"Love is the driver for Wendy Williams's new book, The Horse . . . [an] affectionate, thoroughgoing, good-hearted book." ―Jaimy Gordon, The New York Times Book Review

"Charming and deeply interesting . . . Ms. Williams does a marvelous job." ―Pat Shipman, The Wall Street JournalThe book horse-lovers have been waiting forHorses have a story to tell, one of resilience, sociability, and intelligence, and of partnership with human beings. In The Horse, the journalist and equestrienne Wendy Williams brings that story brilliantly to life.

Williams chronicles the 56-million-year journey of horses as she visits with experts around the world, exploring what our biological affinities and differences can tell us about the bond between horses and humans, and what our longtime companion might think and feel. Indeed, recent scientific breakthroughs regarding the social and cognitive capacities of the horse and its ability to adapt to changing ecosystems indicate that this animal is a major evolutionary triumph.

Williams charts the course that leads to our modern Equus-from the protohorse to the Dutch Warmbloods, Thoroughbreds, and cow ponies of the twenty-first century. She observes magnificent ancient cave art in France and Spain that signals a deep respect and admiration for horses well before they were domesticated; visits the mountains of Wyoming with experts in equine behavior to understand the dynamics of free-roaming mustangs; witnesses the fluid gracefulness of the famous Lipizzans of Vienna; contemplates what life is like for the sure-footed, mustachioed Garrano horses who thrive on the rugged terrain of Galicia; meets a family devoted to rehabilitating abandoned mustangs on their New Hampshire farm; celebrates the Takhi horses of Mongolia; and more. She blends profound scientific insights with remarkable stories to create a unique biography of the horse as a sentient being with a fascinating past and a finely nuanced mind.

The Horse is a revealing account of the animal who has been at our side through the ages, befriending us and traveling with us over the mountains and across the plains. Enriched by Williams's own experience with horses, The Horse is a masterful work of narrative nonfiction that pays tribute to this treasure of the natural world.

27 of 28 people found the following review helpful. Indispensable for horse lovers By Jeff Kelleher When Cortes invaded Mexico in 1519, his conquest was aided by the 16 horses he brought from Spain. The horse was unknown to the native Indians. So horses must have originated in Eurasia, right? Wrong. The earliest evidence of horses is from 56 million years ago, in what is now Wyoming. They flourished for 40 million years on the North American continent before a single one appeared in Asia or Europe. What happened? They became extinct in North America about 8,000-11,000 years ago. This coincided with the advent of humans on the continent. Human slaughter might have contributed to their demise, but there is no certainty and scientists are split on the cause. This is just one of this book's many absorbing facts about the only other creature, along with dogs, that humans have developed a special--even mystical--bond with. Some other absorbing facts: Horses have survived in cold and heat, altitude and flatland, lush plains and arid deserts, because they have been so remarkably adaptable. The earliest horses were about the size of a modern cat, and had four-toed soft paws, the better to navigate the hot marshy environment. This declined to three, then two, then one hard hoof when speed became their main protection against predators. Unlike other mammals, who eat and store, horses have a "conveyor belt" digestive system that speeds the nutrients through. This is why they eat continually. They have "emergent teeth", imbedded deep in the jaw, that continue to grow throughout their lives. They not only can, but must, wear these down by grazing, or they will be unable to close their mouths properly.Horses have about 2/3 the visual acuity of humans--better than most other creatures. But they are almost color-blind, seeing no red and only washed-out blues and greens. This explains why they are sometimes startled by odd shapes that their human rider perceived long before. The most surprising fact, to me at least, is that horses and humans have a common evolutionary ancestor. The evidence is found in the similarity of our joints and skeletons. Is this the reason for our special communion with them?Williams surveys the science behind horse cognition. Much is still unknown. Do they really "think"? Not in the deductive way that humans do, but they have have the capacity to learn by watching, and have good memories. They can, for example, figure out how to open a corral gate or turn on a water spigot by watching humans do it. Are they capable of true emotional bond with humans? Emphatically yes, Williams avers. While scientists are not unanimous, she comes down on the side of those who say that their sociable nature is key to their bond with humans. They don't respond to us just because we give them food and water and apply the stick to undesired behavior. They actually like being with us. I like believing that.

