Most of the people I know chose to be gluten free as a way to lose weight and experienced great results. Not every single one, but most did. The part that impresses me is that they had fewer digestive issues, bloating was almost non-existent and even their skin cleared up. Not one ever suspected that gluten could be the cause.

Not surprisingly, most of them started on their journey following the Wheat Belly Diet or a similar type program that promoted wheat as something your body doesn’t need. If you want to achieve a healthier balanced diet, then a gluten free one may be the way to go.If you love this cookbook, don’t miss out on the others in the series.

About the Author Who is Charity Wilson? Charity Wilson is the loving mother of four children, well five if you count her husband of over 25 years. She has worked in various jobs over the years but realized one day home is where she needed to be. After a lot of deliberation and research, she decided to become a full-time writer. Being a full time at home mom and writer sounds like a lot of work and for good reason, it is. She loves every minute of the organized chaos that is her daily life. It is what fuels her ideas and inspires her to write the books she does. She loves to share what she knows and is always willing to learn something new. She loves to cook and create new recipes which you will find shared throughout her various cookbooks. She stays up to date on the most current diets but doesn’t particularly follow any one of them. She eats to enjoy while consciously watching her health. She knows people need a variety of recipes to avoid the boredom that leads to weight gain and tries to fill that void. Her passions don’t stop at cooking and she is an avid gardener, organizer and loves reading. She is known amongst the kids in the sports community as “the lady with the best chocolate chip cookies ever.” She enjoys being able to watch her children play sports and is quite active herself. In the end, you could call her a homebody. Charity is all about living life with passion and enjoying every moment. Life is about enjoying good food, great company and waking up every day happy to do it all over again.

This cookbook has so many great recipes I can hardly wait to try. I just sent my daughter the info on it because she and her family are also GF. It is so much easier now than it was three years ago because there are a lot more GF baking mixes and many more good GF cookbooks. I come from a long line of good cooks and love cooking most of our meals from scratch. Baking has been a real challenge, because we live at a high altitude, but my husband is an excellent baker and has had some major successes now. I've now been completely GF for a month and feel so much better. I will now check on this author's other GF cookbooks.

A fierce and funny memoir of kitchen and bedroom from James Beard Award winner Betty Fussell A survivor of the domestic revolutions that turned American television sets from Leave It to Beaver to The Mary Tyler Moore Show to Julia Child’s The French Chef, food historian and journalist Betty Fussell has spotlighted the changes in American culture through food over the last half century in nearly a dozen books. In this witty and candid autobiographical mock epic, Fussell survives a motherless household during the Great Depression, gets married to the well-known writer and war historian Paul Fussell after World War II, goes through a divorce, and finally escapes to New York City in her mid-fifties, batterie de cuisine intact. My Kitchen Wars is a revelation of the author’s lifelong love affair with food—cooking it, eating it, and sharing it—no matter where or with whom she finds herself. From Princeton to Heidelberg and from London to Provence, Fussell ladles out food, sex, and travel with her wooden spoon, welcoming all who come to the table.

My Kitchen Wars: A Memoir, by Betty Fussell

Amazon.com Review She may be a cookbook author, but Betty Fussell's extra-tart autobiography is no ordinary gastronomic memoir. For starters, her attitude toward cooking ("the one activity, besides tennis, in which housewives were encouraged to excel") is decidedly ambivalent. A chapter entitled "Attack by Whisk and Cuisinart" paints a devastating portrait of entertaining as a competitive sport, in which women who spend weeks planning and executing elaborate dinner parties must "pretend there'd been no labor, no expense, no fatigue, no sweat ... the aim was to look like a hot tomato while remaining cucumber-cool." For another thing, anyone with Fussell's gift for apt metaphor should enjoy chapters like "To Arms with Squeezer and Slicer," or "Invasion of the Waring Blenders," whose titles wittily encapsulate their content and would be wasted on mere recipes or recollections of Chefs I Have Known. Instead, she limns the experience of a generation of women who flung themselves into domesticity after World War II with mixed results, which in the author's case included an ultimately failed marriage to cultural historian Paul Fussell (who is not treated gently here). Smart, funny, even appetizing at times, her book takes one woman's story as a case study of the role food plays in our lives and in our culture. --Wendy Smith

