From the National Book Award finalist Lauren Redniss, author of Radioactive, comes a dazzling fusion of storytelling, visual art, and reportage that grapples with weather in all its dimensions: its danger and its beauty, why it happens and what it means.WINNER OF THE PEN/E. O. WILSON LITERARY SCIENCE WRITING AWARD • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE, KIRKUS REVIEWS, AND SHELF AWARENESS Weather is the very air we breathe—it shapes our daily lives and alters the course of history. In Thunder & Lightning, Lauren Redniss tells the story of weather and humankind through the ages. This wide-ranging work roams from the driest desert on earth to a frigid island in the Arctic, from the Biblical flood to the defeat of the Spanish Armada. Redniss visits the headquarters of the National Weather Service, recounts top-secret rainmaking operations during the Vietnam War, and examines the economic impact of disasters like Hurricane Katrina. Drawing on extensive research and countless interviews, she examines our own day and age, from our most personal decisions—Do I need an umbrella today?—to the awesome challenges we face with global climate change. Redniss produced each element of Thunder & Lightning: the text, the artwork, the covers, and every page in between. She created many of the images using the antiquated printmaking technique copper plate photogravure etching. She even designed the book’s typeface. The result is a book unlike any other: a spellbinding combination of storytelling, art, and science. Praise for Thunder & Lightning “[An] aesthetically charged and deeply researched account . . . a wild rainstorm of a book, pelting the reader with ideas and inspiration.”—Nature “A gorgeous and illuminating illustrated study of weather in all its tempestuous variety . . . Redniss’s combo of fact, folklore, and vibrant etched copperplate prints enthralls.”—O: The Oprah Magazine “Eerily beautiful . . . Contains plenty of scientific explanation (including more than a few nods toward global warming), but also far-flung personal stories that illuminate the beauty, wonder and chaos inherent in the elements.”—The New York Times “Magical . . . Redniss has . . . shown us how human beings live with nature—fighting, coexisting, taming, predicting via leech barometer and radar and intuition.”—The New York Times Book Review “[A] twenty-first-century genius . . . Redniss is inventing a new literary genre. . . . The reader willing to put herself fully in Redniss’s hands will be rewarded with a delicious feeling of being enveloped by a phenomenon that eclipses the chiming trivialities of daily life.”—Elle “Lends a graphic-novel-like allure to some of nature’s most curious paradoxes.”—Vogue“Redniss is one of the most creative science writers of our time—her combination of beautiful artwork, reporting, and poetic prose brings science to life in ways that words alone simply cannot.”—Rebecca Skloot “Redniss combines her own dual punch of expressive art and impressive erudition to give an entirely new take on all that happens above our heads. This is an illuminated book that is also an illuminating one.”—Adam Gopnik “A strange and wonderful thing, the work of a first-class mind that refuses to submit to any categories or precedent.”—Dave Eggers “Beautiful and totally original.”—Elizabeth Kolbert

