A beautiful book, and a window into a life By David Sachs I'd read a lot of Tammy Stone's non-fiction pieces before I read the book, and found her to be a beautiful, lyrical and intelligent writer, which is what led me to buying the book. If you want to just peck at it, as I usually do with books of poetry, Formation is a book that can be picked up at any random page, and you will feel something as you read it. I read it a lot this way, and the haiku section especially feels like a series of self-enclosed, complete works. But to really get the value of the book, you have to read it start to end because it is so personal, and the poems take on so much more depth as you take on more of Stone's life, history and journeys. The book has a direction. You also see a variety that you might not notice otherwise- there are parts that seem so light you're not sure what you felt or imagined after you close the covers and put it away, while others are solid, a poetry of bricks, earth and people. Its a beautiful work, and I would recommend getting the paperback so that you CAN peck at it, at random pages, when you feel like it.I love the haikus, by the way. There are some real gems. My previous exposure to haikus has been very limited, but to me they felt like a fulfillment of the form that I hadn't experienced before.

Stone takes us on an amazing journey through her life and travels. With vivid imagery that sparks the imagination, she brings us along to places we wish we could see. Her style is personal, engaging, and thoughtful, with the ability to create photos in our minds. There is a sensitivity here - a questioning pause, a look over your shoulder that catches a glimpse of what could be. Formation is a wonderful, creative, and inspiring read.

She really captured the spirit of a long and meaningful journey and had me absorbed the whole time. She also brought the colors, sounds and spirit of the East alive through her own unique, searching filter. This is a writer with a story to tell and a fascinating voice to match. I would definitely read more of this author's work!

With a revolutionary new “Climate Battery” design for near-net-zero heating and cooling

By the turn of the nineteenth century, thousands of acres of glass houses surrounded large American cities, becoming a commonplace symbol of the market garden and nursery trades. But the possibilities of the indoor garden to transform our homes and our lives remain largely unrealized.  In this groundbreaking book, Jerome Osentowski, one of North America’s most accomplished permaculture designers, presents a wholly new approach to a very old horticultural subject. In The Forest Garden Greenhouse, he shows how bringing the forest garden indoors is not only possible, but doable on unlikely terrain and in cold climates, using near-net-zero technology. Different from other books on greenhouse design and management, this book advocates for an indoor agriculture using permaculture design concepts―integration, multi-functions, perennials, and polycultures―that take season extension into new and important territory. Osentowski, director and founder of Central Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute (CRMPI), farms at 7,200 feet on a steep, rocky hillside in Colorado, incorporating deep, holistic permaculture design with practical common sense. It is at this site, high on a mountaintop, where Osentowski (along with architect and design partner Michael Thompson) has been designing and building revolutionary greenhouses that utilize passive and active solar technology via what they call the “climate battery”―a subterranean air-circulation system that takes the hot, moist, ambient air from the greenhouse during the day, stores it in the soil, and discharges it at night―that can offer tropical and Mediterranean climates at similarly high altitudes and in cold climates (and everywhere else). Osentowski’s greenhouse designs, which can range from the backyard homesteader to commercial greenhouses, are completely ecological and use a simple design that traps hot and cold air and regulates it for best possible use. The book is part case study of the amazing greenhouses at CRMPI and part how-to primer for anyone interested in a more integrated model for growing food and medicine in a greenhouse. With detailed design drawings, photos, and profiles of successful greenhouse projects on all scales, this inspirational manual will considerably change the conversation about greenhouse design.

The Forest Garden Greenhouse: How to Design and Manage an Indoor Permaculture Oasis, by Jerome Osentowski

Review

Publishers Weekly-

"Osentowski shows how building and maintaining a Mediterranean or tropical greenhouse full of figs, lemons, papayas, and bananas can be both affordable and practical. Drawing on his 30 years of experimentation and teaching in the harsh, dry mountain environment of his Central Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute, he offers lush descriptions of his five greenhouses and in-depth, layered advice on designing and constructing a balmy winter retreat. His method uses a 'climate battery’ consisting of tubes buried underground to collect and hold warm air from the greenhouse, which then recirculate it when the temperature cools, backed up in the coldest days with a pellet or wood stove that can simultaneously heat an attached sauna. Osentowski admits that he prefers a hands-on method of teaching, and his written tours through greenhouses are sometimes hard to follow. Novices may be intimidated by the lack of step-by-step, formulaic instruction. But more experienced gardeners, builders, and tinkerers, and even intrepid beginners willing to carefully observe, compute, and ponder, will find this readable guide jam-packed with enough information and inspiration to help them attempt their own indoor paradises.”

