11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Purple Prose Majesty By Smallchief Was there ever a more romantic title than "White Shadows in the South Seas?" The book sold like hotcakes in the early 1920s and a movie of it won an Oscar in 1928. I suspect, however, that a lot of the popularity of the book was due to photographs of undraped Polynesian women and hints of sexual delights. One of the female characters is named "Vanquished Often." This is pretty racy for 1921, the stuff that escapist dreams were made of after the horrors of World War I.Well, unfortunately, "White Shadows" while not a bad book is not a very good book either. It's about a visit the author made to the remote Marquesas Islands of the South Pacific. He meets a lot of bizarre characters and tells us of them at length -- and I have a feeling he told a few "stretchers" as Huck Finn would say. There's plenty of colorful descriptions of scenery that is in truth spectacular, and stories of some of the people who have visited the Marquesas, including Herman Melville and Paul Gauguin. O'Brien gives the reader a good dose of history and folklore.I've had "White Shadows" and its companion volume "Mystic Isles of the South Seas" on my bookshelf for about 40 years. The titles are too evocative and the books too romantic to throw away. The photographs are pretty decent too, although not as revealing as some of Marquesan women in "The National Geographic" of the same epoch. So, buy the books and look at the pictures, read a bit of the purple prose, and dream of an Island maid named Vanquished Often.Smallchief

A Great Read By Amazon Customer Not a travelogue, it is the account from a keen observer of humanity of an extended sojourn among the people of the Marquesas Islands and ultimately his reflections on the devastations among the population resulting from the culture shock of encounter with Western civilization. Brief quotation from his reflections: “…changes in the customs of every race must come from within that race or they will destroy it. The essence of life is freedom.”

The Second Fiddle By Grammar To Go This book really reminds me that social recognition of the place of women in society has come a long way, but not far enough. The idea that a woman can make her place in the world without the benefit of social programs or some incredible helping hand also made the book interesting. It was not a fantastic read, but it was not bad.

I bet many times I have past by such plants that not only would bring my hole body nutrients and energy, but also could cure by body, mind and soul. The first guide talks about common plants which have all sorts of effects over you. Complementary to the first book, comes the second one, which teaches you some great tips on how to survive in nature, regarding shelter, protection, equipment needed, curing injuries, how to find food and water. Don’t hesitate! Take this book into nature with you and begin to learn the plant species directly and maybe you’ll even be curious the take a trip into the wild and survive on your own for a week or so!

By dave greene This bundle sucks , Its supposed to be two books on Bushcraft and foraging ,but its dominated by this third book or bonus or whatever it is on mindset or philosophy. Its hard to navigate between the books, I keep ending up on this third book. None of the other reviews mention this so I was wondering if it was a mistake or a fluke . this bonus has more content than what I ordered . All this stare at a tree and hug yourself crap does is take up space on my kindle, I can't delete the one without deleting everything . So I deleted it all .

You can find tools and equipment that perhaps will help you to survive in the wilderness. And necessarily read about first aid twice or more. In can be helpful not only in wilderness, but in your usual life.Second book teachs us about wild edible plants and medicinal herbs. There are good informative pictures in tis book.

About the Author John Milton was a seventeenth-century English poet, polemicist, and civil servant in the government of Oliver Cromwell. Among Milton s best-known works are the classic epic Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, considered one of the greatest accomplishments in English blank verse, and Samson Agonistes.

Writing during a period of tremendous religious and political change, Milton s theology and politics were considered radical under King Charles I, found acceptance during the Commonwealth period, and were again out of fashion after the Restoration, when his literary reputation became a subject for debate due to his unrepentant republicanism. T.S. Eliot remarked that Milton s poetry was the hardest to reflect upon without one s own political and theological beliefs intruding.