Thunder & Lightning: Weather Past, Present, Future, by Lauren Redniss

Review “[An] aesthetically charged and deeply researched account . . . a wild rainstorm of a book, pelting the reader with ideas and inspiration.”—Nature   “A gorgeous and illuminating illustrated study of weather in all its tempestuous variety . . . [Lauren] Redniss’s combo of fact, folklore, and vibrant etched copperplate prints enthralls.”—O: The Oprah Magazine   “Eerily beautiful . . . If weather is our favorite default conversational subject, [Redniss] takes anything but a default approach. Thunder & Lightning contains plenty of scientific explanation (including more than a few nods toward global warming), but also far-flung personal stories that illuminate the beauty, wonder and chaos inherent in the elements.”—The New York Times   “Magical . . . Redniss has . . . shown us how human beings live with nature—fighting, coexisting, taming, predicting via leech barometer and radar and intuition. . . . She is, to use a contemporary word, a curator: arranging information with a distinct aesthetic and a point of view.”—The New York Times Book Review   “[A] twenty-first-century genius . . . Lauren Redniss is inventing a new literary genre. The artist brings her intrepid reporting and sharp intelligence to subjects as wide-ranging as Marie Curie, gay soldiers in WWII, and now stormy weather. . . . [Redniss is] a reporter, a painter, a social historian, a biographer, and a feminist who creates stories and tableaux that are published as books, which are at once sexual and prim, grotesque and romantic, scientific and soft. . . . The reader willing to put herself fully in Redniss’s hands will be rewarded with a delicious feeling of being enveloped by a phenomenon that eclipses the chiming trivialities of daily life.”—Elle   “From Superstorm Sandy to the California drought, weather is a constant presence in our lives, shaping the way we think, feel—and vote. Lauren Redniss’s latest, Thunder & Lightning: Weather Past, Present, Future, takes a deep dive into human efforts to grapple with the elements, with forays into mythology, commerce and politics. Combining etchings and text—the National Book Award–nominated author and artist designed her own font for the book—Thunder & Lightning lends a graphic-novel-like allure to some of nature’s most curious paradoxes.”—Vogue“Lauren Redniss is one of the most creative science writers of our time—her combination of beautiful artwork, reporting, and poetic prose brings science to life in ways that words alone simply cannot. Thunder & Lighting is a fascinating meditation on how climate affects the earth’s landscape and the lives inhabiting it, but also how the landscape of a book—the layout of its text, the images on its pages—impacts the telling of a story. This is an important book about a topic that couldn’t be more important to us all.”—Rebecca Skloot   “In Thunder & Lightning, Lauren Redniss combines her own dual punch of expressive art and impressive erudition to give an entirely new take on all that happens above our heads. This is an illuminated book that is also an illuminating one.”—Adam Gopnik   “Lauren Redniss’s Thunder & Lightning is such a strange and wonderful thing, the work of a first-class mind that refuses to submit to any categories or precedent. It’s the way you wish science would always be taught—with a mix of stories and facts, legend and hard science.”—Dave Eggers   “Beautiful and totally original.”—Elizabeth Kolbert

It's fantastic, but it's certainly not for everyone. This book is filled with art, both in the graphical illustrations that fill every page, as well as the way the stories and facts pertaining to weather have been presented. The layout itself is beautiful. I loved reading all of the stories and tidbits about weather, presented from a variety of disciplines and perspectives. No, this book is not a novel, and doesn't read like one. Yes, it's a bit abstract. That's part of its beauty. Yes, there is nudity in several of the illustrations. No, it's not [even remotely] pornographic, and I'd have no problem with children of any age looking through this book.Again, this book is not for everyone. But if you like the art, and might enjoy reading interesting history about global weather events and related cultural and other things that you would likely never come across otherwise, give the book a chance. I found reading through it to be a beautiful experience.

I was expecting it to be more science-y and less story-telling-y. It's a lot more about how we FEEL about the weather and events associated with the weather, and how people EXPERIENCE the weather than an Explanation of weather per se. (And I was expecting more of the latter.)So, if you take this as a work of art-science or science-art that immerses in the phenomenon of weather and explores it with you and shows you some things you didn't know -- if you're ready for that -- it's remarkable and wonderful. There are 12 Chapters here, on Chaos, Cold, Rain, Fog, Wind, Heat, Sky, Dominion, War, Profit, Pleasure, and Forecasting, and several pages of footnotes/references at the end. It's not quite a coffeetable book, in that it's fun to flip through the pictures, but they're tied to the stories... I think one might want to nestle in and read a story at a time as the best way to enjoy this book.

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Curious, Poetic, Beautiful By emmejay I loved Redniss's previous book, Radioactive, a history of Marie Curie and of radiation itself, told via historical, scientific and personal vignettes in an original handwritten-like font and hundreds of original illustrations evocative of the mystery and magic of radiation.Redniss's new book changes the topic to weather but continues the beautiful format and presentation, with a similar font that's much easier to read and artwork that is positively ... atmospheric :) There is the disorienting blindness of fog, captured in an extended series of gray-toned pages with minimal anchoring text. There is a section on "meteorological warfare," where clouds are seeded to induce disruptive rain. There is forecasting, from medieval almanacs to the 1792 debut of the Old Farmer's Almanac with its "secret forecasting formula."I'm fascinated by wind and enjoyed the section on trade winds, including when they meet near the equator and create the "doldrums" (a void; a still, windless zone) and also where they flow unobstructed, as swimmer Diana Nyad noted when she and her trainer once chatted with a sailor while waiting for favorable weather conditions between Cuba and Florida:"[She took us] out on the dock in Key West, on the Atlantic Ocean side, and she said, 'Put your tongue out in the air.' So the three of us are standing there with our tongues hanging out in the breeze. And she said, 'What do you sense?' We definitely sensed something grainy, crunchy, you know, in the mouth. And we said, 'Wow, it's the salt.' She said, 'No. It is the Sahara dust.' Literally grains of sand from the Sahara Desert."I enjoyed Thunder & Lightning slightly less than Radioactive; its content feels born of a folder-full of stories about people, events and topics related (sometimes peripherally) to weather, accumulated over years, more than a real exploration of the topic. But it's curious. Poetic. Beautiful. A satisfying experience.

