I was looking for a good book and resource that would help lead me down the right path to becoming a vegetarian and eating more healthy. This book was everything I was hoping for and then some! It is filled with a tremendous amount of information that really explains all the benefits of embarking on a vegetarian diet, as well as, exactly what to eat and why... and there are tons of great recipes for vegetarian meals. I have tried several of the recipes and so far everything has been fabulous! Even my kids like the meals that I have fixed. Hollingsworth really gives you all of the tools that you need to get on a healthy path and implement a balanced vegetarian diet. If you are looking to get healthy or are looking for a book like this, then I highly recommend that you check this one out for sure!

A quick read and easy to follow. Very well written.

Excellet guide for people thinking of switching to a vegetarian diet By michael naylor This is an excellent book that can really help you make the change to a vegetarian diet. The book explains the benefits of a vegetarian diet and helps you make the transition. The book advises you of the alternatives available to the foods you currently eat and how you can continue to get the correct amount of nutrition. One of the main factors that put me off a vegetarian diet was where I would get my protein from being as my diet included a lot of meat and this book explains how I can replace this in my diet. The thing that really sets this apart from other books is the tips on maintaining your vegetarian diet. There are loads of books out there that claim to help you make the transition to a vegetarian diet and I have tried a few of them but I always found myself going back to meat. This book focusses on the long term and allows you to make a permanent change or at least for as long as you like without going back to meat.

125 of 127 people found the following review helpful. "The law is: The King Must Die." By Mary Whipple Mary Renault's great historical novel of Theseus begins when he is a young man in Troizen, a well-bred youth who has never known his father's identity. When, with the help of the gods, he succeeds in lifting a stone to reclaim his father's sword, Theseus discovers that he is the son of Aigeus, King of Athens. On his way to Athens to meet him, Theseus arrives in Eleusis, where after wrestling the king in a fight to the death, he finds himself, unexpectedly, the King of Eleusis. Later, in Athens, when fourteen young men and women are chosen by lot to become bull-dancers in Crete, fulfilling a tribute demanded by the King of Crete, Theseus listens to his god and joins the group, never knowing if he will survive to return to his father.Renault tells the story of Theseus as if Theseus were a real person, not a mythical character, using history, archaeology, and a deep understanding of the cultures of the period to place Theseus in a realistic context. Her descriptions of the lifting of the stone, the wrestling match in Eleusis, Theseus's arrival at the palace in Athens, and especially his experiences in becoming a bull dancer bring the period vibrantly to life in ways consistent with the historical record. Theseus's devotion to the god Poseidon, to whom he prays throughout his journey, reflects his appreciation of his own smallness in relation to the gods, and his honoring of the gods unique to the kingdoms he visits show how the Greek religion gradually incorporated increasing numbers of gods and goddesses to explain the increasingly complex mysteries of life faced by Greek citizens.Renault never fails to treat Theseus, his religion and culture, and the traditions of the countries in which he travels with the dignity they would have inspired in their own period. She never patronizes either her characters or her readers, writing with elegance and a fine appreciation for the details of daily life, the art of the period, and the pantheon of gods thought to control men's destinies. Whether Theseus was a real man whose strength and reputation grew to mythical proportions, as Renault illustrates, or whether he was, in fact, a mythical character whom she places in a realistic context in ancient Greece is less important than the fact that she creates a plausible life for this monumental character. Few, if any, other authors are so successful in recreating an entire era, its people, its beliefs, and its culture. Mary Whipple

The Theseus legend brought to life By JLind555 Those readers who were upset at Mary Renault "tampering" with the accepted myth of Theseus should realize that her interest is not mythology but history. As a historical novelist, Renault has no peer. She researched her subjects thoroughly and evoked the time and place so accurately that her books seem to spring into life. She was less interested in Theseus as a mythological figure than as a historical figure, and her rendering of Theseus as a lightweight, fast on his feet, quick and active, seems absolutely correct. Renault is probably correct in believing that the myth of the minotaur in the labyrinth derived from the actual bull dancers of ancient Crete, who were for the most part captive slaves from the subject territories ruled by Crete three thousand years ago, and her depiction of the bull court, and the team Theseus trained to dance with the bulls, realizing that they would either all survive together or they would all die together, is more compelling than any labyrinth story we are already familiar with. In "The King Must Die", Theseus becomes a very human figure we can relate to and empathize with, rather than a stiff mythological figure more god than man. This is Renault's genius -- she brings ancient civilizations so vividly to life that we feel we are right there in the middle of the action. "The King Must Die" is one of her best.