Greatest Epic Poem in English, Norton Edition is Outstanding By Michael Wischmeyer Paradise Lost was not part of my core curriculum in science and mathematics. I was of course aware that scholars considered it a great work, a classic. But it seemed a bit daunting - long, difficult, dated, and possibly no longer relevant.A few years ago I made two fortunate decisions. I elected to read Milton's Paradise Lost and I bought the Norton Critical Edition (edited by Scott Elledge). I read and reread Paradise Lost over a period of three months as well as the 300 pages of the Norton critical commentary. I was stunned by the beauty and power of Milton. Why had I waited so long to even approach such a literary masterpiece?Make no mistake. I had been right in several ways. Paradise Lost is difficult, it is long, and full appreciation requires an understanding of the historical and religious context. But Paradise Lost is a remarkable achievement. It explores questions regarding man and God that are as relevant today as in the 17th century. And the genius of Milton has never been surpassed.I found the Norton footnotes extremely helpful - definitions for rare or archaic words and expressions, explanations of the historical context, and links to the critical commentary section. The footnotes are at the page bottom, making them readily accessible.The Norton biographical, historical, and literary commentaries were fascinating in their own right. I may well as spent as many hours reading commentary as with Paradise Lost itself.John Milton led a remarkable life. His enthusiastic euology on Shakespeare was included in the second folio edition of Shakespeare in 1632. This was Milton's first public appearance as an author! While traveling as a young man he "found and visited" the great Galileo, old and blind, a house prisoner of the Inquisition for his astronomical heresy. Years later Milton, a close supporter of Cromwell, barely escaped the scaffold at the Restoration and was at risk for some period afterwards. Many considered Milton no more than an outcast, now old and blind himself, a republican and regicide who had escaped death by too much clemency. Within a few years this aging blind outcast created one of the masterpieces of the English language.Milton broke all English tradition by writing Paradise Lost in blank verse. Homer in Greek and Vergil in Latin had used blank verse, but English demanded rhyme. Although others failed to imitate Milton's blank verse (I suspect that none wanted to be compared directly with genius), the praise was without exception. Dryden, a master of rhyme, is attributed with saying, "This man cuts us all out, and the ancients too".Milton's characterization of Satan, Adam, Eve, the archangels Raphael, Michael, and Gabriel, and even God himself are masterful. The debates and arguments that evolve around free will, obedience, forbidden knowledge, love, evil, and guilt are timeless. And fascinating. And thought provoking.Paradise Lost will require commitment and patience and thought. The commitment in time is substantial. (I enjoy Samuel Johnson's subtle comment: "None ever wished it longer than it is.") But the return is a personal experience with great literature, one of the masterpieces of the English language. I consider myself fortunate to have made such an investment.

172 of 180 people found the following review helpful. Possibly the Best Edition Out There By Nick I have read "Paradise Lost" four times, and took no less than three semesters on it at university. This was the edition we used to work. Modernised spelling, coherent punctuation (plus variations of it in the notes), good introduction, and enormous work in the notes; this edition has all you need for a good reading of the epic poem.As to the poem itself, some people are hard on it for all the wrong reasons. Remember that it is a 17th century poem, that English was not exactly similar as it is today, and that there are many, many words which were first used in English in "Paradise Lost". Milton was innovative with words, and he gave English new words, and expressions, such as the most famous "all Hell broke loose", which was first uttered in "Paradise Lost".A poem like this cannot be read without good notes, and this is what this edition has to offer. Notes aren't enough, though, they have to be good, and in this edition, they are. The poem itself is not burdened by the numbers of the notes, because there are so many, the editor decided not to show them in the text per se, but at the end of the book, you will always have the reference, the lines, which the notes are about.As to the poem itself, if you don't know it, you certainly know of the story of the Fall of Man, Adam and Eve, and the rebellion of Satan in Heaven. I'll only say that Milton's God is one seriously problematic figure in the poem, and that it caused centuries of academic discussion as to whether Milton's God is a good God or a devilish one, whether "Paradise Lost" was truly a "myth", in the old sense of a story which explains why we're here and how it got to be, or whether it was an attack on Christianity. Scholars still discuss this today, so make your own mind if you can!

