"David's done a great job with this concise, approachable guide for moving to a primitive diet. Two things about this book really resonated with me. First, David avoids the preachy tone far too many diet/eating guides use regardless of what they're covering. Secondly, David lays out a great path to rolling into primitive eating: it's a series of timeboxed single tasks to focus on. Example: Step 9 is to shop for fresh food three times a week over a two week span. This approach is great because David lays out a path to follow for lifestyle change, rather than trying to get readers to adopt an avalanche of dramatic, overwhelming changes." "Mr. Soto has done a good job of consolidating a strategy of healthy living into a brief, easy to read book... The driving force behind this book follows one of the most primitive human psychological traits: habit. Instead of giving a predetermined timeline such as 'accomplish this in 30 days', it provides approximate timelines or an 'after you have followed this step successfully for X days, then move on', allowing people to occasionally fall off the wagon for a day or two and get back on. Forming new habits takes time, repetition, and personal determination." In January 2011 I decided to try my next diet. I had been exploring different diets for about 20 years by this point but this next one was different. This one made sense, common sense. I had already been a big proponent of getting back to our roots and getting as natural as possible. I had also recently been exposed to the theory that the Agricultural Age was the beginning of the demise of mankind. Mass producing food just did not seem natural, and when I found that there was a way to eat that supported my beliefs, I was all in. Before I could finish The Paleo Diet by Robb Wolf, I was blasting all over social media about how this was the only way to eat. I was even, for a short while, the Paleo police and would criticize people who were not following the “rules” to a tee. Realizing I was being a jerk, I gave up my badge for the Paleo police but I continued making posts and bragging about my progress. I even started taking on personal training clients after taking a break for many years. To me, eating this way was the missing ingredient to my success as a personal trainer. Within six months of going paleo, I lost around 35 pounds, dropped to a weight I had never seen as an adult, and accomplished things I never thought I could do, like run four miles barefoot and do pull-ups and ring dips. The transformation was amazing. Over the years I’ve received several inquiries from friends and family on Facebook asking how I achieved these results. My advice was simple: eat these foods, don’t eat these foods, and read these books. Every single person I gave this advice to, failed miserably. I couldn’t understand why when it was exactly how I got results! I would even get a little frustrated (maybe a lot) at the fact that people weren’t achieving good results with the advice I was giving them. In my mind, I gave great advice. Then someone pointed out to me that not everyone was like me. Not everyone was a gung-ho, all or nothing, do-it-now type of person. That’s when I sat down and started creating this program.

The Complete Guide to Primitive Eating: A self paced, step by step guide to ease the Paleo diet into your life., by David Soto Jr.

Review "I actually liked this book because of its gradual approach to Paleo. I didn't think I would because I have read so many "Introduction to Paleo" books out there that most of the information starts to bleed together. In this case, it didn't. David Soto, Jr. provides one of the best step-by-step plans I have ever read on transitioning from the SAD (Standard American Diet) to the Paleo/Primal diet." ~Charles Franklin, blogger at This College Dropout

About the Author David was born in Gardena, California and spent most of his childhood in Los Angeles. In high school, his family moved to a small town in Missouri. At age 17, David joined the Air Force and spent the next 23 years toggling between active duty Air Force and Missouri Air National Guard. In 2002 he was deployed under Operation Enduring Freedom and in 2004 he went to Iraq as a civilian contractor because his Air Guard Unit would not send him themselves. Throughout the years, when not in uniform, David tried his best to fit into society. He got a job, went into debt to buy a house and a car, and tried to find a girl to marry and start a family with. None of these seemed to work out for him. Instead, he felt best on the road. At the age of 30, he sold most of his possessions, put his house up for rent, hit the road, and (more or less) hasn’t stopped since. Currently, David works with clients as a life, small business, and wellness coach. He writes and speaks about how to regain your freedom through simplification. He calls it: Primitive Living. You can learn more about his philosophy at www.theprimitiveyou.com.

By Charles Franklin I actually liked this book because of its gradual approach to Paleo. I didn't think I would because I have read so many "Introduction to Paleo" books out there that most of the information starts to bleed together. In this case, it didn't. David Soto, Jr. provides one of the best step-by-step plans I have ever read on transitioning from the SAD (Standard American Diet) to the Paleo/Primal diet. Each step is given concisely, but with enough detail and guidelines so you know when to move on to the next step. His speaks in straightforward, sometimes "in-your-face" language, but I didn't mind it. If you want to get serious about transitioning into the Paleo diet, this book will definitely help you do that.As a result of reading this book, I now have a clearer idea of how I want to "upgrade my Paleo transition" and began following the author on social media and his blog. I found out about him through the GymMyth.com podcast and connected with his story of persistence through struggle with food, poverty, and redefinition. I bookmarked the book to buy, but actually won the book in a contest through the blog. (That was freaking amazing!) I enjoyed the book and look forward to learning more from this guy.

