0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A good story mostly on female relationships By wiigamer This book, published in 1914, is the fifth in the Grace Harlowe series. The first four books are about high school, and three of the characters continue on together to college. They are the hero, Grace Harlowe, who is athletic, but mostly excels at keeping everyone happy. Anne Pierson is the straight-A student and professional actress from a poor family. Miriam Nesbit is a reformed troublemaker. They go together to all all-girls college, and try to make as many friends, and help as many of their fellow students, as possible. Anne sympathizes with Ruth Denton, who is working her way through college. Miriam sympathizes with selfish J. Elfreda Briggs (destined to become a major character in the series). This book gives a nice picture of early 20th century college life. E.g., at the dances, boys are not allowed, so half the girls have to pretend to be boys for dancing. Major topics are rumors, playing tricks, etc. Character development is important, and done nicely. My negative on this is how the author treats bullying. Towards the beginning, a girl is hazed upon arrival, ruining her first day of school. She understandably reports the incident. However, the author continually states that the report is much worse than the hazing. I strongly disagree.
