0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. personal history of early British presence in Calcutta By RPG You wouldn't want to pay for it, but the Kindle edition is free. It's not great literature or anything, but rather a free-form reminiscence. However, if you know Calcutta (Kolkata), it is in some ways a vivid picture of early colonial times now dead and gone and long forgotten. For example, the author remembers American ships arriving with ice (at one time all of Kolkata's ice was supplied from New England lakes) and apples. Or the tales of dancing at the governor-general's balls. Or the story of the governor-general who was reviled (justly, in the author's opinion) because he wanted to allow Englishmen to be tried in courts with native judges (the horror!)Unfortunately the Kindle edition has no pictures---probably the print edition does.
