Algonquin Kid: A great read for the theater geek or the New York history buff By Mark B As a fan of theater, we're accustomed to stories about composers, shows, and theaters. The Algonquin Kid by Michael Colby provides a unique perspective of one of the hang-outs of playrights, composers, performers and glitterati. And it's not just from an outsider: It's from the perspective of the young grandson of the owner of the Algonquin Hotel. The book is liberally peppered with anecdotes and photographs and celebrities famous (the Kennedys, Marilyn Monroe, etc) and the not so famous. A great read and a nice gift for the theater geek in your family.

Fantastic stories and insights on the world of the upper social theatrical and interesting clientele who stayed and visited the Algonquin. A MUST read for all! Magnificent story telling...in truth as well as the dramatic.Well done Mr Colby...the artistic lyricist!So well executed..it is hard to put it down. So many interesting stories,but the Marilyn Monroe I think is my favorite! Read the book and find out why..you won't be disappointed. From the "mouth of babes" as the saying goes..here it is form the "Kid" who lived it.BRAVO!

Michael Colby, grandson of deceased Algonquin owners Ben and Mary Bodne, tells a story that of interest to anyone into New York theater history. (Folks interested in colorful, dysfunctional Jewish family dynamics may also find the book interesting, even if they're not theater buffs.) What Michael saw growing up at the legendary Algonquin Hotel was not only New York history, but American cultural history. He writes the book in a way that weaves fascinating stories of the world's theatrical giants with his own poignant family history. This is an informative and fun read.

I had no idea how many chemicals I encounter in my daily life that are so terrible they should be avoided at all costs. This book revealed so many tips and methods to avoid harsh chemicals out of my house and my life. So detailed and descriptive. Truly grateful I came upon this book!

Mountford I've long been a fan of Lonely Planet travel guides. They're especially good at ferreting out the hidden treasures, the out-of-the-way places that are worth the effort to see. So I was curious to see what they'd do with what is essentially a picture book, something a little out of the ordinary for them.The result is a beautiful collection of photos from every continent. You get no more than one stunning photo per page, and some are spread across two pages -- no distracting "crowding" here. The book itself is large: 10 3/4" x 14 1/4" -- a true "coffee table" book -- and includes a ribbon page marker.I found myself wandering through the pages, "armchair traveling," as it were, to the wild places featured for each continent. What makes a place wild? It would seem that "wild" is in the eye of the beholder -- or the photographer, in this case, but every photo features a place that is "off the beaten path," even if not totally untouched by humans. It's easy to get drawn into the photos of places I probably will never see in person in my lifetime (Antarctica, for example).The book comes with a partial dust jacket that is finished with a slightly "pearlized" effect. The hidden treasure, however, is inside the dust jacket. Remove it from the book, unfold it, and you have a large poster-size photo of a jaguar in a tree. Just like the wild places in the book, this is a hidden gem. Lovely touch, that.This would be a delightful gift for any friend or family member who enjoys the discovery associated with travel -- even armchair travelers. It's beautifully finished, and would look great on any coffee table (or nightstand).

Their travel books are used by many, and at times are the most used travel books. I particularly like their books on England and Germany. Now, Lonely Planet has put together a collection of photographs from across the world.This is a large book, often called a coffee table book. A book that you might want to look at often. It covers all of the continents, and the book primarily shows photos of animals. However, there are beautiful photos of scenery covering most of the world. The book is 256 pages, and contains a summary of the photos and the photographers. I think that my grandchildren will really enjoy looking through this book. There are captions of the photos, but not much writing or information is imparted. I think a little more information about the scenery, sources, and the animals would have made this a more enjoyable book. The photos do pique your interest, but left me wanting more.Recommended. 11-10-15

Filled with exquisite photographs of animals and natural landscape scenes that will leave you amazed, this large coffee table book is as much fun for children as it is for adults.Divided into seven sections – one for each continent – “Wild World” includes only a small, bolded annotation identifying the location of a photograph and, rather than a full discussion about any subject matter, only a few words describing. This is unobtrusive text does not detract from the photograph. A more complete, but still abbreviated, discussion of each photograph, the page reference, and a credit identifying the photographer conclude the book.This wonderful volume deserves five-stars and more! It will make an excellent gift for those you love – or as a treat for yourself.