“A grand master of American permaculture, Jerome Osentowski has pioneered school gardens, high-altitude/high-nutrient cropping, bio-islands for organic golf course management, and heritage fruit trees for the mountain West. Of them all, the forest garden greenhouse is the most impressive. A marvel of integration between humans, the built environment, and the natural world, the greenhouse, in a world of climate calamity, will prove indispensable for both home comfort and food production. The Forest Garden Greenhouse surpasses all others on the subject for technical innovation and practical design.”--Peter Bane, author of The Permaculture Handbook: Garden Farming for Town and Country, board member, Permaculture Institute of North America, and former publisher and editor, Permaculture Activist magazine

“In 1997 I had the privilege of visiting Jerome Osentowski’s forest garden in Basalt, Colorado. There is no doubt that Jerome learns from nature with enthusiasm and is one of the few with the capacity to translate his observations into a garden that feeds people―and dreams. The Forest Garden Greenhouse not only makes you wonder how you could achieve forest gardens at home and in your community, but it also makes you take action without delay! There is a sense of urgency that we transform our resource use; with wisdom gained from experience, Jerome shows us how we can do just that.”--Gunter Pauli, author of The Blue Economy

“This revolutionary book captures what Jerome Osentowski has learned in decades of building and tending his high-altitude food forest and extensive permaculture site. Jerome’s climate battery is a brilliant idea deserving a broad audience. It brings greenhouse technology into the twenty-first century using simple, appropriate materials. The Forest Garden Greenhouse clearly and elegantly describes the greenhouse, the garden, and the evolution of Jerome’s deep wisdom and creativity. This is much more than a greenhouse book; it’s a manifesto and guidebook showing how permaculture can help us live regenerative lives.”--Toby Hemenway, author of The Permaculture City and Gaia’s Garden

“Jerome Osentowski is a master of simple, elegantly frugal, eminently practical indoor gardens that can grow lots of almost anything almost anywhere by not treating soil like dirt. His recipe for rich sheet-mulched soil has so far produced 58 passive-solar banana crops (and over 100 other kinds of higher plants including Bornean tropicals) in my own super-insulated passive-solar home near Aspen. Now The Forest Garden Greenhouse lucidly shares Jerome’s deep, versatile, and ever-evolving experience. Read, learn, apply, improve, spread, enjoy!”--Amory B. Lovins, cofounder and chief scientist, Rocky Mountain Institute

“Living in a cold climate is no excuse for not growing your own tropical fruits and year-round vegetables. The Forest Garden Greenhouse teaches how to harvest not just food but year-round temperateness, based on the real-world experience of a seasoned greenhouse designer and manager. After my last visit to Jerome’s greenhouse, I came home to Massachusetts and we built a subtropical greenhouse. Once you read his book, you will want to, too!”--Eric Toensmeier, author of The Carbon Farming Solution and Perennial Vegetables

Review

Booklist-

"As an instructor at Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute in Colorado, which he founded almost 30 years ago, veteran gardener and environmental sustainability expert Osentowski teaches what he embodies in his daily life. His passive solar home hugs the side of a mountain, and the produce from his state-of-the-art, one-acre greenhouse provides most of his income. In this groundbreaking, user-friendly guide, Osentowski employs this same structure as the working model for his cutting-edge indoor growing techniques. A key innovation featured here is a solar heat technology called the climate battery, which uses a network of buried tubes that can keep plants warm and thriving even in the dead of winter. Along with clear instructions on installing a climate battery in existing greenhouses, Osentowski provides seasoned guidance on bed layout and soil techniques, successful companion planting, and cultivating microclimates in and around the greenhouse. His well-written, amply illustrated handbook also contains a wealth of information on permaculture-related growing practices that greenhouse amateurs and professionals will find invaluable.”

About the Author

A forager and permaculturist with roots in rural Nebraska, Jerome Osentowski lives in a passive solar home he built at 7200 feet above Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley. Director and founder of Central Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute and a permaculture designer for thirty years, he has built five greenhouses for himself and scores of others for private clients and public schools in the Rockies and beyond. He makes his living from an intensively cultivated one acre of indoor and outdoor forest garden and plant nursery, which he uses as a backdrop for intensive permaculture and greenhouse design courses. Among his accomplishments is hosting the longest-running Permaculture Design Course in the world, now at twenty-nine years running. Jerome and Michael have also been instrumental in identifying, conserving, and propagating heritage fruit trees that have survived and borne crops for over a century in the harsh environment of the Roaring Fork Valley. Jerome’s explorations of sustainable systems and his travels for development projects have taken him to Baja, Nicaragua, Patagonia, Finland, Australia, and the Caribbean.

