The human propensity to take an ethical stance toward oneself and others is found in every known society, yet we also know that values taken for granted in one society can contradict those in another. Does ethical life arise from human nature itself? Is it a universal human trait? Or is it a product of one's cultural and historical context? Webb Keane offers a new approach to the empirical study of ethical life that reconciles these questions, showing how ethics arise at the intersection of human biology and social dynamics.

Drawing on the latest findings in psychology, conversational interaction, ethnography, and history, Ethical Life takes readers from inner city America to Samoa and the Inuit Arctic to reveal how we are creatures of our biology as well as our history--and how our ethical lives are contingent on both. Keane looks at Melanesian theories of mind and the training of Buddhist monks, and discusses important social causes such as the British abolitionist movement and American feminism. He explores how styles of child rearing, notions of the person, and moral codes in different communities elaborate on certain basic human tendencies while suppressing or ignoring others.

Certain to provoke debate, Ethical Life presents an entirely new way of thinking about ethics, morals, and the factors that shape them.

From the Back Cover

"A treasure trove of richly stimulating ideas."--Kwame Anthony Appiah, author of Experiments in Ethics

"At last, an account of ethical life that is as rich and many layered as ethical life itself. Webb Keane takes us from its instinctual beginnings, through the elaboration of moral notions in everyday interaction, to the broader field of conscious ethical change in history. Every chapter is full of reflection-provoking insights, based on extensive research in a number of fields. This book is a game changer."--Charles Taylor, author of A Secular Age

"Webb Keane has provided us with an exceptionally broad and nuanced account of the natural and social histories of human ethical conduct. Unlike almost any other, the account is balanced between both cultural universals and cultural variability in the creation of human ethical life. This book is a must-read for everyone interested in the evolution of human sociality."--Michael Tomasello, author of A Natural History of Human Morality

"Ethical Life is a brilliant synthesis of the major issues in moral theory and the anthropology of ethics. Keane masterfully provides us with a model of interdisciplinary engagement--insightful, measured, world aware, and sensitive to the different shades of argument he engages. This book is an outstanding contribution to our understanding of our lives as ethical beings."--Veena Das, author of Affliction: Health, Disease, Poverty

"With Ethical Life, Webb Keane confirms his place as one of anthropology's most gifted thinkers. The scope of this book is phenomenal, ranging over a host of disciplines and debates with erudition. Ethical Life provides a new model for what bold anthropology can achieve, bringing us back to the difficult question of how to understand the natural and social histories of humankind--a question that many of us have simply been too timid to ask."--Matthew Engelke, London School of Economics

"This ambitious book synthesizes perspectives from anthropology, psychology, philosophy, and history, putting forward with impressive force and clarity a distinctive and persuasive argument. Ethical Life is a work of considerable scholarship and original thought."--James Laidlaw, author of The Subject of Virtue: An Anthropology of Ethics and Freedom

About the Author Webb Keane is the George Herbert Mead Collegiate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Michigan. He is the author of Christian Moderns: Freedom and Fetish in the Mission Encounter and Signs of Recognition: Powers and Hazards of Representation in an Indonesian Society.

#1 New York Times bestseller and USA Today bestseller The more we know about the animals in our world and the better we care for them, the better our lives will be. Former veterinary technician and animal advocate Tracey Stewart understands this better than most—and she’s on a mission to change how we interact with animals. Through hundreds of charming illustrations, a few homemade projects, and her humorous, knowledgeable voice, Stewart provides insight into the secret lives of animals and the kindest ways to live with and alongside them. At home, she shows readers how to speak “dog-ese” and “cat-ese” and how to “virtually adopt” an animal. In the backyard, we learn about building bee houses, dealing nicely with pesky moles, and creative ways to bird-watch. And on the farm, Stewart teaches us what we can do to help all farm animals lead a better life (and reveals pigs’ superpowers!). Part practical guide, part memoir of her life with animals, and part testament to the power of giving back, Do Unto Animals is a gift for animal lovers of all stripes.

Do Unto Animals: A Friendly Guide to How Animals Live, and How We Can Make Their Lives Better, by Tracey Stewart

