Thousands of natural materials can produce glorious color—the insect cochineal produces pink, maroon, and purple, and more than 500 species of plants produce indigo blue. Now, in The Modern Natural Dyer, expert Kristine Vejar shares the most user-friendly techniques for dyeing yarn, fabric, and finished goods at home with foraged and garden-raised dyestuffs as well as with convenient natural dye extracts. Demystifying the "magic," Vejar explains in explicit, easy-to-follow detail how to produce consistent, long-lasting color. With stunning photography of the dyes themselves, the dyeing process, and 20 projects for home and wardrobe (some to knit, some to sew, and some just a matter of submerging a finished piece in a prepared bath), The Modern Natural Dyer is a complete resource for aspiring and experienced dye artisans.

The Modern Natural Dyer: A Comprehensive Guide to Dyeing Silk, Wool, Linen and Cotton at Home, by Kristine Vejar

Review “This book is an amazing resource for hand-dyeing using natural materials and crafting with the results. If you’ve never dyed before it will give you the bug, and if you’ve tried some dyeing projects in the past you will definitely want this book on your shelf for reference and inspiration.” (About.com (5 stars))“Kristine’s book breaks down natural dyeing from both a scientific and creative perspective, making the process (which has always seemed intimidating to me) feel as approachable as it is beautiful. I love the projects in the book because, in addition to learning basic dye formulas and techniques, the DIY ideas are a nice balance of classic and contemporary. From cool, blousy shirts (that would look at home in any hip boutique) to table linens and pillows, The Modern Natural Dyer is a great way to dive into the world of dyeing.” (Design*Sponge)“The Modern Natural Dyer is a terrific primer for anyone new to the technique. Kristine walks you through the ins and outs of the process, from defining what scouring and mordanting mean to helping you learn how best to achieve desired colors.” (DIY Network)“Vejar’s lovely book is very sophisticated and detailed.” (Library Journal (starred review))

About the Author Kristine Vejar is the owner of A Verb for Keeping Warm, a popular yarn store and natural dye studio in Oakland, California. A Fulbright scholar, she began her intensive study and practice of natural dyeing nearly two decades ago in India.

I wish it would have included a wider variety of dyestuffs. There are about 24 included. Another issue I had, and I should have anticipated this, was the amount of space used for the projects. It is my opinion that if you are at the point where you want to dye your own fabric and yarn, you either already have a project in mind or can figure it out. Pages exclusively dedicated to a picture of the project or knitting and sewing instructions are about 43 pages of a 192 page book.On the good side, specific weights and temperatures are provided, as well as a dye chart for cochineal, madder, quebracho red, cutch, rhubarb, weld, fustic, pomegranate, and walnut, for both cellulose and protein, in different concentrations of dye as well as the chalk vs wheat soak for cellulose. If only the projects could be switched out in favor of more dye charts! The provided dyeing/scouring/mordanting instructions are clear, and make the information accessible to the beginner. So, I think this book will be great for some, and 'ok' for others. Try and look at a copy before you purchase.

Amazing photos, insightful background information, clear instructions, and beautiful projects. The real strength of this book is its practical nature - it is like a recipe book. Kristine provides careful measurements of all ingredients for all of the steps in the projects presented - from scour, to mordant, to the "goods" (fabric, yarn, etc.), to dyestuff. She also gives plenty of information about how to make substitutions. Emphasis is placed on how various fiber types respond to dyeing, documented by shade card photos of different dye concentrations on protein and cellulose fibers. There are sections on using whole dyestuffs, natural dye extracts, and indigo, all of which have their own processing requirements. I also have Wild Colors by Jenny Dean, which is a great companion if you want to learn more about growing and harvesting whole botanical dyestuffs. I highly recommend the Modern Natural Dyer to anyone who wishes to learn more about natural dyes, experiment with natural dyeing, and/or work through various projects inspired by these amazing colors. Project kits are available on the A Verb for Keeping Warm website - I really want to make the sewing kit and the cochineal-dyed socks. Congrats, Kristine, on an amazing book!