It traces from the very dawn of eohippus, the 4-toed diminutive predecessor of horses as we know them, through the changing global environments that shaped the evolution into the animals we have today.Wendy Williams combines her research and her personal experiences with horses in a very readable style. Frequent reference to the science and to the scientists she interviewed provide support for the views in the book and are excellent leads for your own further study. Much of what is presented is contrary to what has become "conventional wisdom" ... and that's good because too much of today's understanding of horses is grounded in flawed information. She is able to capture the science in very accessible ways to shed light on how humans came to partner so closely with horses. These insights help to understand why our horses behave the ways they do.Highly recommended.

Good natural history book, not just for horse lovers By Amazon Customer I bought this book from another source, so I am not showing up as a verified purchase. I am an everyday reader, not a scientist and not someone with a weird axe to grind. I did not read much about this book before buying it, so I did not know what to expect. So many books about horses boil down to: The horse is a noble animal, we all love horses. This book has a lot of information related to evolution and archeology, which I found fascinating. It could easily have been dry, but instead it's a pleasure because the author has a very fluid writing style and some lovely ways of phrasing things. Although more pictures would be nice, I find it easy to supplement the book with online searches, so that, for example, after reading about the archeological site Grube Messel in the book, I looked up images from it online. You don't have to be a horse lover to enjoy this book, just someone with an interest in the natural world.

Due to the ways in which artificial sweeteners can be potentially harmful to one’s health, we have come up with a cookbook full of sweet treats that are made with more clean and wholesome sweeteners, such as honey and agave nectar. This cookbook both educates about the potentially harmful effects of various artificial sweeteners, as well as providing for alternative recipes for common household grocery items that contain these sweeteners. For instance, we came up with a ginger ale recipe that does not contain all the chemical sweeteners of "diet" ginger ale, while still maintaining a low sugar and calorie count per serving. With four sections: drinks, snacks, desserts, and bonus recipes, this cookbook provides a stepping stone for those looking to live a more clean and health-conscious life.

By MaryAnne Percy-Needham I don't know whether I'm happily reliving my childhood or not, but I'm finding Mary Grant Bruce's work as compelling a read as I did fifty years ago. And this was the one I had never read. I'd wondered how and why Tommy and her brother were suddenly at Billabong, and this gave a wholly satisfactory explanation. The author, who grew up in my part of Australia, thoroughly understands life here. Despite this being written just after the Great War, it's not out-dated. The Billabong people still have to battle bushfires, just as we did four years ago (latest arson attack). Despite writing for young adults, her books are entirely credible, which is the hallmark of a gifted author. Please, please publish the whole set!

