Home preserving was once regarded as the only way of ensuring an adequate food supply for the family from harvest through to the winter and the following year. Today, however, with our busy work schedules taking up much of our precious time, and the availability and variety of supermarket products conveniently at hand, home canning isn't quite the necessity it was 100 years ago. But there has lately been a shift towards growing our own food, reducing waste and becoming more self-sufficient, and home preserving would seem to go hand-in- hand with these not-so-new ideas, while the health conscious among us, and those with food allergies or special dietary requirements, will find they can control or eliminate the sometimes unnecessary additives found in commercially prepared foods.

There are many ways of preserving food, with freezing probably the newest and simplest of these methods. But there are older and possibly more satisfying techniques which are also touched upon in Home Preserving for those who love to stick to homemade, from jam and jelly-making and pickling, ice cream and sorbet-making to soups, stews and filling creating. These things are all relatively simple to do, but the results will gladden the heart and save money as well.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Incomplete canning instructions--returned! By Joanne I never send anything back to Amazon, but this book is an exception. Not for beginners first of all, not by a longshot. There is absolutely NO explanation of how to properly can at all, I mean nothing. Each recipe ends with the instruction to "screw the lids on firmly, can the jars (see page 19 and following pages, then store as previously recommended). On Page 19 there is nothing useful there, no instructions on how to do anything to can your preserves, they are purely encyclopedic-type passages, defining what chutney is, what conserves are, but not how to make them! I am aghast. I am canning 1 1/2 yrs now and have a good 8 or so books on canning...and no reputable canning book leaves you to your own devices and guesswork as this one does. The book appears fabulous with glossy, colorful illustrations, but the love stops there. The recipes list ingredients and measurements and so on, but never tells you how long to process the jars for safety! This is crucial to know; it is unacceptable to proceed with any shelf canning w/o this knowledge. Size of jars and the ingredients contained in those jars all determine various safe processing times. How are we to know this if the recipe doesn't state this? Dangerous. Just a BIG opportunity missed. These 'recipes' make huge portions too, most often eight 8oz jars. That in itself wouldn't have mattered, recipes can be halved. But considering you can't approach the recipe w/o the info of how long to cook it, you won't make it anyway, you shouldn't anyway, for safety's sake. Home Preserving is the title, but don't be fooled. It is not a 'how to' book. It's a "how not to" book if you enjoy Russian Roulette games! The non-Amazon seller where I got this book also charges restocking fees and won't refund your shipping. To make matters worse, you need to spend more money to send it back, and they didn't have the courtesy to send me a prepaid mailing envelope...if not for Amazon's direct intervention to help me out, I would have lost everything.. Without a 'sneak peak' into this book, I couldn't possibly know just how badly these recipes were written. I ended up wasting my money and my time to remedy the return of this book. I hope I can help someone else avoid the same fate.

Lots of exciting recipes By Dan I own several canning books and although now is winter and the ingredients are not in season I like to have a look and prepare for the summer. The “Home Preserving” cookbook contains a lot of exciting recipes and it will be a good investment. There are recipes for making all sorts of preserves: jams, marmalades, jellies, butters and curds, chutneys, relishes, sauces, pickles, soups, stews and fillings, ice creams and sorbets. In the beginning you will learn about the required kitchen equipment, safety tips, how to choose the fruits and vegetables. Also tips and tricks for successful preserving various types of foods are included. The recipes are paired by beautiful images. In concussion: a useful book with lots of recipes which will teach you how to preserve a large variety of foods. Also it is suited for beginners because the recipes are simple and the directions are clear.

Fifty years after his death, many consider Dylan Thomas to have been the greatest lyric poet of his age. Andrew Sinclair, in this masterly biography, explains how Thomas attracted a new mass audience, and discusses the influences on his work that stemmed from the divisions and tensions of the poet’s Welsh heritage. Sinclair captures the tragic and exuberant story of Thomas’s personal life, his vision of Wales and the writing of his masterpiece, Under Milk Wood, the brawling and boozing in Fitzrovia during the 1930s and 40s, and the last American tour of the 50s, that ended with his death. ‘Dylan the Bard’ is the definitive biography of this great poet. ‘Mr Sinclair writes beautifully and analyses the poet’s development with clarity and humour.’ KEITH BAXTER, Daily Telegraph  ‘Sinclair shares with his subject a lively, paronomastic prose style, and his account of an instinctively respectable psyche afflicted with the frightening gift of poetry makes fascinating and most enjoyable reading.’ SEAN MACMAHON, Irish Independent ‘You have picked the plums and touched the living quick of the Dylan situation with penetrating insight … What baffles me is from whence first did your passion and your understanding of your subject come?’ Caitlin Thomas  Andrew Sinclair is a novelist, historian, critic and filmmaker. He was a Founding Member of Churchill College, Cambridge, and has taught and travelled across the world. He made the film, now regarded as a classic, of Under Milk Wood. His recent film, Dylan on Dylan, of the life of the poet will be released on DVD with Under Milk Wood in 2003. He lives in London and is married to the writer Sonia Melchett. Dylan the Bard: A Life of Dylan Thomas, by Andrew Sinclair

