"[...]as it had been left by the hands which reared it, as the Indians seldom, if ever, come so near to the port. The letters of the inscription were still tolerably visible, for the stones suffer little from the action of the atmosphere, and gather but few mosses or lichens in that dry climate, where, during nine months of the year, hardly any rain falls, and where all vegetation is stunted and scanty. The view we obtained from our present standpoint was very limited, the horizon being bounded by a chain of conically shaped hills, flattened at the top, and generally similar in outline and height. The country which they enclosed appeared to consist of a series of irregular plains, broken up by glens, or 'cañons,' as they are aptly called in Spanish, with here and there an isolated hill and an occasional plain of short extent. There were plenty of bushes of a thorny species[...]".

Wandering at the end of the Earth By Joanna Daneman Having just returned from an adventure in Patagonia, I wish I had time to have read this book before I went. But it does provide good background to the places we visited (Punta Arena, Ushuaia, Ainsworth Bay, Navarino Island and some of the glaciers.) Patagonia is the end of the world, the farthest place you can go in the America's before you are 600 miles from hitting Antarctica. It is a romantic place, an absolutely beautiful place and a fearful place with terrible weather and a terrible history; the unique native Patagonians were murdered systematically well into the 20th Century until none were left (after the inevitable diseases to which they had no resistance also took their toll.) The new inhabitants didn't always fare much better. This is a harsh climate, with long, violent winters and not much to defend against the constant wind.Beerbohm's book, published in 1881, is based on his trip from San Julian, Argentina to the small city of Punta Arenas in Chile. His writing can sometimes be astonishingly good, though you must understand, this is from the 1880's and the spelling and style are antiquated. It certainly is worth reading if you intend to travel to South America's farthest points. Previously, I'd only read Darwin's account from the second voyage of the Beagle (published 1839), so this was a much different point of view, forty years later and not by a naturalist, but a travel writer and engineer (still of a scientific frame of mind, but quite a different viewpoint.)

This untouched natural world served as inspiration to many who travel and write about the area. Beerbohm does an excellent job and takes you away to this unbridled land.