I generally don't reread books, so for me to do so as many times as I have with this one says a lot for the book. Before I read this, I was mildly familiar with the Theseus legend. After reading this book, I became extremely interested in the legend, particularly in the true-life palace at Knossos. The book gives some excellent background in the religions of the old matriarchal societies in which, each year, the king was sacrificed to the earth mother to ensure good crops for the next year. The theories on the bull dance which are based upon the findings at the palace of Knossos are excellently done. And the connection with Theseus belief that he is descended from the god Poseidon and so many things coinciding either with earthquake or something to do with the ocean prove that Mary Renault never left out any parts of her story when considering events that would take place. The research done for this book is great, and if you're like me it will lead you to do further research on your own. I recommend that you purchase this book and also its sequel The Bull from the Sea. You won't be going wrong!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Quick read, has some good information... By Simone O'Dowd I chose to give this book a three star rating because there are so many spelling errors and editing seemed to be lacking. Content wise, I like this book. It is informative and provides good information on the alkaline diet. It could be more in-depth but overall it is a good read. Very quick. I think my main sticking point would be the "read one chapter a week" recommendation. I didn't follow those instructions as I wanted to have all the information first. It does seem a little silly to not have all the basic information first before asking the readers to only read one chapter a week... I guess that on some level it seems as though you could go online and do your own research and write a similar book.... but I did get some good information out of it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. bad By customer not good. bad and unengaging writing. Information about diet is ok, although I don't trust this diet and it doesn't work for me.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. wonderfully written By Rosemary M. Goddard This book is a fantastic resource for people who are looking to get healthy. It explains why fruits and vegetables are important to the diet and which ones are the most beneficial. Great detail was taken in writing this book and it shows that the author actually cares about it's readers. There are a couple of recipes in the mix to help the reader get started on such an important step in the journey to get healthy.

"[...]espied a sulphur-coloured butterfly, and off he set in full chase; he did not, however, succeed in capturing it, for his foot tripped over a molehill and down he tumbled—the beautiful sulphur butterfly having fled across a wide ditch and escaped. Not far from where he fell there was a thorn bush and a number of unfortunate moles gibbeted thereon: some had been killed quite recently, so I took three or four from the thorn with the intention of taking them home and examining their stomachs to see what they had eaten. In the meantime, down we sat on an adjoining bank covered with primroses looking so gay and smelling so sweet. Willy then wanted to know the history of the mole; why people generally think it right to kill these animals, and whether they really[...]".

In 1976, Julian Jaynes proposed that the language of poetry and prophecy originated in the right, "god-side" of the brain. Current neuroscientific evidence confirms the role of the right hemisphere in poetry, a sensed presence, and paranormal claims as well as in mental imbalance. Left-hemispheric dominance for language is the norm. An atypically enhanced right hemisphere, whether attained through genetic predisposition, left-hemispheric damage, epilepsy, childhood or later traumas, can create hypersensitivities along with special skills. Dissociative "Others" may arise unbidden or be coaxed out through occult practices. Based on nearly twenty years of scientific and literary research, this book enters the atypical minds of poetic geniuses - Blake, Keats, Hugo, Rilke, Yeats, Merrill, Plath and Hughes - by way of the visible signs in their lives, beliefs, and shared practices.