You don't have to be a paleo nut to benefit from this book By Seth Mr. Soto has done a good job of consolidating a strategy of healthy living into a brief, easy to read book. I am not a proponent of the paleo diet, but do work to attain a 'less processed' method of eating and living. I already make most of my food from ingredients versus dumping something out of a box, but the food journal was something I hadn't seriously considered. I have just started my food journal and will begin to eliminate foods that have detrimental effects. Writing things down instead of keeping them in your head assists in accountability and not justifying deviations from the plan. Forming new habits takes time, repetition, and personal determination.

Best Ebook North And South, by Elizabeth Gaskell

“North and South “(1854) is a novel by the English writer Elizabeth Gaskell. The title refers to one of the themes of the novel: the contrast of lifestyles between the North and the South of England. The protagonist is the young Margaret Hale: her father has a crisis of conscience and leave the Church. Margaret is forced to leave her comfortable home in Hampshire and move with her family in Northern England. Margareth arrives in Milton and she is initially reluctant to adapt because of the ugliness of industrial town. She soon became aware of the suffering and poverty of the workers of the mill and begins to develop a keen sense of social justice. All this is intensified by her tempestuous relationship with the mill owner John Tornton .....

By CoffeeGurl It'd been a long time (a decade or so) since I read this Elizabeth Gaskell classic before I watched the BBC adaptation on DVD and loved it. Rereading this novel was the best decision I could have made because I hadn't appreciated it then the way I did now. North and South captures the social divide and how the manufacturing and trading industries were revolutionizing in the 1850s. Margaret Hale, the daughter of a respectable clergyman, and her family move from the south of England to the industrialized northern town of Milton after her father leaves the church because of his conscience. Margaret is appalled with Milton and the vulgar, uncouth ways of tradesmen and merchants, whom she also sees as uncivilized and cruel. However, will she change her mind after she meets and gets to know the dashing Mr. John Thornton? There are many twists throughout the novel.I was able to appreciate the romance and building of tension between Margaret and Mr. Thornton now, especially after having watched the BBC miniseries and the wonderful Richard Armitage playing Thornton. Right now, to me, there are four memorable classic literary heroes -- Mr. Darcy, Heathcliff, Mr. Rochester and now Mr. Thornton. He is gentler and not as brooding here as he is portrayed in the miniseries, but he is as compelling as I had remembered him. The last few pages are my favorite, especially this line: "While she sought for this paper, her very heart-pulse was arrested by the tone in which Mr. Thornton spoke. His voice was hoarse, and trembling with tender passion, as he said: `Margaret.' " What a romantic line and I wish it had been added to the miniseries. The ending at the train station in the miniseries is wonderful (if a bit anachronistic), but it would have been even better if the aforementioned line had been incorporated into the scene. All in all, this is one of my favorite Victorian classics. Elizabeth Gaskell isn't quite as known or as celebrated as Dickens or the Brontes, people who had been big friends of hers, according to her biography, but she was a gifted writer in her own right and her talent shows in this wonderful gem which I will reread again in the not-so-distant future.

Surprisingly modern tale of class conflict, management theory, and of course, love By Amazon Customer I read the book, like many other reviewers here, after I had watched the brilliant BBC miniseries starring Richard Armitage and Daniela Denby-Ashe. I definitely agree with the comments of many reviewers here that you somehow seem to develop a finer appreciation of the nuances of both after doing that.A lot of reviewers have covered the ground admirably on the story itself, so I won't go into too much detail on that. In addition to the fine development of plot and characters alike, what I found refreshing about the novel were:a. Unlike a few other writers of her time, Elizabeth Gaskell focuses a lot more on the thought processes and feelings of the male characters in the novel. For example, you don't get to hear a lot of what Darcy or Edward Ferrars are thinking in Pride and Prejudice, or Sense and Sensibility, except almost tangentially. In sharp contrast, Mrs. Gaskell gives quite a detailed peep into what John Thornton and Richard Hale are thinking, throughout the novel. As someone who is always interested in the differences in thought processes between the sexes, I found this to be refreshingly different from other novels of the time.b. Being in business, it was quite a new experience to read about John Thornton's evolution first as a business owner and then as a "leader", to use that overused term of today. Mrs. Gaskell appears to have a remarkably sophisticated understanding of both management and labor issues. The examples that stand out in my mind - John Thornton's increasing interest in exploring a better construct for labor-management relations beyond the mere "cash nexus" (towards the end of the novel), and his practice of building what we would call a business case today, as he asks Nicholas Higgins to put some figures together for the new cafeteria.c. A valuable peep into the mores of the time - for example, despite being fond of Bessy Higgins, Margaret recoils in horror at the thought of visiting her after Bessy's death, a point glossed over in the BBC mini-series, - it gives you a rare insight into things like death and burial customs of the time,.I must agree with a few other reviewers that the last few chapters seem a little rushed, but from an overall perspective, it is hard to beat this novel for its pure wholesome enjoyment value - more serious and deep than a Pride and Prejudice, and still light enough for people like me who cannot take Thomas Hardy. A definite five stars!