By Backcountry Johnny I've built and used high tunnels (unheated), a glass faced insulated greenhouse with wood stove, and single-wall and double wall insulated high tunnels with climate batteries. Largest structure I've built was single wall high tunnel, 8'x30' with 140ft of 3" draintile climate battery, 36" depth. After reading the first 71 pages, ( still reading feverishly ), I've filled a notebook page with single line bullet points of "ah" moments that list improvements and understanding of many details of their performance that I want to further investigate and improve. This is after reading the summary part, not the chapters dedicated to those topics, so it would not surprise me to use the notebook up by the time I'm done with the book, giving me years of new things to try to improve production and lower inputs in accord with permaculture principles outlined in the book.Very accessible, and I think it helps establish common ground in a confusing field for discussing, comparing, and developing hoop and greenhouse structures. I've previously read Elliot Coleman, and "the Solar Greenhouse Handbook", and find the examples and metaphors very accessible. This is the distilled wisdom of a very experienced greenhouse grower and builder, with lots of technical detail to share, but also good at providing a framework for discussing the good and bad qualities of a greenhouse. My only complaint is that it's not quite fair to list the price of a greenhouse of this size (Phoenix) as $7,000 without accounting for the hours to build it, which even at 3 dollars an hour probably represent a bigger investment than the cash. It's also not fair to blame Jerome for the missing pages in a copy of the book - My book is not missing the pages mentioned, though I have not verified the absence of this problem from all pages in the book. I'm certain that a call to the printer of the book would result in a replacement without the printing problem.I'm unaffiliated with CRMPI, have toured the facility, have tested and approve of his methods, and have taken a Permaculture design course elsewhere ( nope, didn't drink his coolaid). His red and purple plums and turkish figs are outrageously good.

Great For Greenhouse Growers By Deborah Cobern Very interesting book with lots of pics and info on how this gentleman made Forest Garden greenhouses in his cold climate. Tells how to do it for yourself. Thoroughly enjoyed it and keep picking it up to re-read parts.

It was lacking is real detail, though some readers will be satisfied with the story and his trek through all this.I'm giving it only '1 star' but I don't hate it. The publishers did a great job of creating more than there really was I think. To me it was more of a "How-not-to..." report, than a how to report. A lot of unnecessary problems and not enough technical detail as many hoped for.Without my less positive comments, I allowed 3 colleagues to read it over the past weeks and only one felt it was worth purchasing. But then after we all discussed it he decided he was also just really more impressed with the way the publishers presented the story and information, more than the actual usable content. Yes, the publication is 'well done', but still missing much.I'm not a negative guy at all, but don't understand why some are so mesmerised to give it a '5 star rating'. I guess you need to fit into a very niche lifestyle to feel this was more than "an interesting read".I guess what we are really saying is that it should probably have been a blog story or magazine article. His work, overall, isn't something most people will want to duplicate. It's just another use of 'geo-air, geo-solar, and other types of earth battery technology', but others have done it more efficiently and with less re-do's... I think most are looking for more technical details.

“Alonzo now once more found himself upon an element that had twice proved destructive to his happiness, but Neptune was propitious, and with gentle breezes wafted him toward his haven of bliss, toward Amaryllis. Alas, when but one day from happiness, a Moorish zebec—” “Janice!” called a voice. The effect on the reader and her listener, both of whom were sitting on the floor, was instantaneous. Each started and sat rigidly intent for a moment; then, as the sound of approaching footsteps became audible, one girl hastily slipped a little volume under the counterpane of the bed, while the other sprang to her feet, and in a hurried, flustered way pretended to be getting something out of a tall wardrobe. Before the one who hid the book had time to rise, a woman of fifty entered the room, and after a glance, cried— “Janice Meredith! How often have I told thee that it is ungenteel for a female to repose on the floor?” “Very often, mommy,” said Janice, rising meekly, meantime casting a quick glance at the bed, to see how far its smoothness had been disturbed.