"Self-published by South Paris resident and Ayurvedic counselor Harris, this book lacks frills but makes up for it in the pantry-stocking section and in the sheer number of recipes. The recipes reflect the breadth of vegan cooking, including cultured nut-based cheeses, plant-based seitan meats, raw lasagna and black bean brownies. In true Maine fashion, one section of the book is devoted to whoopie pies." Avery Yale Kamila, Portland Press Herald I have heard from many people over the years that they would love to be vegan but it is too complicated – too much time and energy goes into the preparation of every dish. This inspired me to write The Uncomplicated Vegan – filled with recipes that are easy to make and packed with flavor, texture and nutrition while supporting environmental awareness and cosmoconsciousness, two critical elements of our ongoing relationship with the planet and everything living on it. In this cookbook, I share the tools, techniques, fresh wholesome ingredients and seasoning mixtures I use to make delicious, authentic meals from foods that are organic, unprocessed and rich in nutrition and taste. Additionally, many of my recipes can be made without gluten or nightshade vegetables for people who are sensitive to those particular food groups. These foods will support you as a vegan in your nutritional requirements, support you as a human in your flavor needs, and support you as a compassionate being in your journey – wherever you may be going!

Dowdeswell We recently had a chance to check out a new cookbook called The Uncomplicated Vegan, it is primarily targeted at those who would consider veganism but think “it sounds too difficult” and might worry that a lack of knowledge of a healthy plant based diet might leave them falling short of a nutritionally varied diet. The book itself contains a TON of really simple recipes and a neat introduction on the books philosophy of a moralistic and non-violent approach to food (and other lifestyle choices). It lays out a basis for its existence by explaining in easy terms why veganism is a wonderful lifestyle choice for us all to take and reiterates the need for veganism as a moral baseline as humans.Early on The Uncomplicated Vegan gives you good insight into what sort of appliances and tools a well equipped kitchen might benefit from in order to make the cooking experience much easier on your culinary adventures. The “My Vegan Kitchen” section of the book Is particularly interesting for me personally as I love to find out more about how others approach cooking delicious food and especially how they develop their skills and create new recipes, this gives a great insight in Chris’s holistic approach to nutrition and covers the financial implications of your food shop and the importance of enjoying cooking! For those new to plant based nutrition the early pages touch on ingredients, replacements (E.g. meat and dairy) and seasoning, along with a list of things to avoid (E.g. food colourings and artificial flavourings.). There are some wonderful shortcuts too for things like replacing eggs (Flaxeggs) and quick dairy replacements.Now. When I say this book is comprehensive, it is packed FULL of over 200 recipes, most of which have very few ingredients and can followed with little skill. There are some BRILLIANT vegan cheese recipes in here, from Mozzarella to Brie to creamy cashew cheese! The recipes focus on easy to follow versions of favourite home recipes, but also stray into store cupboard essentials like spice mixes and protein “meat” bases, salad dressings. Here are a selection of our favourite recipes in the book.Cashew Cheese Base, Jamaican Seasoning, Scrambled Tofu, Fiesta Open Faced Tortillas, Peanut Butter Cookies, Chocolate Brownie “on Fudgier Side”, Pumpkin Pie.This is exactly the sort of non-intimidating approachable cook book that I wish I’d have had when I started on my vegan journey.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A quick and easy guide to the gluten-free lifestyle By excellentwheels Everywhere I turn these days I hear talk about a gluten-free diet or “being free” not to mention the benefits of the paleo or vegetarian diet. So I decided to do a little research and went hunting for an inexpensive book that would explain in no uncertain terms why being gluten-free is so important to a healthy diet in this book not only clearly explained the health benefits of being free but contained a lot of delicious sounding recipes as well. Not only does the book cover the basics of the gluten-free diet and some of its recipes, but it also includes some vegetarian and paleo recipes and information as well, thereby covering all of my informational needs concerning diets and healthy eating in one fell swoop, but it clearly explained the importance of a gluten-free diet. The main reason the book concerned itself with is that is converted into sugar by the human body and sugar if not used properly as fuel or consume too much is stored as fat in the body for later use. So the theory is that the less someone consumes the less material there is for the body to convert into fat, thereby allowing someone to maintain a healthy weight level and have all the benefits of health and energy that go along with having a healthy body mass index or BMI.The information contained in this book is written in simple and easy to understand language, making it very accessible. I also appreciated a concise explanation as to why living a free lifestyle is important, even if you don’t have a group of free allergy. I also greatly appreciate the extra information concerning the paleo and vegetarian diet programs used in conjunction or in combination with an existing diet program. This book provides enough information for someone to lead an extremely healthy and fit lifestyle, all without sacrificing taste! I am therefore very pleased with my purchase of this book and I’m pretty sure you will be to.

My DH and I have been working through this book systematically, and every experience is a welcome surprise of good taste and vibrant flavors. I'm loving this experience of cultural variations on a simple yet versatile food form.A cool thing: the Author grouped a series of simple sandwiches and counted them as 1 recipe. A (selfish) complaint: the Author did NOT group a handful of simple dessert sandwiches that were more similar than the savory set that were grouped. I feel like grouping the simple dessert sammiches might have left room for more sandwich recipes.TL;DR: I want more recipes, please!

