From prehistory to the present day, an unrivaled look deep into the contentious origins of the Celts

Blood of the Celts brings together genetic, archaeological, and linguistic evidence to address the often-debated question: who were the Celts? What peoples or cultural identities should that term describe? And did they in fact inhabit the British Isles before the Romans arrived? Author Jean Manco challenges existing accounts of the origins of the Celts, providing a new analysis that draws on the latest discoveries as well as ancient history. In a novel approach, the book opens with a discussion of early medieval Irish and British texts, allowing the Celts to speak in their own words and voices. It then traces their story back in time into prehistory to their deepest origins and their ancestors, before bringing the narrative forward to the present day. Each chapter also has a useful summary in bullet points to aid the reader and highlight the key facts in the story. 102 illustrations

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Reference Book By Sarah A. Atkins This book is a good addendum to the earlier "Ancestral Journeys: The Peopling of Europe" because it updates later DNA findings. It does repeat some of what's in the earlier book. Although at times I felt like I was studying for final exams, it is an excellent reference to keep on hand and I do have a better understanding of how current DNA analysis is arrived at.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyable read By Cyndye Batchelor Truly enjoying reading this. So much information packed into one book. Learning so much that I have to take it in short bites to digest it all.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A starting point for investigators By John L Murphy This narrative history is well-written. Even if by necessity there's a lot on weaponry and Bell Beakers, as that is the extant evidence. What we lack is abundant confirmation of what the peoples (not "races") who spoke Celtic languages thought, how they communicated, and what they did. The remains are scanty, the accounts usually from the classical and Christian chroniclers with their own biases, and the DNA traces only beginning to open up serious study. Manco rejects the Anatolian theory of Colin Renfrew and recent attempts to bolster it by epidemiological analogy. Her denial of this was hasty, and I wanted as an observer of this unfolding scholarly debate more grounds to back up her negative view.Instead, she backs the Pontic-Steppe theory of PIE proto-Celtic origins, boosted by the DNA discovery of a Mal'ta boy in Siberia 24k years ago. This to Manco supports a Central Asian homeland for the R1 ancestors of the Celts and many Europeans. Added to the prehistoric farmers and the Copper Age migrants, these three strands entered the "blood" of many who descend from the peoples who took the long path to Western Europe. Interestingly, the genetics also show, logically, a common origin with those who emigrated east to become eventually American natives. The DNA content is often sidebars. Some of this is from her website, as to surnames linked to certain Atlantic Celtic families today. It's brief and I reckon this may change as the field advances rapidly. The bulk of the material is a popular summary of findings in many academic fields and the bibliography is comprehensive. It wears its learning lightly, but it may serve for scholars and the curious as a springboard to further research.