Recipes For Love, With Impossible Ingredients By Steve Thomas I normally would quibble over the formatting of the cookbook, but the reciipes are all novel, and interesting-sounding.I haven't scratched the surface in trying them, because I cannot find the ingredients, but if she changed the ingredients, that would cgange the food. What can you use to substitute for bread or for butter if you're wanting bread-and-butter? Nothing; you end up with cornbread and butter, or bread and jam. Still, I plan on trying some of these recipes, substituting what I can get, for what is called for. There was a show where Lucy offered Dean Martin a martini, only she was out of both gin and vermouth so she subsatitutes other liquors. Dean made an *awful* face. I shall be prepared to grimace - but I don't think so. I won't get what the recipe intends, butu I bet it will be highly edible.Despite the difficult formatting, this is a *great* cookbook to simply *read* for inspiration.

Wanting to try some of the delicious dishes I ate there, I picked up this cookbook. First I’d like to compliment the author for setting up the book with a table of contents and photos of the dishes. I can’t wait to cook some of these dishes. The first two will be Cerdo De Barcelona, a dish with pork chops and vermicelli. The second one I’ll make is Andalusian Rice Salad.

From the author of The Days of Abandonment comes The Lost Daughter, Elena Ferrante's most compelling and perceptive meditation on womanhood and motherhood yet.

Leda, a middle-aged divorcee, is alone for the first time in years when her daughters leave home to live with their father. Her initial, unexpected sense of liberty turns to ferocious introspection following a seemingly trivial occurrence. Throughout the novel, Ferrante's language is as finely tuned and intense as ever, and she treats her theme with a fierce, candid tenacity.

The girls have recently moved from Italy to Toronto, Canada to live with their father. Leda is well educated and teaches at the university in Florence, Italy. Leda was not upset when her daughters moved away, in fact it was quite the opposite: "When my daughters moved to Toronto, where their father had lived and worked for years, I was embarrassed and amazed to discover that I wasn't upset; rather, I felt light, as if only then had I definitively brought them into the world. For the first time in almost twenty-five years I was not aware of the anxiety of having to take care of them. The house was neat, as if no one lived there, I no longer had the constant bother of shopping and doing the laundry, the woman who for years had helped with the household chores found a better paying job, and I felt no need to replace her."It's summer and since she is feeling happy about her new freedom, Leda decides to rent a beach house for six weeks, on the Ionian coast, near Naples. She packs her books and lesson plans for the coming school year and is planning to relax by lounging on the beach by day.Early on she becomes fascinated by the interactions of an attractive young mother named Nina, and her young daughter, Elena. She also intently watches little Elena's interactions with her doll, which the girl calls by several different names. Several other family members visit the family on the beach as well. One day Leda notices the child by the waters edge, so she returns her to her mother who was lying on the beach blanket and hadn't noticed the child had wandered to the water. Another day when the family leaves the beach for the day, Leda notices that Elena's beloved doll was left buried in the sand. This incident upsets Leda, and suddenly this event, along with the interactions of mother and child, opens a floodgate of memories for Leda of her own days as a young mother. Some of the incidents which she recalls of things she did, and ways she reacted to her own daughters --were cringe-worthy.This brief novella, just 124 pages, is sure to evoke emotions among readers, especially mothers. Narrated in the first person, this deep journey into a mother's psyche, gives the reader plenty to think about. Marriage, motherhood, personal freedom, sacrifice and career fulfillment are some of the conflicting issues that surface in this work.Initially, I thought I might have a problem with the flow of the story due to the translation, but that was not the case. Once I got into the rhythm and into what was going on in Leda's head, I was hooked. I liked this one a lot, and would definitely recommend it.