Yes, there is a very slow start to this novel. I wonder whether that's because it was first serialized by Dickens, and Mrs. Gaskell was paid by the word. And, yes, the ending is rather abrupt, especially preceded by the last few slow chapters. Maybe Dickens lost his patience. In so many ways, though, this novel is a treasure. It's not easy to write a political novel with a strong love story and good characterizations. Gaskell takes on quite a bit and mostly succeeds in her task of describing the changes industrialization brought to England. She balances her sympathy for the workers in the factories with the dilemmas posed to the mill owners by new machinery, competition from abroad, and the threats of potential workers' strikes. She contrasts very effectively the excitement of this new way of life against the nostalgia for the agrarian past. These were new concepts in Victorian England, but they are not so foreign today that we cannot readily understand their significance. She gives us a sympathetic and spirited heroine in Margaret Hale, who is wise beyond her years. Another colorful character is Nicholas Higgins. I found myself looking forward to his scenes because he provides the humor in an almost-humorless book. (It is funny at the end, though, and I would have liked to have seen more of this tone.)Mr. Thornton is a character we can readily identify with--someone who triumphs over adversity and seeks to constantly better himself. Someone with high standards, yet none higher than he holds himself to. Margaret is his match in every way.I did see many plot similarities with "Pride and Prejudice" in the love story. We have characters of different class backgrounds who are initially repelled but who come to appreciate each other and are kept apart by misunderstandings and circumstances. The proposal scenes are strikingly familiar, and the first proposal includes almost the same language (re gentlemanlike behavior) that Elizabeth speaks to Darcy. And we have a Lady Catherine DeBourgh character in Mrs. Thornton, who does her best to drive the lovers apart. But I can't fault Mrs. Gaskell for borrowing plotlines from the master. Although Gaskell is a strong writer, she does not quite have Jane Austen's gift for revealing the humanity in her characters with humor and affection. There is not much "fun" and no banter (until the very last lines of the book) in the North and South love story. There are many plot contrivances and conveniences, too, which compel us to suspend disbelief. A few too many rapid deaths, a character's coincidental presence at a key scene, another character showing up in an unexpected place, and more. But these limitations serve to drive the story and allow us to focus on the strong moral characters of our central characters and our strong wish for their eventual reconciliation. In the Penguin edition, it is also rather disturbing to find the plot given away in the footnotes. I read the footnotes religiously to orient myself, but I don't understand why they have to mention so many plot occurrences (especially big things like deaths and proposals) ahead of time. So, if you don't want to know how things go, read the footnotes (and preface) judiciously.OK, I've written a lot of negatives and yet I give the book 4 stars. Despite its flaws, North and South takes on a lot and mainly succeeds. I love its ambition and its great heart. I love that I learned a lot about English history at that particular time. I love that it rewarded me for getting through those first 150 pages with a rich, compelling story. I love that Mrs. Gaskell held my interest to the end. As Victorian novels go, this is surprisingly modern and a worthwhile read.

The first four books are about high school, and three of the characters continue on together to college. They are the hero, Grace Harlowe, who is athletic, but mostly excels at keeping everyone happy. Anne Pierson is the straight-A student and professional actress from a poor family. Miriam Nesbit is a reformed troublemaker. They go together to all all-girls college, and try to make as many friends, and help as many of their fellow students, as possible. Anne sympathizes with Ruth Denton, who is working her way through college. Miriam sympathizes with selfish J. Elfreda Briggs (destined to become a major character in the series). This book gives a nice picture of early 20th century college life. E.g., at the dances, boys are not allowed, so half the girls have to pretend to be boys for dancing. Major topics are rumors, playing tricks, etc. Character development is important, and done nicely. My negative on this is how the author treats bullying. Towards the beginning, a girl is hazed upon arrival, ruining her first day of school. She understandably reports the incident. However, the author continually states that the report is much worse than the hazing. I strongly disagree.