From Publishers Weekly As befits a noted food historian and writer (I Hear America Cooking), Fussell recounts how the domestic wars of her childhood, marriage and family life played out in a succession of kitchensAin brilliant vignettes marked by appealing humor, biting irony and unflinching honesty. In the house where Fussell was born, the scene of her father's delight in squeezing oranges became, before Fussell was two, that of the death of her high-strung mother, with an open tin of rat poison mutely testifying to the cause. Until Fussell escaped to college, she endured the harsh restrictions of a hostile stepmother whose favorite appliance was the pressure cooker. At school, Fussell concentrated on the primary mission of every girl in the late 1940s: landing a man. When she married Paul, a literature student, the inevitable wedding present of that eraAa Waring blenderAsymbolized the beginning of a sophisticated lifestyle. Paul focused on his career in academe, while Betty enthusiastically embraced her role as wife and mother, and turned entertaining into a competitive sport. In the 1960s, the Fussells' circle turned to erotic excess: Betty recalls drunken wife-swapping and her own illicit affair, and she offers gossipy tidbits about Kingsley Amis and Philip Roth. Paul's book, The Great War and Modern Memory, brought him acclaim but, according to Betty, he continually demeaned her writing efforts. Their marriage failed after his homosexual affair with a student. Fussell was finally able to make her own way using what the French call a "batterie de cuisine" (kitchen artillery), displaying her considerable talents in such publications as the New York Times and nine of her own books. Agent, Gloria Loomis, Watkins Loomis Agency. First serial to the New Yorker; 8-city author tour. (Oct.) Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Fussell's riveting memoir parallels the lives of many women who fought their own private wars against a backdrop of tense world politics. Readers will empathize with her dysfunctional West Coast childhood, anticipate her liberation as she attends college during World War II, and celebrate her romantic marriage to a veteran with a promising academic career (historian Paul Fussell). Life as a young faculty wife began with earthy, pot-luck picnics and flirtation and evolved into elaborate, multicourse dinner parties, extramarital affairs, and boredom during the affluent, turbulent Sixties. Her marriage failing, Fussell embarked on her own remarkable career, becoming a food historian/writer acclaimed for her most recent work, The Story of Corn (LJ 7/92). More intense than Ruth Reichel's Tender at the Bone (LJ 3/15/98), this work features dark humor and stunning gastronomic descriptions that will speak to Fussell's contemporaries and astonish younger generations fighting different battles today. 39 of 39 people found the following review helpful. from another era By Karen Sampson Hudson As I read this book, my mouth dropped open more and more---not so much because of all the mouth-watering food descriptions, as because it seems like a tale from another time, as remote from my own as Chaucer's stories. Betty Fussell is original and engaging; her work is detailed and sensuous like that of the medieval bard. At one point she quotes an even more famous bard, Shakespeare, "An expense of spirit in a waste of shame," referring to the obsessive amount of time and energy she and her faculty-wife peers spent on their elaborate party meals. One doesn't have to be overly perceptive to realize how good food became such a priority in her life, as she tells us how all the food was "mush" in her childhood; or to realize that, however odd it may seem, she was relieved, even "euphoric"(her own word) at the loss of her third and last baby, since from an early age, she lacked a loving mother herself. Most of her book is about the postWWII era, an anomaly in American life, a time of great prosperity when even English professors made very good money and were able to acquire large, lovely houses and to make frequent trips to live for months at a time in Europe. Denied a career of her own in those pre-feminist times, she poured her efforts into cooking and became an "amateur" expert. (She even moaned the invention of the Cuisinart food processor, which made obsolete all those whisks and grates and sieves she had worked so hard to collect.) In an era of outwardly conservative conformity, she tells us of the troubled marriages and casual adulteries that seemed to be the norm in her circle. She had her heart broken twice: By a writer with whom she carried on an affair that lasted years, and by her husband, whom she caught in a homosexual encounter with one of his students. I love my Cuisinart. I have been a "faculty wife" now for as long as she was, and, like all my friends, my time has been taken up with wider causes than gourmet wooden spoons and garlic presses. Yet my heart goes out to this articulate woman, born less than twenty years before I was, whose life was so constrained and frustrating. There is a wrenching sadness about this book, despite the easy and prosperous era of its setting.