14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Read By A Customer Janice Meredith is one of my all time favorite books. I read this book over 30 years ago and would love to read it again. It was part of a school assignment. In the 8th grade Johnny Tremaine was a required reading assignment. Our class was given an assignment to read another historical novel also taking place during the American Revolution. The book Janice Meredith was one of the 20 books we could choose from (if we could find it). It was the only book on the list with a female central character and my local library had a copy of the book in their "old books" section. The book begins with Janice and her family at home at the beginning of the Revolution. Janice's father is a troy, which means he was a support of the British. The male central character (whose name escapes me, but I'll refer to as Mark)was an indentured servant working for her father. He and Janice are friends, who eventually fall in love, but there are obstacles in the way. For one thing, he leaves the Meredith's family's service before his indenture period is over in order to join the Revolutionary army. Before he leaves he gives Janice a locket. Inside is a picture of a beautiful woman, who the reader and Janice eventually meet. The book continues with Janice's adventures during the revolution. She meets "Mark" several times throughout the book. Janice also meets many well known historical figures along the way, including George & Martha Washington. "Mark" becomes an officer and is on General Washington's staff.Janice meets the woman, whose picture is in the locket and is jealous. Eventually, she learns who the woman is. At one point Janice and "Mark" are engaged, but the engagement is broken. Janice's father is an active troy and he becomes a prisioner of the Revolutionary Army. Janice asks "Mark" for his help to save her father. He ends up doing something that could get him in serious trouble himself. He never tells Janice. Her father is free, but the engagement is broken. It is Martha & George Washington, who eventually tell Janice what "Mark" did to save her father and at what risk to himself.I rate this book "5 star." As I said it is one of my all time favorite books, which I would love to read again. Even after 30 years I remember the book. This is a book for adults and one that parents can feel comfortable giving to a 13 year old to read.

“Scholars and students alike will turn to Caroline Zilboorg’s edition of H.D.’s Bid Me to Live for an introduction that provides heretofore unavailable insights and annotations that elucidate the book’s countless literary and biblical allusions. A useful, thorough, and eloquent study.”—Michel W. Pharand, author of Bernard Shaw and the French

“Zilboorg's introduction and notes are excellent, thorough, and accurate—the work of an unparalleled expert in the field. This edition makes a major contribution to H.D. and modernist studies.”—Jane Augustine, editor of H.D.’s The Mystery In the riveting and intense Bid Me to Live, H.D. documents her traumatic experiences during WWI on which she blamed a number of personal tragedies, including a stillborn child, the end of her marriage, and her pained relationship with D. H. Lawrence. This critical edition returns the novel to print for the first time in a generation.              Editor Caroline Zilboorg offers invaluable background information and perspectives that facilitate a rich and rewarding reading of a complex novel. Including an introduction that recounts the autobiographical narrative on which the book is based, a biographical key to all the major characters, explanations of textual references, and photographs of all the central figures in the text, this is a powerful resource for understanding and appreciating one of the Imagist author's most accessible novels. H.D. (born Hilda Doolittle, 1886–1961) is an American writer whose work exerted enormous influence on modernist poetry and prose. Caroline Zilboorg is an independent scholar based in France. She is a life member of Clare Hall at Cambridge University and has published a number of books, including Richard Aldington and H.D.: Their Lives in Letters.

Review “Bid Me to Live is [H.D.’s] finest and most moving novel, and Caroline Zilboorg’s elegant new scholarly edition is a timely reminder of why she was acclaimed for her sinuous prose, which wrestles compellingly with the fault lines of gender, sexuality and psychology.”—Women: A Cultural Review“Demonstrates an avant-garde mode of writing about the Great War, depicting the experience of non-combatants. Zilboorg’s excellent critical edition will help introduce this fascinating, much underrated modernist text to a new readership.”—Modern Language Review

Captures the atmosphere of 1917 London from a first hand observer and, more centrally to the writing, the sexual and social opening of bohemian Bloomsbury circle, kind of a precursor to the whole 1960's exploration. At times closer to poetry than traditional prose, she builds a powerful image of characters and place. The inner journey toward a genuine rather than romanticized love is slowly revealed in tender understatement.

Shannon O'Reilly Though I had no idea what I was sending to my kindle, I thought I would take a chance because this book is FREE! I was pleasently surprised by the story- and I enjoyed it thoroughly. It is the tale of a young woman trying to piece together her life and find her father's murderer after suffering from acute memory loss. The reader is drawn in as the character rediscovers her past and the mystery that surrounds her father's death and the nature of his killer. I would highly suggest it - an easy quick read.

