"[...] II HETTY TAKES HEED It was evening when Hetty Torrance sat alone in a room of Mrs. Schuyler’s house at Hastings-on-the-Hudson. The room was pretty, though its adornment was garish and somewhat miscellaneous, consisting as it did of the trophies of Miss Schuyler’s European tour. A Parisian clock, rich in gilded scroll work to the verge of barbarity, contrasted with the artistic severity of one or two[...]".

EDUCATIONAL & SOMEWHAT SAD By thatrater If you're looking for something light and entertaining, this might not be the book for you; It is pretty socialist as well as being very outdated, but of that more later. Since it's hard for me to get an idea of what to expect from Harold Bindloss' books before starting to read them, I'll include a summary of THE CATTLE-BARON'S DAUGHTER here. My summary of A PRAIRIE COURTSHIP in my review of that book was much longer, but since I didn't get any helpful votes from it I don't feel bad about this one being so short.***SPOILERS AHEAD*** Hetty Torrance, the cattle baron's daughter, is Larry Grant's love interest, which, from the beginning, is no surprise to anybody but Hetty. As Hetty begins to realize it, though, she also has to watch as her world is torn apart. Larry Grant has just gone from being a cattle baron like Torrance to being a farmer, a betrayal in the cattle barons' world. Larry's unscrupulous rival for Hetty's affections, another cattle baron, uses Grant's "desertion" to drive a wedge between Torrance and Grant, making it necessary for Hetty to choose between Torrance and Grant.Larry Grant is the hero of this story; Hetty is just the girl who got caught up in the conflict. She eventually does what I think she should have done, but there is no perfectly happy choice to make. Sadder still is my belief that while farming was more for the greater good than being a cattle baron was--then, it eventually became more like being a cattle baron than Harold Bindloss is likely to have imagined. The one thing I'm glad about in terms of having read this book is that I believe it gave me a better understanding of a few of the issues of Harold Bindloss' times. I could probably get that from reading some history book, but hey, this was free and since Harold Bindloss had no obligation to represent real events he gave us a slant that no history book is likely ever to give us.