Review “Do Unto Animals is delightful, entertaining, and hugely important. Tracey’s love for animals has led to a profound understanding of their world, and it becomes clear that the better we know this world, the better their lives will be. And this, in turn, will make our own lives more fulfilling. It is the perfect gift for all who love animals. And for those who should love them better.”—Jane Goodall, PhD, DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, and UN Messenger of Peace “Charming. . . . A memoir and how-to about enriching the world of the creatures in your life, whether they be dogs, cats, or the crows in your backyard. . . . The book details basic animal behavior as well as practical humane solutions to common animal-human conflicts (cats scratching furniture, moles destroying your lawn). It also has craft projects for those of us with great intentions and no skills.” —New York Times “A guide to understanding animals and treating them with respect. . . . While the book is about loving and caring for animals, it also follows Tracey’s path to happiness through animals.” —Gayle King on CBS This Morning “Stewart has a heart as big as all outdoors, which is helpful since her caring largesse extends to moles and squirrels, goats and sheep, as well as the more-commonplace cats and dogs. A lifelong animal lover and one-time veterinary technician, Stewart evinces a genuine empathy for all creatures, from the lowliest frog to the loftiest owl, and winsomely guides other animal enthusiasts in their desire to develop a more rewarding relationship with man’s best friend, whatever that turns out to be. An ardent proponent for the adoption of rescue animals, Stewart broadens that philosophy to include sanctuaries for farm animals as well. Married to former host of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart, who announced their plan to create just such a haven for at-risk animals, Stewart is on a mission far above the typical, nominal celebrity cause du jour. Rich in informed insights on animal behavior, augmented by creative craft projects, and alluring with clever watercolor illustrations, Stewart’s passionate and practical guide to living with domestic pets, backyard critters, and farm animals artfully combines sensible advice with grassroots advocacy. Stewart’s zeal for animal welfare is infectious and sincere, and her desire to create a kinder world for animals and humans is earnest and essential.”—Booklist, starred review “A one-of-a-kind mix of info, advice, philosophy and hands-on activities.” —Philadelphia Daily News   “Gives readers not only facts and advice, but also smart and caring ways to improve animals’ existences.” —Chicago Tribune   “With humor and grace, this beautiful and inspiring book helps us to understand and appreciate animals and encourages us to treat them with compassion and respect . . . How we treat other animals is a reflection of who we are, and this wonderful book helps us to be kinder, better people.”—Gene Baur, co-founder and president, Farm Sanctuary   “This book is a dazzling confluence of art, heart, and animal welfare information. Informative, thought-provoking, and charming, Do Unto Animals is a gentle call to action for animal lovers of all ages that fully embodies Stewart’s vital message: If we all do a little better, a lot of good is possible.”—Susan Friedman, PhD, Behaviorworks.org    “I love this book. Superbly illustrated, beautifully written, and with a profound message that everyone needs to hear. Do Unto Animals has an entertaining, instructional, and compassionate message about the animals with whom we live and share this planet. From dogs and cats to birds and horses (even earthworms and bees), the story of life and living together is skillfully woven into the finely illustrated tapestry of this missive. With lighthearted humor and heartfelt sincerity, Tracey Stewart tell it the way it is—or rather the way it should be—when it comes to our understanding and interactions with animals. Two paws up (or feet, hooves, or talons)!”—Dr. Nicholas H. Dodman, director of the Animal Behavior Clinic at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University

About the Author Tracey Stewart is the editor-in-chief of the website Moomah, which provides parents and kids with fun, easy, and effective ways to contribute to varying kinds of nonprofits. A passionate animal advocate and expert (she’s a former veterinary technician), she lives on a farm in New Jersey with her husband, Jon Stewart; two kids; four dogs; two pigs; one hamster; three rabbits; two guinea pigs; one parrot; and two fish—all rescues except for the kids.

By Denise DeSerio First of all, this book is beautifully illustrated; the art and even the font choice remind me of books I had growing up in the 60s and 70s. Next, it is a wonderful, "friendly" book informing people on how to interact with animals(pets, wildlife, and "farmed" animals) and make their lives better. There are no gory photographs (no photos at all, actually) and it's not "preachy". Yet it tackles a wide range of topics: from why you should not crop/dock/declaw to how to interact with a cow. It also has craft ideas: how to sew a dog bed, make your own dog tug toys & dog biscuits, how to grow a pollinator garden. As well as other tips: what to do when you find injured wildlife, how to massage your dog and/or cat, how to grow cat grass. There are also excerpts that offer glimpses into the Stewart household. One sweet anecdote tells about how they make "foster charm bracelets" with photos of the animals they've fostered over the years, adding new pictures with each foster animal. I highly recommend this book for anyone (or as a gift for someone in your life) who wants to learn more about animals and how to do well by them, (without having to worry about graphic pictures or strident lectures).

By Jackie Demeri Costello author of Animooves: Yoga & Creativity Inspired by Animals I just received this long-anticipated book today and it is wonderful! I could not put it down! It is filled with wonderful activities, crafts, and interesting and useful information about many of our animal friends and their deeply sentient lives. The illustrations are beautiful and capture the warm and caring spirit of the book. This is truly a friendly and empowering guide. Highly recommended!

