"[...] The ultimate truth of our personality is that we are no mere biologists or geometricians; "we are the dreamers of dreams, we are the music-makers." This dreaming or music-making is not a function of the lotus-eaters, it is the creative impulse which makes songs not only with words and tunes, lines and colours, but with stones and metals, with ideas and men: With wonderful deathless ditties We build up the world's great cities, And out of a fabulous story We fashion an empire's glory. I have been told by a scholar friend of mine that by constant practice in logic he has weakened his natural instinct of faith. The reason is, faith is the spectator in us which finds the meaning of the drama from the unity of the performance; but logic lures[...]".

An Indian Celebration of English Literature By THREEKAY A literary extravaganza from Rabindranath Tagore - the one and only English literature Nobel laureate, from India. His extensive knowledge on every subject with regard to the spiritual and physical aspects of nature and man, which according to him, exist for the sole purpose of creation rather than production is the idea behind this wonderful book. His literary meaning to some of the great poems by Keats, Wordsworth and Shelley in conjunction with God’s creative unity of nature’s own beauties, are to be well noted. His emphasis on poetry and literary art skills of our ancestors in paving the way for a harmonious existence with nature’s beauty and God’s love is well brought out by the author. The author’s rich knowledge about the importance of birth, childhood, adulthood, womanhood, and old age with respect to their inherent strengths, weaknesses and their synchronization with nature’s own creative ability is the main objective of the author. The influence of Western education on the Eastern value system and its detrimental effects on the thinking capacities of the students of the East can never be better explained. Finally, the need to create a versatile World University to receive and impart education from both the hemispheres and its ability to create learners and teachers that can constructively unify the different varieties of creative thinking into a single unified strength for the benefit of the world citizens is called upon.A rich celebration of classic literature and the heights of English word experience, in this book. Hats off to the vision and knowledge of this great author from India, who has taken the pride of his country, to every shore of this world. One must read this book to experience the joy of English literature in context to God’s creation and the purpose of its unification with man’s learning.Speaking about the darker part of this work, the author has very cleverly put forward his hatred towards Western culture and Christianity. Simultaneously he took care in praising its roots of becoming the basis of empowering the West with useful knowledge and creative abilities, probably to avoid the wrath of the British who were ruling India at that time.My rating is 3.25 out of 5

"Bread" by Treuille and Ferrigno and "My Bread" by Lahey. others exist.this book has almost no recipes. that (aside from annoying me on page 12) is its major weakness. the above mentioned "Bread" has photos, recipes and instruction and is a better book in my opinion, but as a beginning instruction book this is worthwhile if you don't already own another and don't require recipes. the photos are excellent, the prose is usually clear and most of his suggestions for equipment are good.so, to anyone still reading, what did he annoy me with on page 12 to cause me to write a picky critical review of a basically good book? he states that anyone who doesn't believe that a scale is the most important piece of equipment is a fool. well, good bread has been being baked for hundreds of years without scales. i don't use one. why? the majority of older recipes do not give the ingredients in weights. also, he is wrong about the most important single piece of equipment. it is the oven. i challenge him to a bake off where we each get a single piece of equipment. he gets a scale. i get an oven. i win.summary. good book, but he annoyed me. most people will find my complaints petty. Treuille and Ferrigno's "Bread" is better, mainly for the recipes.

The author could have used tenth of the text pages to cover what he was talking about - it is far too winded, the directions should have been short and to the point (if the author's initial promises were to be kept), instead of woffling on about irrelevant details, thus losing the reader at the very start. The letters are far too big, the book design is of filler type (make everything big so that there are more pages printed), the pictures are off colour and of amater-like quality, all of this giving the whole book impression of a rushed job. I give it one star for the good original concept and promise.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Technical By Weiner Very technical with some long tangents, but in the end, the photos and descriptions helped me to put out a much better bread product at home. Only 4 recipes in this book, so it is really a book to learn techniques in how to make a good loaf of of bread.

The final installment of Churchill's ambitious four-volume history

The fourth and last volume in Churchill's famous account spans from 1815 to 1901. It closes when the British Empire is at its peak, with a staggering one-fifth of the human race presided over by the longest reigning monarch in British history: Queen Victoria.

In America, he assesses the position of the "Great Republic" from slavery and secession to its position as a world superpower. He charts the rise of Germany and the unification of Italy and examines the situation in the Balkans in 1878, all of which had a deep impact not only on the war he was soon to fight, but on the geography of the European continent today.

