The latest Scandinavian publishing phenomenon is not a Stieg Larsson–like thriller; it’s a book about chopping, stacking, and burning wood that has sold more than 200,000 copies in Norway and Sweden and has been a fixture on the bestseller lists there for more than a year. Norwegian Wood provides useful advice on the rustic hows and whys of taking care of your heating needs, but it’s also a thoughtful attempt to understand man’s age-old predilection for stacking wood and passion for open fires. An intriguing window into the exoticism of Scandinavian culture, the book also features enough inherently interesting facts and anecdotes and inspired prose to make it universally appealing. The U.S. edition is a fully updated version of the Norwegian original, and includes an appendix of U.S.-based resources and contacts.

Then I liked it so much I never gave it to him, and kept it for myself. Now I have to buy another, but I will gladly do it. This book is amazing. It is hardcover and the binding felt solid, I like the feel of the paper in the book. It's weird, but books with poor quality paper can just ruin it for me. The book discusses the Norwegian way of "dealing with" wood. I waited (I think) 2 years for it to be translated in English as I knew it would be the perfect gift. But it is just so damn interesting I couldn't let it go. There are many full colored pictures of wood, and even more words about wood. It's a book that is entirely about wood. I don't know how else to describe it. You'll probably like it. Buy 2; one for you, one for the most outdoorsy wood chopping obsessed person you know.Disclaimer: if you DON'T like woodsy stuff, you probably shouldn't buy this book. Because that is ALL it is about.

Good read, not a how to manual, but still full of useful info By Steven Edholm Being currently immersed in the task of putting up the winter firewood, while also writing blog posts and making youtube videos about splitting firewood, the release of this book was good timing. I've been putting up my own firewood up for a long time, so I have some perspective on the subject. The book is very much written for the Norwegian audience and it's perspective is very much Norwegian/Scandinavian. It is as much a human and cultural interest book revealing a view of the Norwegian relationship with forests, wood, work and heat, as it is a practical book and has feet in both areas. As a very pragmatic person, I would have preferred to see more well laid out how to information. It is not a how-to manual that will show you how to put up firewood. However, it is still full of much of that kind of useful information, especially for those who live in a similar context to that in which the book is framed. This is a well written, well constructed, well researched and easy reading book. I think for anyone who lives in a Northern forest of birch and conifers would be glad they read this book. In fact, I'd say it's a must read. Also, anyone who is just a wood burning/cutting/splitting enthusiasts, as some of us are, would enjoy it and almost surely learn something new. Even as a fairly well seasoned wood geek, I learned some neat stuff. It also has a romantic aspect that will pluck the pragmatic heart strings of many firewood enthusiasts. You can see a more thorough review on my website, skillcult.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. I'm very pleased with this book By Been there before I'm very pleased with this book. The author is a strong advocate of heating with wood and the activities that precede and surround the actual burning. As much as anything, I guess I'm impressed by the Norwegian awareness and appreciation of the importance of wood heat in their history and their current society. Promoting clean and efficient use of firewood for heating homes seems to be a national policy of energy independence and emergency preparedness. New homes are required by law to have an alternate source of heat that is not electricity dependent - and that is usually wood heat. A pile of firewood doesn't disappear when a blizzard brings down the power lines, it doesn't leak pollution when the fuel tank springs a leak, and the firewood will sit there unattended and useful for a very long time. The author covers a wide variety of associated topics in a clear and enjoyable style. Additionally, the book is illustrated with beautiful photos and is well bound and produced - it is as substantial as some of the woodpiles it discusses. It doesn't go into details about sharpening a chainsaw or ax but anyone interested in heating with wood will probably enjoy this book.

What have Barack Obama, Queen Elizabeth II and the Three Little Pigs got in common? They are all characters in this hilarious horror/political satire. You will never look at President Obama the same way again, after reading about his embarrassing, (but very funny), secret. There have been many conspiracy theories about the origins and ancestry of Barack Obama. Some are just plain ridiculous. Perhaps the real Obama story is being revealed here? It can scarcely be more far-fetched than some of the origins of Barack myths and, if the comments of the many amused readers are anything to go by, a lot more entertaining.

