This year, I reread it for my own enjoyment. Benet has a tallent with words and their rythem. He caputres the words, the cadendences, and the music of all dialects of American speech so masterfully that it baffles me that he has not been given more attention.The book provides a kalidioscopic view of both north and south. It provides drama, pathos, romance. It has served as source material for many later writers, some of whom gave Benet credit.Oh, the Eddie Arnold "The Riders in the Sky" had its birth here; the biography of Lincoln is a prose version of the poem. The characters are universal, representing whole segments of our culture. Americans who have not read this masterpiece have shortchanged their education.