From Booklist The most enjoyable literary biographies reflect the vigor and beauty of the subject's work, and prolific Sinclair--a historian, novelist, and director of the 1973 film version of Under Milk Wood--harmonizes quite naturally with the oceanic music of Thomas' poetry. Free to eschew the reportorial for the interpretative because Thomas' life is so thoroughly chronicled, he concentrates on seeking the source for both Thomas' glorious writing and self-destructiveness in his "divided heritage" and bifurcated temperament. Sinclair sees Thomas as a descendant of the English conquest of the Welsh bardic tradition, a man forever careening between the quiet of the country and the clamor of the city and its pubs, a puritan in bohemian's clothing, a husband and father who wanted only to be mothered, and a poet whose writing benefited tremendously from his wartime work as a documentary scriptwriter. Laced with the revelations of personal reminiscences and heretofore unpublished letters, Sinclair's fresh and vivid portrait captures the ambience of Thomas' chaotic life, the essence of his roiling spirit, and the indelible power of his timeless writing. By Ikkyu Jones Not as comprehensive as some Dylan Thomas biographies (Ferris, for example), but an insightful view into the complexities of one of the 20th Century's most powerful bards.

By Cprimack I selected this book because I love reading books about writers, not because of any affinity for Dylan Thomas. However, I am very glad that I read it. It was an enjoyable and easy read. I am familiar with U.S. History, but I very much enjoyed Sinclair's history of the poet and of Dylan Thomas. I was unfamiliar with a lot of this material. I also enjoyed how so much of Thomas' poetry is included throughout the book and we see how an artist was inspired to write that poetry by the people around him and the things that were occurring around him. Very enjoyable. This galley was provided to me by NetGalley and the Publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I am glad I found this book. It has so many delicious looking and creative recipes that I can choose from like the creamy spinach and meatballs, the chicken gyro bowl, the dry-rubbed Asian spare ribs, the bahn mi pork, the coffeee braised beef brisket and many more. The recipes are well presented with easy to follow unstructions. Every recipes has nutrition info per serving

I was actually more after the recipe but I consider it a great bonus that these are low-carb, healthier ones. I'm most curious at the Coffee-Braised Beef Brisket and the Meat Lovers' Pizza Soup, I wonder how they would taste. But I'm actually interested to give everything in the list a try. It would've been nicer if the author included an estimated preparation and cooking time as I find it most helpful with slow cooker recipes, like the other books that I have. Other than that, this would've been perfect.

This book is the 5th in the series of low carb recipes, and I've found a couple favs. One is the Eggplant Bolognese. I don't care for turkey, so I'm going to take the author's advice and leave it out. The other recipe that caught my eye was the Kielbasa and Cabbage. Love them both!

In these days of an aging traditional audience, shrinking attendance, tightened budgets, increased competition, and exponential growth in new types of communication methods, America’s house museums need to take bold steps and expand their overall purpose beyond those of the traditional museum. They need not only to engage the communities surrounding them, but also to collaborate with visitors on the type and quality of experience they provide. This book is a groundbreaking manifesto that calls for the establishment of a more inclusive, visitor-centered paradigm based on the shared experience of human habitation. It draws inspiration from film, theater, public art, and urban design to transform historic house museums while providing a how-to guide for making historic house museums sustainable, through five primary themes: communicating with the surrounding community, engaging the community, re-imagining the visitor experience, celebrating the detritus of human habitation, and acknowledging the illusion of the shelter’s authenticity. Anarchist's Guide to Historic House Museums offers a wry, but informed, rule-breaking perspective from authors with years of experience and gives numerous vivid examples of both good and not-so-good practices from house museums in the U.S.