Bellissimo Bright lights cause dark shadows and this book takes on the light of motherhood and its corresponding darker aspects. It is not a crime thriller where the children--grown and young--are in danger, It is a look into the psychology of a woman who never made peace with the sacrifice required by motherhood, but who needed the experience and her children for sanity. When her daughters left home---this is a very female, womanly book but not girlie--old issues started to crop up. The psychology rings true and the ending is surprising. Although this author has never been seen in public and there are rumors of various famous authors who may be writing under an alias, I will be surprised if a man has written this book. It is an easy read and I plan to read everything by this author.

Brilliant in its honesty and forthright prose style By tintintoo One almost never finds women authors who have the wherewithal to speak honestly about motherhood, the difficult choices women (esp. women intellectuals) face in society, and other issues surrounding female identity in this supposedly "post-feminist" age. I can think of no contemporary American woman writer who is as unsparingly honest and courageous in their writing as Ferrante is in hers.

"[...]he had done so then, so deep had been his grief, and so great the importance of the occasion;5 and he at once informs his friend of the decision of the Bench, and of the ground on which it was based. "If he who declares that he dedicated the ground had not been appointed to that business by the people, nor had been expressly commanded by the people to do it, then that spot of ground can be restored without any breach of religion." Cicero asserts that he was at once congratulated on having gained his cause, the world knowing very well that no such authority had been conferred on Clodius. In the present mood of Rome, all the priests, with the nineteen Consulares, were no doubt willing that Cicero[...]".

The Life of Cicero, by Anthony Trollope

About the Author Anthony Trollope was a Victorian-era English author best known for his satirical novel The Way We Live Now, a criticism of the greed and immorality he witnessed living in London. Trollope was employed as a postal surveyor in Ireland when he began to take up writing as a serious pursuit, publishing four novels on Irish subjects during his years there. In 1851 Trollope was travelling the English countryside for work when was inspired with the plot for The Warden, the first of six novels in what would become his famous The Chronicles of Barsetshire series. Trollope eventually settled in London and over the next thirty years published a prodigious body of work, including Barsetshire novels such as Barchester Towers and Doctor Thorne, as well as numerous other novels and short stories. Trollope died in London 1882 at the age of 67.

Johnson Anthony Trollope is an English writer of the Victorian period most well-known for his unbelievably prolific fiction. So both the reader of Victorian literature and also the classicist may be somewhat surprised to find here a passionate defense of the 1st-century BC orator and statesman Cicero. This is all the more surprising because Trollope wrote at a time when Cicero was under attack, especially from German classicists. In these two volumes, however, Trollope discusses Cicero's speeches, compares Cicero's life to that of contemporary Romans, and decides that Cicero was a great man and a patriot whose reputation should be defended. Although Trollope may be a little over-lenient regarding the orator's famous pride and bombast, his glowing assessment is (ironically) closer to some modern views than that of his contemporaries who lambasted Cicero from their positions as professional classicists. I heartily recommend the set to Trollope enthusiasts and to Cicero partisans, but the average reader of Victorian literature may find the classical dicussions uninteresting, while the average classicist may not be satisfied with Trollope's non-scholarly approach.

"[...]"libertins"; for he has left a series of "Love-Letters" which must almost exactly have suited the taste of those who prepared Discourses on the Tender Passion. He probably had many duels still, for Lebret tells us that he served a hundred times as second—the round number is to be taken as such—and any one acquainted with the epoch, or with the Three Musketeers of Dumas, knows that the seconds fought as well as the principals. Lebret adds, to be sure, that he never had a quarrel on his own account, but we may perhaps take this as a bit of the conscientious "white-washing" which Lebret could not refrain from in speaking of his friend's reputation; for we know enough of his character even from Lebret, and of his life from other sources, to make a gentle peacefulness, so out of keeping with the epoch, somewhat doubtful; and then there was his nose. The Nose is authentic also. It appears in all the portraits, of which there[...]".

