Review Myra Lewin has penned another success in "Simple Ayurvedic Recipes." She has taken the approach to healthy eating in her first book "Freedom in Your Relationship with Food" and written a simple guide and recipe book that puts her balanced approach into practice. Seasoned Ayurvedic practitioners and baby beginners, alike, will find timeless nuggets and easy creations to put one on a path toward greater health and well-being. ----Publisher reviewFor the "modern" working man or woman with not alot of time to cook, these are great recipes that are simple, easy, and "fast" but does not skimp on nourishment and great combinations. --Audrey A. --Taiji teacherA baby beginner in the kitchen at the age of 40 and overwhelmed by how to eat according to Ayurveda and my dosha type, I found great simplicity and ease in the kitchen with Myra's book "Simple Ayurvedic Recipes." Not "Indian Food". I was actually surprised by just how simple these recipes are. But if you are attempting to simplify your mind and develop tranquility, these foods will definitely help.THE GOOD: What I really like about this book.- Real Ayurvedic principles in the recipes are good for being confident that your food will benefit your health and spiritual development.- Ms. Lewin is apparently very knowledgeable about Ayurveda, mentioning ancient texts to back up her methods.- It is well written, informative yet concise.- Includes all the basics, breakfast, grains, rice, legumes, vegetables and miscellaneous.THE BAD: What I thought was a bit unnecessary.- Several of the recipes are actually so simple that they probably don't need to be in a book. Such as the recipe for rice, which calls for the ingredients of rice, water and ghee. (To be fair, most are not THIS simple.)The I DON'T KNOW: Things I'm not sure whether I like or not.- While the book is in no way full of "fad diet" garbage, it does come across as slightly commercial with so many references to the author's previous book and her website. Even the cover states "A companion Cookbook to Freedom in your Relationship with Food". I have not read this book and probably will not. I was interested in seeing her recipes and the Ayurvedic theory she felt appropriate to share. Frequent references to her previous book seems like marketing. Her website is also frequently mentioned, which while it does provide some free information, also advertises a lot for sale.- Aside from the cover, there is no pictures of any of the meals in the book. The author says this is to stimulate the reader's imagination.... I don't know... However, in fairness, most of the recipes are so simple, they do not need a picture. If you are trying to eat extremely healthy foods and are not interested in what Lao Tzu would call "dainty dishes", then you will probably find this cookbook very useful. Thanks for taking the time to read :)

Reading the Introduction and the chapters on Helpful Tips and Illness, Recovery and Prevention BEFORE trying the recipes was of great benefit. This book is coming from a place of honesty, generosity and willingness to educate as well as a respect for Ayurvedic principles of food prep, cooking and eating. I especially like the emphasis of (home-made) ghee as the predominant cooking oil - it has led me to an appreciation of its anti-inflammatory properties and how helpful that is in balancing excessive Pitta. Thank you Myra and team!

Now, every morning, I cook something from this cookbook. There are some fantastic recipes that taste awesome and I feel awesome after I eat them (and awesome feeding them to my family). Her muffins recipe is so good and our two year old loves them. I was amazed that the recipe didn't even have any maple syrup or fat in it and it tastes really, really good. I never expected a baked good to taste that good. I love the pizza recipe (I think that is in her other book "Freedom in Your Relationship with Food), Sweet Adzukis is super tasty, and I love the Green Beans with Chard recipe. They're easy, nonintimidating, and so surprisingly tasty. I love this book.