In Their Right Minds, by Carole Brooks Platt

Review

'Carole Brooks Platt has written an extremely interesting book… Her research also highlights the neuroscience behind many of the manifestations of the poetic urge, the urge to sing rather than talk, as it were… This book is dealing with a universally serious subject... it is an enormously stimulating book.'

(Garry Kennard Interalia Magazine)

"Carole Brooks Platt's creative synthesis of neuroscience and the humanities offers fascinating brain/mind explorations of a number of poetic geniuses. This groundbreaking interdisciplinary work heralds a paradigm shift in literary analysis."

(Allan N. Schore, PhD, University of California at Los Angeles David Geffen School of Medicine)

"Childhood trauma, paranormal experiences, and the drive to write verse: why do these three things cluster together in the biographies of so many great poets? Drawing upon recent neuroscientific research plus anecdotal evidence from the lives of Yeats, Hugo, Merrill, Plath, Hughes, and others, Carole Brooks Platt argues convincingly for a link to the brain's right hemisphere. In an era of overspecialization, Platt is a rarity: a brilliant generalist, able to see patterns connecting topics as diverse as shamanism, séances, and psychotherapy. One of the poets under study here, Keats, famously compared the act of reading Chapman’s Homer to discovering a new planet, and I think the same can be said of reading Platt. She leaves us open-mouthed with wonder in a world we thought we knew."

(Julie Kane, PhD, Professor of English at Northwestern State University; former Fulbright Scholar and Louisiana Poet Laureate)

"In Their Right Minds is a cogent and lucid argument for the origin of creativity in the brain… The book offers a fascinating account about how the brain works in terms of inspiration: for some the fine line between transcendence, dreams, and wakefulness, the blurring between oneself and a literary creation… I'm not exaggerating by saying this is one of the most remarkable books I’ve recently read."

(Gregory F. Taque ASEBL Journal)

In her book “In Their Right Minds: The Lives and Shared Practices of Poetic Geniuses,” she gives concise and absorbing biographies of such great writers as Blake, Shelley, Yeats, Dickens, Rilke, James Merrill, Ted Hughes, Svlvia Plath, and more. Skipping gracefully from great life to great life, she offers a satisfying synthesis of what these artists share in terms of right-brained thinking, synesthesia, dissociative thinking, psychic research, and other expansions of consciousness. However, Platt’s real gift is to be simultaneously scholarly and liberating. The last chapter of her book is particularly fine, condensing the complicated lives of Hughes and Plath and the people around them into a coherent and sympathetic whole. I am quite sure the last thing Dr. Platt wanted to do was write a self-help book, and indeed she has not. But this one chapter, and indeed the whole book, is an inspiration to its readers to expand their minds, to dabble, to play, to listen, to think, to dream just as the writers she presents did. I can’t presume to say our doors of perception are cranking shut, but even to read the brief bits of poems Platt quotes makes us realize that there is a potential greatness in our consciousness that is obscured by what Picasso calls “the dust of everyday life.”To vaguely paraphrase Melville on Hawthorne, anyone with an interest in these matters should have this book in their collection, as should every college library in existence.

