2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Soul-stirring, inspirational, entertaining, instructive story By Maggie Jarpey I can't say enough good things about this book. The humor, though sparing and low-key, is delicious. Some of the characters are so lovable and others so annoying, and all of them so real that you have trouble remembering they are fictional ones. The account of the devout Jewish boy who comes to believe in Jesus Christ as the Messiah, and therefore, in his words, as his "king," caused me to stop reading and enjoy the emotional tears that it produced. I say it is also "instructive" because I think it gives wise, godly advice on how to help people mired in poverty.This is my second read, and will look forward to a third one after a little passage of time. Someone should report on the irrelevance of the other review, the two-star one. I will try.

The books are written in an anciently dramatic way, think clasped hands and quivering brow, but if you can get past that, the storyline is enjoyable.

About the Author Henri opened his own catering business and quickly became recognized as one of the go-to caterers for mouthwatering BBQ and more. Moreover, He began entering his BBQ in local contests then around the tri-state area. Not only did he have a lot of fun, he earned the respect of his peers and gained many more followers. A nice book for a starting point on looking up ciders in the UK.

The UK is cider central (apparently with a little acknowledged help from our friends over the Irish Sea). This book is interesting and informative, though in my copy the listings appear to jump from Three Counties to London missing out Dorset, Hampshire and Sussex!

The recipes are easy to follow and there is a linked Table of Contents near the front of the book.

Oldie but Goodie By Bay Bridge Sue Written when the US finally got involved in WW 1 (yes, the war to end all wars lol) this book makes very good use of the available and plentiful materials to make economical and "stretchy" meals to keep people's energy up and save resources to send to the boys "over there". If you are interested in historical cookbooks, this IS the book for you. I read it... and liked it... and better, USE it!

I read it in two days. More people need to know about this book. It's a real page-turner that will keep your interest all the way through. (Fans of CSI will cringe in horror, though, as multitudes off the street trample around the crime scene and get their fingerprints all over the murder weapon. Ah, the days before forensic evidence.) Seriously, though, read the book.

Since few have heard of either the book or author nowadays, it is an indication of the fleeting nature of popularity. Will people in 2112 be wondering who John Grisham or James Patterson were?In fact, all the top ten authors of 1912 are practically unknown nowadays, which led me on a minor quest to read these books and get a feel for what was popular a century ago. Of course, popularity does not equal quality. The Just and the Unjust was the third of these bestsellers I read, and easily the best of the three.The story is centered on John North, a young man who has gambled away his inherited money and has decided to leave his small town of Mount Hope, Ohio to seek his fortune and be able to marry the woman he loves (and who loves him). Meanwhile, his friend, the drunken lawyer, Marshall Langham is facing ruin at the hands of the shady gambler, Andy Gilmore. To get out of debt, Langham will kill and rob the town's wealthiest man.Circumstances and acts of deceit will leave North accused of the crime. Gilmore knows better, but he doesn't like North and likes controlling Langham. Soon, North will face a trial and hanging if found guilty. His alibi involves Langham's wife, but North doesn't want to potentially dishonor her, so he relies on his faith that an innocent man would never be convicted. Gilmore, however, will do whatever's necessary to make sure the frame sticks.Like many works of this period, the narrative and dialogue are sometimes a little over-the-top, but overall, this book has strong writing. This is a story of good and evil (or, to use the title, just and unjust), but there are shades of gray that are not always found in books of this time. Even Langham is not wholly bad; in fact, the true villain is actually Gilmore. And the supposed good guys have flaws of their own that make them more solid characters.Kester lived a relatively short life, dying when he was just forty-one in 1911. Sadly, this was right when his career was really taking off: both this book and the 1911 book The Prodigal Judge were bestsellers. Is this book a classic worthy of the immortality that description should bestow? No, but this is a good crime novel with a nice level of suspense.