Meade Since this book has been accumulating five star reviews on Amazon.com for several years, I consider it appropriate to repost a few of them here.By Chris on August 3, 2015Format: Kindle Edition Verified PurchaseAnother reader who found Christopher via his FB page here, and I can only say I'm happy I stumbled across him and his wacky sense of humor! It's refreshing to see somebody with an obvious talent for writing turn to the dark side and use said talent solely to make people laugh. I'd love to be able to say that I read this book in one sitting, but that would be a lie. Unfortunately that annoying thing called "life" interrupted my single sitting attempt twice. If you like a good laugh, and would like to see an attempted assassination on Obama by a flaking zombie, then this is the place to find it.Satire Writ LargeBy Betsy Ashton on July 26, 2015Format: Kindle Edition Verified PurchaseI have no idea where to begin this review. I rarely laugh out loud, but Christopher Meade's revealing of the truth as he sees it behind some of the most perplexing current conspiracy theories made me wipe my eyes. I've loved satire from the time I first read "A Modest Proposal" and realized Jonathan Swift shouldn't be taken literally.Meade presents the reader with a zombie, a cat that actually likes the zombie, a different cat that lives at 10 Downing Street, Barack Obama, Queen Elizabeth II, Adolph Hitler, Osama Bin Laden and the Three Little Pigs in a mash up that absolutely works. Finally, we learn the truth behind Obama's heritage. I think we do.This slim volume packs more irony, humor and improbable relationships into fewer than 100 pages than any fiction writer I've read. At least I think he's written fiction.Read it. Enjoy it. Laugh out loud. Think. You won't be disappointed.By Viv Drewa on October 2, 2014Format: Kindle Edition VerifiedI had no idea this novel by Christopher Anthony Meade was going to be so hilarious!I couldn't imagine a zombie, cat and Barack Obama, and several other entities could be woven into such a magnificent and entertaining novel.Meade starts out with the amazing relationship with a zombie (Faversham) and a writer (Anton). Faversham becomes the smelly, molting house guest to Anton who allows him to stay because of how beautifully he plays the piano. Anton doesn't worry about becoming Faversham's next meal as he is a member of ZA (Zombies Anonymous), but falls off the wagon. This is just one of the hilarious stories Meade shares with the reader. The Cheshire cat, three little pigs, Adolph Hitler all tie in together marvelously.I will definitely be highly recommending Meades' novel and look forward to many more.5.0 out of 5 starsThe Obama Conspiracy Revealed?By Amazon Customer on January 20, 2014Format: Kindle EditionThe Zombie, The Cat and Barack Obama by Christopher Antony Meade is a rollicking piece of absurdist literature that showcases the zany wit of the author as well as lampoons the world of supermarket tabloids and conspiracy theories that have gone viral in our modern culture. Have you ever wondered what the real cause of global warming was? Do you know the true origins of the Illuminati? Were you aware of the secret link between Obama and Osama? Meade will have you as illuminated as Calvin (as in Calvin and Hobbes) after one of his father-and-son discussions about the real ‘real-world’. You’ll be shaking your head and counting your marbles after thoroughly enjoying Meade’s world view. The novella opens with the shaky alliance of Anton and Faversham and their struggles in dealing with Faversham’s struggle with his addiction to unusual gastronomics. It is the intrusion upon the therapy sessions by Mr. Gutterskunk that leads to an unfortunate backslide by Faversham, resulting in an investigation led by Sergeant Goosling. The officer next falls afoul of the recalcitrant Julian, which leads to a fast-forward to Area 51 in Lincoln County, Nevada. If you don’t know where this is going, well, all the more reason to buy the book.History scholars do well to remember the theory of Adolf Hitler (who is one of the main topics of the satire) is saying that people are more likely to accept the big lie than a small one. This may well be the strength of the tabloid publisher and conspiracy theorist. Having the fish story debunked is much like the cops coming along and overturning the soapbox of the three-card monte dealer on the street corner. The only ones truly upset are those who paid to play. The big winners are the cops who had the pleasure of turning over the soapbox. Ask Christopher Antony Meade, or better yet, buy a copy of The Zombie, The Cat and Barack Obama to see how it’s done.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great, but not good to the last drop..... By Richard Subber I love this story, but I confess that I stopped reading at p. 390. So, don't worry about spoilers....I've always maintained a coldly mechanical willingness to stop reading a book whenever the time comes....in St. Ives, the time comes at Chapter XXXI.Stevenson died after writing XXX chapters of St. Ives, and a respected contemporary, Sir Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch, wrote the remaining VI chapters from Stevenson's notes.Stevenson's oeuvre is fastidiously lush, precise, sophisticated, with deeply contextual character development and dialogue that leaves me breathless with anticipation for more. There's an abstractly beautiful love interest. Did I mention that I'm a fan of 19th century prose?Quiller-Couch doubtless had his merits as a 19th century writer. He ain't no Stevenson.Q-C's contribution to St. Ives lacks the prepossessing heartiness of Stevenson's dialogue and storyline.Q-C can't quite gin up the panache and persiflage that RLS animates on nearly every page.Q-C makes a too sincere but unavailing effort to match the rural patois that Stevenson offers for the reader's delight.Q-C bungles the parlous adventures of the eponymous protagonist, injecting a wretched slapstick element that leads an RLS fan to transition uncomfortably into pursed-lips mode.Stevenson's prosaic mastery is, sadly, missing in the last VI chapters of St. Ives, and, therefore, ignorance shall be my penalty for closing this truncated masterpiece before I reached the end.Read more on my blog: Barley Literate