Charting poetic genius in right hemispheric brain activity By Gregory Tague Recently, my daughter (who is an artist) came home and started talking about how we have two brains, right and left. Other than the difference between our limbic system (the so-called mammalian brain) and our cortex, I had not thought much about the bilateral brain. Carole Brooks Platt has proved me wrong.Platt’s In Their Right Minds: The Lives and Shared Practices of Poetic Geniuses (Exeter: Imprint Academic, 2015) is a cogent and lucid argument for the origin of creativity in the brain. Platt is multi-knowledgeable across various disciplines, including the literary arts, neuroscience and consciousness studies, and psychology. The book offers a fascinating account about how the brain works in terms of inspiration: for some the fine line between transcendence, dreams, and wakefulness, the blurring between oneself and a literary creation. The book is packed with scientific details and biographical information (in a parallel form) about William Blake, John Keats, Victor Hugo, Rainer Maria Rilke, W.B Yeats, James Merrill, David Jackson, Sylvia Plath, and Ted Hughes. Looking to prehistory, Platt notes that we became fully human when our emotional side developed as much as our rational, and with these poets the emotional goes far beyond anything typical.Of course it’s more complicated than saying the left hemisphere equals language, math, and logic while the right hemisphere equals spatial ability, facial recognition, and visual/musical imagery. So Platt gets down to the individual level, how childhood trauma, mood disorders, and dissociative thoughts act as a springboard for right-hemispheric dominance in some people. The right hemisphere, borrowing from Arthur Koestler (according to Platt), puts thinking aside. So while the left hemisphere produces syntactical speech, the right hemisphere deals with subtleties. Referring to neuroscientist Michael Gazzaniga, Platt notes that the right hemisphere (contextual perception) sees reality while the left hemisphere (textual detail) interprets reality. Nevertheless, in order to completely understand anything, the right hemisphere is ultimately important. In terms of these writers dealing with dissociation, Platt covers reincarnation, séances, automatic writing, the Ouija board, telepathy and other paranormal events. Normally I’d be skeptical about all of this, but Platt has convinced me that in line with highly sensitive and creative right-hemispheric individuals these were truly crucial exercises as part of the process in their imaginative output. That is, the metaphorical-driven right hemisphere takes control for those who, because of early trauma (like the loss of a parent), are seeking emotional balance.I’m not exaggerating by saying this is one of the most remarkable books I’ve recently read. There is a surprising blend of interest in poetic creativity and neuroscience, invaluable for anyone engaged in the making or interpretation of the literary arts. D.H. Lawrence once said something about how Cézanne did not just paint apples but went behind the apples to show us what was there. Platt does not just chronicle the visions of poets and their inspiration but goes behind the scenes of their brains – she shows us how the mind of poetic genius works. While Platt focuses on the writers mentioned above, she is also well versed in many others. The book is a goldmine for the interdisciplinary synthesis of scientific and literary matter related to the brain as a creative mechanism.- Gregory F. Tague, Ph.D., author of Making Mind: Moral Sense and Consciousness.

Platt is interested in the role of right-brain dominance in the role of creative work, and she has researched the scientific evidence bearing on the subject extensively; there is a copious bibliography. But she doesn't stop with science. She explores the work and lives of certain poets who, paired with a partner, have derived inspiration--and sometimes information--from shared paranornal experience. The precondition for the ability to do this appear to be trauma in childhood: abuse, loss of a parent or important parental figure, gender confusion, severe illness. Any or all of these, combined with right-brain dominance, can result in extraordinary poetry. What's most startling about Platt's conclusions is the paranormal part. Best known among her examples is William Butler Yeats, whose wife George engaged in trance-based automatic writing; Yeats's strange book A Vision derives from his sessions with George. In the news now, owing to the recent publication of a biography, is the equally bizarre experience of James Merrill, who with his partner David Jackson received messages through a Ouija board, resulting in Merrill's trilogy The Changing Light at Sandover. Seances were the medium for Victor Hugo and members of his family.Platt builds her argument solidly on the science of neurology, but, convinced by the experience of the poets she has studied, remains open to the possibility that information can reach creative people traumatized in childhood--and not only them--through dreams, meditation, telepathy, and, yes, devices invented so that people can communicate with the other world and the deceased--pheomena resistent to replication in a lab. Open-minded readers, whether convinced or not, will find all this intriguing. Until some left-brain type discovers how the messages so conveyed are actually coming through by rational means, we might all do worse than to ponder the thesis of Platt's fascinating book.

Katharine Briggs is a giant in the field, although her taxonomic dissection of fairies into long lists of beings is a little tiresome to me these days. Great for younger readers with selection by parents, although I don't have children, I think I would read this to them if I did.

Leading neuroscience researchers are racing to unlock the secrets of the mind. On the cusp of decoding brain signals that govern motor skills, they are developing miraculous technologies that will enable paraplegics and wounded soldiers to move prosthetic limbs and will give all of us the power to manipulate computers and other objects through thought alone. These fiercely competitive scientists are vying for government and venture capital funding, prestige, and wealth.