55 of 56 people found the following review helpful. The History of the English as seen by Winston By Richard C. Geschke During the 1930's Winston Churchill was enduring his "wilderness years" and was quite prolific in his journalistic efforts. Mr. Churchill began this rather ambitious effort of the history of the English Speaking Peoples in 1937. This four volume effort wasn't published until the years of 1956-1958. You see Winston had to serve England as Prime Minister from 1939 to 1945. After that he had to write his Nobel Prize winning 6 volume compilation of World War II. During this time Sir Winston was the leader of the Conservative opposition party from 1945 to 1951. After that he again served as Prime Minister until 1955. Mr. Churchill didn't finish this history of the English Speaking Peoples until he was in his early 80's. One thing about Mr. Churchill, he didn't let any grass grow under his feet. As a great writer and historian, Mr. Churchill has always had a bias of the English language, laws and its history. Being the master of the English written word, it seems quite right that it was he to write this historical sketch of the English people. Winston goes into great depth of the birth of England and its subsequent development including all the detailed trials and tribulations. He details the narrative of the monarchy into the development of a Democratic form of government. The rather long history is divided into four books as follows: 1.) The Birth of Britain 2.) The New World 3.) The Age of Revolution 4.) The Great Democracies Churchill expounds of the development and governance of the British Empire. He also details much of American history, especially the minutiae of the Civil War. The writing is clear and concise. I think it rather remarkable that these volumes are still relevant today. I took delight in reading Mr. Churchill's last great historical writing. Here's to you Winston. Hear! Hear!!

35 of 36 people found the following review helpful. A Must Read Set By Edward J. Barton After completing the four volume set of Churchill's History of the English Speaking Peoples, I was struck by not only how easy and interesting the writing was to pour through, but just how diverse, rich and relatively obscure the general knowledge of our history is. The series takes the reader from the raids by the Romans about 250 BCE to the end of the Boer Wars and the cusp of the First World War in 1905 (which, Churchill would dispute - as he calls out the war with France in the 1740-50 time frame as the first truly world war). Exploring the emergence of constitutional monarchy, the English language and laws, modern political thought, the Reformation, and more than a few deeper dives into military campaigns ranging from Caesar to Nelson to Robert E. Lee and Baden-Powell. Churchill's ability to convey 2000 years of history as "his story" and allow it to be a tale rather than an academic history commend this to a broad range of readers. Surprisingly light, this isn't a quick read, but certainly is approachable by almost any reader with interest. A must read.

33 of 34 people found the following review helpful. Nobel Prize Winner By J. T. Regenhardt If you were short changed on your history education, like most of us, this is a must read. This is the kind of reading the can make the casual reader, an avid reader of histories. Most people don't know that Churchill had to write to earn a living. Along with his works on the Duke of Marlborough, The World Crisis (WWI) and his 6 volume work on WWII, this series stands out. I covers a lot of ground and leaves you wanting to read more.

The neighbourhood of Bloomsbury Square towards four o'clock of a November afternoon is not so crowded as to secure to the stranger, of appearance anything out of the common, immunity from observation. Tibb's boy, screaming at the top of his voice that she was his honey, stopped suddenly, stepped backwards on to the toes of a voluble young lady wheeling a perambulator, and remained deaf, apparently, to the somewhat personal remarks of the voluble young lady. Not until he had reached the next corner—and then more as a soliloquy than as information to the street—did Tibb's boy recover sufficient interest in his own affairs to remark that he was her bee. The voluble young lady herself, following some half-a-dozen yards behind, forgot her wrongs in contemplation of the stranger's back. There was this that was peculiar about the stranger's back: that instead of being flat it presented a decided curve. "It ain't a 'ump, and it don't look like kervitcher of the spine," observed the voluble young lady to herself. "Blimy if I don't believe 'e's taking 'ome 'is washing up his back."

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Sentimental, perhaps, but charming nonetheless By P. Mann In this charming short story, a stranger arrives at a boarding house in England, where the inhabitants and the landlady all have a variety of character flaws, from the penurious landlady to the vain 39-year-old woman trying to pass for much younger to the husband and wife who bicker constantly to the young woman determined on jilting her love in favor of someone with money. Around the stranger, however, they begin to act strangely, showing consideration for others."Passing of the Third Floor Back" (the title refers to the stranger's room at the boarding house) is one of my all-time favorite short stories, right up there with "The Story of an Hour," "One Ordinary Day with Peanuts," "The Open Window," "Popular Girls" (by Karen Shepard), "A Wagner Matinee," and several others. The writing is typical of Jerome K. Jerome's work--carefully crafted and often quite funny. This story, which was later made into a film, may be suitable for any age, but the prose is sometimes difficult to get through and requires a certain assuredness of the reader. The reward more than justifies the effort.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Unique story line By Caroline Feeman Very different from the other books I have read by Jerome k Jerome. The creative storyline and the underlying meaning makes it a pleasure to read. .. ...of course!!!

