This comprehensive work covering all the owls of North America, including Mexico and the Caribbean, is the newest addition to the trusted Peterson Reference Guide series. Owls are perhaps the most intriguing of all birds — instantly recognizable and endlessly fascinating. Whether viewed as symbols of wisdom or bad omens, these unusual birds have had a hold on human imagination for millennia. Heard more often than seen, many owls are best identified by vocalizations; this is the only owl guide to include access to a collection of recordings. It is also the only North American owl book to include the Caribbean, covering 39 species of owls, including many little-known tropical species. With detailed information about identification, calls, habitat, nesting, and behavior, this Reference Guide has the most up-to-date information about natural history, biology, ecology, migration, and conservation status. It is heavily illustrated with hundreds of color photos, and includes the most accurate color range maps ever presented, showing breeding, wintering, and migration routes. This is a definitive work, useful for serious birders and ornithologists but accessible for the non-expert.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. An owl-lover's "wish list" book... top-notch photos, detailed info on each species... By Tree sparrow I received this book as a gift and am truly excited to have it. Just from what I've seen so far, I know I'll enjoy it every bit as much as a mammal one I have from the Peterson series (which is one of my all-time favorite natural history books), and I always love Weidensaul's writing. The photos are top-notch... beautiful, super clear, and revealing behavioral aspects of each species, adding to the pleasure of lingering over each one. The profiles are nicely organized and of a generous length, so there's an abundance of information here that you won't find in other typical references. I'm delighted to have this book and am thinking of others who may like having their own copy as a gift.
10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. A great addition to the Peterson Field Guide collection By Brant A great addition to the Peterson Field Guide collection. Pictures are very clear and very helpful with aiding in identification There was much more information about each owl than I expected. Scott Weidensaul was an excellent choice to author this book and it truly reflected in this work. Many other guides are restricted to mostly pictures and two pages or so of information. The format of this guide is great for anyone who not only wants to identify owls, but who also want to learn a good deal of information about them.
6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. easy to use By Cabra montés Just received my copy of a truly remarkable book. Not only because it keeps the quality standard in every aspect (info, design, easy to use, maps, photography as well printing and paper quality) of the Peterson's Guides, but also because its geographical scope. First ever to cover also the neotropical species present in North America, as it includes the ones in Mexico and the Caribbean. So another very well done book by Scott Weidensaul. It's a most for anyone interested in the owls and birdlife south from the border. Very recommended.
