"[...]not because of social position or any such foolishness. You really mustn’t mind Mignon. She has been—well—brought up rather differently from the rest of us. We——” Marjorie stopped in confusion. “There are some things I can’t explain,” she went on slowly. “It seems rather queer in me to ask you to like Mignon, but if you will try to think of her as kindly as you can, it will help her a great deal. I’m afraid that’s not very clear,” she concluded in embarrassment. “I think I understand,” nodded Veronica. A shade of the peculiar smile that Marjorie had noted on first sight of her at Miss Archer’s flickered briefly about her mobile lips. “After all, I am here for study. Under the circumstances I can’t really expect to take much part in the social side of high school. I have had so many——” She suddenly ceased speaking, with a little catch of breath. “Oh, you must come to my home to see me and come to my parties, too,” put in Marjorie quickly. “I wish you to meet my mother and father. Old-fashioned school stories, modern for their times By Kindle Customer These once-popular books for girls are such period pieces and their moralizing (and the girls' utter lack of interest in boys) seems so old-fashioned that it's rather difficult for a contemporary reader to realize that their consistent promotion of egalitarianism and inclusion were quite advanced at the time. The heroine, Marjorie Dean, is clearly from the upper middle class, as are most of her friends and her arch-rival, but in this book, she fights the social exclusion of a girl who is (gasp) also a servant and much is made of her having previously befriended girls from poor families. The girls she befriends and helps regard her as particularly benevolent for doing so and both their gratitude and her not considering herself worthy of special gratitude are portrayed as quite natural and appropriate. These girls' series usually featured well-nigh perfect heroines and made no bones about their moral superiority, while their foils are consistently petty, deceptive, malicious, snobbish, heartless, and irresponsible. These books are far more likely to appeal to readers for their historical value rather than their story-telling as the style cloys on modern readers, but as period pieces, they are a pleasant glimpse to very different times and classes.

Great reads without all of today's garbage verbiage. They are centered around school girls in the 1920's.