She lived a lifestyle I had vaguely read about, like the Maoris or Amazon Indians or Eskimos, and all I can think of is, how did she do it 20 or 30 years ago? Life among the "intelligensia", heavy drinking and wifeswapping and cooking the entire gourmet Julia Child repetoire, copper pots and truffles and pate...parties, parties, parties, from 4 to 75. Elaborate French dishes painstakingly prepared from scratch. She even sewed her own dinner gowns, for crying out loud! Trips to France on ocean liners, eating their way through France...studying, writing, intellectual discussion of Shakespeare, adulterous canoodling with a neighbor. I thought the husband was a professor but he must have made a mint - where did she get all the money for all the wine, the exotic ingredients? Where did she get the time, the energy? I am in awe and wonder at this slice of I-don't-know-who's-life. (By the way, the marriage broke up for good when she found her husband with another man, which I saw coming from her very first description of him.) Real food for thought, somesthing like reading farm journals of the pioneer ladies who had to make their own soap, churn the butter, and sew all the family's clothes....how did she do it all? Where did all those guests come from, to all those parties, in costumes yet! How could she possibly raise two children in the midst of this madness, and how did they turn out? (They are given short shrift.) She does not get my sympathy, but I found this book fascinating. I give it four stars for presentation, but am mystified as to what the ingredients are and how they got there.

Now 72, she has just released her 10th, a memoir titled My Kitchen Wars. In between, she has produced a highly respected body of work in the fields of food and cooking -- two vastly different subjects, as readers of her hands-on cookbooks and her scholarly food histories will testify. My Kitchen Wars, a soul-baring, major departure from her earlier books, is sure to become a favorite among her current fans, and likely to reap a new crop of admirers. The compact 238-page volume skillfully weaves American history, food lore, literary anecdotes, motherhood, and an unsparing look at the discriminatory, male-dominated world of academia in the postwar U.S. The theme of food runs through the book like a golden thread, and there are even a few recipes sewn into the fabric. My Kitchen Wars is at once instructive, entertaining, heart-rending, and eventually uplifting. The book begins rather slowly, with a tracing of Fussell's family roots back to the 18th century. The tempo picks up when Fussell describes her emotionally scarred childhood in Southern California during the Great Depression, and the narrative becomes truly absorbing when Fussell recounts her teenage years in World War II. From that point on, the book traces a familiar theme -- the coming of age in the 1940s and '50s -- but does so with rare insight and brutal honesty, letting us glimpse the era through new eyes. Fussell's experiences, despite their remarkableness, were paralleled by those of a whole generation of American women, and many will identify with her struggles to raise a family and boost her husband's career, while living an intellectual life of her own, against constant obstacles. At an estimated 70,000 to 75,000 words, the book's only disappointment is that it is too short; one can easily imagine it twice as long, with no letdown in quality. From what Fussell tells of her writing habits, it seems likely that she DID write a book twice as long, and that it was whittled down by editors. But with Fussell in her writing prime, we can expect more gems from her prolific pen before long.Almost as an afterthought, I should mention for those unfamiliar with Fussell's background that she was married for more than 30 years to Paul Fussell, the noted historian, writer, and social critic. His 1975 work, The Great War and Modern Memory, is often considered one of the finest nonfiction books written by an American this century. Betty Fussell reveals him in all his contradictions and complexities, and he does not come off well. To her credit, she is hardly kinder to herself, unabashedly describing her long- standing adultery that speeded the marriage breakup.Despite her crucial support of her husband's career -- typing and correcting his manuscripts, offering improvements, and freeing him from worldly chores so that he could excel as a college professor and writer -- she got only discouragement from him when she decided to pursue writing on her own. Not until after their 1981 divorce could her career get off the ground. In view of her success, Mr. Fussell's credibility must be seriously challenged.Perhaps in some parallel universe, their roles were reversed, and she became the famous academic and he the late-blooming author. With a few changes in their personalities -- not their intellects -- it could have happened that way. Fortunately, we still have both Fussells with us, both crafting fine books that reflect a lifetime of learning.(Written December 1999. Email: sunreport@aol.com)

