"[...]'Nevermore will Aino's spirit come to thee to be so treated,' and as it spoke the fish dived out of sight. Still Wainamoinen did not give up, but took out his nets and began dragging the waters. And he dragged all the waters in the lands of Lapland and of Kalevala, and caught fish of every sort, only Aino, now the water-maiden, never came into his net. 'Fool that I am,' he said at length, 'surely I was once wise, had at least a bit of wisdom, but now all my power has left me. For I have had Aino in my boat, but did not know until too late that I had even caught her.' And with these words he gave up his search and set off to his home in Kalevala. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Lovely Finnish Fairy Tales By Amazon Customer The rating on this book was a tough call. See, the stories are fantastic, but there are so many tiny annoying things wrong with the formatting that I had to take a star away, alas. The stories are translated and polished excerpts from the Finnish Epics. I don't know how much felicity they have with the original works, but simply as stories they are really good and very well-told. They are intended for an audience of children, and I agree that they are still appropriate for kids, but some of the main characters do die in the book, which is usually avoided in modern children's literature, so I don't know how you would feel about reading it to your kids. So, you know, just a head's up.And now to the formatting! There's an active table of contents (which is not officially accessible). There is also an active list of the illustrations, but--SURPRISE--no illustrations. The page numbers are left in thep. 6 text. Just likep. 7 that. it'sp. 8 SO ANNOYING AGRRRG! There are a few pages of text missing in the middle (the numbers jump fromp. 92 top. 96). And, if that's not enough, there are a handful of footnotes, which are nicely linked, but the note is still located at the end of the 'page,' which is, of course, in the middlep. 9 of the text. The real kicker is that I would still recommend reading this book. The stories really are just that good.Contains the following stories:Father MikkoThe World's Creation and the Birth of WainamoinenThe Planting of the TreesWainamoinen and YoukahainenAino's FateWainamoinen's Search for AinoWainamoinen's Unlucky JourneyWainamoinen's RescueThe Rainbow MaidenIlmarinen Forges the SampoLemminkainen and KyllikkiKyllikki's Broken VowLemminkainen's Second WooingLemminkainen's DeathLemminkainen's RestorationWainamoinen's Boat-BuildingWainamoinen Finds the Lost WordsThe Rival SuitorsIlmarinen's WooingThe Brewing of BeerIlmarinen's Wedding FeastThe Origin of the SerpentThe Unwelcome GuestThe Isle of RefugeThe Frost-FiendKullervo's BirthKullervo and Ilmarinen's WifeKullervo's Life and DeathIlmarinen's Bride of GoldIlmarinen's Fruitless WooingWainamoinen's Expedition and...The Capture of the SampoThe Sampo is Lost in the SeaThe Birth of the Second KanteleLouhi Attempts RevengeLouhi Steals the Sun, the Moon, and FireThe Restoration of the Sun and MoonMariatta and Wainamoinen's Departure

They're not politically correct, they reflect the land from which they originate, and they have a bloody side. Appropriate for anyone who feels comfortable letting their children watch pg 13 movies.
