"[...]one hour's study, I sent you out, telling you to run about and play a "good spell." To the best of my judgment you studied, during the five months that this school lasted, nearly four hours a day, two being at figures. * * * * * During the year that I taught at Bedeque, you studied about five hours a day in school; and I used to exercise you about an hour a day besides, either morning or evening. This would make six hours per day, nearly or quite two and a half hours of that time at numbers either at your slate or mentally. By John As a long-time amateur astronomer, I've become a fan of autobiographies by astronomers (amateur or professional). I've read half a dozen or so, but they're getting harder to find. I guess there aren't too many amateur or professional astronomers who want to write a book about their life in astronomy. Wow. Really? That's hard to believe, isn't it? The fact is, your life and your personal experience is interesting to others, even if you didn't become famous. We should all write autobiographies. Now you take ol' Simon Newcomb here! Wow! He was famous a long time ago, but you probably didn't know it. He tells his story like Forrest Gump! You won't believe all the things he was involved with. It all sounds too good to be true. And it's not all about astronomy. There's a lot of history mentioned here. That's one of the best things about autobiographies: you get a first-person account of life in the past. You'll appreciate the forgotten and small details about social life, technology, politics, and even gossip from those bygone days that get tossed into the mix with all the important stuff.Take a quick read of Simon Newcomb on Wikipedia, then read his book. You won't be disappointed.
