By Susan Shapiro Joseph Alexiou's impressive new book "Gowanus" is an informative, funny, fantastic colloquial history - everything you didn't think you wanted to know about Brooklyn's (disgusting) Curious Canal somehow rendered engaging, real, relatable. A triumph!

This book is really well written, fun, and informative. I love the period illustrations that accompany it, and learning about how the area was built up. Genuinely an interesting read, and one of the better presents I've ever received!

A truly fascinating look at the history of Brooklyn By Aanna Who would have thought that a history book about an industrial area would make for a fun read? I've always enjoyed reading about the history of New York, and what I found on the internet only whetted my appetite for more about this sometimes morbidly fascinating waterway. "Gowanus" was everything I hoped: it was engaging and informative -- telling the story of the canal with detail and thorough research but without turning into a moldy old textbook. Highly recommended.