By George R Peabody Very disappointed that the final chapter of the book seemed to be missing leaving the reader to wonder how the story of St. Ives ended. Great adventure story up until then. Research found that it was completed by another lesser known author.

As I dug into my memory for those snacks or tiffin, I recalled the many anecdotes and narratives about the people and places associated with these recipes, My replies grew into lengthy stories and my girls loved them. 'Amma, send us more recipes for tiffin,' they wrote, Those stories were rambling and multifaceted and they are all here in my book. 'Tiffin', derived from 'tiffing', a historical British term for small meals or snacks to accompany a drink, is a staple meal in most Indian households. A popular television chef on the local Arlington cable network, Rukmini Srinivas or 'Rukka', regularly whips up mouth-watering delicious tiffin for her viewers with an ease and prowess befitting a seasoned epicure. In this delightful memoir-cum-cookbook, Rukka shares the memories and recipes of delectable food that she has cooked and eaten over many decades. Having travelled extensively- from Poona, Madras and Delhi to Berkeley, Stanford and Boston- she realized, at a very young age, the indispensability of authentic home-cooked food. She records here her emotional and deeply personal bond with food- from Chitappa's masala vadai and Appa's vegetable cutlet to bondas on Marina Beach, Narayana's bajji and Amma's Mysore pak. Alongside, she shares stories from her childhood in British Poona, of making vegetable cutlets with a Victorian meat grinder, college days in the Madras of a newly independent India, cooking for author R.K. Narayan and her travels around the world with her husband, the renowned social anthropologist, M.N. Srinivas. Like the traditional metal tiffin box, which has found its way into modern food, Rukka's pure-vegetarian recipes are an interesting amalgamation of old-school cooking techniques, with innovative twists. Including charming anecdotes and over a hundred easy-to-follow delicious recipes accompanied by evocative photographs, Tiffin is a richly satisfying feast for all those who believe in food, family and friendship.

Ancient questions about the causes and nature of pleasure were revived in the eighteenth century with a new consideration of its ethical and political significance. Rowan Boyson reminds us that philosophers of the Enlightenment, unlike modern thinkers, often represented pleasure as shared rather than selfish, and she focuses particularly on this approach to the philosophy and theory of pleasure. Through close reading of Enlightenment and Romantic texts, in particular the poetry and prose of William Wordsworth, Boyson elaborates on this central theme. Covering a wide range of texts by philosophers, theorists and creative writers from over the centuries, she presents a strong defence of the Enlightenment ideal of pleasure, drawing out its rich political, as well as intellectual and aesthetic, implications.