Part life-altering cure, part science fiction, part Defense Department dream, these cutting edge brain-computer interfaces promise to improve lives-but they also hold the potential to augment soldiers' combat capabilities. In The Brain Electric, Malcolm Gay follows the dramatic emergence of these technologies, taking us behind the scenes in operating rooms, startups, and research labs, where the future is unfolding. With access to many of the field's top scientists, Gay illuminates this extraordinary race-where science, medicine, profit, and war converge-for the first time. But this isn't just a story about technology. At the heart of the scientists' research is a group of brave patient-volunteers, whose lives are given new meaning through these experiments. The Brain Electric asks us to rethink our relationship to technology, our bodies, even consciousness itself, challenging our assumptions about what it means to be human.

The Brain Electric: The Dramatic High-Tech Race to Merge Minds and Machines, by Malcolm Gay

Review

“Malcolm Gay’s new book, The Brain Electric, captures in an exciting, comprehensible, and dramatic style the race to build the first human-usable “mind”-controlled dexterous robotic arm . . . The Brain Electric is a book that makes the excitement of merging neuroscience and engineering accessible to everyone. I recommend it to young adults to attract them to science and engineering, to graduate students to motivate them, and to the public, who will gain a sense of the challenges and satisfaction associated with doing research.” ―A. Aldo Faisal, Science

“Malcolm Gay’s lively first book, The Brain Electric, centers on the efforts led by the legendary Defense Advance Research Projects Agency and the visionary director of its Revolutionizing Prosthetics program.” ―Barry Werth, The Wall Street Journal

“An ambitious, well-researched book,The Brain Electric illustrates the field's exciting potential not just to aid the disabled but one day, perhaps, to enhance human abilities altogether.” ―Jennifer Latson, The Boston Globe

“One of the most fascinating . . . books you will ever read.” ―Robert Epstein, Scientific American MIND

“The Brain Electric convincingly illuminates the ways current biomedical research and breakthroughs in neuroprosthetics are steadily gaining ground on what was once wild science fiction” ―Booklist

“Gay observes the brilliant, fiercely competitive, and unnervingly entrepreneurial neuroscientists who seek the means to bring humans one step closer to the transhuman realm . . . Gay is reassuringly skeptical of the tabloid-style hype surrounding neuroprosthetics, but he makes a convincing case that, sooner rather than later, neuroprostheses will become more commonplace.” ―Publishers Weekly

“To most, the notion of joining the human mind to a machine exists only in science fiction, yet revolutionary research combining medicine and technology has moved past proof of concept to demonstrate potentials for life-altering cures and military applications. First-time author Gay tells the emotional tale of scientific efforts in which neural implants, brain mapping, and advanced technology allow humans to control computers with their minds and instruct, for example, a prosthetic arm to hold someone's hand. While brimming with extensive and well-cited research studies, scientific background, and current events, the book comprises a collection of stories . . . The human side moves the narrative forward and will engage not just science readers but those who love inspiring people.” ―Library Journal

“In The Brain Electric, Malcolm Gay has brilliantly opened the door to a new and startling world of engineering that will eventually transform many thousands of lives for the better. He brings the creative scientific process to life with vibrant prose, an unerring eye for the telling human detail, and a flair for capturing the drama of intellectual discovery. This is a masterpiece of reporting, and science writing at its best” ―Fergus M. Bordewich, author of America’s Great Debate: Henry Clay, Stephen A. Douglas, and the Compromise That Preserved the Union