An excellently annotated version By Shane Cappuccio When John Milton set out to write Paradise Lost, he had every intention of writing a masterpiece of the English language. He felt he was destined for greatness, and his creation does not disappoint. With over 9000 lines of some of the greatest poetry every written, Milton does an incredible job of using classical and biblical allusions within a classical format to create a surprisingly modern and incredibly poignant look at the nature of God and man. Add on to this the fact that he was blind when he composed it, and you cannot call PL anything less than a work of genius.What separates this version from all the others available? The incredibly detailed work of the editors. The annotations of this edition are absolutely fantastic. They are plentiful (sometimes taking up as much as half a page), extremely informative, and surprisingly fun to read. Most annotated works such as this merely clarify antiquated vocabulary, but in this case the editors point out classical allusions, references to current events, and references to Milton's prose works. In addition to the prose and poetry associated with the text, the editors routinely mention the critical discourse (of which there is an unholy amount) associated with Milton. There are even moments where I laughed out loud at their comments. There is also a subtle touch to the annotations, in that there is no indication of annotations within the line. What I mean by this is that there are no bubbles or footnote marks in the body of the poem. The annotations at the bottom of the page simply point to a line number. This allows the reader to ignore the annotations if they choose to do so.Another nice characteristic of this edition is the artwork and illustrations included. There's some really fantastic stuff in there.All in all, this is an excellent edition of an excellent poem.

Gordon Edgar loves cheese and worker-owned co-ops, and has been combining both of these infatuations as the cheese buyer for San Francisco’s Rainbow Grocery Cooperative since 1994. Edgar has been a judge at numerous national cheese competitions, a board member for the California Artisan Cheese Guild, and has had a blog since 2002, which can be found at www.gordonzola.net. Edgar is the author of Cheesemonger: A Life on the Wedge (Chelsea Green 2010) and he enjoys mold in the right places, good cheese stink, and washing his hands upwards of one hundred times a day.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. So Great Even my Husband Read it! By Cheesalady I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy of Cheddar and loved everything about this book. I frequently laughed aloud thanks to the witty humor (including in the footnotes, so don't skip those!) and adored Gordon's easy to read style. This book is most certainly about much more than "cheddar cheese", it is about our food culture and how we as consumers shape our agricultural landscape; how our preconceptions and misconceptions influence our behavior; and hints at possibilities for the future of artisan cheese and cheesemakers. Gordon isn't lecturing us, he is inspiring us. This book is so good, that my husband who usually restricts himself to reading equipment catalogs, Nat Geo, and the ag newspaper also loved it!

With every glance, bite, or thought of cheddar, I've grown more impatient for Gordon Edgar's follow up to his classic debut: Cheesemonger, A life on the Wedge. Now that Cheddar is here, I couldn't even wait til I finished the book to write a review. It's stellar!

I knew I wanted to read this book as soon as I saw his name, I learned a lot about cheese and had a good time laughing at the authors humor in that first book. I tried many a cheese I never would have touched before reading CheeseMonger. This new book Cheddar, is filled to the brim with everything you may or may not want to know about this simple cheese. He seems to come across more down to business in this new book, his humor tamped down a bit till he talks about cheese filler but I appreciated his growth as a writer. Again found myself at the store buying many types of cheese. Enjoyed the book and would read from this author again.

About the Author Emerson Hough (1857-1923) taught school before studying law at the University of Iowa, graduating in 1880. Hough was admitted to the bar in 1882 and practiced law at White Oaks, New Mexico, but found it had no appeal for him. He turned to a literary career by taking camping trips and writing about them for publication. His body of work eventually included 27 novels and hundreds of short stories and articles.

Hough's early works included "The Singing Mouse Stories," for children, in 1895 and the nonfiction "The Story of the Cowboy" in 1897. He had his first major success in 1902 with the novel "The Mississippi Bubble," which became a best-seller. "The Way of the West" followed the next year.

