"[...] Suddenly a qualm of nausea swept over me, my senses swam, my knees gave beneath me and I pitched headlong to the ground upon the very verge of the dizzy bluff. Instantly my brain cleared and there swept back across the threshold of my memory the vivid picture of the horrors of that ghostly Arizona cave; again, as on that far-gone night, my muscles refused to respond to my will and again, as though even here upon the banks of the placid Hudson, I could hear the awful moans and[...]".

Another travelogue-esque tale, this story answers the question: how does one top a story that takes place all across the surface of an alien world, involving intriguing cultures, strange beasts of burden and flying machines? Why, by having the sequel occur not only across the majority of the surface of the Red Planet, but beneath it, as well! Oh, and add water in the underground portions, lending an even deeper sense of the extraordinary to this desert-themed, Western-inspired novel! Classic. After being forced back to Earth while struggling to save his adopted home, John Carter spends many years yearning to return to the world where his wife and new family were trapped in harrowing danger. When at last he is able to return, he finds himself in the one place he is prohibited from returning to the world at large. Fortunately, one of his old friends happens to be in the same place and the two of them set about finding a way to escape from what is a literal and social prison. Certainly an interesting take on the Hero's Journey as returning from the dead. It also serves as a topical, tongue-in-cheek examination of social conditioning (race, socioeconomic status, religion, etc). Good science fiction, in this regard.Carter suffers much during his journey, and scours Barsoom from above and below. Of course, in the process, all manner of derring-do must be performed, and a number of frantic, evocative combat/fight scenes occur. While ERB is no Fritz Leiber in the prose department, the man is no slouch, either. "But my present business with him was of a different nature than that which requires any considerable abstract reasoning; it was to get my sword between his ribs, and this I succeeded in doing with the next few seconds, nor was I an instant too soon." Burroughs offers another such passage with, "But even the two best swords in a world of fighters can avail not for ever against overwhelming numbers of fierce and savage brutes that know not what defeat means until cold steel teaches their hearts no longer to beat, and so, step by step, we were forced back."At every turn, he is thwarted from finding his beloved, regardless of the courage he displays in the face of fear, his fortitude for pressing on when all seems lost or how many and powerful his friends who come to aid him. Lost miles beneath Barsoom, facing hordes of terrible monsters or new, savage cultures, made a prisoner in his own home for nearly a year, sentenced to death for committing the unspeakable heresy of simply landing in the wrong place at the wrong time, he weathers it all for love of friends and family. Even at the end of the novel, his patience and suffering are rewarded with... nothing. Heartbreaking while embedding a hook for the next chapter. Delicious. As Burroughs had noted earlier in the story, "The one whom all responsibility rests is apt to endure the most." Endure John Carter does, and no doubt will continue to do. In a way, it could remind one of "The Empire Strikes Back"; things begin poorly for the heroes, and regardless of how they struggle, fight or purely pursue a righteous cause, things only get worse. If "A Princess of Mars" was considered an entertaining read, it's sequel is at least every bit as enjoyable. A terrific merging of familiar characters and style mixes with just enough new characters, story and environs to offer a joyous escape during the reading. It might also prove to raise the bar, as far as expectations for sequels are concerned.