A. Merritt was a sci-fi and fantasy writer during the early 20th century. From the prologue: "Before the narrative which follows was placed in my hands, I had never seen Dr. Walter T. Goodwin, its author. When the manuscript revealing his adventures among the pre-historic ruins of the Nan-Matal in the Carolines (The Moon Pool) had been given me by the International Association of Science for editing and revision to meet the requirements of a popular presentation, Dr. Goodwin had left America. He had explained that he was still too shaken, too depressed, to be able to recall experiences that must inevitably carry with them freshened memories of those whom he loved so well and from whom, he felt, he was separated in all probability forever. I had understood that he had gone to some remote part of Asia to pursue certain botanical studies, and it was therefore with the liveliest surprise and interest that I received a summons from the President of the Association to meet Dr. Goodwin at a designated place and hour. Through my close study of the Moon Pool papers I had formed a mental image of their writer. I had read, too, those volumes of botanical research which have set him high above all other American scientists in this field, gleaning from their curious mingling of extremely technical observations and minutely accurate but extraordinarily poetic descriptions, hints to amplify my picture of him. It gratified me to find I had drawn a pretty good one. The man to whom the President of the Association introduced me was sturdy, well-knit, a little under average height. He had a broad but rather low forehead that reminded me somewhat of the late electrical wizard Steinmetz. Under level black brows shone eyes of clear hazel, kindly, shrewd, a little wistful, lightly humorous; the eyes both of a doer and a dreamer. Not more than forty I judged him to be. A close-trimmed, pointed beard did not hide the firm chin and the clean-cut mouth. His hair was thick and black and oddly sprinkled with white; small streaks and dots of gleaming silver that shone with a curiously metallic luster. His right arm was closely bound to his breast. His manner as he greeted me was tinged with shyness. He extended his left hand in greeting, and as I clasped the fingers I was struck by their peculiar, pronounced, yet pleasant warmth; a sensation, indeed, curiously electric. The Association's President forced him gently back into his chair. "Dr. Goodwin," he said, turning to me, "is not entirely recovered as yet from certain consequences of his adventures. He will explain to you later what these are. In the meantime, Mr. Merritt, will you read this?"

The Metal Monster, by Abraham Merritt

Review Actually, [The Metal Monster] contains the most remarkable presentation of the utterly alien and non-human that I have ever seen. -- H. P. Lovecraft, letter to James F. Morton, 6 March 1934 [Selected Letters IV, p. 390]It’s vintage stuff, for die-hard enthusiasts... you’ll applaud Hippocampus... Add it to your shelf of Golden Age classics. -- MeViews by Lisa DuMondThe Hippocampus edition presents it in as complete a form as possible... a highly imaginative, pioneering science romance... -- Sci-Fi Dimensions, August 2002 (Reviewed by John C. Snider)The Hippocampus version reprints the original 1920 serial edition, the one Lovecraft read. Read it... -- Lost Civilizations Uncovered, June 2002 (Reviewed by Jason Colavito)

About the Author A. Merritt was a major influence on H. P. Lovecraft and Richard Shaver, and highly esteemed by his friend and frequent collaborator Hannes Bok, by then a noted SF illustrator. Michael Moorcock and James Cawthorn list The Ship of Ishtar and Dwellers in the Mirage as two of the novels in their book Fantasy:the 100 Best Books, describing the former book as Merritt "at the peak of his powers", and Merritt's work as a whole being full of "memorable images". Gary Gygax, creator of the game Dungeons and Dragons, listed Merritt in "Appendix N" of the Dungeon Masters Guide and often noted that he was one of his favorite fantasy authors. In the Lensman series by E.E. Smith, there is a reference to the novel "Dwellers in the Mirage" in which the protagonist Kimball Kinnison references the book and a quotation from it "Luka--turn your wheel so I need not slay this woman!"

In this great crucible of life we call the world - in the vaster one we call the universe - the mysteries lie close packed, uncountable as grains of sand on ocean's shores. They thread, gigantic, the star-flung spaces; they creep, atomic, beneath the microscope's peering eye. They walk beside us, unseen and unheard, calling out to us, asking why we are deaf to their crying, blind to their wonder.