Wordsworth and the Enlightenment Idea of Pleasure (Cambridge Studies in Romanticism), by Dr Rowan Boyson

Review "... persuasively argues that theories of pleasure in the eighteenth century have been mischaracterized as conservative, normative, and stultifying ... A timely study of an important concept that offers a much needed account of the strange and heretofore somewhat baffling insistence in Wordsworth's work on the importance of pleasure." European Romantic Review"This study brilliantly examines the modern misreading of Enlightenment pleasure, reframing it as as communal, collective and joyous (rather than private, solipsistic and disinterested). Boyson excels at engaging the reader with an argument that is at once historical, political and philosophical, but that skillfully holds on to the literary and aesthetic ... There is no doubt that Wordsworth and the Enlightenment Idea of Pleasure offers a significant argument that I hope will both influence Wordsworth studies and open up the positive experiences his poetry offers for further critical attention. The study might even be considered as part of the 'eudaimonic turn' that currently seeks to rescue joy, ecstasy, wonder and happiness from those critics who dismiss it as ideology or neurosis in their weary roles as the defenders of literary criticism's negativity bias." Emma Mason, BARS Bulletin and Review"... challenging, capacious [and] conceptually rich ... at once a critique and an astute extension of Wordsworth's philosophical and aesthetic commitments." Michael Pickard, Studies in Romanticism

About the Author Rowan Boyson is a Research Fellow at King's College, Cambridge. She has published review-essays in New Formations and Literature Compass and is a member of the British Association of Romantic Studies.

By INVLizzy Darcy's father (a nonchalant fellow who is obsessed with grandkids) is still alive and pressures him (contrary to character) to marry or be disinherited. Though his father's standard (literally) is that it cannot be an actress or someone's mistress our hero still struggles over choosing Lizzy. The rest of the angst isn't all that dramatic because it resolves too quickly. The writing was better than some but not in the Austen style. It's another short story, not a full novel. If not for Kindle Unlimited I would steer clear for the price on these. Kudos to the author for giving us a stand alone story and not this new trend of making us wait for a sequel though.

By ArkansasAustenFan We finally meet Darcy's father and I liked his character very much. The parenting roles are reversed in this "what-if" and it was a fresh change. The late Mrs. Ann Darcy was the stoic one with much concern for thoughts of the ton. Knowing William Darcy to be much like his mother, George Darcy was determined to force his son to seriously search for a wife. William had used his cousin Anne as an excuse for five years and it was time to get on with the program. George wanted to see his grand children. I like the way George Darcy dealt with Wickham too. Elizabeth was facing much the same situation. Mr. Collins had come to collect a wife and Mrs. Bennett was determined that one of her daughters would be mistress of Longbourn when Mr. Bennett died. Jane appeared to have Charles Bingley, so she was off the market. It looked like Lizzy would be the one he settled on. Jane and Lizzy coaxed Mrs. Bennett into a season in London with the Gardiners before Collins was allowed to propose. So the race is on, Darcy and Elizabeth both have ultimatums and to London they go. How nice our Darcy and Lizzy had a chance meeting on a muddy road two miles from Longbourn before their "final season" in London had even started. But did this meeting leave them with good impressions of each other?Thank goodness for George Darcy's trip to London before the season was over.

The premise was very interesting: what if Darcy's father was still alive and chomping at the bit for grandchildren, and what if Elizabeth was a few short months away from betrothal to Mr. Collins? This variation was true to the characters, but added some traits I think we all imagine (or hope) are there anyway - a bit of backbone in both Jane and Bingley, and a little more logic in the face of dislike from Elizabeth. If you're a JAFF fan who loves a well-written variation (with a HEA, of course!), I highly recommend this!