Amazing guide to the basic love and care of animals By Mary Gramlich The one constant in life is the love an animal can provide you if you allow it into your heart and life. It is a privilege to be a pet owner but it is something that comes with great responsibility that should not be taken without thought and a correlation of what is right for the animal as well as for yourself. This book is a basic guide to animal selection, care, love, and protection with stunning illustrations that leap from the page.Finding the right pet is not as uncomplicated as one might assume and when you do find your forever friend the most important action for the rest of their life is proper care and maintenance. You may know the basics but this book provides the depth of how to provide a loving and efficient home that is geared toward the pet you have chosen. This book is also a reminder that all of the creatures roaming this earth have a purpose and it is our responsibility to respect every single one of them regardless of whether they are appealing to us or not.

In What Did Jesus Ask?, more than 70 of today's most prominent spiritual writers, religious leaders and artists offer modern meditations on the questions Jesus asks in the Bible. Their contemplations provide telling context, with both contemporary and traditional interpretations to lead readers on an exploration of their own faith and to shape their own meaningful answers. As a teacher, Jesus Christ put many of his lessons in the form of questions. The gospels recorded some 100 others. Some are rhetorical, needing no answer, but most were real questions posed to real people. Many of Jesus' questions are familiar to readers today, yet the context and the potential interpretations of such phrases will offer enlightenment to many. Organized by Biblical verse, these enigmatic questions include: "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" - Matthew 8:26 "Why do you call me good?" - Mark 10:18"Does this offend you?" - John 6:16 Contributors include bestselling singer/songwriters Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith, Christian leaders Barbara Taylor and Cardinal Wuerl of Washington, and bestselling authors James Martin and Sarah Young, and many more. Including a foreword by Nancy Gibbs, bestselling author and managing editor of TIME magazine, What Did Jesus Ask? is a thought-provoking volume for both readers interested in religious thought and understanding the teachings of Jesus better.

A Diverse Group of Christians By scesq This is fascinating book where Christians from all denominations each share there understanding of a different question asked by Jesus in one of the four gospels. It was fascinating and thought provoking to read what many of the different Christians had to say. My only quibble is that I do think this book has a broad interpretation of the term “Christian leader.” I wish the title had called the Christians in this book notable Christians rather than “Christian leaders.”When I think of Christian leaders I think of Christians who lead churches or nuns or priests who lead orders or Christian theologians whose works influence Christian thought or Christian academics at seminaries or theology schools. The Christian leaders listed in this book include authors, actors, singers, clergy and academics. Roma Downey, Lecrae, Mark Burnett and Amy Grant are examples of artists who I would not consider Christian leaders. There are modern Christian authors listed who I would not consider Christian leaders because I don’t believe writing about Christian subjects makes a person a Christian leader.I did enjoy reading much of what was in this book. Roma Downey, Lecrae, Mark Burnett and Amy Grant all had interesting things to say. Some people focused on personal stories to explain what Jesus had to say while other had a broader theological explanation. I found something interesting in what everyone had to say.The first question explored is “If you love those who love you, what reward will you get?” (Matthew 5:46-47.) The question is explored by Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby. Archbishop Welby is my idea of a Christian leader. I found what he had to say thought provoking. Others like Gene Robinson a retired Episcopal Bishop, Cardinal Timothy Dolan the Roman Catholic Archbishop of New York and Charles Chaput the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Philadelphia fall into what I would consider Christian leaders. Most of meditations in this book are three to four pages. All are worth reading. Some are insightful and thought provoking while others are just interesting and worthy of thinking about.I like the diversity of people in this book. Christian denominations seem to be well represented. As a Catholic I found it interesting reading what other Christians had to say knowing that Catholics were included in this book.I really like this book. I like the diversity of those included in this book. I would not consider all of them Christian leaders but rather notable Christians.

This book, in a nutshell, is trying to be too many things to too many (Christian) people. At least that's how I see it. Basically, it's a diverse set of (Christian) authors who try to respond to Jesus's questions. If you are looking for theological analyses, then this is NOT the book for you. While I "get" what this is trying to do – show different responses and points of views, I think it lost some focus by maybe being too broad in (Christian) points of view. By "too broad in points of view," I mean I found a lot of the responses focused more on the responder and his/her own personal agenda than a real consideration of what was being asked in the larger sense. In other words, most of this seemed to lack the focus and the reflection the questions deserved. What might have made this more interesting would have been to maybe include non-Christian perspectives, which perhaps could have enlightened the discussion with more objective interpretations. While some of the authors provided interesting viewpoints, most of this read like personal agendas and the promotion of their affiliations.Okay but did not really hold my attention in the way I would have hoped.