“What seemed the realm of science fiction just a few years ago is now real: the ability of a human being to manipulate a prosthetic arm fluidly and spontaneously, using only thought. So too can one person now think a movement and 'touch' another over a computer network. The human brain, it turns out, can learn with breathtaking speed to use digital networks and the machines they control as an extension of the mind and body. Malcolm Gay's The Brain Electric is a fascinating and thorough study of the fast-evolving science behind this inevitable mating, as well as of the recent revelations of neuroscience that we perceive all objects first in terms of how we can manipulate and move with them. At root, Gay's authoritative account is an exploration of consciousness and the concept of self at the cutting edge of science. A must-read for anyone who wonders just how far we've come.” ―Peter Heller, author of The Dog Stars and The Painter

Malcolm Gay did a great job of communicating the nature of brain research and the state of technology regarding human thought as it is being used to control movement of prosthetic devices. But he also went further, exploring the human nature of the scientists, their competitiveness, what they think of each other's work, and their occasional efforts to outmaneuver or trash each other, etc. This, too, is a fascinating element of the story. Another notable element of the author's style is the concise descriptions of the characters, which give the reader a unique mental image for each one. Excellent work!

Brew The Brain Electric is a useful overview for general readers of the state of the art for brain-machine interfaces in the first decade of the 21st century. Malcolm Gay has done his research; there is a well-written notes section that discusses important papers to read for those who would like to delve further into this field. I enjoyed learning about the human side of this area of neuroscience research especially a bit about the patients that have been the pioneers of this research.

A fascinating read By Cloggie Downunder “We understand very little of the brain’s most basic functioning, and its three pounds of neural tissue do not readily yield their secrets to the system of 1s and 0s Leuthardt and his cohorts would use to reveal its mysteries. And that’s to say nothing of the more basic biological problem researchers encounter when they try to join the hard stuff of electrodes to the squishy tissue of the brain”The Brain Electric: The Dramatic High-Tech Race to Merge Minds and Machines is the first book by American journalist and author, Malcolm Gay. In this book he describes recent advances in neuroscience and the race to produce a marketable interface between brain and prosthetic limbs. Gay explores the myriad of technologies that need to be brought together and the teams of researchers working on different aspects of the problem. He delves into the history of prosthetic limbs and of brain research, describing the pioneers and the current big names in the field.Although he makes every effort to describe the complex technology in layman’s terms, it is inevitable that some of the technical aspects will have readers’ eyes glazing over, but the sections that deal with experiments involving animals and human volunteers are quite engrossing. Especially interesting is the Jennifer Aniston neuron, but to find out just what that is (no, don’t be unkind, of course she has more than one), you will have to read the book.Gay’s commentary on the politics of research, that various teams were “…involved in highly competitive and sometimes vituperative competition to move this technology forward” adds a bit of spice. The advances already made and the potential possibilities seem at the same time miraculous and frightening. He includes twelve pages of notes on his text and a comprehensive index. He tells us: “The average human brain teems with some 100 billion neurons that collectively shimmer with electrochemical consciousness. No one knows how these three pounds of tissue and electricity, awash in a chemical bath of neurotransmitters, result in consciousness, but we do know that delicate yet routine tasks like pinching a few strands of saffron are in fact the collaborative result of thousands of individual neurons that speak to one another. Information moves like sheet lightning across the brain, forming transient patterns of activity that expand and recede as specific clusters of neurons spark other clusters into action” A fascinating read.

I've given 4 stars because I personally wish it had more of Hubble pictures. That aside, the pictures it does have are beautiful and the information it gives about Hubble makes it well worth it.

Pretty ok, good and basic, not a great keeper reference By R Hart What I don't appreciate in a book this size is a dozen artist impressions when there are millions of real Hubble images. Lots of history, news coverage and biography, and only grade school science. Its like a very large National Geographic magazine special, which is exactly what it is, I guess.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Lots of great photos By Amanda M. Jones I gave this to my nephew for Christmas. He's at an age where he's too cool to think anything is cool, so it's hard to tell what he thought of it. I thought it was great; lots of pictures, well written. I only wish it had more (or better) wide-view shots of the deep field. I was hoping for something that would really give you an idea of how small our galaxy is out there with everything else (we had a Hubble deep field poster in one of my college astronomy classes that did just that, and it was awesome).