MERRITT By s.ferber Abraham Merritt's second novel, "The Metal Monster," first saw the light of day in 1920, in "Argosy" magazine. It was not until 1946 that this masterful fantasy creation was printed in book form. In a way, this work is a continuation of Merritt's first novel, "The Moon Pool" (1919), as it is a narrative of America's foremost botanist, Dr. Walter T. Goodwin, narrator of that earlier adventure as well. As Goodwin tells us, he initially set out on this second great adventure to forget the terrible incidents of the first; if anything, however, the events depicted in "The Metal Monster" are at least as mindblowing as those in the earlier tale. While Goodwin had encountered underground civilizations, frogmen, battling priestesses and a living-light entity in the earlier tale, this time around he discovers, in the Trans-Himalayan wastes of Tibet, a surviving Persian city, a half-human priestess, AND an entire civilization made up of living, metallic, geometric forms; an entire city of sentient cubes, globes and tetrahedrons, capable of joining together and forming colossal shapes, and wielding death rays and other armaments of destruction. As in the earlier tale, Goodwin is joined in his epic adventure by a small group of can-do individuals that he meets in the most unlikely, godforsaken areas of the world. This time around, it's a brother-and-sister team of scientists, as well as the son of one of Goodwin's old science buddies. The sense of awe and wonder so crucial to good adventure fantasy is of a very high order in this book. Goodwin & Co., in one of the book's best set pieces, explore the living city of metal, and witness the life forms feeding off the sun, reproducing, and preparing for war. Later on, Merrittt treats us to a titanic battle between the metal folk and the lost Persians, as well as an hallucinatory cataclysm at the novel's end. Indeed, much of the book IS hallucinatory, with the metal shapes coalescing and morphing like crazy Transformers gone wild. A book by A. Merritt would be nothing without his hyperstylized, lush purple prose, and in this tale, his gift for somewhat prolix prose is given full vent. At times these incessant descriptions wear a bit thin, and at others they paradoxically fail to stir up pictures in the reader's mind eye. (I defy anyone, for example, to say that he/she was able to fully visualize Goodwin & Co.'s initial nighttime entry into the city of the metal people.) For the most part, though, these descriptions are amazing. Just take this one small sample. Whereas other writers might simply say that Goodwin entered a chamber with multicolored lights, here's what Merritt gives us: "...a limitless temple of light. High up in it, strewn manifold, danced and shone soft orbs like tender suns. No pale gilt luminaries of frozen rays were these. Effulgent, jubilant, they flamed--orbs red as wine of rubies that Djinns of Al Shiraz press from his enchanted vineyards of jewels; twin orbs rose white as breasts of pampered Babylonian maids; orbs of pulsing opalescences and orbs of the murmuring green of bursting buds of spring, crocused orbs and orbs of royal coral; suns that throbbed with singing rays of wedded rose and pearl and of sapphires and topazes amorous; orbs born of cool virginal dawns and of imperial sunsets and orbs that were the tuliped fruit of mating rainbows of fire...." Almost like prose poetry, isn't it? With writing like this, a well-thought-out plot, exotic settings and some great action sequences, "The Metal Monster" does indeed live up to its rep as a fantasy classic. There ARE some unanswered questions by the book's end, but that only adds to the aura of cosmic mystery that Merritt has built up. The book is a winner, indeed.