It is, I think, a rather unusual book for its times. First of all, it is written from a woman's perspective, by a male author - and he has done a rather good job, in my opinion (with the occasional annoying "after all, I am only a woman" coming from the heroine - but maybe in those days women really felt like that and relied more on the men in their lives to solve problems, conduct businesses and so on). Secondly, the heroine is determined to go against what society in general and her relatives in particular expect and advise her to do; she follows her own lead. Thirdly, the language appears much more modern than what you'd think you would find in a book from 1891. Comparing it to This Freedom, which was written in 1922, I would not instantly be able to tell which is younger. Now to the story: At the age of 18, Una Callingham suffers complete amnesia when she witnesses the murder of her father. Like a baby, she has to re-learn how to speak, think, read and write. Four years later, she is in possession of all her mental faculties again, but still can not remember anything from her life before the murder. People she knew back then are strangers to her, and no matter how often the police have spoken to her, trying to trigger her memory into finding anything that could be a clue to the murderer's identity, she is only left very distressed and frustrated every time.Of course, this wouldn't be much of a story if things were not about to change. A new inspector turns up to talk to Una, handing her a bundle of paper clippings about the event, with photographs and all. Until now, her aunt had been so protective of her that she was never allowed to read what the papers wrote about her and the murder of her father. Now that she comes face to face with some of the facts that had been kept from her, she is determined to take things into her own hands and solve the mystery, knowing that she will never be able to lead a happy, self-determined life if she does not get rid of the mystery overshadowing her entire past.By now, Una is 22 and can legally do as she pleases. There is enough money for her to travel and stay comfortably, and she sets out on her quest all optimistic and hopeful. The clues she keeps finding - both in her own memory and by talking to people who knew her and her father before - lead her as far away from England as Canada. It is there that the circumstances of the murder and the true identity of the murderer are revealed. Some of it ranges from the surprising to the improbable, but it is all well written and kept me in suspense until (nearly) the end.If you look for a good old-fashioned mystery (that is actually not so old-fashioned in some respects) and like free ebooks, I can recommend this one from the kindle shop.

Alberto and Marco's previous books were my 101's into self service BI, but after finishing them, the only resource to go deeper were only available in different online sources. I think this book is definitely a must have for all BI professionals. They are great in explaining even the most difficult concepts, and the material in this book is very much up-to-date with the new Power BI Service and Power BI Desktop. If you are beginner in DAX and BI, it might be too detailed as a starter, the authors even warn you about this, but if you want to become an expert, and want to go down into the details, this is your best resource. If you are a beginner, and especially if you are coming from the business analyst side, start with the other book - Microsoft Excel 2013 Building Data Models with PowerPivot , but buy this one as well, as definitely you will need it.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. a DAX book aimed at taking people from intermediate to expert By Austin K Senseman Wow! I make a good part of my living off of Power Pivot and DAX and it's people like Alberto and Marco that have helped me all along the way - with their blog posts, conference sessions, and books. This book really stands out though. It's a very complete treatment of DAX which is the core language of all the "new" analytical tools that Microsoft has released over the past three years.DAX is a language that, at first glance, looks a lot like Excel and is pretty easy to learn for an advanced Excel user but the language quickly becomes more difficult if you haven't taken the time to understand its foundations - and that's what this book addresses ... in great detail. I've worked full-time with DAX for over three years now and I had lightbulbs going off constantly as I was reading this book. Incredible feeling, thank you.Said another way, there is knowledge in this book that will be hard to appreciate, that you'll miss entirely, unless you've had lots of experience with DAX. Beginners will get something from the book undoubtedly but it's really a book aimed at taking people from intermediate to expert. I agree with other reviewers who have suggested that DAX beginners start with Albert & Marco's other book "Microsoft Excel 2013 Building Data Models with PowerPivot"

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Academic, but not arid By Althea This book was first published in 1980 and it's a good example of a certain modulated tone that signaled a shift in feminist literature during that decade. The heady boldness and empowered sisterhood of the 60's and 70's became less pronounced, giving way to writing that was meant to be taken more seriously in the academic world and thus attempted to be suitably objective and dispassionate. In her introduction to the second edition, which came out in 1986, Christ explained the difficultly of balancing her personal reactions to the works under discussion with the effort to achieve scrupulous scholarship. In my opinion she handled the difficulty well, and her measured approach resulted in essays that are seriously researched and carefully footnoted, while remaining emotionally resonant and deeply considered. The book contains five essays about five specific women writers--Chopin, Atwood, Lessing, Rich, Shange-- and their spiritual journeys as evidenced through their diverse literary characters. The way that the spiritual quest can parallel the social quest is under broad examination. The five specific essays are book-ended by two more general essays concerning women's literature and women in the arts. There is a sort of over-arching theme that is developed throughout: that during a time of crisis in a woman's life she has an initial encounter with Nothingness that can lead toward a mystical awakening. From this awakening, which often involves the Natural world, new and penetrating insights develop. From these insights, women are guided toward finding a new language with which to express themselves, discovering new names for experience and self and new ways to interact with the world. The necessity of this ever-developing language is driven home: Christ rightly insists that without hearing other women's real stories, girls and women are not prepared to articulate their own experiences, nor to value their own struggles, nor to celebrate their own strengths. Given that women are still often undervalued in our society, and still have evolving identity difficulties, Christ's exploration of the awakening process through these examples of honest literature and brave art remains relevant, even 30 years later.Truths that arise out of the depths of a woman's life experience are not necessarily mystical or spiritual in nature, but they can activate personal changes which can lead to transformation of the complete self, including the arenas of political activism and ecological responsibility. Christ says that we need not isolate a spiritual awakening from a social one as these are two aspects of a progression toward wholeness. The spiritual/mystical experience is seen as being interior, ineffable and transient, but it can generate profound insight and lead to a more concerned interaction with the exterior world. The aim of sharing women's hard-won knowledge and experience via stories is to widen the realm of transformative activity, and this book would be a good catalyst for encouraging women--in the college classroom, in reading groups, or individually--to challenge themselves to look beneath the surface, to set about on their own quest for greater awareness, deeper meaning, and a more expansive connection to others and the planet.