Curnutt This is an interesting collection of short essay's from 65 authors. Elizabeth Dias, the Religion Writer for Time, was the one who put this collection of writings together. I did enjoy the collection and was brought to a stop many a time to think through the essay that I was reading. Each writer took a different question that Jesus asked and wrote a short devotional thought.Jesus was a master at asking questions. He found that one of the greatest teaching tools was to ask questions. When someone prompted him with a thought, he often came back with a question. He would often then tell a parable or have further dialogue with the person. Through his questions, his parables and the individuals response we learn much about how God wants us to live in this world. So, since I enjoyed the book you might ask why I only gave it four stars. Well, to be honest I was a little bothered by some of those whose essays were chosen. It is obvious that the TIME's has a different concept of "Christian" than my conservative mind has. But to be fair to them they did state that those whom they used were people who 'personally professed' to be Christians. They did not stop to define that term by a conservatives viewpoint.I hope you enjoy the book, there are many others also out there that address the same topic, you would be able to do a very thorough study by searching through some of these other books.Enjoy!

‘Wuthering Heights' by Emily Bronte

Wuthering Heights is Emily Brontë's only novel. Written between October 1845 and June 1846,Wuthering Heights was published in 1847 under the pseudonym ″EllisBell″; Brontë died the following year, aged 30. Wuthering Heights is the name of the Yorkshire farmhouse where the story unfolds. The book's core theme is the destructive effect of jealousy and vengefulness both on the jealous or vengeful individuals and on their communities. Thirty years earlier, Wuthering Heights is occupied by Mr Earnshaw, his teenage son Hindley and his daughter Catherine. On a trip to Liverpool, Earnshaw encounters a homeless boy described as "dark-skinned gypsy in aspect". He adopts the boy and names him Heathcliff. Hindley feels that Heathcliff has supplanted him in his father's affections and becomes bitterly jealous. Catherine and Heathcliff become friends and spend hours each day playing on the moors. They grow close.

From Publishers Weekly The main drama in Bronte's novel happens in a long narrative told by an elderly housekeeper to a convalescing new tenant. This story-within-a-story setup makes it well suited for audio adaptation, as Scales takes the housekeeper's part and relates the past, while West performs as the tenant and describes the present. Scales primarily uses a folksy lower-class accent, but she also makes her voice harsh and threatening when speaking as Heathcliff, the surly man at the novel's heart. West, as the bewildered tenant, manages to sound both nervous and pretentious, but his part is fairly small, especially with this abridgment, so he mostly serves to provide transitions for the housekeeper's story. The extensive abridgment generally deletes sentences and phrases rather than entire paragraphs or sections. One drawback for the audio format is the difficulty of clarifying the novel's convoluted plot and family tree, since it's harder to search back through long CD tracks than through earlier chapters of the paperback. While a little of the depth of Bronte's writing is lost in abridgment, the novel's emotional core remains intact and wrenching, and the actors' heartfelt interpretations make it easy to imagine being curled up by a warm fire listening to an absorbing tale. In June, Penguin Audio remastered and released on CD for the first time nine other Penguin Classics: Crime and Punishment, Dracula, Frankenstein, Great Expectations, Jane Eyre, Moby Dick, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and Tale of Two Cities. From School Library Journal Grade 7 Up—This audio version of Emily Bronte's classic is narrated by Ann Flosnik. Initially, her narration makes it difficult to distinguish between characters, but as the tale progresses, her vocal characterizations become more dramatic and unique for each character, drawing listeners deeper and deeper into this dark and brooding love story. The first disk of the set also contains a PDF ebook of the full text of the novel which can be downloaded. Some students will want to read along with the narrated version, while others can use the ebook as a reference tool for class assignments. A nice addition to classic literature collections and a good way to enhance the English curriculum.—Anita Lawson, Otsego High School, Otsego, MI Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Review "It is as if Emily Brontë could tear up all that we know human beings by, and fill these unrecognizable transparencies with such a gust of life that theytranscend reality."--Virginia Woolf

Bronte was simply a genius and a harbinger of romantic, dramatic, gothic, and horror writing. (However, it still irks me that she couldn't end a simple sentence with a period. Every declarative statement, it seems, must be qualified with a colon or semi-colon. Oh well. Sign of the times.)As for the Norton edition, it's the only one to buy. Bronte makes the assumption that you have read the Bible cover-to-cover a zillion times, and for those of us who have not read it through once, Norton's annotations are more than helpful---they're essential to understanding the novel's Christian allusions. This edition also provides the reader with critical essays, contexts of Bronte's life, Bronte's reactions to critics of her day, etc.Bottom line: you can get the Dover Thrift edition for a couple bucks, but, if you are interested in giving this classic more than a cursory read, this edition is worth the extra money.