Curtis 5.5" x 8.5" softcover book. 237 pages.Of great important to readers of weird fiction is the first installment in Hippocampus Press' Lovecraft's Library series. Aimed at reprinting texts that H. P. Lovecraft read and admired, the inclusion of Abraham Merritt's The Metal Monster should come as a shock to no one.Set in the Trans-Himalayan mountains, a group of four explorers uncover a lost-race, their power-crazed leader Norhala, and the metal homunculus Norhala controls. More akin to the writings of Edgar Rice Burroughs and H. Rider Haggard than to Lovecraft, Merritt's concept of writing a "nexus where scientific theory and occult mystery intersected" seems philosophically aligned with Lovecraft's own aesthetic of the weird. Readers will surely notice certain similarities between Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness and The Metal Monster.Though The Metal Monster should feel dated, it surprisingly seems as innovative and fresh today as it must have upon first publication. The lesson learned, it would seem, is that a great author is able to create works that transcend time.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. "It's Alive!" By Paul Camp Abraham Merritt's _The Metal Monster_ (_Argosy_, 1920; 1946) is a sequel of sorts to _The Moon Pool_ (1919). The narrator of the earlier novel returns, and damned if he doesn't end up in another lost world, this time in the Trans- Himalayan mountains. _Monster_ doesn't have quite the color or dazzle of _Pool_, but I believe that it deserves a bit of attention because it is the most _science fictional_ of Merritt's lost world novels. Most of Merritt's novels-- _The Moon Pool_(1919), _The Face in the Abyss_ (1931), _Dwellers in the Mirage_ (1932), _The Ship of Ishtar_ (1949)-- are unabashed fantasies. But the creature in _The Metal Monster_ could be explained in scientific rather than mythical terms. The monster in question is a kind of hive-mind: cubes, spheres, pyramids, and tetrahedrons of metal "given volition, movement, cognition-- thinking" (37). These molecules of metal can assemble into bridges, fighting machines, flying cars, X-ray machines, robots, and a mechanical serpent. The human scientists captured by the creature certainly attempt to explain it in scientific terms:"If Jaques Loeb is right, that action of iron molecules is every bit as conscious a movement as the least and the greatest of our own... the iron does meet Haeckel's three three tests-- it can receive a stimulus, it does react to a stimulus and it retains memory of it" (108).Our heroes admit that the creature's intelligence is a bit harder to explain, but that it nevertheless exists. And it has other characteristics of living organisms: "[The crystals of metal] bud-- give birth, in fact-- to smaller ones, which increase until they reach the size of the preceeding generation" (110-111). There is even a suggestion that the metal monster reached our planet by traveling through space like a cluster of spores. Certainly it has long range plans to wipe out the competitive race of man. The monster of _The Moon Pool_ was defeated largely by old magic. The monster of _The Metal Monster_ has an Achilles heel, but the arrow that slays it is more scientific than magical in nature. But the novel is not purely science fictional. There are, almost in tension, barbarion warriors, traitorous eunuchs, and Norhala. Norhala is technically a priestess for the iron Emperor. But in practice, she is a goddess. She is beautiful, with fiery red hair. And I think that it is fair to say that she is neither deceptive nor evil. But she is imperious, powerful, and demanding. She has no real understanding of human feelings or foibles, she expects total obedience, and she is capable of ruthless vengeance. This leads to some bloody fights and spectacular battles.Hugo Gernsback reprinted _The Metal Monster_ in 1927 in _Science and Invention_ under the title _The Metal Emperor_. Gernsback being Gernsback, he probably told himself that the value of the story was the "science" in it that would educate American youth, turning them into little technocrats. Most of Gernsback's readers knew better.Perhaps a few words should be said about Merritt's attitude toward _The Metal Monster_: He was not happy with it (Moskowitz, 1963). But that dissatisfaction caused him to do several rewrites, and so in some ways it is a little better crafted than several of his other novels.Reference: Moskowitz, Sam (1963). "The Marvelous A. Merritt". In _Explorers of the Infinite: Shapers of Science Fiction_. Westport, Conn: Hyperion P, 1963.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. great book with a good assortment By shyne This is a great book with a good assortment of interesting and delicious food. It goes into how the diet works, what foods you can eat on the diet, and how to stay motivated during the diet and I found it to be very effective. It is quite challenging that it requires a lot of discipline, but it is well worth the effort. It is also easy to read and follow. So if you are looking for a proven diet system that does not starve you, definitely check out this book!

I don't usually read those so much in a cook book, but it's filled with all kinds of very useful lists, information and some basics to get things rolling. The other thing I really like is how they have keyed the recipes to tell you if they are high, medium or low on the keto part of it and having the nutrition also in percent is awesome. For a first timer like me, these tools really make my meal planning easier.Ketogenic cooking is not for the weak, that is for sure. It has really pulled me into more cooking that I ever thought I would be doing, but I have really enjoyed every recipe I have tried in it so far and having a place to use good quality ingredients and feel good about it in the end is fantastic. So right next to my Paleo cookbooks this one is being used on conjunction. Great food for great health.

This book provides another effective method to apply this diet in your lifestyle. It provides a good resource for your food with its efficient recipes. I also love how it shorten the explanation at the beginning about the diet, but still provides the description so that everyone can understand what is inside the book. Then, what unique about this book is its guide for precautionary measures in internalizing this diet. I love how it acknowledges the fact that there are risks in taking this diet, since every diet has its own risks.
