Fitch may be better known for his play "Captain Jinks of the Horse Marines" or "The Girl with the Green Eyes." This show ran on Broadway in 1901 for 163 performances and was revived again in 1904. It is dated by social & professional roles of women at the dawn of the 20th century, which were quite different than today's standards. The play initially caused controversy because the opening scene shows women who are grieving just after a funeral, a situation which had not reached Broadway previously. There are great opening clashes between the widow Mrs. Hunter and her sister-in-law Ruth. The action builds well from act to until the final curtain. The main issue involves an examination of ethics and the stockmarket as we find that Hunter went broke in a copper deal and his son-in-law Sterling who is an investment broker runs through family fortunes like water on one speculative deal after the next. By the final curtain when he finally overdoses, we almost stand and applaud his demise. The themes of ethics and investment still seemed relevant today. As we become increasingly familiar and care about the characters, we become more concerned for their financial well-being which goes down the tubes with Sterling's abuse of their investments.I've never heard of another revival of this show; so it is certainly ripe for modern theatrical production. I think it would play well as a serious selection in a season's bill. It is nice to have a fresh new edition of this golden gem from over a century ago. Enjoy!
