Shapes of Clay, by Ambrose Bierce

About the Author Ambrose Bierce was an American writer, critic and war veteran. Bierce fought for the Union Army during the American Civil War, eventually rising to the rank of brevet major before resigning from the Army following an 1866 expedition across the Great Plains. Bierce s harrowing experiences during the Civil War, particularly those at the Battle of Shiloh, shaped a writing career that included editorials, novels, short stories and poetry. Among his most famous works are An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, The Boarded Window, Chickamauga, and What I Saw of Shiloh. While on a tour of Civil-War battlefields in 1913, Bierce is believed to have joined Pancho Villa s army before disappearing in the chaos of the Mexican Revolution.

The pagination is not the same, so Dodo press did some reformatting. Wood edition is xiv, 396 pages. Dodo is 323 pages with preliminary pages unnumbered. I see there also a recent edition, but I have the paperbound Dodo Press. A long book of poetry, with epigrams, sarcastic eulogies, and much cant. I would say mostly bad poetry that strains to rhyme, but occasionally good verses that made me laugh with his mordant, gallows humor. His eulogies are of the I'm glad you're dead you rascal you variety, insulting the dead with the tone of giving a speech over the grave. What is irritating that is that a great many of the poems might be only four lines long and a whole page is dedicated to those few lines, thus wasting much space. However some poems ran as much as five pages and were narrative poems. I enjoyed his morbid poetry (on death, mortality, corruption, sin), striking in the direction of the Romantic poets of the early 19th century and of the many depressing poems by Edgar Allan Poe. However, Bierce is no Poe, and his poems do not stand up. They rhyme poorly, often do not make sense, and are often bad. He displays his notorious bitter misanthropy and his cynical contempt of humans and their ways. Some are anti-war, many are anti-patriotism, usually aimed at politicians, bankers, speculators, soldiers, and women. Bierce poured his bile on everything he set his eyes on. Much in Shapes of Clay are nonsense verses along the lines of Lewis Carroll, but more often he would write poems of gloom, death, and horror. Much of the poetry is date, satiric barbs aimed at now forgotten persons, and the book has no notes as to whom the object of attack was, Though I recognize the poems were often bad, I still enjoyed it, as Ambrose Bierce has always been a favorite author of mine.