A SERIES OF ESSAYS USING WOMEN WRITERS AS A "SPRINGBOARD" By Steven H Propp Carol Patrice Christ (born 1945) is a teacher (Columbia University, Harvard Divinity School, Pomona College, San Jose State, and the California Institute of Integral Studies), director of the Ariadne Institute, and author/editor of books such as Laughter of Aphrodite: Reflections on a journey to the goddess, Rebirth of the Goddess: Finding Meaning in Feminist Spirituality, Womanspirit Rising: A Feminist Reader in Religion, Weaving the Visions: New Patterns in Feminist Spirituality, etc. This 1980 book is a series of reflections on the spiritual quest invoked by various women writers, such as Kate Chopin, Margaret Atwood, Doris Lessing, Adrienne Rich, Ntozake Shange, etc.She begins with the observation that "Women's stories have not been told. And without stories there is no articulation of experience... the depth of women's souls will not be known." (Pg. 1) She argues that this quest takes a distinctive form in the fiction and poetry of women writers, and begins in an "experience of nothingness"---in self-hatred, self-negation, and in being a victim. (Pg. 13)She suggests that women must "positively name the power that resides in their bodies and their sense of closeness to nature," and use this new naming to transform the pervasive cultural and religious devaluation of nature and the body. (Pg. 53)In her chapter on Lessing, Christ states that "Because women have not created philosophies, have rarely had access to spiritual authority, and rarely have had the opportunity to pursue exclusively intellectual or spiritual paths, it makes sense that they might be attracted to the practical, antiauthoritarian elements of the Sufi path." (Pg. 72)This early book of Christ's provides a very interesting side to her thought (particularly for those who associate her almost exclusively with "goddess" spirituality).

The Jungle Books (Illustrated) (Top Five Classics Book 24), by Rudyard Kipling, Top Five Books

From School Library Journal Grade 4-8?The law of the jungle?intense competition for one's niche?seems to apply to The Jungle Book, judging from the numerous editions jostling on the bookseller's shelf. The centenary of publication is the justification given for this avatar: but fortunately, it needs no excuse. All the Mowgli stories, and the perennial "Rikki-tikki-tavi," appear to glorious advantage in a handsome format. A manageable size, creamy paper, a clear typeface, and generous margins are as inviting as the 17 masterly full-page watercolors. They are beautifully composed, balanced but not static, freely handled but without any loss of clarity. Mowgli and the animals are characterized rather than idealized. Color and texture are subtle but lush. These contrasts perfectly complement the tension between order and "the jungle" evoked in Kipling's text. If survival of the fittest indeed applies to publishing, this edition should have a long life.?Patricia (Dooley) Lothrop Green, St. George's School, Newport, RICopyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Gr. 4^-7. In 18 rich watercolor paintings, Pinkney captures the sheer drama of the eight Mowgli stories and of the well-loved "Rikki-tikki-tavi." A handsome volume for collections of classic tales. Sally Estes

Review Collection of stories by Rudyard Kipling, published in 1894. The Second Jungle Book, published in 1895, contains stories linked by poems. The stories tell mostly of Mowgli, an Indian boy who is raised by wolves from infancy and who learns self-sufficiency and wisdom from the jungle animals. The book describes the social life of the wolf pack and, more fancifully, the justice and natural order of life in the jungle. Among the animals whose tales are related in the work are Akela the wolf; Baloo the brown bear; Shere Khan, the boastful Bengal tiger who is Mowgli's enemy; Kaa the python; Bagheera the panther; and Rikki-tikki-tavi the mongoose. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

The stories are a wonderful length for read alouds. The Jungle Book is, of course, a classic and not in need of a review; however, if your only exposure to the Jungle Book is Disney, please give this a try. I wanted to commend Sterling Publishers on making a quality, affordable edition of this and other classics. The paper quality was nice, not thin or translucent. The font is also pleasant--not to small or cramped. I know this may seem faint praise, but so many classics collections are very poorly executed. The price is also very agreeable--only slightly more than a paperback.