"Meanwhile we stick here ... and like it!" "Maybe you can like it, but I don't," young Farmer growled, and glared at the window glass. "This blasted rain!" Dave snapped his book closed, and tossed it on a nearby table. "Check!" he grunted. "It seems to be letting up a little, though, so let's do something about it. A little of it may do us some good. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Charming, Elegant, Authentic By Pop Bop Thomas Bailey Aldrich was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1836. Family circumstances forced a move when Aldrich was a child, but some years later he returned to Portsmouth to prepare for college. "The Story of a Bad Boy", the book for which Aldrich is best remembered, is the semi-autobiographical novel that reflects this period in his life. It was written, (in 1870), while Aldrich was an editor for Ticknor and Fields, just before he became the editor of Atlantic Monthly. "The Story of a Bad Boy" preceded "Tom Sawyer" by several years, is widely considered the first authentic American boyhood novel, and was credited as an inspiration by Mark Twain. A more rueful, but elegant, tribute to his native Portsmouth capped Aldrich's career in 1893 in "An Old Town By the Sea". While Aldrich had placed some romances and humorous fictions in Portsmouth, this book marked a frank and slightly melancholy memoir of lost Portsmouth days Since this is was a Kindle freebie I was tempted to revisit the book, although I did not expect it to have aged well. But guess what? This book remains engaging, vital and accessible. Aldrich had a refined but generous and open style that rewards the reader with clear muscular prose flavored by a sort of old fashioned elegance that enriches rather than obstructs the story. Aldrich had a well developed poetic sensibility, and that is reflected in this prose work. It is a satisfying, if mild, read for an adult and might even be a refreshing read for a younger audience. The style is not particularly challenging, but rather is elegant without being convoluted or overly ornamented. So, well worth a look, and if the prose style and the mellowness charm you, so much the better.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. appreciating george ade By mad at I pod The first thing you have to tackle with this book is the title, since these stories are not fables and there is little "slang". Ade was not a fantasist. These are very short, realistic, and sometimes very funny stories. He called them fables because they all have a moral, but the moral is ironic, meant to underline the hypocracy and narrow vision of small town mid-west America in the turn of the Century (19th-20th Century). By slang he meant these are stories in the vernacular, written in a conversational tone. Ade was a Drieser in miniature, and one of our best humorists, and his fans included Edmund Wilson and fellow Hoosier Jean Shephard (another underappreciated humorist, remembered for the film The Christmas Story).

It's weird mostly because it's SOOOOO dated that it's hard to understand it.It is composed of many fables (that you've never heard) written in slang... But it's slang from THEN, not now. A lot of the "slang" has become common language now, so it doesn't seem like slang at all. However, some of the slang is so unusual that it's hard to figure out what Mr. Ade is talking about.I love this book. I bought it for about [price] in an antique shop many years ago and have loved it ever since. There is one fable called The Fool Killer (or something to that effect... I don't have it here in front of me) that really resonates with me. It pokes fun of people who make themselves miserable in order to endure a day of "fun".If you're the type of person who likes to collect weird old books, this is the book for you.

Song Note: I downloaded this free from the Gutenberg Project rather than Amazon, so there may be a few differences between this version and the one I have. This was written in 1899 and the English has not been updated. Once you get used to the style though, the stories become amusing. They seem more like accounts of people learning life's lessons rather than fables. Some are funny, some are sad and a few I didn't get. As I read them, I realize even though much has changed between 1899 and today, people are much the same. Many of us make the same dumb mistakes as our ancestors did: trusting those we shouldn't, expecting too much or too little, etc. The illustrations are also cool.