It is an interesting concept and the recipes from this book that I tried so far are delicious, like Spring chicken in a pot and Leek and pork pot roast.

One Pot Cook Book By Harriet Meyers I have just skimmed One Pot Cook Book and am distressed to find that the author uses ml's, grams, mugs and centimeters to instruct on amounts of ingredients. Since I am unfamiliar with these measurements, which are more frequently used in non-American cook books, I find myself unable to decipher what might otherwise be tempting recipes. I feel there should have been an indication of the terminology in which ingredients are measured in the initial book description. The author's choice of measurements are not common in most recipes.Very, very disappointed.

She has led a sheltered life after her parents death and cannot understand why these two men are so interested in her, which she'll come to find out why.Danger lurks around every corner and Rachael questions everyone's actions, including her family, which leads her to make a few dire decisions and puts her life at risk.Ms. Silva's first novel in this series of three books grabbed my attention and kept me interested. I loved the characters and their back stories. The pacing keeps the plot moving forward and involved me as a reader that I didn't guess the plot twists coming. I anxiously await book two, which I can't always say, because I HAVE TO know what happens to all of these characters. Wonderful book from a writer who knows exactly where to take her readers. The only reason I gave it four stars and not five is because I wanted a bit more and I rarely give five stars.
0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An interesting take on vampires By Chelsea The story line of this book was great and there is a lot of potential here. I liked the author's version of vampires and how the families came to be and interacted, as well as the challenges Rachael faced in finding her place in her family, vampire society and in finding her perfect suitor. I really enjoyed the romance between Alexander and Rachael and its development and challenges, as well as the fact that we got to see both of their perspectives. Unfortunately, even with being given the correct version, there is still editing to be done. Perhaps this is due to a language barrier, but there were times when the sentence structure was off or things were phrased in a way that doesn't sound like a native speaker. I also wished Rachael spoke more like an 18 year old. At times she spoke in a manner that was way too mature for a character that had just turned 18. I also didn't enjoy that Rachael kept acknowledging the fact that things were turning points or that it was the last time for something. It's kind of implied just by the fact that there's a story going on and it didn't need to be said as much, if at all. I definitely think that with some additional editing this story has the potential to be even more spectacular. Ruth Pryor has held teaching and research posts at the University of California, Los Angeles; the University of Washington, Seattle; Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford; and the University of Wales. She is the editor of Letters to Vernon Watkins and The Collected Poems of Vernon Watkins.
Gwen Watkins taught at the University of Washington and the Extra-Mural Department of the University College of Swansea. Her publications include Portrait of a Friend, about Dylan Thomas and Vernon Watkins, and Dickens in Search of Himself.

They have been effortless yet leave so much to be desired. The meals come out low in taste or, to make up for that, with far too much sodium. Quick Slow Cooking changed everything for me! This cookbook is full of incredibly tasty meals that are scrumptious, easy, quick to prepare and healthy.

By gts I bought this cookbook and really liked some of the recipes such as the chicken tagine with olives & lemon, lemon chicken and rice soup, and tangy braised brisket. The honey-ginger pork w/ braised kale was horrible, however. What a waste!Just a note: There are at least 20, if not more, of the exact same recipes in this book as in the William Sonoma Essentials of Slow Cooking. Pretty much same cookbook with a different cover!

I like that this book has a lot of curry dishes and recipes with a lot of spices which I really like and the aroma is great when I cook them in the slow cooker.

Great reads without all of today's garbage verbiage. They are centered around school girls in the 1920's.