205 of 230 people found the following review helpful. wuthering heights editions By Jordi Vilalta Lopez Rather than delve on the contents of this strangest and strongest of English novels, so intensely poetic in its haunting darkness and otherness, I'll comment briefly on the best editions available for a good first contact:A) Text oriented editions (that is, editions with few materials added: normally an Introduction, annotation, and perhaps Charlotte's Peface and Biographical Notice and some bibliographical indications).1. Oxford World's Classics: authoritative text, good annotation, excellent introduction.2. Penguin's Classics: same as above, everything looks a little shorter but is excellent nonetheless.3. Wordsworth Classics edition. This would be a rather fine edition as befitting this collection, if it had a good 1847 text and not the heavily tampered-with Charlotte's 1850 edition. The text itself reflects accurately that of the 1900 Haworth Edition -a careful one-. The wording changes aren't perhaps so worrying nor is the toning-down of the dialectal tirades -although funny and useless-. What is worrying is the disappearance of more than six hundred paragrapph entries (I mean just the paragraphing, not the contents itself!), that makes for a different -and worse- reading experience. Very good and full -if brief- annotation. Mass-market, glued paperback.4. Heather Glen's for Routledge. One of the finest text-oriented editions, especially for the excellent Introduction and Epilogue together with its good annotation, out-of-print for rather obscure reasons. If you find still a very good to fine copy at amazon Canadian branch (or at abebooks.com, it would be a good buy.5. Orchises two-volume facsimile reprint of the 1847 edition. No notes nor any additional material. the books are well produced if a little expensive. Very interesting item, but only suitable for textual scholars or would-be scholars, or otherwise for fetish-oriented WH-maniacs.B) Study-oriented editions (i.e. editions that contain additional contextual information: early reviews, selection of Emily's poems, critical essays, chronologies of the novel or of the Bronte family...).6. Norton's Fourth Edition (current item): OK, the text is still a little idiosyncratic, but the notes are much improved, and so is everything else (with the anthology of poems, and the critical essays). A very fine study edition but also suitable for a first contact, although annotation is still on the scarce side. Good paperback production without flaps but signature-sewn (or so it seems) and good paper and printing quality (albeit with a rather small type).7. Broadview edition by Beth Newman: it's one of the best study editions overall. There are some minor textual foibles and the annotation is decidedly scanty (to make amends for Heywood excesses) but good and accurate, and both Prof. Newman ecellent Introduction and the selection of the additional contextual material is, arguably, the finest ever (including the very interesting document on "Brain fever"). Materially speaking, it is a good paperback without flaps with good paper and printing quality (like Norton Critical, although I can't ascertain without tearing apart my copy of Beth Newman's that it be signature-sewn instead of glue-only "perfect binding). In any case a very good buy.7. Alison Booth's for Longman Cultural. Other of the very best study editions available. The text is deadly acuurate -except for some 1850 unobtrusive detail- on theClarendon 1976 reference critical edition, although the punctuation -like Norton Critical, Broadview's Newman and Oneworld's one- has been silently lightened and modernized throughout. It looks like glue-only "perfect binding" paperback, but perhaps it is signature-sewn. Paper and printing quality are good enough. The only misgiving I have is the overdone fragmentation of contextual material (good and relevant material though it is): there are 40+ items, many of them very short or they wouldn't fit into 430 pages. One of the best possible buys.8. Onewold's Classics edition. A fine paperback edition with flaps, very good paper and printing quality and (I rather surmise than know for sure) signature-sewn. The text looks like 1847 in paragraphing but it takes in toomany of 1850 "improvements" and is wrong at some places: it's short of a disaster, but rather non-reliable (in spite of the well-meant efforts by the almost anonymous editing panel who perpetrated it). Annotation is good and comprehensive enough, but the contextual material is rather scanty and run-of-the-mill non-commital.9. Barnes&Noble's Tatiana Holway edition (hardcover). To say it promptly the only fault with this lovely edition (but, as stated above in wordsworth Classics edition, a really big fault) is its accurate and reliable 1850 Haworth Edition text. Other than this, it looks as a popularly oriented edition, but with quality marks. The Introduction by Daphne Merkin is good enough, the annotation by Holway is really excellent. Supplementary material is very scanty: the "Charlotte's prefatory materials" of 1850 (prefixed to the text, which is a pity), and some comments about film and TV adaptations as well as some chosen excerpts of reviews. Material production is outstanding: nice hardcover with dust jacket, good paper and printing quality, the only good available edition in a becoming format (Clarendon Edition is very hard to come by nowadays: say one to three years to pin it down). Don't forget the Franklin Mint editions of the sixties and seventies if you are interested in a very beautiful book with a reliable 1847 text and illustrations by Alan Reingold (and nothing else).

