Bem-vindo ao universo extraordinario de Machado de Assis, um dos maiores vultos da literatura Luso-Brasileira de sempre. Dom Casmurro é um romance escrito por Machado de Assis em 1899. Foi escrito para sair diretamente em livro, o que ocorreu em 1900, embora com data do ano anterior. Completa a "trilogia realista" de Machado de Assis, ao lado de Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas e Quincas Borba, tendo sido esses dois escritos primeiramente em folhetins. Seu personagem principal é Bento Santiago, o narrador da história que, contada em primeira pessoa, pretende "atar as duas pontas da vida", ou seja, unir relatos desde sua mocidade até os dias em que está escrevendo o livro. Entre esses dois momentos Bento escreve sobre suas reminiscências da juventude, sua vida no seminário, seu caso com Capitu e o ciúme que advém desse relacionamento, que se torna o enredo central da trama. Ambientado no Rio de Janeiro do Segundo Império, se inicia com um episódio que seria recente em que o narrador recebe a alcunha de "Dom Casmurro", daí o título do romance. Machado de Assis o escreveu utilizando ferramentas literárias como a ironia e uma intertextualidade que alcança Schopenhauer e sobretudo a peça Otelo de Shakespeare. Ao longo dos anos, Dom Casmurro, com seus temas como o ciúme, a ambiguidade de Capitu, o retrato moral da época e o caráter do narrador, recebeu inúmeros estudos, adaptações para outras mídias e sofreu inúmeras interpretações, desde psicológicas e psicanalíticas na crítica literária dos anos 30 e dos anos 40, passando pelo feminismo na década de 1970 até sociológicas da década de 1980, e adiante. Creditado como um precursor do Modernismo e de ideias posteriormente escritas por Sigmund Freud, o livro influenciou os escritores John Barth, Graciliano Ramos e Dalton Trevisan e é considerado por alguns a obra-prima de Machado de Assis. Além de ter sido traduzido para outras línguas, continua a ser um de seus livros mais famosos e é considerado um dos mais fundamentais de toda a literatura brasileira. A useful, biographical source By Katherine Parr McL.Cote offers an in-depth account of the lives of Charles Stewart Parnell's family, focusing on his mother's heritage, her life and that of his sisters. Of special interest are McL.Cote's account of the workings of Famine relief in the US and the role Fanny and Anna played in collecting and distributing funds. These activist sisters contributed significantly to Irish Famine relief, and Anna continued in her role as a national activist during the rent evictions that followed. Added to the biographical narrative are selections of poetry written by the sisters. Although sometimes tedious in detail, the book offers readers interested in 19th century Ireland an important history.

(Ahhh, Neal.)Geely’s strength is in the characters she corrals onto the page (though some strut. Looking at you, Kaylan.) Every one of them reads like they’re standing over your shoulder admiring their own hair, criticizing yours, or tripping over things not reasonably tripped over.Her other strength (though I’m sure she has many), is humor. Even when you think you know the punchline, she throws a different one at you, giving you a black eye and a sore stomach from laughing. Don’t ask how that works; just buy the book and understand. Thankfully, this is only number one in The Finnaly Trio Trilogy so there will be plenty more Neal, humor, and Schadenfreude to enjoy.

Fun story, plenty of cheek and silliness By quesy Fun story, plenty of cheek and silliness, which I think is somewhat lacking these days with fantasy stories. Neat characters and such overall. Bit surprised on some of the events regarding the dragon, don't think I've ever seen that sort of thing before, though I think that it makes this better for doing it, even though some might think it odd or gross.

Phyllis's friendship with Roxanne is delightful, reminiscent of Anne and Diana's in Anne of Green Gables, although Roxanne is more sprightly the Diana. Phyllis herself is a delightful heroine, with a wonderful quaint voice - she's meant to sound quaint; it's not just an artifact of the fact that the book was written a hundred years ago, though doubtless that amplifies it. Passages like this:"I went in to unfasten Roxanne's dress and to get mine done likewise, then I could slip home through the garden, which is always so lovely with the moonlight making ghost flowers of Roxanne's ancestral blossoms."Ghost flowers: a lovely picture. Another quality I love in books of this time period is that sensitivity to nature, the lovely descriptions of flowers and trees and the strong sense of place. Modern teenage and children's books often seem to take place in Anywhere, USA, which is unfortunate. All places, no matter how dull and featureless they may feel, are specific.

I mostly love this author, but the book was written at a period when there was racial discrimination, which you will occasionally bump into in her work. Also, sometimes the scanning leaves some errors in the text.

I am a sugar addict so I had to try Banana Cream Pudding the moment I saw the recipe, but I will definitely also tryout other meals for losing weight as well.

Plenty of spelling and grammar mistakes which makes it a bit tedious to read. Also some recipes don't correspond with the carb counts. The nachos recipe doesn't specify quantities at all but still claims to be 5 carbs a serving. How big is a serving? How much cheese do you add? Could be a lot better, on the whole.

There is a ton of tasty recipes from breakfast to dessert, daily recipes inside the book for you to explore! Not only does the book provides great tips and " how to " steps by steps recipes, but also includes nutrition information for each recipe. The book is top notch and very practical.

Although we are not vegan, my wife and I decided to start doing a meatless day during the week and we needed some new receipes to use, so whu not grab a vegan cookbook. Definitely glad we got this one. We have tried a few of the recipes so far and we love the potato curry and the mexican bean burgers. Both are very easy to prepare and truly delicious. Another thing I love about the book is that it contains the nutrition information for all of the recipes. The author did a great good of putting this together. If you are looking for vegan recipes, definitely grab this book.

By Tracy Although I am not a vegan (I believe in embracing a plant-based diet but I respect the fact that everybody should have their own freedom of choice to find the right type of diet that works for them), I do highly recommend the recipes included in this book. Each recipe includes nutritional information which I appreciate, so that I know what I can get from each dish. Hot and sour soup tastes great; and vegan lemon poppy seed scones taste just wonderful ;)

One of the most famous aspects of Thomas Mann’s prose style can be seen in the use of leitmotifs. Derived from his admiration for the operas of Richard Wagner, in the case of Buddenbrooks an example can be found in the description of the color – blue and yellow, respectively – of the skin and the teeth of the characters. Each such description alludes to different states of health, personality and even the destiny of the characters. Rotting teeth are also a symbol of decay and decadence because it implies indulging in too many cavity causing foods. An example of this would be Hanno’s cup of hot chocolate at breakfast.Aspects of Thomas Mann’s own personality are manifest in the two main male representatives of the third and the fourth generations of the fictional family: Thomas Buddenbrook and his son Hanno Buddenbrook. It should not be considered a coincidence that Mann shared the same first name with one of them. Thomas Buddenbrook reads a chapter of Schopenhauer’s The World as Will and Idea, and the character of Hanno Buddenbrook escapes from real-life worries into the realm of music, Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde in particular. (Wagner himself was of bourgeois descent and decided to dedicate himself to art.) In this sense both Buddenbrooks reflect a conflict lived by the author: departure from a conventional bourgeois life to pursue an artistic one, although without rejecting bourgeois ethics.

The German was easier to understand than I had thought. I knew that Thomas Mann is like many authors, Charles Dickens, for example, using extensive descriptions and difficult words. The vocabulary became more difficult, however, and I gave it up. The head of the Buddenbrooks family often spoke Plattdeutsch, which I didn't understand. He also spoke a lot of French, which I did, since I majored in French. It's probably an interesting novel if your German is really good. Mine isn't bad, but not up to par for this book. It was recommended to me by a German couple it know.
