The groundbreaking 2014 documentary Cowspiracy presents shocking truths about the effects of industrial animal agriculture on the planet. The leading cause of deforestation, rainforest destruction, greenhouse gas production, water consumption and pollution, habitat loss, species extinction, ocean dead-zones, topsoil erosion, and a host of other environmental ills, animal agriculture is the biggest issue facing the planet today and one of the most controversial environmental secrets in the world of conservation.Filled with anecdotes, statistics, research, interviews with the filmmakers and contributors, and unabridged transcripts from the film, this companion book supplements and expands upon the documentary in every way. With all this and more, The Sustainability Secret reveals the absolutely devastating environmental impact large-scale factory farming has on our planet and offers a path to global sustainability for a growing population.

The SustainabilitySecret should be a wake-up call for anyone concerned about sustainability; we simplycannot ignore the devastating environmental impact of our diet any longer. I will carry this book with me because its illustrationsdemonstrate every essential point as to why animal agriculture must end now and howwonderful it is that we already have its replacementveganic agriculture.”Will Anderson, author of This is Hope: Green Vegans and the New Human EcologyThe Sustainability Secret vividly exposes the single largest contributing factor toour demise and that of other species, which is the consumption of animals andthe supportive animal agricultural systems, and then provides a pathway toward ahealthier, more peaceful and just planet by re-connecting us to the stark realities offood choice and sustainability, urging all of us to act, and to do so now.”Dr. Richard A. To feed that same person on a vegetarian diet that includes eggs and dairy requires three times as much land. To feed a person on the average diet eaten by an American citizen, with high consumption of meat, dairy, and eggs, requires eighteen times as much land. This is because you can produce 37,000 pounds of vegetables on one and a half acres, but only 375 pounds of meat on that same plot of land. The comparison doesn’t end with land use. A vegan diet produces half as much carbon dioxide as an American omnivore, uses 1/11 the amount of fossil fuels, 1/13 the amount of water, and 1/18 the amount of land. After adding all this up, I realized I had the choiceevery single dayto save:Over 1,100 gallons of water45 pounds of grain30 square feet of forested landThe equivalent of 20 pounds of carbon dioxideAnd one animal’s life.Every. Single. Day.

Like most Americans I considered myself a carnivore By Cameron Mennis "The Sustainability Secret", and the corresponding movie "Cowspiracy" have absolutely transformed my life. Like most Americans I considered myself a carnivore, in fact I took pride in being a "meat-eating man" because I felt that it somehow made me more masculine. HOW IGNORANT I WAS. I never thought about the environmental impact of eating meat and animal products because nobody talks about it. We have become focused on the war on fossil fuels without ever questioning the severe impact of our own DIET. This book provides astounding information and statistics on the UNSUSTAINABLE American Diet mostly based on animal products.Due to this book and movie, I have become completely vegan for 6 months now and I am LOVING it. I even had a full blood panel recently and my cholesterol dropped 20%, my blood pressure dropped, my resting heart rate dropped to a much healthier level and I have lost 12 pounds. I feel great! Best of all? I am not contributing to the environmental destruction caused by the animal agriculture industry.Read this book and your life will be forever changed. As a 6-foot-4 man, people are surprised that I am vegan. "Where do you get your protein?" they ask. It's pretty simple, I eat all plant-based foods and get 60 to 80 grams per day which is the recommended daily value for a man my size (6'4'' 205 pounds). Americans eat far too much protein (120 to 150 grams per day on average), and emerging research suggests that high protein diets contribute to obesity. Its time to transform our way of thinking. Let's all do our part to eliminate (or minimize) our reliance on animal products."Nothing will benefit human health and increase the chances for survival of life on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet." —Albert Einstein.

I am a plant based vegan and I consider health, welfare of animals and environment into my choice. It cures of heart disease, cancer and so many deadly diseases. I watched Cowspiracy when it came up couple of years ago and recently. It is a fantastic movie and beautiful with fascinating interviews. Here is my reading list for a plant based sustainable lifestyle. After reading the book, if you don't turn vegan, I am not sure what I can say!1. Dr. Thomas Campbell, MD and Dr. T. By Lisa Lightning Such a great book but REPRINT IT WITH LARGER PRINT!! I love your movie, love the concept of the book, but whoever designed the layout should be fired immediately. I thought another reviewer was crazy when he mentioned the small print, but it's unbelievably tiny! SO much white space and such tiny print. Not a pleasure to try reading. Showed it to a few people and everyone was shocked at the tiny print surrounded by so much white space. I can see fine for reading with no glasses, but I need to pick up a magnifying glass. No I'm not 80.As I said, LOVED the movie, had great hopes for the book, but people will buy it and not end up reading it because of the bad typeface decision. REPRINT THE BOOK SO WE CAN READ IT PLEASE. I cannot give it out as a gift unless it's reprinted.