A Voyage to the Moon By Steven Davis Suspecting that the moon is just another world like the earth, and that its inhabitants have visited us, the adventurer Cyrano de Bergerac devises not one, but several means of paying a return visit. His first attempt is based on the known fact that dew is attracted to the morning sun. "I attached to myself a number of bottles of dew, and the heat of the sun, which attracted it, drew me so high that I finally emerged above the highest clouds." But this has him headed for the sun, not the moon! He realizes his error and releases enough dew to return to earth. His final attempt, one that is more accident than intention, involves a contraption with rockets attached to it so that they fire in stages before falling away. Cyrano is left drifting through space and heading for a fatal impact with the moon, but he is fortunate enough to come straight down into the Garden of Eden where his landing is softened by the boughs of the Tree of Knowledge. The Garden is tenanted by a handful of prophets who explain to Cyrano how Adam and Eve came to be expelled to the earth. Cyrano is about to learn the greatest mysteries of all, when it is his bad timing to make a rather crude joke involving the Almighty. The prophets don't share his sense of humor, so he is expelled to wander the surface of the moon. The moon people are giants who walk on all fours. Their speech resembles the music of the flute. They take Cyrano to be some sort of monkey, so he is captured and used to entertain passers by. He is rescued finally by a being who is one of the natives of the sun. Sun people don't have bodies in the way can understand, so they animate the bodies of the recently dead of other races. This particular sun man says he has spent much time on earth as a teacher and adviser, most recently with Tommaso Campanella (author of The City of the Sun). He takes Cyrano to the moon's royal palace where he becomes something of a pet of the king's daughter. There he meets a Spaniard named Domingo Gonsales, whose voyage to the moon by swan-power was decribed in Francis Godwin's book The Man in the Moone. Gonsales had returned to the moon because "He had not been able to find a single country where the imagination was free."Cyrano finds the culture of the moon people to be in many ways the opposite of Europe's. They venerate the young, and the father becomes a servant to his son. They do not use money, but pay their bills with poems. They've found that smelling food gives one more nutrition than eating it, and avoids those excretory complications. They honor the body and have made virginity a crime. The higher rank a person holds, the fewer clothes he wears; royalty and sages go about naked. It is a mark of honor to expose one's genitals, and when Cyrano says that in his country men of rank wear swords, they are indignant: “O little man, how insane the nobles of your world must be if they pride themselves on a tool used by executioners, one that is made only to destroy and that is, in the end, the sworn enemy of all that lives. And they hide, on the contrary, a part of the body without which we would not exist, one that is the Prometheus of every animal and tirelessly repairs the weaknesses of nature! How unfortunate a country is where the marks of generation are ignominious and those of annihilation are honorable!" Christianity gets much of the blame for this, as one moon man observes: "I am indeed astounded at how much the religion of your country is against nature and is jealous of all the pleasures of men."If Cyrano de Bergerac is remembered for anything these days, it is for the size of his nose. Moon people also have large noses. They say that "a large nose is a sign on the door of our face that says 'Herein dwells a man who is intelligent, prudent, courteous, affable, noble-minded and generous'." Boys born with a short nose are castrated so there is no chance they can pass on their unfortunate infirmity to another generation.Of the many scientific and technical theories discussed in this novel, it must be noted that Cyrano de Bergerac invented the idea of the audio book and the iPod. Lunar people do not have a written language, but record their books on miniature devices like music boxes. Cyrano was given several of these books, and marveled at how he could "read" without occupying his hands or his eyes. "I attached the books to my ears as pendants and went for a walk in town."Near the end of the novel Cyrano has a debate with a young moon man who is an atheist. Among the moon man's arguments is the observation of God that "if he gave me a mind incapable of comprehending Him, it wouldn't be my fault but His, since he could have given me one capable of doing so.” Cyrano the character defends the faith, but it's fairly obvious from all that has come before that Cyrano the author is more interested in the arguments against God than those in favor.Voyage to the Moon is quite entertaining and inventive. It's obvious from his reference to earlier works that Cyrano de Bergerac sought a place in the growing body of utopian science fiction, though he doesn't offer any radical new social ideas. His novel is a broad satire of religious narrow-mindedness and puritanism, and many of his barbs still hit their mark today.

The characters are wonderful and the storyline is fun and interesting By Lover of Books I'm probably over-generous with ratings, but when I can't wait to get back to a book, I consider it 5-star. RIm o' the World is just such a book. The characters are wonderful and the storyline is fun and interesting. What more can one ask of a book? And being written a good century ago ensures that there is none of the ubiquitous, gratuitous sex or violence of so many of today's books that make this reader, at least, cringe. I've already ordered another of B. M. Bower's books, and can't wait to dig in.

The exotic tale of one man’s unquenchable thirst for power Vathek, the ninth Caliph of the Abassides, took the throne at a young age. He debates the most knowledgeable scholars of the day, jailing them if they disagree with him. He possesses an evil eye that can kill lesser men with a single look. He is proud, and he is powerful. Still, he wants more—more knowledge, more power, more women. When a hideous merchant from India arrives in his court bearing glowing swords, Vathek sees an opportunity to take everything he’s ever wanted. So begins his journey east in search of ultimate sovereignty.  Vathek is a feverish account of debauchery and ambition that has inspired the likes of Lord Byron, H. P. Lovecraft, and Clark Ashton Smith.   This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.