Why do we eat toast for breakfast, and then toast to good health at dinner? What does the turkey we eat on Thanksgiving have to do with the country on the eastern Mediterranean? Can you figure out how much your dinner will cost by counting the words on the menu?

In The Language of Food, Stanford University professor and MacArthur Fellow Dan Jurafsky peels away the mysteries from the foods we think we know. Thirteen chapters evoke the joy and discovery of reading a menu dotted with the sharp-eyed annotations of a linguist. Jurafsky points out the subtle meanings hidden in filler words like "rich" and "crispy", zeroes in on the metaphors and storytelling tropes we rely on in restaurant reviews, and charts a micro-universe of marketing language on the back of a bag of potato chips. The fascinating journey through The Language of Food uncovers a global atlas of culinary influences. With Jurafsky's insight, words like ketchup, macaron, and even salad become living fossils that contain the patterns of early global exploration that predate our modern fusion-filled world. From ancient recipes preserved in Sumerian song lyrics to colonial shipping routes that first connected East and West, Jurafsky paints a vibrant portrait of how our foods developed. A surprising history of culinary exchange - a sharing of ideas and culture as much as ingredients and flavors - lies just beneath the surface of our daily snacks, soups, and suppers. Engaging and informed, Jurafsky's unique study illuminates an extraordinary network of language, history, and food. The menu is yours to enjoy.

Ryan Easily one of the most compelling books I've read in a long time: fascinating if you love food, language, or history. Jurafsky has a clear-eyed view of how cultures interact, not to mention serious linguistic expertise, and he's an entertaining writer. This makes for a great combination with broad appeal. (I can think of about a dozen people I know who would enjoy receiving this as a gift.)Some of the stories are just mindblowing, even though I thought I knew a lot about both etymology and food. For example, do you know how fish and chips, Japanese tempura, ceviche, and old Middle Eastern cooking are connected? Jurafsky will tell you. (And he'll have the endnotes to back it up, unlike a lot of cute little gift books and websites that make silly, undocumented claims about word or food origins.)

Stick a Feather in Your Hat and Call it Macaroni By takingadayoff What do the chewy coconut cookies I know as macaroons have to do with the French almond cookies called macarons? Is it just a coincidence they have practically the same name? A misunderstanding? Stanford linguist Dan Jurafsky not only explains the relationship between the two, but shows how macaroni is also related, linguistically speaking. The Language of Food is a collection of long essays about the linguistics, origins, and usages of words having to do with food. Each chapter covers another way in which food and language combine to reveal quite a lot about who we are and who we were. As humans, we really only need a few words and a few foods to sustain life, but we've managed to turn both into entertainment, and even art.Along the way we get to learn how we came to "toast" an occasion with alcohol (it actually did involve toasted bread at one time) and how ice cream was invented. There are discussions on how the language of menus differs from a hundred years ago and on how marketers invent brand names for food items.Jurafsky keeps a casual tone while divulging a massive amount of information. I believe this is his first book for a general audience, and hope there will be more.

W. family The book is fine, but it was really, really poorly formatted for ebook-- a lot of the letters with accents are the wrong size and weight and many of the images are out of place and lists that are supposed to be side-by-side are interspersed with each other. It's v. annoying.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Lacking By squid amigo 1. This book is riddled with numerous and careless typos, like "peat" instead of "meat".2. The page numbers on each page are missing. The table of contents will tell you the page number on which a chapter begins, but if you then search for that number you will discover that the pages of the book are not numbered. oops!3. Teaching is lacking. The subject of fermented foods is unfamiliar to many people and requires more explanation. For instance, there could have been a section on using whey as a starter for all of the foods in this book -- not just for the meat and dairy. Also, using the term "starter package" does not help the reader understand what a "starter package" is. What is it made of? Who makes it? Which stores have it?What if the reader would like to reduce sodium in the diet? Will decreasing salt affect the fermentation if not using a "starter package"?If the reader is lactose intolerant will this rule out all whey fermentation?4. Lack of credibility. The book gives no information about the author. What makes this author an expert? One can wonder -- with the carelessness demonstrated in the book are the recipes safe?

However - I was intrigued enough to try it and found that the recipes were really good and delicious. I now make fermented foods all the time. This is a really interesting and unusual book to have in your cooking library. Jake

Especially the classic sauerkraut was my favourite! For those of you yet to give fermented recipes a shot, this is something you can experiment with for a different kind of culinary experience!