Well, if Jane Eyre was one of those long-forgotten books, pick up a copy. To read it as an adult is a joy: it's a sweeping, disturbing, intense, thrilling, very romantic gothic love story, written in the voice of a very intense, almost claustrophobically self-aware young heroine. Jane is no Ophelia - she's a complicated, remarkable character, and a very strong female character in a genre that usually draws women as beautiful victims at best. There's something for everyone in this book: Windswept castles, difficult and neurotic family members, dark secrets about tragic former lovers, good triumphing over evil, all that good juicy stuff that makes a great romantic story. What elevates Jane Eyre is Bronte's remarkable style & skill and her sharp and complex characterizations.Trust me on this: If you don't remember it from your teens, you should give it a try now. Here is one novel that more than lives up to it's 'classic' status.

The Original Grands Crus of Burgundy is a translation from works describing and classifying the vineyards of the Côte d’Or written prior to the establishment of today’s system of Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée in 1936 and a discussion of how they compare to the modern system. For centuries, a number of authors ranging from learned amateurs to experienced professionals weighed in with their thoughts. Translations from the most notable of these works form the backbone of the present work Claude Arnoux : Dissertation sur la situation de la Bourgogne, sur les vins qu’elle produit (1728) Claude Courtépée et Edme Béguillet : Description historique et topographique du Duché de Bourgogne (1778) André Jullien : Topographie de Tous les Vignobles Connus (1816) Dr. Denis Morelot : Statistique de la Vigne dans le Département de la Côte d’Or (1831) Dr. Jules Lavalle : Histoire et Statistique et des Grands Vins de la Côte d’Or (1855) René Danguy et Charles Aubertin : Les Grands Vins de Bourgogne (1892) Camille Rodier : Le Vin de Bourgogne (1920) More than a dusty history lesson, The Original Grands Crus of Burgundy provides a roadmap for the discovery of forgotten gems, hidden in plain sight. Crucial reading for all who love Burgundy.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Read While Drinking Burgundy By Timothy E Hall Burgundy’s modern classification began in the anti-fraud protectionist movement of the Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) system of the 1920s and 30s. Bordeaux’s five tier system for the top left bank properties had been codified in 1855 of course, but the rest of Bordeaux followed only later in a regional and disjointed way. Burgundy, whose wines date back 1500 years, had already a ‘custom and practice’ hierarchy of vineyard reputations, with often a well-discussed pecking order, long before the work of the INAO codified the region in 1936, alongside Bordeaux, the Rhône and Champagne. In Burgundy, the church developed the vineyards for centuries. It was the relative quality of wines from plots of land that drove the pecking order and the fragmentation of vineyard ownership after the French Revolution sealed that tradition. In Bordeaux, the Médoc was barely developed for wine until the Dutch engineers drained it in the mid 17th century. There was no plot by plot ‘terroir’. The new mercantalist class grew by building estates and their power increased after the Revolution of 1789. So in Bordeaux, chateaux were classified, not plots of land.Charles Curtis MW is a former head of Christie’s wine departments in both New York and Asia, now running WineAlpha.com, a global fine wine consultancy. His ‘The Original Grands Crus of Burgundy’, is a vinous labour of love, and gold dust for Burgundy lovers. It is painstaking historical scholarship and will help the shrewd buyer of burgundy today. It is required reading if you are a serious burgundy enthusiast and should take its place too in the canon of the literature of wine classification. Curtis has translated for the first time, sections of the key French works of reliable analysis, description and classification which came before the INAO and which, it is clear, the INAO largely rubber stamped. The sources are: Claude Arnoux (1728), Courtépée and Béguillet (1774-1781), André Jullien, already translated, (1815), Dr Denis Morelot (1831) and the most influential, Dr Jules Lavalle (1855). All of their works foreshadowed the modern tripartite division of grands and premiers crus and communal lieu-dits, although the older nomenclature uses ‘Tête de Cuvée’ for Grand Cru and then Première Cuvée, Deuxième Cuvée etc, for divisions below. This was a world where viti and viniculture were very different, where Burgundy’s planted area was over three times what it is now, but the yield vastly less and where Gamay was hugely more planted in with Pinot Noir. The biggest modern fall from reputational grace is the huge 50ha Clos de Vougeot, but it is easy to see why. It was a monopole until 1889 with all this means for selection and blending but now has 80+ owners. It is not uniformly grand cru potential but has kept its official status. This book also reminds us why Nuits has no modern day grands crus, when the above authorities all graded Les Saint-Georges just so. In fact the owners did not apply for ‘grand cru’ in 1935 as they thought they would be taxed more. In the opposite direction, the old authorities have been ignored by modern expansion which has inflated Corton to over 160ha in the 20th century, from some 20-30-odd before. There are always exceptions in Burgundy. Volnay of course was never given any grands crus, perhaps unfairly and controversially, with some of the above writers reticent on its claims, others more forthcoming. Curtis has a little more genuine enthusiasm about Volnay but would clip its wings too: “Wine lovers might be well-served by elevating Champans and Caillerets, while being a little more selective with the premiers crus vineyards in other instances.” But in general, while recommending the odd modern producer, Curtis is modest with his own opinion, preferring showing to telling. This wonderful cameo book is a reminder of what being a wine lover means: you need to travel, you need to see the vines. You need to taste, perhaps the least neglected part! But you also need to study, research and think. In some cases, translate. Curtis has done all that and it will make you want to do more.