"[...]saddleless horse in search of Peter Mall. When he returned, the big, kindly man came with him, and in Martin's arms there squealed and wriggled a shoat. "A smart boy you've got, Jacob," chuckled Peter, jovially, after the first heart-warming greetings. "See that critter! Blame me if Martin, here, didn't speak right up and ask me to lend 'er to you!" And he collapsed into gargantuan laughter. "I promised when she'd growed up and brought pigs, we'd give him back two for one," Martin hastily explained. "That's what he said," nodded Peter, carefully switching his navy plug to the opposite cheek before settling down to reply, "and sez I, 'Why, Martin, what d'ye want o' that there shoat? You ain't got nothin' to keep her on!' 'If I can borrow the pig,' sez he, 'I reckon I can borrow the feed somewheres.' God knows, he'll find that ain't so plentiful, but he's got the right idea. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A forgotten gem of American literary regionalism By Karl Janssen Emanuel Haldeman-Julius is best known as the publisher of the Little Blue Books, popular inexpensive paperbacks on a variety of subjects that sold hundreds of millions of copies. For several years he was also the editor of the most prominent socialist newspaper in America, the Appeal to Reason. His wife Marcet Haldeman-Julius was his partner in business as well as family matters. Though best know for their publishing company, headquartered in the little town of Girard in southeast Kansas, the two were also writers, as evidenced by their jointly authored novel Dust, published in 1921. Dust is set in the fictional town of Fallon, Kansas, a surrogate for Girard. From the title and its setting, I was expecting a hard-scrabble agricultural epic, perhaps a farmer fighting for his family’s survival against a pitiless soil and unforgiving climate. There’s definitely a little of that here, but mostly Dust is a novel about marriage. And judging by the marriage from hell depicted in this book, the Haldeman-Juliuses must have had one complicated union. When Martin Wade was a young man, he came to Kansas from Ohio with his parents and siblings. They picked out a patch of unwelcoming dirt and called it their own. Through years of struggle and toil the family built a farm from this dust. A lot of time passes in chapter one, and soon Martin is a grown man and master of his agricultural domain. His farm is one of the most respected operations in the county, yet Martin feels like it’s missing one important element, a wife. He soon convinces Rose Conroy to fill the position. Martin is an active but stern man with an atheistic and materialistic view of life. He willingly does the work of several men because he recognizes that work is the most effective distraction from the pointlessness and hardship of life. Rose’s outlook on life is not so harshly constructed. She believes in traditional virtues like love, happiness, and beauty, while all Martin believes in is stock, feed, and dollars. Once united in marriage, Rose feels more like a servant in Martin’s household than a wife. Like any bride, she longs to be loved, or at least appreciated. Instead, she finds herself a prisoner to his unrelenting and emotionless devotion to toil.Though the setting and subject matter may be similar to writings by Hamlin Garland or Willa Cather, stylistically Dust has more in common with the blunt and brutal naturalism of Frank Norris’s novel McTeague. The language is plain and straightforward, not in a pedestrian way but in an insightfully precise descriptive manner devoid of superfluous flourishes. The psychology of the characters is intricate and authentic. They unapologetically behave the way real human beings would behave, regardless of fictional conventions or the desires and expectations of the reader. There’s not a lot of sentimental nostalgia for the good ol’ farming life in this book. In fact, it may be one of the more depressing novels you’ll ever read, but it’s certainly never boring. The reader becomes riveted to the characters’ plight, and it’s never clear what’s going to happen next. In its own way, the book is rather inspirational for its depiction of how not to live your life. It really compels the reader to consider the relative importance of work, family, money, and love in his or her own life.As a transplanted Kansans, the Haldeman-Juliuses are sort of local heroes of mine, for the little Parnassus of the Plains they established in Girard. I knew they were both writers, but I had no idea they could write this well. Dust may be largely forgotten today, but it deserves to be remembered alongside the works of Garland, Cather, Norris, and other great American realists of the early 20th century.

