Derby Grant Allen was a leading writer of the late Victorian era who wrote on women's issues, science and religion and even tackled science fiction and detective novels. While he is not well known today, he was an influential thinker and writer who lived a colorful life. Allen's biography of Charles Darwin was published in the middle of the 1880s--but, despite that, the book remains interesting today. Allen offers a short look at Darwin's life, his ancestry and science before and after his discoveries. Make no mistake--Allen is sometimes wrong and modern readers will wonder why Allen goes off in the weeds in pondering whether only England could have produced Darwin or if Darwin's family paved the way for the brilliant scientist. But there's much value in this work. Allen provides a brief and still surprisingly useful defense of Darwin from a near contemporary. Readers will find Allen to be a solid and often engaging writer despite his odd asides.

Not for Electric Pressure Cookers or New Cooks By Sandy Toes From the viewpoint of a seasoned cook, but someone new to pressure cooking, some of the recipes were fine, but others had some major problems. 2 of the chicken recipes called for ¼ cup of oil to saute 4-6 chicken breasts, in the pressure cooker. ¼ cup is far too much oil to brown chicken. Yet a similar recipe calls for a more reasonable 2 tbls of oil. Many recipes call for placing oil and meat into the cooker, then turning on the heat. Novice cooks will be surprised to find out that this is a recipe for sticking, unless their pressure cooker has a nonstick pan.At least 2 (perhaps more) of the recipes call for canned ingredients without specifying the can size. Tahitian Chicken specifies "2 cans of orange and pineapple juice". 2 cans of each? What size cans? 6oz cocktail sizes or 12oz? Surely not the big 32oz cans? As a seasoned cook I'm 100% sure it's not the big ones, and likely not 2 each of the 12oz cans. But a new cook? He or she will be lost. Perhaps an even bigger problem occurs with Italian Chicken, which calls for "a can of tomatoes, diced". Here, we've got 2 very common sizes, 15oz and 28oz. Both are commonly used in many recipes. Because I've done my research into PC's and learned that chicken gives off a lot of liquid, I would try the 15oz. But I've no idea if that's correct, it's just a guess. The recipe uses 4 links of sausage, 1 whole cut-up chicken, an onion and 2 green bell peppers. That's a lot of food for a single 15oz can of tomatoes. If this were being cooked in a skillet or braiser, I'd reach for the 28oz can.None of the recipes, not one, give a suggested serving size or even say how many the recipe should feed. This is terrible! Only seasoned cooks will know at a glance how many people a certain amount of food will feed, and how much waste some food will give. 10 pounds of ribs? In order to easily figure this one out, you need to know how much a common rack weighs, and how many people a rack will feed. If you've only eaten ribs, but never cooked them, you'll be lost.A number of the recipes seem to be recycled slow cooker recipes, complete with references to putting things in the slow cooker. Seriously? That's just really sloppy editing. Very few of these recipes specify which release method to use. Some only say "remove the lid".The recipe for Beef Pot Roast instructs us to place the potatoes, carrots and onions into the pressure cooker at the same time as the beef, then cook it for an hour. The vegetables will be puree after an hour!If even one of the recipes had instructions for an ELECTRIC pressure cooker, I'd give it 2-3 stars. I honestly believe the author wants to jump on the ePC bandwagon with a bunch of recycled slow cooker and stovetop PC recipes, none of which she has tested in an electric PC. The Beef Spareribs recipe calls for 10 pounds of ribs. I don't think these will fit in the 6 quart pot that is the most common size ePC.On the plus side, the Kindle format doesn't completely suck and some of the recipes are fine. And it was cheap. But I cannot recommend this cookbook, because too many of the recipes have problems, some minor, some major. And none of them are written for electric press cookers, not one.

I am new to electric pressure cooking (Instant Pot) and am looking for cookbooks that give me the pressure setting, time for cooking, and amount of liquid for the recipes.Most of the recipes in this cookbook have instructions like:"Bring it up to high pressure. Reduce the heat a bit then cook the meal for x amount of time"I personally don't know how you reduce the heat in an electric pressure cooker once it's at pressure.