It's certainly not for the casual wino because it contains a ton of detailed historical information. But it is a must read for any true Burgundy lover. The historical texts that are included in this book are extremely extremely interesting and they truly allow you to trace how people thought of the character of the different vineyards over the course of time.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Timely and Timeless By Dennis Sherman The Appellation Contrôlée system was instituted in Burgundy in 1936 to regulate the complex hierarchy of the vineyards there. However, for two centuries prior to this, a number of authors ranging from learned amateurs to experienced professionals produced, debated and refined their own systems of classification. Master of Wine Charles Curtis, in his new book The Original Grands Crus of Burgundy, translates from a number of these works and looks at how their classifications relate to the system we see in place today. For lovers of Burgundy, the wine and the region, it is a passionate read. As we await UNESCO's decision on Burgundy's World Heritage candidature, this book is both timely and timeless.

Fitch may be better known for his play "Captain Jinks of the Horse Marines" or "The Girl with the Green Eyes." This show ran on Broadway in 1901 for 163 performances and was revived again in 1904. It is dated by social & professional roles of women at the dawn of the 20th century, which were quite different than today's standards. The play initially caused controversy because the opening scene shows women who are grieving just after a funeral, a situation which had not reached Broadway previously. There are great opening clashes between the widow Mrs. Hunter and her sister-in-law Ruth. The action builds well from act to until the final curtain. The main issue involves an examination of ethics and the stockmarket as we find that Hunter went broke in a copper deal and his son-in-law Sterling who is an investment broker runs through family fortunes like water on one speculative deal after the next. By the final curtain when he finally overdoses, we almost stand and applaud his demise. The themes of ethics and investment still seemed relevant today. As we become increasingly familiar and care about the characters, we become more concerned for their financial well-being which goes down the tubes with Sterling's abuse of their investments.I've never heard of another revival of this show; so it is certainly ripe for modern theatrical production. I think it would play well as a serious selection in a season's bill. It is nice to have a fresh new edition of this golden gem from over a century ago. Enjoy!

Life isn't easy. Just ask American-born Phoebe Hawkins and British-born Lizbeth Bates, two insecure women in their mid-20s who are trying to stay positive in the face of their own awkwardness, chaos, and utter humiliation.

Friends for nearly 10 years, Phoebe and Liz are well aware that neither of their brains possesses a filter. After Liz moves from the UK to America, the two accidentally land jobs at an up-and-coming media company that is testing their very own version of a modern-day Dear Abby/Agony Aunt advice column.

Laughter, tears, and inappropriate behavior follow as the two desperately try to live up to their role as the American and the Brit.

There were so many parts that had me laughing out loud, and an inappropriate places. And parts had me holding my bladder.Phoebe is an American, living her life large.Phoebe in her own words ... "My brain has no filter, ruining me from ever living a politically correct life." And phoebe stumbles from disaster to disaster.Lizbeth is a stiff upper lipped Brit, her reserve doesn't deter her from being a great laugh. The references that both make to their heritages made me chuckle. So ..... Phoebe convinces Liz to move across the water, she gets her a job, she can crash with her, life will be sweet. But with phoebe, life has a habit of biting you in the butt. Not only does she lose her job, she manages to lose her friends job as well. (And Liz hadn't even started there yet)It's a rollercoaster of a ride. I haven't laughed that much reading in a long time. It's a great read. And I'm hoping for another adventure with phoebe and Liz.And I think Chocoholism should be a medical condition, in fact, i think I have itBring it on baby

By Muhammad Emdadul Haque This book gives you a wonderful overview of the Dash diet for vegans including the Dash diet guidelines for vegans, and tips for vegans. Then you have the recipes which include brunch and lunches, appetizers, main courses and desserts. The recipes are well written and the instructions are well detailed and easy to follow. I made the three bean and grape salad and the polenta with roasted Mediterranean vegetables. Both recipes were easy to make and delicious. I will certainly make more recipes from this cookbook. Highly recommended for anyone looking for healthy Dash diet vegan recipes or anyone looking for a healthy diet to follow.