P. PalmerEdition reviewed; Haldeman-Julius, E. & M. (n.d.) Dust. Girard, Kansas: Haldeman-Julius Publications. The reason for reading this novel by Emmanuel and Marcet Haldeman-Julius is that I have become interested in the scientific content of the little blue books, which were published and printed by the Haldeman-Julius's at their printing press in Girard, Kansas. Their life and work has become of interest to me."Dust" is a gritty novel, and a depressing read. It runs to 251 pages in this edition, in a large print using a small format page, so is not lengthy, but the plot takes in three generations of struggle of the Wade family on a Kansas farm. Emanuel and Marcet ran a farm in Girard, Kansas, so the feel for the life of a farming family is there and I suspect that the detail of the fictitious Wades is in fact fairly true to life. The characters are drawn boldly and we see their views about and understanding of life made clear and explicit, yet the characters tend to the two dimensional, rather than fully formed. The obvious struggles are against the dust, the harshness of the lack of money and resources and the hard-bitten characters formed by the interplay of the environment on human nature. There is thus tragedy piled onto tragedy, which is why I claim it to be a depressing read. There is another gender battle going on which I suspect is Marcet's contribution as she had `modern' views on the nature of marriage.Bill Palmer

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. "Dust" By Teresa The opening line did it again. Knowing what this story was about and hearing the title of the first chapter “The Dust is Stirred” was intriguing to me as it takes place on the Kansas Prairie where the tallgrass grows.Three generations survive and thrive on their farm through the ages. This story was somewhat of a surprise with an unexpected twist of fate with Martin and Rose. I would like to think that the earlier pioneers would have been in more of a state of content than the story portrays, although I know times were hard. The story was somewhat sad but worth a listen. My curiosity lead me to look up the authors of this book and I found their story to be really neat as well. I found them listed in the Kansas Historical Society.About the narrator: Lee Ann Howlett told this story the way it was meant to be. The times were hard and people were haggard and worn. She portrayed this perfectly. She added the element that portrayed the lives of the early pioneers as they moved west. Great work!

Best Ebook Four Quartets, by T. S. Eliot

A masterly new recording by Ralph Fiennes. Four Quartets is the culminating achievement of T. S. Eliot's career as a poet.

While containing some of the most musical and unforgettable passages in 20th-century poetry, its four parts, 'Burnt Norton', 'East Coker', 'The Dry Salvages' and 'Little Gidding', present a rigorous meditation on the spiritual, philosophical and personal themes which preoccupied the author.

It was the way in which a private voice was heard to speak for the concerns of an entire generation, in the midst of war and doubt, that confirmed it as an enduring masterpiece.

It is the last substantial poetry he wrote before turning to drama and consists of four poems each with a five-part structure. The work as a whole is concerned with the perception of time, linked with the importance of poetic art and the place of Christianity in deciphering the meaning of one's lifetime. After two quotations from Heraclitus, "Burnt Norton" opens the collection. Here Eliot muses on the idea that all possible outcomes of any event are secretly around us, unseen and unperceived. An empty pool is, in some other reality, filled with water and a blooming lotus. Eliot's metaphysical insight here is reminiscent of quantum theory that was then beginning to become the rage in physics circles. These speculations are tricky and difficult to get one's head around, and even more difficult to plainly put into words, but Eliot manages to succeed."East Coker", named after the town in England from where Eliot's Puritan ancestor emigrated to America, deals with the cyclical nature of time. Here the poet surveys the tendency for all earthly things to rise and ultimately fall. Christianity with its emphasis on eternal life, asserts Eliot, promises a way to change one's end to one's beginning and escape the fall into oblivion that dooms everything."The Dry Salvages", in reference to a place on the New England shore which Eliot visited as a youth, is the weak point of the collection. A rumination with a nautical theme, the poem suffers from meandering phrasing and peculiar wording. Its Marian devotion is inconsistent with the Puritan/Anglican tradition of the rest of FOUR QUARTETS. Most would attack "The Dry Salvages" for its oft-maligned line "I sometimes wonder if this is what Krishna meant", seen by some as overly haugty intellectualism. I think this is unfair, and in fact the section which that line begins is the one bit that redeems the poem. Eliot's Harvard education, where he first became familiar with Eastern thought, was 30 years in the past, but the subject still preoccupied him in this poem."Little Gidding" superbly ends FOUR QUARTETS. It was written in the height of the Blitz, a time of fear and doubt in England, but it counters Hitler's madness with a note of hope and spiritual triumph. Eliot calls back to an earlier conflict, England's Civil War, and seeks any lesson it might teach his generation. "The communication of the dead," he writes, "is tongued with fire beyond the language of the living." As the poem ends, he has acheived inner peace in a time of pandemonium, through the realisation that the pain of the present is escapable by reaching to the past - what poets have done before - and the future - what is still left to be written.FOUR QUARTETS is a complicated and vast work. While not as full of obvious quotations as his earlier, more popular work "The Waste Land", it does work in inspiration and material from Christian thinkers such as St. John of the Cross and Julian of Norwich, and contains many illusions to 17th century England. As a result, the work is incredibly deep and one can find something new with each reading. But FOUR QUARTETS is also an entertaining work for the casual reader. A combination of smooth and engaging sound with the great themes of all time is a remarkable combination. Eliot's greatest work, I'd wholeheartedly recommend it.