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Entertaining By Heather Caroline I went on a Jerome Jerome kick and decided to read everything he wrote, in no particular order. I don't recommend this practice, because after a few you realize that it's all a blur! And now I have trouble distinguishing this title from the rest. But I can say that they are all clever, witty and outdated in a fun way (learn something about "olden" times - and that people and their cares have been the same for centuries). As the author ages his circumstances change (marriage, kids, etc.), so it would have helped to know their chronological order and follow it before I started the endeavor. It's been a few months (and dozens of books) since I read this, and I don't remember the premise - which may be all you need to know as a recommendation on whether or not to read it :).

I read the book in short segments due to the content. It definitely is not a cliff hanger, but for those who like history it contains interesting insight into a part of history that escapes many readers.

We think of medical science and doctors as focused on treating conditions—whether it’s a cough or an aching back. But the sicknesses and complaints that cause us to seek medical attention actually have deeper origins than the superficial germs and behaviors we regularly fault. In fact, as Jeremy Taylor shows in Body by Darwin, we can trace the roots of many medical conditions through our evolutionary history, revealing what has made us susceptible to certain illnesses and ailments over time and how we can use that knowledge to help us treat or prevent problems in the future.   In Body by Darwin, Taylor examines the evolutionary origins of some of our most common and serious health issues. To begin, he looks at the hygiene hypothesis, which argues that our obsession with anti-bacterial cleanliness, particularly at a young age, may be making us more vulnerable to autoimmune and allergic diseases. He also discusses diseases of the eye, the medical consequences of bipedalism as they relate to all those aches and pains in our backs and knees, the rise of Alzheimer’s disease, and how cancers become so malignant that they kill us despite the toxic chemotherapy we throw at them. Taylor explains why it helps to think about heart disease in relation to the demands of an ever-growing, dense, muscular pump that requires increasing amounts of nutrients, and he discusses how walking upright and giving birth to ever larger babies led to a problematic compromise in the design of the female spine and pelvis.  Throughout, he not only explores the impact of evolution on human form and function, but he integrates science with stories from actual patients and doctors, closely examining the implications for our health.   As Taylor shows, evolutionary medicine allows us think about the human body and its adaptations in a completely new and productive way. By exploring how our body’s performance is shaped by its past, Body by Darwin draws powerful connections between our ancient human history and the future of potential medical advances that can harness this knowledge.

Body by Darwin: How Evolution Shapes Our Health and Transforms Medicine, by Jeremy Taylor

Review “Taylor, a science writer and former BBC producer and director, celebrates the work of Charles Darwin and his successors in this densely packed survey of modern ailments with an evolutionary twist. . . . Taylor covers fascinating territory, and readers willing to wade into its technical aspects will find much to ponder.” (Publishers Weekly)“Drawing on complicated science, interviews, and current research, Taylor describes the body as an evolutionary collection of compromises, leaving the human species susceptible to degeneration and illness. . . . One anthropologist describes evolution as 'a tinker not an engineer.’ Understanding how this tinkerer has molded the body provides greater insight into the ways our health works and fails.”  (Booklist)“There is a wealth of information in Taylor’s book, and . . . those who commit time and thought to Body by Darwin will come away with a new understanding and appreciation of our bodies and how and why they work.” (Washington Independent Review of Books)“Taylor has accomplished the difficult feat of appealing to the general reader in a book aimed also at medical professionals. Doctors really do need to imbibe Darwinism, not just as the explanation for all life but as a message of direct importance to medicine itself.” (Richard Dawkins, author of The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution)“Body by Darwin packages cutting edge science into seven vivid true stories dramatically describing patients and their doctors discovering evolutionary explanations for diseases. More than just the perfect book club book, it advances the field of evolutionary medicine. I will use it in my classes and give copies to my friends.” (Randolph M. Nesse, coauthor of Why We Get Sick: The New Science of Darwinian Medicine)"This is a fantastic book that I found hard to put down. Taylor has tackled some of the primary health concerns for many of us in industrialized nations, including allergies, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and back and knee problems that result from a lifetime of walking on two legs. Each chapter begins with a story of someone who is afflicted with one of these health challenges, drawing attention to real lives in ways that are compelling, and the thoroughness with which each topic is developed sets this book apart from most others that I have read on evolutionary medicine.”  (Wenda Trevathan, author of Ancient Bodies, Modern Lives: How Evolution Has Shaped Women’s Health)“Taylor is often eager to demonstrate that the human body is for the most part a remarkably well-adapted structure. . . . Taylor does a fine job of raising provocative questions and pointing the reader toward the ways in which evolutionary biology has been enhancing medical science.”   (Wall Street Journal)“Body by Darwin attempts to trace the evolutionary history of many common medical issues, including heart disease, miscarriage, dementia, cancer, and back pain, with an eye toward what evolution can tell people about the possible origins of these problems and, ultimately, strategies for treatment.  . . . Taylor succeeds in drawing provocative connections between health and evolution that add an important perspective to how people should think about the theory and practice of modern medicine. Recommended.”   (Choice)