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, by Ambrose Bierce

About the Author Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce was an American editorialist, journalist, short story writer, fabulist, and satirist. Today, he is probably best known for his short story "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" and his satirical lexicon The Devil's Dictionary. His vehemence as a critic, his motto "Nothing matters" and the sardonic view of human nature that informed his work all earned him the nickname "Bitter Bierce". Despite his reputation as a searing critic, Bierce was known to encourage younger writers, including poet George Sterling and fiction writer W. C. Morrow. Bierce employed a distinctive style of writing, especially in his stories. His style often embraces an abrupt beginning, dark imagery, vague references to time, limited descriptions, impossible events and the theme of war. In 1913, Bierce traveled to Mexico to gain first-hand experience of the Mexican Revolution. While traveling with rebel troops, he disappeared without a trace.

By Zou Zou Just Patty is a compilation of the adventures of Patty Wyatt and her best friends Connie Wilder and Priscilla. The book's publication date is 1911. The young ladies are in their Senior year at St. Ursula's boarding school. The novel opens with the three discovering that they will not be roommates. Each girl has been assigned a new and generally impossible roommate. The Latin Instructor, Miss Lord, has convinced the Principal, Mrs Trent, to separate the three mischievous friends. The girls plead to be re-united and returned to their former rooms in the West Wing (Paradise Alley). How they convince the Dowager to return them to Paradise Alley is ingenious and amusing. The girls' adventures continue from exposing a dubious fictitous romance created by the worldly Mae Mertelle to facilitating the romance of gymnasium teacher Miss Jellings and Mr Gilroy with a little judicious Gypsy fortune telling. It is amusing to read how the worth of a supposed Suitor is judged by his gifting a volume of Marie Correlli's Works. The girls' grousing on being required to attend Friday afternoon lectures on Woman's Rights is interesting when you realise that this book was published prior to the enactment of the 19th Amendment. These young women are aware of unions, strikes and the eight hour day. There is even a schoolgirl foray into the popular belief of spiritualism. Ghost parties and seances give rise to ectoplasmic mischief. This is a book of clever funny stories of young women at the beginning of the twentieth century. Recommended.

Jean Webster Amazes By Shirley Curtis Maybe this is an old title, almost historical, but it was so well written and interesting that you could easily see the events in Patty's life in your minds eye. Jean Webster was one of my mother's favorite writers, and having read another of her books out of curiousity, I had to read more. It's well worth it. Patty charms, tests, and changes you. A very good read.

By AnnaKayBook Full Review at my blog, Diamond&Coal Book Reviews:[...] When I downloaded this for my Kindle (it's free on Amazon as part of Project Gutenberg), I had already read Daddy Long-Legs and Dear Enemy. Jean Webster has a pretty sharp sense of humor and writes wonderfully relatable heroines, that put me in mind of L.M. Montgomery (only with some extra snarkiness, versus dreaminess) and her Anne series. I thought about reading When Patty Goes to College first since it was written before this one, but decided to go in chronological order by the actual setting of the book. I normally am not a huge fan of books told in short story/vignette form, but this one really was a pretty good book when it comes down to it. Patty is an absolute lightning rod for mischief and makes it a habit to deliberately misinterpret things that people say to her or instruct her to do - with mostly hilarious results. The other two girls are in the mischief with her, but Patty is most definitely the ringleader! There were some that were almost entirely humorous, like the incident where Patty and the girls strike for better/more equal treatment in Latin class, and the incident with one of the girls having a fake beau (boyfriend) to hurt another girl's feelings (Patty takes care of that one with some pretty funny antics). But there were also stories like the one where Patty is stuck at school for Christmas and decides to help a lonely and out of place student who feels abandoned have a meaningful holiday. Also, the incident with the prank where Patty accidentally encounters a real burglar and finds him a job when she goes trespassing on a grumpy, reclusive millionaire's property. Patty always means well, even when she's trying to get around doing things that she should (like studying to make up an exam that she misses). Overall I was impressed with this book and felt like the overall tone to it avoided the malicious spirit that books centered around pranks and boarding schools tend to have on occasion (whether by accident or design, things do move in that direction quite often). I am only sorry that Jean Webster died at such a young age, with so much potential to be a classic children's writer in the collective consciousness instead of nearly forgotten, as I feel she is in our present day. Also interesting to note is that Jean Webster was Mark Twain's grandniece. Who knows maybe his famous snark is some of the reason she manages mischief so admirably in her own novels! I highly recommend this one, especially for fans of classic books along the lines of Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, or the Betsy-Tacy series. My only real complaint is that I wish there were more to this book. It felt far too short, especially with the story Webster chose to end on.VERDICT: 4.5/5 Stars**No money or favors were exchanged for this review. This book is now available mostly in used bookstores, online, or maybe even at your local library.**
