Tolstoy Hates Shakespeare: and he proves why you should too By Austin Even though Tolstoy presents an amazing point about why Shakespeare shouldn't be placed in a position of adoration, I still love Shakespeare just the same. However, anyone who plans to seriously critique any work of Shakespeare for an English class or just for personal reasons- should really read this. Anytime you critique a work, you should see both sides and in this you're able to see a contrasting viewpoint of the "Shakespeare-is-perfection" common opinion.

I have been impressed by the word flows and I have enjoyed the straightforward plots. Reading Tolstoy's criticism has opened a new channel of thought about these plays. He makes very strong arguments for his views even if one does not agree with all of his basic premises. In total, this is an excellent essay.

It's often interesting to hear how someone experienced Shakespeare, then wandered off into their own ideas of what it meant to them about what they wanted it to mean. And how disappointed they sometimes were. When it's Tolstoy doing so, it's often compelling. Though wrong.