New Insights and the Old Magic By Jenna St. Hilaire If you're into academic writing on Harry Potter, you're not likely to find a stronger or more enjoyable collection. It includes a wide variety of essays, ranging from thick and scholarly to warm-hearted and fun. Highlights:-a revised and updated version of Kathryn McDaniel's "The Elfin Mystique," which is a feminist take on house-elves that I had personally been meaning to track down and read for years-beautiful character essays on Lupin and the Weasley twins-Hayley and Michael Burson's nostalgic "Surviving the Potter-pocalypse," for those of us who miss our daily dose of fandom a little too much-intriguing thought pieces on Kendra Dumbledore and Native American heritage, Dumbledore's Army and the White Rose Society, and John Locke and the Order of the Phoenix-and a variety of keen insights throughout, more than I can mention.To be fair, I'm right square in the middle of the target audience, and yes, I mean nerd (disclosure: I wrote for the first one [which is also worth a read, in my opinion ;)], and in internet terms I know several of these writers.) But for all the academic reading I've done on the subject of Harry Potter, I found this collection had an impressive amount of new things to say to me. When you're reading along about family ties and you catch your breath because you never saw the force of Arabella Figg's love for Harry before, well--for me, that was a trace of the old magic. Now I want to revisit several of these essays and then read the entire Potter series again ...

Brings issues explored by Rowling right into modern and historical context By Amazon Customer This collection of essays is great for anyone who loves J.K. Rowling's fantastic achievement. It really highlights how scholars such as historians and political scientists use their insight and techniques to reveal dimensions of our own society by delving into Rowling's complex and deep portrayal of characters through their epic struggle. The numerous authors of the individual chapters have a variety of topics, viewpoints, and writing styles, but it all holds together very well. I especially like the update on the house elves cast in the light of The Real Housewives as well as the work on the White Rose Society. It's really cool how these articles explore the power of the powerless and relate them to real world issues that are historical as well as current. Some of the extras, such as the video extras and webinairs are simple, but such good discussions, I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat and listening more than once.

Almost all of them that are not Bloomsbury or Scholastic copies of the seven books are guides to how to best understand JKR's schoolboy stories. A fair number of these are anthologies of academic essays written for other scholars and egghead fans.The best of the lot so far have been the two gathered by Travis Prinzi: Hogshead Conversations and Harry Potter For Nerds 1. Prinzi, unlike the usual editor of such collections, prefers big ideas and bold arguments written in language and paragraphs aimed at clarity and access rather than in the usual professorial class jargon. The combination of courage and plain speech is my strong preference.Harry Potter For Nerds 2, edited by Kathryn McDaniel and Prinzi this time, has the virtues of its predecessor and the added value of being up to date, even topical. The chapters on the twins, Quidditch, ghosts, Squibs, and House-elves were wonderfully out there and well argued; the second section's pieces on veracity and work in Harry Potter and its discussions of historical background (Native America, White Rose Society) and genre expanded my thinking on Rowling's characters and stories.That's all I ask from an essay collection like this. I'm also happy when the physical book itself is attractive and formatted so that it is a pleasure to read, which this one is. I look forward already to 'For Nerds 3.'

But this very well written book is also a coming of age story, a murder mystery, a conservation plea, an ode to hunting and the tale of a young business entrepreneur. One of the author's best!

By Sheree Clark I am a veteran raw foodist, so I hesitated before deciding to get this book: I am really glad I did decide to spring for it! There are some basics included in the book, but because I am also a health coach and teacher, I appreciated the author's supportive and gentle approach and advice for those new to raw and living foods. The recipes are excellent: The Macaroni Cheese recipe is simple and satisfying yet pretty enough to serve to guests. The Pea & Mint Soup I make as a smoothie—I put it into a canning jar with a straw and sip on the way to yoga.It's obvious that the author is based in the UK, as she uses a few terms such as aubergine (eggplant) and courgette (zucchini). But there is a short, helpful glossary in the front of the book, and rather than making for reader hardships, the British terms are actually charming to this Yankee. Likewise with measurements, Ms. Fraser uses both Metric (UK) and Imperial (USA) so there is no chance of a mess-up (or at least no chance of an author-inspired mess-up!).I don't do a lot of reviews. I was compelled to write this one because I find the book approachable (I bought a hard copy, not the digital version). It's also a wonderful size -- fits on a shelf beautifully -- and the photos are stunning. It would be a wonderful gift. 5 thumbs up and I hope there will be a sequel from this author!

The right choice for beginners in Raw lifestyle By Joyce Henderson CONGRATULATIONS FOR SUCH INSPIRED BOOK OF RECIPES AND THANK YOU FOR SHARING IT =) I have no experience at all on raw food and found your chocolate orange mousse in youtube by complete chance when looking for an easy to make recipe. I then found out you had written a whole book of recipes and bought right on the spot. I now have it on my kindle and cant wait to start trying your recipes. I am sure it will make me feel better and especially more energetic and if I can also loose some of the weight accumulated with my pregnancies that I could never loose all the better! So, I shall definitely have to open up my mind to discover this whole new world you are teaching us in your book. Bravo Saskia Fraser!