Fascinating look at the German Jewiry By Kindle Customer I first read Wsssermann's later novels (Der Fall Maritius, Joseph Kerkovens Zweites Leben and Edzel Andersch) a few years ago. I found him to be a master story teller with the ability to record the mental anguish of his characters.I decided to read Die Juden von Zirndorf, the novel which started Wassermann's literary career. I downloaded the Kindle book before my 2012 summer vacation and read it during a trip to Germany that included visits to cities mentioned in the novel. The Kindle format was great for travel. As an non native speaker of German a dictionary would ave been nice but for some reason this function is not available on the Kindle Fire. The novel itself was fascinating, a combination of historical settings, mystical events that would be in place in "magic realism" and deep psychological insight. It is easy to see who the writer of this book grew into the man Thomas Mann praised as a master story teller.

Are you a wheat free wannabe?

50 Gluten Free Recipes For Grain Free Living

Love wheat? Hate how it makes you feel, but have no idea how to live without it? If so, then this book is for you.

Inside you will find 50 gluten free recipes that will make you forget you ever liked the wheat.

Gluten Free Does Not Limit You

Granted, learning to eat gluten free can be quite the chore. Reading labels and watching for secret hidden gluten containing ingredients can make it feel like you need a degree in some type of science. Who makes words up like:

    • Triticum vulgare (wheat)
    • Triticale (cross between wheat and rye)
    • Hordeum vulgare (barley)
    • Secale cereale (rye)

The best idea is to continually try new recipes and be mindful of the ingredients that are going into them. Once you have a couple hundred recipes you will never need to worry about accidentally ingesting gluten and suffering the consequences again. You are in control.

Why Live A Gluten Free Lifestyle?

Many people choose a gluten free lifestyle due to the adverse side effects gluten causes them to experience. If you suffer from celiac disease you know exactly what that means. It can be excruciatingly painful and you have a very real reason to avoid gluten. Like any disease there are people experiencing abdominal distress that have no idea it is a gluten intolerance.

Many people are now consciously choosing to eliminate gluten from their diet for reasons that are not medically based at all. They find they have less bloating and that their digestion is better. People who stopped eating gluten have also seen an increase in success with their weight loss goals.

Living gluten free has numerous benefits and if you suspect you may have a wheat sensitivity or intolerance then switch out your regular wheat based meals with these gluten free meals and see how your body feels. Try it for at least six weeks to give your body a chance to adjust to the new lifestyle. You will not be disappointed.

I have a niece that is Gluten intolerant and when we have family gatherings we take that into account when preparing meals. This Gluten Free Cookbook starts with an introduction that does a good job of explaining gluten insensitivities and about the millions of people in American that live with problems with gluten. There are instructions to help you when shopping and the differences in cooking. There is a section on cooking tips which I found helpful.Next is what we all look for - the recipes. As stated in the title there are 50 recipes that include breakfast, soups and salads, main dishes, appetizers and desserts. Charity Wilson makes it very clear that experimenting and documenting your thoughts on a recipe will help you to personalize your meals overtime so you really like everything I have tried the Shrimp Surprise and the Greek Salad and they were both delicious. If you are looking for a good Gluten Free Cookbook i would highly recommend this one.

Charity Wilson certainly delivers with this one. There are breakfast, appetizers, main dishes, Desserts, Soups & salads recipes. I can't wait to make the peanut butter cookies and the fried chicken. All dishes my kids really miss since we are following a gluten-free diet. The recipes are well presented and the instructions are clear and concise making the preparation easy to follow. Highly recommended for anyone looking for gluten-free recipes.

A relative has recently been diagnosed with celiac disease and I will definitely be showing her this book as it is filled with meals that can be made at any time of the day, using simple ingredients and most importantly - sound delicious. Who knew you could still have cheese biscuits, pear muffins, granola, polenta, pizza, crepes, cheese sticks pretzels and lasagna amongst other tasty dishes? Pick this book up - you won't regret it.

