"[...]really ominous news, the excitability of his French schoolmates had disappeared. They were quiet; far quieter than American boys would have been in the same case, he thought. "But this is not France's quarrel," said Frank. "She cares nothing for Servia." "Servia? Bah! No one cares for Servia—except Austria and Russia! Servia is only an excuse. Austria wants to get some ports and Russia wants them, too, or wants a friendly country to have them. But I will tell you why it means war, Frank, my friend. It is because Guillaume, their[...]".

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Interesting views of World War I, for boys By Dr. Glenn W. Briggs While discussing the value of reading, and "books I had read as a child," with my grandson this evening, this title immediately came to mind. I received "The Boy Scouts on the Trail" as an eighth birthday gift from my own grandmother in 1946, who encouraged us to read at every opportunity. I loved boys' adventure stories and the classics, and this was one of my favorites.Well, I decided to hit the Internet and see if it would still exist, and I found it through the Gutenberg Press! Written specifically for teenage boys, this is a very fast-moving adventure, set in pre-World War I France, and the first months of the conflict. It is very readable, and narrates the adventures of two Boy Scout cousins - one French and one American - who inadvertantly get caught up in the early stages of the war. As the reader will discover, the book is quite historically accurate, in terms of the author weaving into the boys' adventures the important events and individuals who are featured in historical accounts of the war. There is one rather glaring error in the book's credits, as this book could not possibly have been written in 1911, since it cites events that happened during 1914 and 1915. It is likely to have been written in 1919.
