The subject of corals and coral-reefs is one concerning which much popular misconception has always prevailed. The misleading comparison of coral-rock with the combs of bees and the nests of wasps is perhaps responsible for much of this misunderstanding; one writer has indeed described a coral-reef as being "built by fishes by means of their teeth."

Coral Reefs, by Charles Darwin

About the Author Charles Darwin was an English naturalist and author best-known for his revolutionary theories on the origin of species, human evolution, and natural selection. A life-long interest in the natural world led Darwin to neglect his medical studies and instead embark on a five-year scientific voyage on the HMS Beagle, where he established his reputation as a geologist and gathered much of the evidence that fuelled his later theories.A prolific writer, Darwin s most famous published works include The Voyage of the Beagle, On the Origin of Species, The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, and The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals. Darwin died in 1882, and in recognition of his contributions to science, is buried in Westminster Abbey along with John Herschel and Isaac Newton.

The diagrams were scanned from the originals but were of a small size making some of the small text illegible. Perhaps the original pictures were larger. Some companies that reproduce old books use optical character recognition (OCR) that copies the text but not the drawings and then don't do anything to add the drawings. They may even not format the text properly. A company called General Books published by Macmillan And Company has done this. Other companies scan the pages so as to best capture the text, which is not always best for the pictures which may have shading, and just reproduce what they have scanned including any underlining of text by the books owners and any other marks most of which could have been removed. One such book, The Variation of Animals and Plants Under Domestication Part One by Charles Darwin published by Kessinger Publishing's Rare Reprints, mentions stripes on a drawing of a horse, which is rather dark all over, where no such stripes are visible but when I looked the book up on the net the drawing is far lighter with clear stripes. One company who's photos seem acceptable, although pale, is Bibliolife at least in Volume II of Alfred Russel Wallace's My Life: A Record of Events and Opinions and who's drawings in Charles Darwin's The Formation of Vegetable Mould, Through the Action of Worms, With Observations on their Habits are also OK, although I have not seen the originals to make a comparison. New York University Press's Charles Darwin book Movements and Habits of Climbing Plants also has drawings that are OK, although again I have not seen the originals. People looking for reprints of old books should try to find out the quality of any drawings and even if drawings in original printings are included before buying.

It's a slightly cleaned-up version of the free public domain book available elsewhere, but neither of them has any graphics of any kind. Good ebook quality, but Darwin refers to his figures quite a bit, and it's pretty hard to know what he's talking about without them.I mistakenly thought the other reviewer was also reviewing the Kindle version, but note that he's reviewing the HARDCOVER version.