Anarchist's Guide to Historic House Museums, by Franklin D Vagnone, Deborah E Ryan

Review

"The tone of the book is blunt, but I think that is necessary. The whole historic-preservation industry is so deeply rooted in either a 'Jackie Kennedy' faux-gentility or a dead-white-men's 'this is how history is done, boys!' approach to everything."― Ulysses Dietz, Chief Curator and Curator of Decorative Arts, The Newark Museum

"I enjoyed reading this book very much. It is written in accessible language, making complex matters very approachable. The authors have also provided a lot of concrete examples, so there is little guessing at what they are trying to say. Virtually anyone in the cultural world could take this book and find elements that are relevant to his or her work."― Lisa Ackerman, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, World Monuments Fund

"If you are a traditionalist, you might think that Vagnone and Ryan are heretics, blasphemers or, at the very least, bomb throwers. You may be right. Many of the ideas in this book go against the standard rules of museum practice. But this is, for many historic house museums, a time of crisis, and crises require bold action and creative thinking. The Anarchist s Guide encourages us to think differently, to challenge conventional procedures, to put visitors first, to take risks."― From the Foreword by Gretchen Sullivan Sorin, The Cooperstown Graduate Program

"A book that is precisely what the doctor ordered for a patient on life support .It is not overstating the situation to opine that Vagnone and Ryan, in the "Anarchist s Guide," have launched an important campaign for change that might well determine the future of the past by starting a discussion that is long overdue."― Taylor Stoermer, The History Doctor

"The Anarchist's Guide is a timely reminder to think long and hard about what and who museums are for, and about what expertise this requires. Connoisseurship alone does not a great museum make. It is the careful balance of objects, buildings, and people that brings it to life." ― Katy Barrett, Royal Museums Greenwich, Apollo Magazine

I am neither an academic nor a museum professional and only came across this book by accident. However, as a layman I'm very much interested in museums in general, including historic houses and communities, of which my wife and I have visited many and worked for both as a professional (my wife, as a history museum exhibit and program director) and volunteer (myself, as an art museum docent).Let's also be clear that the Guide is not a comprehensive "how-to" on running historic houses. Most notably it does not deal with financial issues or with mission concepts, at least not directly. Rather, focus is on the "visitor experience" and how to draw audiences to historic houses. If I had to pick one phrase to describe what the authors think of most historic house operations today, it would be "too anal" (as borrowed from Freud). The heart of this small book is 132 pages of practical thinking and examples of how to make historic houses more attractive and welcoming to visitors, both by reaching out to the communities in which they live, and by providing memorable experiences to their clients (visitors). Those pages are book-ended by sections that formalize the authors' approach, yet overall the writing and ideas are readily accessible to those outside the academy, for whom the book has obviously been written. The authors point out that historic houses are seeing declining visitor numbers, and their purpose is to help these institutions reverse that trend. They also admit that while some of their ideas are research-based, others are mere conjecture, and they invite the museum community to contribute to their ongoing "anarchist" project.Although the "anarchist" tag is catchy, I'd say Ryan and Vagnone are radical rather than "anarchic." I hate to use this phrase because it's become a cliche, but what they are really asking house museum people to do is "think outside the box" (house). Ideas are divided into five categories: (1) reach out to, which means become involved with, the surrounding community; (2) focus on communications, understanding that communication with visitors is a two-way street (what your visitors tell you is just as important, if not more so, than what you tell them); (3) somewhat related to the number (2) as I see it, make the historic house a shared experience in which visitors are invited to participate in the house experience through their experiences; (4) take a holistic approach to the house and its objects/artifacts (and its history, implicitly); and (5) loosen up and take a practical, realistic approach to preservation and hard assets. I hope this is a fair summary.Clearly (again) not all that the authors suggest is going to translate perfectly to every historic house -- some might think, "Whoa, we can't do that," and in some cases they'd likely be right. But, think hard about all this "stuff," that's the message I get. Finally, I'd add that many of the authors' suggestions, such as encouraging your tour guides or docents to go NUDE, are translatable to other kinds of museums. Now, if that doesn't make you want to read the book, I'm not sure what will.

The best way to address this deepening crisis, Vagnone and Ryan contend, is by creatively engaging one’s neighbours on their own terms. Through their classes and workshops the authors have tracked visitor experience with amazing specificity by way of video mapping; movement and activity diagramming; Imagination, Excitement and Energy Graphs; Sound Mapping and Anarchist Tags. The book is full of innovative techniques for visitor engagement, and includes a chart for evaluating the state of your museum in historic site in 32 categories.Strongly recommended for all cultural institutions seeking innovative ways of fostering new audiences.Full review here: http://www.smallmuseums.ca/museum-anarchist-toolkit/Author interview here: http://www.smallmuseums.ca/audiocast-1-museum-anarchism-masterclass/

Our Group is working on a house museum relating toDr. James Still; his life and times in Medford, NJ. in the 1800's. Nice to know we are not alone and that many others out there have the sameconcerns and challenges.