Vathek, by William Beckford

Review

“Sympathetic to Beckford’s odd and yet unexpectedly typical position as a member of the ruling class with progressive attitudes and often rebellious tastes, Graham offers us the first true appreciation of Beckford as a literary innovator, oriental scholar, social visionary, and plain old curious character. The first volume to take Beckford in all his sardonic comedy truly seriously, Graham’s Vathek with The Episodes of Vathek is certain to remain the standard edition of, and commentary on, Beckford for decades to come.” ― Kevin L. Cope, Louisiana State University

“Kenneth W. Graham’s introduction to William beckford’s Vathek with The Episodes is simply packed with information, and includes one of the finest discussions of Oriental Tales I’ve encountered. With its careful editing, its appendices, maps, and bibliography, this new, expanded edition of Vathek is, all in all, superb.” ― Sydney Conger, Western Illinois University

He partakes of everything to extremes in his marvelous palace - food, wine, women, and most importantly, knowledge. His mother Catharis encourages and fosters his love of the dark arts, by which he comes to summon a Giaour, a foul demon. The Giaour promises the voracious Vathek to grant him access to the realm of Eblis and Soliman, where he will command all demonic forces and be privy to enough knowledge to satisfy his curiosity. To this end, Vathek engages in wanton and reckless murders, seductions, and blasphemies against the patient divinity 'Mahomet' and his benificent spirits. One sees in "Vathek" a comparable theme with Montesquieu's "Persian Letters". In both, we have a tyrant, (Montesquieu's Usbek is a domestic tyrant) who abandons, and ultimately relinquishes all capacity to control their dominions or themselves - All for the pursuit of knowledge.Vathek can thus be seen as a critique of the Enlightenment and of enlightened despotism, so much the rage in Europe in the late 18th century. Beckford seems to rail at knowledge being held above respect for a common humanity. Overall a very interesting novel in many respects and aside from Beckford's unnecessary authorial interruptions, a solid read.

38 of 40 people found the following review helpful. Beckford's Soulscape? By Luca Graziuso and Marina Ross The tale of Vathek is undeniably a wonderful oriental fable, where enlightenment ethics are presented and critiqued. If read in conjunction with Samuel Johnson "Rasselas", Montesquieu's Persian Letters and "Arabian Nights" one may be able to better understand the landscape upon which orientalism (a term used by Beckford himself to illuminate the period's infatuation with the orient, not to be confused with Said's) and enlightenment values where divulged. Beckford's tale however speaks of a more prescient sphere where the author's inner struggles and thwarted tragic desultoriness devolves. As with all literature this compact gem stands on her own; however many have tried to extract a moral import and some have even described a mystique of knowledge and a system of ethics with undue fastidiousness. In a more likely scenario we have a wonton fable whimsical and indulgent, crafted as a parody of "orientalism". Knowledge of Beckford's life may serve the reader well but should not hinder her enjoyment. The author's disquietude trumps an increasing distance from the absurd drive and hedonistic tendencies of the protagonist, while we feel a sympathetic kinship laxed the more into the novella we proceed. The author wrote this fable in French and supervised the translation as best he could. The grotesque and the sublime are here married insolubly but tend to find a balance suspended over a void that derides and insinuates the emptiness of a spiritual fantasy in turmoil. The ending paragraphs are singed with a sad glow that seems to recriminate as much as it moralizes: much like a father that punishes a child only to feel remorse over the fact that his own blood cannot enjoy what is most enjoyable. He is not convinced and Beckford created a wonderful fable where much is exposed, but the simplicity, the arrogance and the conviction are to be regaled with the same comic grotesque sprightliness with which he infuses his narrative.A quick fun read that demands little of us, but in degrees can disclose a sensibility we may be dismissive of if we are to package it as a tale where orientalism meets enlightenment values.