Over the years I have purchased many copies of each as presents. Both can be difficult to find in versions unaltered from the original. I have found this to be particularly true in the case of The Jungle Book. Some folks just don't seem to get that Kipling had a pretty good handle on what he was doing. One does not tamper with a Masterpiece. This version is the real thing. It reads word for word the same as the tattered, 40-year-old copy that I first read when I was eight years old. Add illustrations by Robert Ingpen that faithfully capture the emotion of the story and you have a real winner. For those who appreciate The Jungle Book as it was BEFORE it was adulterated by Mr. Disney and friends, this is a very worthy effort.

We have the Disney books and movies at home but since he is an avid reader and I love Rudyard Kipling I thought it was time to find him the real deal and this book is it. I like everything about it, the font type, the illustrations, and the writing is, well... Rudyard Kipling. Beautiful, rich, provocative language that unleashes a child's imagination. My son and I devoured it in a few nights and after we were done it led to a really deep discussion on the differences with the Disney's version. It was a welcomed reminder that we can understimate both our children's capacity to digest the classics and their appeal to them.

You promised, dear Lumen, to describe to me that supremest of moments which immediately succeeds death, and to relate to me how, by a natural law, singular though it may seem, you lived again your past life, and penetrated a hitherto-unrevealed mystery. Lumen. Yes, my old friend, I will now keep my word; and I trust that, thanks to the life-long communion of our souls, you will be able to understand the phenomenon you deem so strange. Andy Grant's Pluck, by Horatio Alger Jr.

About the Author Horatio Alger, Jr. was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts in 1832, the son of a Unitarian minister. He received a strict upbringing and was educated for a life in the church, graduating from Harvard in 1852. After leaving Harvard, Alger, to his father's disappointment, took a job as a historian in Middlesex County, Massachusetts and later worked as a teacher at a boys' boarding school in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. He traveled in Europe for a year, and then returned to the United States in 1857 to complete his studies at the Cambridge Divinity School. In 1864 Alger was ordained a minister at the First Parish Unitarian Church of Brewster on Cape Cod. Sixteen months later, however, he was dismissed from the pulpit after being accused of engaging in homosexual relations with two boys. After his dismissal, Alger began to focus on his writing career, which spanned more than three decades and 110 books. He wrote mainly children's books about boys and girls who rise from rags to riches through hard work and faith in the American dream. His first major success came with the publication of his eighth novel, Ragged Dick in 1868. Other popular novels include Luck and Pluck (1869), Tattered Tom (1871), and Strive and Succeed (1872). Alger also wrote several adult novels, including A Fancy of Her's (first published as The New Schoolma'am in 1877) and The Disagreeable Woman (1895). Alger, who never married, spent the last decades of his life living at his family home in South Natick, Massachusetts, where he died in 1899.

Amusing look back By wiredweird Alger made quite a name for himself, back around the turn of the twentieth century, writing uplifitng stories about young boys from unfortunate backgrounds. Invariably, as here, their hard work and innate niceness eventually lead them to great success. I haven't read others so I can't honestly generalize, but I see a lot of reusable elements here. There was the advantaged and snobby schoolmate, eager to sabotage Our Hero so that only he would win at whatever, hoist on his own petard. Another jealous co-worker conniving against him, ditto. A mortgage about to foreclose, saved by Andy's business acumen, thrifty ways, and perhaps a bit of what we'd now call insider trading. Somehow, he manages to come out of each scrape even further ahead, and his detractors even further behind.I don't recall readnig any of Alger's sermonettes before, and can't think of much reason to again. I can, however, honestly say that I've done it once.-- wiredweird(PS: This is long out of copyright and available electronically at no cost. I promise you, it will be worth every penny.)

Max Watman’s compulsively readable memoir of his dogged quest to craft meals from scratch.

After an epiphany caused by a harrowing bite into a pink-slime burger, Max Watman resolves to hunt, fish, bake, butcher, preserve, and pickle. He buys a thousand-pound-steer―whom he names Bubbles―raises chickens, gardens, and works to transform his small-town home into a gastronomic paradise. In this compulsively readable memoir, Watman records his experiments and adventures as he tries to live closer to the land and the source of his food.

A lively raconteur, Watman draws upon his youth in rural Virginia with foodie parents―locavores before that word existed―his time cooking in restaurants, and his love of the kitchen.

Amid trial and experiment, there is bound to be heartbreak. Despite a class in cheese making from a local expert, his carefully crafted Camembert resembles a chalky hockey puck. Much worse, his beloved hens―"the girls," as he calls them―are methodically attacked by a varmint, and he falls into desperate measures to defend them. Finally, he loses track of where exactly Bubbles the steer is.

Watman perseveres, and his story culminates in moments of redemption: a spectacular prairie sunset in North Dakota; watching 10,000 pheasants fly overhead; eating fritters of foraged periwinkles and seawater risotto; beachside with his son; a tub of homemade kimchi that snaps and crunches with fresh, lively flavor well after the last harvest.