As a new raw foodist enthusiast, I am still learning but Saskia's recipes, stories and ingredients lists were so easy to follow, despite the ocean between our countries. She acknowledges there may be some differences with ingredients names and measurements among her readers but she accounts for those. I also loved that the recipes were amazing without being too involved. As a single, homeschooling mom-preneur of three, I need fast and easy but ones that also taste delicious. The pictures alone make your taste buds start to water. I have this on my wish list and can't wait to purchase my own copy!

By Just an ordinary guy An interesting autobiographical account of life as a British prisoner of war in Turkey from August 9, 1915 - November 1, 1918. A somewhat dated, but sometimes insightful account of the last years of the Ottoman Empire from a source with an unusual perspective. The life of a POW in Turkey was not a pleasant one, but immeasurably better than that of a prisoner of the Japanese in WWII as portrayed in Unbroken.[[http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0812974492/kolllriceasso]] Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption (Though on a quite similar topic, with many parallels, I found Unbroken to be a far more entertaining read.)The author does provide some accounts of life and times in Turkey during this period, though his relative confinement and seemingly very limited knowledge of Turkish combine to limit his observations. Nevertheless, he presents an interesting, though perhaps often biased, account of the organization of Turkish society and the immediate aftermath of the Armenian expulsion.The book is reasonably well-written, and the Kindle version has been digitized without much in the way of errors, and is no problem to read.

Personally, I didn't truly come to appreciate Wordsworth until I hit my 30s. I read Lyrical Ballads and other poems as an undergrad in college, but at the time, he struck me as a touchy feely tree-hugger. I recall reading lines like, "I wandr'd lonely as a cloud," and thinking to myself how fluffy it all sounded. But the other day, I read the following lines: "The world is too much with us, late and soon, getting and spending, we lay waste our powers." Think about just those two lines for awhile. I sure did. I read this in college and didn't think twice or bat an eye, but I now see this poem, and the larger collection in which it is found, contains profound wisdom about our alienation from nature and the self. If you buy this book, my recommendation is to start with "Lines Written a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey," and read maybe four lines a day, in no particular rush, letting the words and imagery seep in slowly like amber down a tree.

Fantastic book ful of great tips and recipes:) By Marta I have already checked out Howard's previous books, I loved his fast-paced, informational and motivational style a lot and grabbed this book without any hesitation.He delivered again! His solution is focused on creating a reasonable, healthy diet so that you don't go hungry, feel energized and create vibrant health. With this book you will learn about common dieting mistakes that people make when trying to lose weight (I have been there myself a few years ago).Howards also exposes fad diets and marketing trends that prevent you from achieving weight loss success.I give it a bonus star for super tasty and healthy recipes (with pictures). I tried red lentil hummus last night- tasted so good.I don't need to lose weight now, I am happy with my weight actually, but I always like to learn more about healthy eating habits and how to maintain them. Will be checking out Howard's books as they are helpful in my journey.Howard also offers free skype sessions for his readers- really dedicated author and nutritionist!

Efficiency to weight loss By PP This is like a super diet & excercise, planned to take just 14 days by focusing on certain actitivies that are the most efficient in weight loss. I think it's great for the typical person who is used to doing normal workouts and not focusing on diet that much, because it will open your eyes on how you can be much more efficient and spend less time but get better results. It's an overall guide that I expect to be very educational to most people, maybe even the most fitness-focused of us,

Unlike other books that don’t deliver results, this book is simply a must have when it comes to losing weight!The author starts the book by explaining the top diets that you should avoid, it gives proves statements by public people, such as doctors or scientists to sustain the claims and it gives you a very clear picture of why you should avoid those diets!After this the author gives you the alternative to dieting and further, it gives a complete list of foods (from a nutritional point of view) that you can eat to lose weight! This is very useful because I now know how to create my own healthy menu that promotes weight loss!I was very happy to find that with this book I also got straight foreword recipes that I already tried and loved.Also, I was surprised to find out that the most efficient fat burning exercise is also a fun one and the author explains how you can make your body burn fat for up to 48 hours!The techniques on how to stay motivated during and after the program were also very useful and so were the tips on how to incorporate everything I learned in my lifestyle!But the best part of this book is the fact that the author was overweight too and he understands the mind of an overweight person! Also, the author is a certified technician in gastronomy and a former professional athlete therefore, he has solid knowledge about dieting, fitness and weight loss!This was without a dough one of the best books that I read about weight loss and I am happy to say that I already see the desired results on the scale!