The Poems of John Donne is one volume paperback edition of the poems of John Donne (1572-1631) based on a comprehensive re-evaluation of his work from composition to circulation and reception. Donne’s output is tremendously varied in style and form and demonstrates his ability to exercise his rhetorical capabilities according to context and occasion. This edition aims to present the text of all his known poems, from the epigrams, songs and satires written for fellow young men about town, to the more mature verse-epistles and memorial elegies written for his patrons.

The Longman Annotated English Poets series traditionally aims to present poems in chronological order; in this edition, however, the principle has been observed only within generic sections. This organisation reproduces the manner in which Donne’s original readers first encountered the poems in the various manuscripts of his elegies and satires that circulated in Donne’s lifetime. Volume One contains the Epigrams, Verse Letters to Friends, Love Lyrics, Love Elegies and Satires; Volume Two contains the religious poems, Wedding Celebrations, Verse Epistles to Patronesses, Commemorations, and the Anniversaries. The lyrics have been arranged alphabetically for ease of reference and because, in all but a few cases, precise date of composition is impossible to determine. Each poem has extensive editorial commentary designed to put the twenty-first century reader in possession of all that is necessary fully to appreciate Donne’s work. A substantial headnote sets each poem in its historical and literary context, while the annotations give detailed guidance on the wealth of classical and religious allusions and give full representation to the literary, historical and philosophical culture out of which the poems grew. In keeping with the traditions of the series, Donne’s own text has been modernised in punctuation and spelling except where to do so would alter or disrupt a rhyme.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. The finest collection available of this superb but difficult poet By Michael Birman I've been in a love/hate relationship with Donne's poetry since my college days. I love his poetry but he seems to hate me in response. How do I know that? Because I thoroughly enjoy reading his craggy, convoluted verse with all of its twists and turns of thought and various shades of meaning. I derive pleasure from his insidiously clever use of language, conjuring words that mean exactly what they say as a prelude to weaving phrases that mock you with their obscurity and their utter disconnection from anything that's gone before in the poem. Donne responds to my affection by donning the coat of a poetic chameleon, altering the meaning of a poem every time you think you've pinned him down and grasped what he's getting at. As much as I enjoy reading Donne's poetry, I often feel that he's being willfully obscure. He hates being understood and he wants you to know it.Because of the difficulty of Donne's poetry, his "affecting the metaphysicals" as Dryden accused him of doing, a guide to his poetry is a necessary item in any reader's arsenal. I have at least a dozen different collections of Donne's poetry in my library. Some are quite good in explicating the poems they contain, Some are more comprehensive than others in their contents. But of all of the Donne collections that I own, none approach this Longman's annotated edition in overall quality. It is complete, containing all of the poems attributed to Donne. It is exhaustively annotated, with notes that are as lengthy as necessary, laying on the same page as the poem so that reference is quick and easy without being intrusive. The headnotes are extensive and an absolute boon to the reader as a thorough preparation to reading a particular poem. Even the superb illustrations of manuscripts or of early editions that are included in these Longman's annotated volumes are informative. The ability to place a poet's work in historical context has become a necessity, given the vast amount of recent scholarship that has broadened our knowledge about all of the great 17th century poets. Of no poet is this more true than John Donne, whose work has become something of a touchstone for studying the poetry of that era. The Longman's Annotated Donne does a superb job of placing all of his work in historical context and is the clearest, most comprehensive guide to understanding his poetry. Donne is a wonderful poet but he is often an obscure one. There is nothing quite like the thrill of that moment of understanding and lucidity, when the scrim lifts and the meaning of a poem becomes apparent. Donne requires a little work but he will definitely reward the effort. I think Longman's Annotated John Donne is the finest collection of his poetry currently available and the one to own.

Longman's Annotated edition is probably worth the money By pandajama This is a review of the Longman Annotated English Poets edition of John Donne's poems. In my opinion, it is worth the money. Donne is a tough poet, and the notes in this edition are considerable. They are right on the page, in footnote fashion, so easy to locate or skip, as you wish. And they are meaty.Just as important to me is the quality of the binding. Although a paperback, this is a very tough book, with a sewn binding and sturdy pages. It's pretty hefty for reading on the couch (which is where I do most of my reading) but by no means impossible. This book is currently about $37.00 US, and that's three times what you would pay for other editions. But I think the notes make it worth the money. I hope you get as much joy out of the poems and notes as I am getting.

By Mandyf1231 If this rating was on content alone, I would wish for more stars than five to give it. It is a wonderful text, certainly the best scholarly edition of Donne's poetry there is. I am glad to own such a definitive edition of Donne's poetry. However, I do wish it was less compact. Because the book is very thick, but not wide, it is very difficult to keep open, which means I go through ridiculous measures to keep the pages open and type/annotate. I've had other Longman editions that are wider and seem to stay open better.