While journalist and author Ann Hark spent many years in Philadelphia, the hills and farmlands of south-central Pennsylvania captured her heart. Her fascination with Pennsylvania Germans (especially Plain folk) and their ways led to research into everything from recipes to pottery, superstitions to ceremonies. She attended an Amish wedding and a Dunker love-feast, watched applebutter being made, and visited a one-room schoolhouse. She traveled, along with her Chauffer and her canine companion, Patsy, among her Blue Hills in search of lonely cemeteries and beautiful picnic spots. Hark compiled her entertaining writings into a year-long celebration of her piece of heaven (a summer cottage in Mt. Gretna) and the surrounding region. It will delight all who have sampled Pennsylvania German culture or explored its history.

I found this book originally on the shelves of a library in Ohio, about 20 years ago and fell in love with it. Ann Hark gives such intriguing descriptions of her experiences with her Pennsylvania Dutch neighbors, you feel like you're standing there beside her. My favorite part is the letter from the little Amish girl, Levina Beiler. Moreover, there are recipes for the delicious foods she describes in great detail, so when you're able to pry yourself from your reading, you can go cook the very same dishes that set your mouth to watering enough to put the book down to begin with, and taste them for yourself. I read this with my 9 and 11 year old daughters, and they enjoy it, too.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Not What I Expected By Jill I love cooking and eating, especially of those cultures that are outside of my own. I picked this book out because I have been to "Amish country" quite often, as I live not too far from Shipshewana, Indiana. I've eaten some truly amazing things made by the Amish, and I hoped that by having this book, I would be able to replicate some of these things.I was left really, really disappointed. I was expecting a collection of made-from-scratch home cooking, but that's not what this book includes. On the first page alone, there are ingredients like Velveeta cheese, frozen juice from concentrate, Cool Whip, and canned soup. There are so many store bought, processed foods in this book, from candies to food colorings. I was definitely not expecting so much dependency on store-bought ingredients. I assume this is due to a large volume of recipes mixed with the Amish belief system which limits technology, but I was also disappointed that there were no pictures in this book.It reminded me of one of the spiral bound cookbooks from a girl scout troop or PTA or mother's club that you can pick up at a garage sale. It's not a bad collection per se, but for me the title is definitely a misleading one. That being said, there are definitely still recipes in this cookbook that I would totally make. I also really like the weaving of blessings, kind thoughts, and religious songs that are tied into the recipes. It helped to remind me that it is in fact an Amish collection. A few of the recipes that I would like to try are Sadie Glick's Shoo-Fly Pie, Feathery Light Dumplings, Little Girl Pies, Pizza Meat Loaf, and Venison Bologna.I think this is an okay cookbook, but not what I was anticipating based on the title and description. There's a lot of recipes here that are good for big families or parties.Harvest House Publishers provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

That was what made it special. To hear about the little details of the Amish Life was fun. There were plenty of recipes and many of them were unique like making cottage cheese. These are the gems that make a cookbook worth having. I believe that it is similar to other Amish and Mennonite cookbooks. The reason that I try to buy them and use when I am looking for unique things. Truly glad that I got to read and have the recipes to go through. I love cookbooks because they are idea generators for meals and deserts.I would like to thank Net Galley and Harvest House Publishing for allowing me to read and review this book in return for a free copy and I was never asked to write a favorable review by anyone.

Includes hymns and short poems By Night Owl Reviews In this newest Amish cookbook, we get to choose from 450 different recipes offered by the Evart, Michigan Amish community. They offer every kind of recipe from appetizers to breads, from pies to cakes, from meats to main dishes – there’s a recipe that will suit everyone in this book. There are also hymns and short poems included to entertain us as we are looking for a new recipe or two to try.Since there were so many recipes to choose from, it was hard to pick which ones I wanted to try for the first time. Right from my first read through of the book, I found 8 recipes I can’t wait to make. They were: Fruit Slush, Orange Shakes, Banana Cake, Peanut Butter Cookies, Crispy Baked Chicken, Oreo Pudding, Peanut Butter Bars and Herb Butter. The one downfall I experienced while reviewing this book was that there weren’t any pictures offered for any of the recipes. I’m not sure if that was just because it was an ARC copy, or if the final book won’t have any pictures as well. I always like seeing a picture of what the final product should look like so I can gauge how well my attempt at it turned out. Aside from that fault, I really enjoyed reviewing this book and I can’t wait to try these new recipes.Disclosure: Free review copy from the publisher/author for an honest review.Review by: Diana Coyle