24 of 25 people found the following review helpful. An exotic dark fantasy By S. Gustafson Leaving aside the question of whether this book is a 'gothic' novel or not, it is a dark fantasy. It shares with its more conventionally gothic brethren a tale of dark deeds in an exotic setting, where an alien and exciting religion is practised. In the standard Gothic tale, allusions to Roman Catholicism, thought of by respectable Englishmen as a dark, oppressive, and half-pagan faith, were part of the conventional apparatus. Beckford chose instead to imagine the world of Islam, an even more exotic milieu that added some flashes of bright colours to the dark and sorcerous background of his book. His choice of an even more exotic setting allowed him greater freedom in portraying characters who defied social convention and fell into exotic habits of mind.My understanding is that it is a matter of some debate to what extent the English text of -Vathek- is a translation from the French, or an original English composition. I do not have the French text in front of me, but it has been represented to me that Beckford's "original" French is rather like the French of Oscar Wilde's -Salome-, and needed extensive editing to be acceptable to a French readership. At any rate, -Vathek- is a prime example of early dark fantasy. The description, of course, will be richer than you are used to, but Beckford's prose actually seems to move quite quickly. Fans of H. P. Lovecraft or Clark Ashton Smith will find that it is quite easy to slip into. And the tale is indeed a vivid one, right up to the exceptional ending when Vathek and Carathis are damned to the halls of Eblis, their hearts seared with unquenchable fire. This is a good edition of the story, and the notes and maps are helpful.

In the tradition of fishing classics, A Naturalist Goes Fishing combines elements of the triumph between fisher and fish, humor and wit, and a passionate concern for the natural environment.

James McClintock takes us to some of the most breathtaking waters the world has to offer while capturing the drama and serendipity in the beloved sport of fishing. We follow him and his fishing buddies and professional guides, as he fishes off the marshy barrier islands of Louisiana, teeming with life but also ravaged by recent disasters like the Deepwater Horizon spill. We travel to the remote waters of New Zealand's Stewart Island, where the commercial fishing industry is fast disappearing; fish for gigantic Antarctic toothfish through a drilled ice hole at McMurdo Station; and scout for spotted bass on Alabama's Cahaba River, which has the highest diversity of fresh water fish in North America. As we take this global journey, we see how sea level rise, erosion, pollution, water acidification, and overfishing each cause damage.

This strikingly beautiful narrative is a must read for anglers and nature lovers alike.

Not just for those of us who fish By Wood Wren What a wonderful read this one was; although I must admit that certain aspects of this work caused a bit of depression. I have been fortunate in my life so far in that have been in a position to be able to travel and indeed have visited many of the places the author has included in this work and indeed, have also fished.More than a fishing book I say though because the author has addressed many environmental issues that we should all be concerned about. I suppose the impact of what is noted here is enhanced because of the fact that not only is the author a fisherman and a naturalist of the highest level, but he can also write and write well. You live his adventures and feel his observations as you read; as if you were standing by his side. The author treats his primary subject, which is fish, with extremely respect and does not beat his chest and focus on the `trophy aspect,' as so many `fishing books' do. Trophy hunting and fishing is quickly becoming a thing of the past and more and more people are realizing this each day. I am of course not anti-fishing...goodness knows I do enough of it and have done enough of it, but the `trophy' aspect of it, i.e. having a blank eyed dead fish hanging on my wall has never been really all that appealing to me. On the other hand, a couple of freshly caught brook trout fried or baked to perfection...well, that is another story.I have been collecting and reading books in this particular genre for quite some time now as my father did and have over ten feet of shelf space devoted to them. I am glad to be able to add this one. I enjoyed the read, was educated by it and it is a book that I will read again on down the road. Highly recommend this one to all concerned folks and not just fisherman and women.

