"[...]without sleep, so as to show a light for people going home. She was troubled about it all, and said to herself, 'I'll just go down and see how matters stand.' So, when the dark end of the month came round, she stepped down out of the sky, wrapped from head to foot in her black travelling cloak with the hood drawn over her bright golden hair. For a moment she stood at the edge of the marshes, looking this way and that. Everywhere, as far as she could see, was the dismal bog, with pools of black water, and gnarled, fantastic-looking snags sticking up here and there amid the dank growth of weeds and grasses. The tales are clever and worth a read, although I did find it to be a bit dull. The stories would be ideal for an audience of children, though possibly slightly older ones, since some of them are long. There is an active table of contents, though there are no illustrations. Page numbers are left in the text.Contains the following stories:Snegorotchka (Russian)The Buried Moon (English)White Caroline and Black Caroline (Flemish)The Seven Conquerors of the Queen of the Mississippi (Belgian)The Serpent Prince (Italian)The Hind of the Wood (French)Ivan and the Chestnut Horse (Russian)The Queen of the Many-Colored Bedchamber (Irish)The Blue Bird (French)Bashtchelik (Or, Real Steel) (Serbian)The Friar and the Boy (English)The Green Serpent (French)Urashima Taro (Japanese)The Fire Bird (Russian)The Story of the Bird Feng (Chinese)

A Different and Interesting Selection By EmEnz If you love fairy tales and are looking for a different selection from the ordinary, this book should should please. It contains 15 tales from Russia, England, Flanders, Belgium, Italy, France, Ireland, Serbia, Japan and China. While some have appeared in other forms I found it an intriguing and original selection that was very well told. Alas, there are no Dulac illustrations. Even in miniature black and white that would have been a bonus.

Reviews do not match digital book By Everyday Reader There are no illustrations in this digital book only bookmarks where an illustration should have been. Also the publisher, Library of Alexandria, states in the description that there is an interactive table of contents and this is not true. I was disappointed in this purchase. Gave it 3 stars for the stories though I have not read them yet.