About the Author Jeremy Taylor was previously a senior producer and director for BBC Television, and he has made numerous science films for the Discovery Channel and Learning Channel, among others. He is also the author of Not a Chimp: The Hunt to Find the Genes that Make Us Human. He lives in London.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Evolution or Intelligent Design--A thoughtful discussion. By Robert Tell This is an incredible book that I can recommend to anyone with an interest in why our bodies do the things they do. Most of what we hear and read conceptualizes our bodies as machines that can be kept repaired and running in the same way we maintain our cars. The evolutionary perspective, according to Jeremy Taylor, is only interested in maximizing our reproductive fitness. How do these two perspectives differ when focused on specific diseases and organ systems? For the answers, the book's chapters discuss allergies and autoimmune disease, infertility and diseases of pregnancy, orthopedic illness, blindness, cancer, cardiology, and dementia, and together go a long way to reveal the folly (in my biased opinion) of creationism. An important read for the layman as well as the professional. (Full disclosure, I am quoted in the chapter on cancer.)

If you leave the mouth of the Thames, or the white chalk cliffs at Dover, and sail over the water just where the English Channel meets the North Sea, you will in about three or four hours see before you a long expanse of yellow sand, and rising behind it a low ridge of sandhills, which look in the distance like a range of baby mountains. These sandhills are called "dunes." Here and there at intervals you will see a number of little towns, each town standing by itself on the shore, and separated from its neighbour by a row of dunes and a stretch of sand.

Spike Lee’s film Bamboozled, released in 2000 to controversy and mixed reviews, follows a frustrated black TV producer on his quest to create a show so offensive it will get him fired. The result is a modern-day minstrel show that, contrary to expectations, becomes a massive hit. A satire of race, media, celebrity, and American history, Bamboozled has conventionally been regarded as one of Lee’s lesser efforts, though it now appears to be one of his most prescient and radical. In this reappraisal of the film for its 15th anniversary, film critic Ashley Clark makes the case for Bamboozled as one of Lee’s most rich and enduring works, and as one of the most important satires of American culture in this young century.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. a critical companion for a tricky film By Amazon Customer "Bamboozled" is a difficult film to watch, to put it mildly. A bourgeois black TV exec (Damon Wayans) pitches a show to his black-appropriating boss (Michael Rappaport) called "The New Millienium Minstrelsy Show." It features black actors blacking up and shucking and jiving (Savion Glover and Tommy Davidson, with the Roots as their backing band), and its surreal, satirical success can only lead to a tragic ending for the film's black characters. It's a 'feel-bad' film, and is largely dismissed as one of Spike Lee's 'interesting failures.' But Clark's close-reading of the film argues that it is prescient and still relevant to black representation in the media today. (Think of "The Help," "12 Years a Slave," and "Precious," to name a few.) I think his book is challenging yet readable, and is immensely helpful for anyone who has seen the film, or is interested in black satire.

The History of the Kings of Britain was originally published under the Latin title, Historia Regum Britanniae, by Anglo-Saxon monk, Geoffrey of Monmouth. The chronicle is famous as the original source of the legend of Sir Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, as well as the Prophecies of Merlin. The chronicle is also the original source of “King Leir,” from which Shakespeare adapted his famous play by the same name.

The chronicle recounts the origins of Britain from the time of Brutus and the Roman conquest of the British Isles. It is a semi-fantastical account of the origin of the British Kings and contains a storehouse of British history, fantasy and legend. An indispensable piece to any student, or admirer, of the history of the British Isles.

Do I really need another biscuit/ sweet/ cake/ crisp? Ask yourself the question next time you dive for the biscuit tin. Many of us fall easily into patterns of "mindless" eating. We pick at food while working at our computers, we reach for the quickest - and usually the unhealthiest - snacks for a quick energy boost, we don't take proper lunch breaks, we are constantly distracted while we eat. We have lost a lot of the enjoyment of eating and as a result we are guilty of just "shoveling" food into our bodies. Mindful eating applies the principles of mindfulness to our everyday eating habits. Becoming mindful of what we are eating allows us to become more aware of the whole experience of eating, and helps us to appreciate and savour our food. By eating mindfully we can also break negative habits such as overeating. It also helps us to avoid the pitfalls of yo-yo dieting, and so enables us to lose weight and keep it off for good. This book shows how we can use mindfulness to aid weight loss by really listening to our body. Filled with practical exercises and delicious recipes, Mindful Eating will set you on the path to a new and healthier way of eating.