For Faith, Love, and Hope By Scrapple8 The historical novel 'The Mississippi Bubble' by Emerson Hough was well-received by the American reading public upon its release, ranking 4th in sales among all American novels that debuted in 1902. The book is a fictional account of the life of Scottish financier John Law, who reached his professional apex as the Controller General of Finances in France during the early 18th century. Law was appointed by Duc d'Orléans, the regent for King Louis XV, to implement his financial plan for the French economy, starting with the notes circulated by the public.Hough drew on a book by Charles Mackay called 'Memoirs of Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds' for his background knowledge of John Law and the Mississippi Bubble. The colorful portrait of John Law by Mackey forms the character used by Emerson Hough in 'The Mississippi Bubble.' Both books - the Mackey book and Hough's novel - are available for free as e-books from Project Gutenberg.Readers who want to make up their own minds about John Law will be disappointed by reading this novel alone. Still, the novel has some merit. The story establishes a point of view sympathetic to Law, through fabricated events and a generous consideration of Law's policies. Hough suggests that the Duke of Orleans and his advisors, D'Argenson and Dubois, were the parties responsible for the Mississippi Bubble by their mismanagement of Law's plan.The biography of John Law on Wikipedia has no mention of Law visiting America. The events of Book 2 in the novel appear entirely invented - however, Hough offers some excellent writing in this part of the novel, describing the American frontier from the viewpoint of one with a wealth of background knowledge of life on the frontier.Some may take exception to Hough's characterizations of 'hook-nosed Jews,' but such were the times. People make similar charges of Booth Tarkington, for his novels don't survive today's tests of political correctness. If those sorts of things bother you, then don't read the book.The subprime mortgage meltdown of 2008 brought the topic of investment bubbles back into public consciousness. The original version of this book was published in the wake of the 1901 stock market bubble, created when Edward Harriman and associates of J. Pierpont Morgan bid up the price of Northern Pacific stock.For a time, the Mackay book was discredited as too sensationalist for serious scholarship, which invariably tricked down to novels that relied on Mackay's narrative, such as The Mississippi Bubble. Historians have revised their opinion about Mackay, but The Mississippi Bubble by Emerson Hough remains largely forgotten today. Even the Wikipedia entry about The Mississippi Bubble, which discusses the Mackay book, has no mention of this novel by Hough.No topic has been written about like the American West, so invariably some of the famous, earlier scribes have been replaced by more modern voices. Emerson Hough is an underrated chronicler of the American West, and his novels and historical works deserve a second look. With The Mississippi Bubble available for free on PG, maybe scholars can take a second look on this novel. I enjoyed reading the novel.This review is based on the original version of The Mississippi Bubble published in April 1902 by the Bowen-Merrill Company of Indianapolis, IN. There was a version of this book available for free from Project Gutenberg that had about thirty minor errors and variances with the paper version of the book. Those errors have recently been corrected by Project Gutenberg. The only real difference between the e-book from PG and the paper book, besides the medium, is the picture in the paper copy of the novel in Book 3, Chapter 4 is missing from the e-book from PG. The free version of the book from Amazon is not updated with the latest batch of corrections that have been installed by PG.

Any non-fiction book about Law's Mississippi Scheme would likely be more informative and more interesting.

Lone I got this book for my daughter who loves baking and loves to watch cake decorating shows. I was thrilled to see modeling material made of chocolate and not just sugar. I was a bit hesitant about the book being paperback and not hardcover, but the pages are good quality and the images are beautiful...great value for the money. The book gives good instructions and illustrations and is easy to follow along. Can't wait to see one of the projects come to life in our kitchen.

By Cathy Wilson This Gluten Free Life guide is a practical book that first talks a little about what gluten is and then jumps into delicious recipes for you to test out. The author writes in smooth informational tone stat to finish. I do wish there was some sourcing to add credibility.The recipes are creative and easy to follow. For me the nutritional information would have been a nice touch but not essential.Lots to learn in the introductory book and I recommend you buy it and let the author know what you liked best!

Great Introduction By yy Was doing research into gluten free diet and how different it would be as compared to my usual diet after stumbling upon this term from a friend.I had assumed that Gluten was only present in bread and other wheat products, but author pointed out that gluten could also be used as a 'binder' in some food. this is an interesting point that I will get my friend to take note in the future.On a side note, the mexican omelet and roasted salmon recipes sound pretty enticing!

Now I know why I've been suffering from constipation and always feel bloated because of eating different kinds of bread. I love to eat bread but now I want to omit eating food that have gluten and opted for gluten free. I want to live healthy and try this diet plan found on this book. Thank you for this wonderful book and for opening my eyes about GLUTEN.