The Four Quartets is to me a shining example of a man of deep understanding of God and reality. I have read this poem many times since I first read it back in college. It speaks directly to my soul. There is no passage, no phrase, which does not work for me.I read some sections to my wife when we were first married, and she thought that it was an English translation of the Sikh holy texts."We shall not cease from explorationAnd the end of all our exploringWill be to arrive where we startedAnd know the place for the first time"There is no better explanation of Eastern religion than this. I am eternally grateful for this work.

It is so full of real life, as it is. In grasping for words to describe what cannot be described by words, T.S.Eliot has written a masterpiece that will endure for as long as there are people to read books. Each reading takes you inside, yet out of time a space. If I could pick the most meaningful book I have ever encountered, this would be it... the one you take to that desert island; the one you take with you through your life. Don't analyze this book, let it reach out to you, allow it to become an old friend, and it will enrich your life.

This pulls out all the stops with desserts (some of which I’d never heard of) main courses, and SOUPS! It’s so hard to find vegan dessert recipes so I was automatically excited. I love split peas, and this book has at least 3 recipes dedicated to using them. I especially love the rice and split-pea soup, it is so filling and super tasty. The scalloped peaches are to die for, and this book taught me to use corn starch as a thickener in places that I've never even known were possible! Don’t hesitate to pick this one up!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. wonderful By T. Johnson I knew that vegan fajitas were possible, but I haven’t yet come across a really tasty recipe for them until I stumbled on this book. Fajitas were my FAVORITE before my diet change and now I can have them again without any weird additives. The gumbo is especially good as well and the recipe didn’t call for making it too spicy. The apple date butter is so good on mangoes and peaches. I’m really hoping there will be a second edition with even more soups and desserts included!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Slow Cooker Heaven By Ashley McCann I love slow cooking and even though I am not a strict vegan I do like to eat this way often. Gordon explains the ingredients vegans can and cannot eat. He describes the benefits of slow cooking and then does a run down of different slow cookers - describing the differences of shape and also the sizes you will need to feed for example 3-4 people. The recipes are easy to prepare - no silly ingredients that you wont be able to find easily!

It may easily be that, during the many years which have come and gone since the eventful time of my childhood, Memory has played tricks upon me to the prejudice of Truth. I am indeed admonished of this by study of my son, for whose children in turn this tale is indited, and who is now able to remember many incidents of his youth--chiefly beatings and like parental cruelties--which I know very well never happened at all. He is good enough to forgive me these mythical stripes and bufferings, but he nurses their memory with ostentatious and increasingly succinct recollection, whereas for my own part, and for his mother's, our enduring fear was lest we had spoiled him through weak fondness. By good fortune the reverse has been true. He is grown into a man of whom any parents might be proud--tall, well-featured, strong, tolerably learned, honorable, and of influence among his fellows. His affection for us, too, is very great. Yet in the fashion of this new generation, which speaks without waiting to be addressed, and does not scruple to instruct on all subjects its elders, he will have it that he feared me when a lad--and with cause! If fancy can so distort impressions within such short span, it does not become me to be too set about events which come back slowly through the mist and darkness of nearly threescore years.