Each chapter is on a particular fish species, with a fishing story, fish biology, and discussion of threats to fish and the environment they (and we) live in. A great way to learn about many facets of fish and fishing. McClintock writes in a conversational tone; this is not a dry textbook.CH 1 – The Chandeleur Islands: Speckled Seatrout – This actually opens with a redfish fishing story. Then, it moves to speckled sea trout biology, a seatrout fishing story, a discussion of the Chanderleur Islands ecosystem, and sea grass meadows.CH 2 – Manitoba: Lake Trout – Chapter 2 opens with a lake trout fishing story, a look at how drought and climate change are effecting fish habitat in Manitoba (especially the surrounding spruce forest), another fishing trip in the area with various species of fish, and moose.CH 3 – The Cahaba River: Spotted Bass – Starts with a fishing trip in Alabama, info on bass biology, otters, gar, redhorse suckers (a type of fish), and the threats to this area (silt, excessive nutrients).CH 4 – Gulf of Mexico: Yellowfin Tuna – First, McClintock talks about some fishing buddies, then a tuna fishing trip, tuna biology, and the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.CH 5 – Antarctica: Toothfish – Opens with a discussion of why Antarctic fish don’t freeze, ice fishing, the Patagonia toothfish (Chilean sea bass) commercial fishery, another fishing trip using yarn for bait, icefishes (which don’t have hemoglobin in their blood), and ocean acidification.CH 6 – New Zealand: Rainbow Trout – Again, a fishing trip, then the cod fishery collapse, fishing rainbows, and invasive algae.CH 7 – The Bahamas: Bonefish – Dangers when fishing, fishing the Bahamas, encounter with a moray eel, coral reef health, bonefish biology, and a marlin fishing trip.CH 8 – Costa Rica: Tarpon – A fishing trip, tarpon biology, back to fishing, snook (another type of fish), puffer fish toxins, sea turtles and the threats to them.CH 9 – France: Anchovies – Processing anchovies, anchovy biology and the anchovy fishery, the smelt, fishing for smelt, the Monterey sardine fishery, and sardine biology.CH 10 – Fishing For Solutions – A look at a variety of quite different fish related environmental problems and some innovative ways of addressing them.An interesting and entertaining look at fishing and the threats to fish and, therefore, to fishing.

By pixels and bits I was interested in reading this book because there's a chapter on tuna fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, which is in my back yard. There's also a section about the Chandeleur Islands which are a haven for brown pelicans just outside New Orleans. The author is an "internationally recognized marine biologist" and a very engaging story teller to boot. These stories aren't just about the fish that he caught, or even about the ones who gave a good fight and got away to fight another day. Perhaps most importantly, as a scientist he witnesses the damage done to fragile fishing waters by natural disasters, such as Hurricane Katrina, or environmental disasters like the Deep Water Horizon oil spill. Not to mention the damage caused by humans. The scenes he describes are sometimes heart wrenching. He describes the erosive impact that generations of overfishing have on species that are now approaching endangered status. Or worse, like the blue fin tuna that is all but gone from the face of the planet. He also documents those instances where there is work being done to right the environmental wrongs done to so many marine ecosystems. This is a very engaging book written in chapters devoted to specific regions and species. He expresses himself eloquently in layman's terms so it's easy to read without danger that you're going to get bogged down by jargon and ideas that are too sophisticated for the average American. First and foremost, you are aware that this is the voice of a scientific mind - and his messages should be heeded by all of us who love the natural outdoors.Chapters include the following locations and fish species:* Chandeleur Islands - Speckled Seatrout* Manitoba - Lake Trout* The Cahaba River - Spotted Bass* Gulf of Mexico - Yellowfin Tuna* Antarctica - Toothfish* New Zealand - Rainbow Trout* Bahamas - Bonefish* Costa Rica - Tarpon* France - Anchovies* Fishing for SolutionsWhile each chapter is written to be free standing, I highly recommend that you be sure to read the final chapter, Fishing for Solutions. Here you'll find the hope you're seeking about the future of marine life on our fragile planet.

"[...]what was by and by to be a Jurassic world, and that again into what was after a while to be an Eocene world, and so on, until the aspect of the world that we know to-day should noiselessly steal upon us. When once the truth of Lyell's conclusions began to be distinctly realized, their influence upon men's habits of thought and upon the drift of philosophic speculation was profound. The conception of Evolution was irresistibly forced upon men's attention. It was proved beyond question that the world was not created in the form in which we find it to-day, but has gone through many phases, of which the later are very different from the earlier; and it was shown that, so far as the inorganic world is concerned, the changes can be much more satisfactorily explained by a reference to the ceaseless, all-pervading activity of[...]".

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This is not the original 1864 book by Ticknor By Nelson A. Logan I own a copy of the original edition of Ticknor's "Life of William Hickling Prescott". The original edition contained pen and ink illustrations at the head of each chapter. Furthermore, the original edition that I own was typeset using the "long s" and the "short s" so that it takes some conditioning of the mind to read what appears to be "From thefe, and fimilar maffes of manufcript, were felected .." as "From these, and similar masses of manuscript, were selected ..". This reprint edition is definitely a fascimile of a later version for which the type for the entire book had been reset. Apparently this latter version omitted the illustrations that definitely add character to the original 1864 printing.