With infectious enthusiasm, Watman brings the reader to the furthest corners of culinary exploration. He learns that the value of living from scratch is in the trying. With a blend of down-home spirit and writing panache, he serves up a delectable taste of farm life―minus the farm.

Harvest: Field Notes from a Far-Flung Pursuit of Real Food, by Max Watman

From Booklist Watman becomes conscious of food in his preteen years when he has to start cooking for parents convalescing from a traffic accident. Progressively more intrigued by foods’ origins, he eventually determines to raise his own food, particularly animals. Abhorrence of animal cruelty propels Watman toward vegetarianism, but he quickly acknowledges his dependence on meat. So he raises his own chickens. Antigun sentiment vanishes when a raccoon attacks his birds in their coop. He abandons his air rifle for the real deal and hunts pheasants in North Dakota. Turning briefly to less violence-prone cheese making, Watman aims for a Hudson River valley version of Camembert. A foray into hot-sauce production leaves him with a severe reaction to fresh chili peppers. Finally, he gets his own steer. Watman has a keen eye for the characters he meets in his wanderings across the U.S., but, never mocking, he appreciates each one’s contributions to the world of real food. --Mark Knoblauch

Review “While I was growing up on our family farm near Lyon, I learned the importance of seasonal produce and fully utilized livestock at an early age. Max Watman’s witty and vivid accounts of producing farm-fresh products such as cheese and preserves in a modern world brings back fond memories and had me laughing throughout.” (Daniel Boulud)“Max Watman has the descriptive and narrative power to make the outer limits of the food world seem both magnificently rare and dangerously explorable and appealing. Harvest finds the sweet overlap between our gustatory appetite and our hunger to keep turning the pages of a great story.” (Matt Lee and Ted Lee, authors of The Lee Bros. Southern Cookbook)“Succeeds not only as a memoir but also as a work to inspire everyone to try new things regardless of expertise.” (Publishers Weekly)“[Watman] captures the swing and momentum of food preparation, the Zen of hunting and fishing, and the sweet, quirky joys of family life .” (Eugenia Bone - The Wall Street Journal)“On the surface, Harvest is about food …[but] a deeper examination reveals that Harvest is also about family and friendship and the role of food in those relationships.” (Shannon Morgan - Washington Independent Review of Books)

About the Author Max Watman is the author of Chasing the White Dog: An Amateur Outlaw’s Adventures in Moonshine and Race Day: A Spot on the Rail with Max Watman. Raised in the mountains of Virginia and the kitchens of Washington DC, he currently lives in the Hudson Valley with his wife and son.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Thought provoking and entertaining! By Adam Richards I love finishing a book and discovering that I have been educated about a subject almost by accident. Harvest is just such a book. Filled with anecdotes both insightful and at times poignant, you can almost fail to realize you are being instructed by an author who has clearly done his homework. The sheer breadth of his knowledge is impressive, effortlessly weaving history, literature, and culinary expertise sprinkled with a smattering of music and geography. This book is an excellent starting point for those of who are struggling with balancing real-life practicality with smart food choices. It becomes increasingly difficult to determine what is suitable for eating. It seems every day there is an internet article trumpeting the latest cancer causing, mutant creating, death food du jour. This book helps to bring some sanity to the conversation. Yes, many of our foods are compromised, no we do not have to move to the country and live on communes to avoid the inevitable zombie apocalypse we keep being warned about. It is possible to educate yourself and make better decisions about what you ingest without taking drastic measures. We may not all be as adventurous and culinarily fearless as Mr. Watman, but we all do have the ability to at least understand what it is we are ingesting. If this understanding is reached while huddling around a stove with friends and an amazing glass of whiskey/wine...so much the better.Reading Harvest, I felt a similar sensation as to when I first read Huck Finn. Much as I once pictured myself floating down the Mississippi with Huck and Jim, I pictured myself in the fields of North Dakota sending Pheasants aflight. I could picture myself sitting in a smoky bar in France sampling legendary cheeses. Especially vivid to me were the chapters involving harvesting the bounty of the sea. Having been raised on Maryland Blue Crab and flounder, I was whisked back thirty odd years to the banks of the Potomac where I spent many of my happiest summer moments. Please stop reading this review and treat yourself to Harvest: Field Notes from a Far-Flung Pursuit of Real Food...you will not regret it!

Lotvin I guess I was looking for a book about a farmer. Harvest was about a sometime cook and dabbler in minor gardening. Yeah, he bought a steer but was pretty much uninvolved with it until it came time to eat it. To purchase chickens and then lose all six to predators and then give up: not a farmer. I was disappointed.
