Fully illustrated. Samuel Birley Rowbotham, under the pseudonym 'Parallax', lectured for two decades up and down Britain promoting his unique flat earth theory. In this book he lays out his world system. Rowbotham believed that the earth is flat; that the continents float on an ocean which has a layer of fire under it; that the lands we know are surrounded by an infinite wilderness of ice and snow, beyond the Antarctic ocean, bordered by an immense circular ice-cliff. The Zetetic Sun, moon, planets and stars are all only a few hundred miles above the surface of the earth. Needless to say, to make his system work, the author had to throw out a great deal of science.

Need You (The Winters Family Series Book 2), by Terra Kelly

About the Author A romance nerd at heart, I tend to find inspiration in my dreams, or when walking my dog.  My love for romance goes all the way back to when I was 15, and laying on my best friend’s bed reading romance books.  It only took me 25 years to start putting all my stories on paper… well, actually a computer.  I was born and raised in Michigan, now live in the South in North Carolina.  So my accent sounds like a Yankee with a slight Southern drawl.  When I am not writing you will find me reading, or baking. My real-life romance started when I was just 19.  Now, over 20 years later, my husband is not only my lover but my best friend.  We only raise furry kids, we have one dog and two cats.  Our animals are all rescues. I am a foodie, who loves creating recipes.  Over four years ago I started a food blog at CafeTerraBlog.  My love for food is why each of my books will always share new recipes made by the characters. I love connecting with my followers.  You can find me on Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, CafeTerraBlog, Pinterest, or at my website. The healing power of love By Margaret Ann Loveday If it’s a romance you are after with a bit of sizzle (it was a bit too much detail for me), plenty of food and a sweet story of love lost and found, then this book will satisfy.Even though I haven’t read Terra Kelly’s first book in the Winter’s Family Series, this book can stand alone and if you like this you’ll want to read the rest.Alyssa and her daughter Lexie, who I might add, is a most loveable and clever little preschooler, move to a small town and open a café, far away from home, family and memories, after Alyssa loses her beloved husband Derek in an accident that leaves her both physically and emotionally damaged; her daughter Lexie is her lifeline to carry on.Here we see another example of the healing power of love when Alex comes to town to be chef at Alyssa’s café; Alyssa and Lexie find love, as Alex is extremely understanding, his family very embracing and Alyssa’s family is restored. It is an easy read for a mature audience.

By Karen Lea Need You is the second book in The Winters Family series and my favourite.I loved Alyssa and her daughter, Lexie from the very first moment I starting reading their story. Alyssa’s world fell apart when her husband dies in a tragic accident and she’s left with a daughter to raise on her own. She needed to escape her hometown and the memories and ends up in Boise, Idaho where she opens a new café and starts a new life. When the story picks up two years later, she is living with her beautiful daughter, who stole my life and she’s made new friends. But Alyssa still had moments when she feels like something, or someone, is missing from her life. That someone could be Alex, the youngest Winter brother, who also happens to be the new chef?Alex lost his job and girlfriend in Los Angeles and he wants to make a fresh start in a new town with a new job. Little did he know that they weren’t the only changes he would make in his life.Need You is one of the books that you can’t put down. It contains a story that makes you feel and also makes you hope. I had moments when I cried a little, but then I would smile. The important is that I finished this book with a smile on my face.I gave Need You 5 stars.Written by Karen from A Thousand Lives Book Blog

Second Helpings of love at Lexi Eats Cafe By Diana Page 1st off, I received this book as a prize in a contest, that being said this is my second book of Terra Kelly's to read and it's just as good as the first if not better. It can be read as a stand alone, but I believe it's better read after the first book Catch Me , as you get your first glimpse of Alex and the whole Winters family in it. Alex is an Executive Chef who has seemingly lost everything, his job and his girlfriend. So he picks up and moves to Boise, Idaho to take a position at Lexi Eats Cafe and that's where the love story starts.Alyssa is a woman who ran from her previous home in Michigan with her young infant at the time, Lexi. She had just lost the love of her life and Lexi's father in a car crash that injured her physically as well as mentally, , and she couldn't stay one more minute where she was, she drove hours, stopped in Boise and never left.Fast forward 2 years and in walks her new chef Alex, and his whole family. It wasn't love at 1st sight but it was definitely something neither of them were looking for, throw in precocious little Lexi and you have the makings of a wonderful HEA. This story is a must read if you like your books filled with love, laughtet, food, family and yes a few tears. Looking forward to book 3.

In this literary work (published posthumously in 1927) Marcel Proust is dying. He, looking at the photographs of his youth and brings to mind at that time. He remembers his mistresses and is aware of the transition from the great war reach society as a whole. The memories move freely back and forth in time: we find Proust in various historical periods that interacts with Odette, with the beautiful Gilberte and her husband, with the lustful Baron de Charlus, with his lover Albertine and with the most disparate characters in his life. This volume includes a noteworthy episode describing Paris during World War I….

But that said: 1] this change of translators is not made clear (i.e. so far as I can tell it is indicated only during the introduction on the recording itself --for example, neither Audible nor Amazon mention it in their blurbs for the recording); and 2] I wish that the original publisher (Naxos) and/or reader (Jason) had selected a published version of a translation for this recording (that is, so far as I can determine, Whiting's translation is not otherwise available aside from this recording).

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The Perfect Gift for the "Janeite" living in your home By William D. Curnutt I purchased this journal for my wife, who loves Pride and Prejudice and everything Jane Austen. She was thrilled with it. As a journal the story will be whatever you write in it, BUT, this "Novel Journal" is exactly that. The novel, Pride and Prejudice, is written in small type and thus makes up the lines of the Journal that you will write in. The text is so small that at first I thought the lines of the journal were poorly done because the ink wasn't constant. BUT, then when the realization dawns that the lines are the text I was amazed. NOW, the text is so small that I needed a magnifying glass to read it (at my advanced age), but younger folks might not have that problem. This is a very interesting concept and thus makes this a unique gift. The binding is well made and does not appear to have any space issues or tearing apart issues, at least at this time. The Leather Cover is nice to the touch, it is engraved with the beginning chapter of Pride and Prejudice running across it like a book (and around the Title of the Journal). Thus another unique aspect of the journal.Like most journals there is a strap that wraps around the book to hold it shut, that strap is attached to the back cover and thus you pull it to wrap around the entire book when you are through writing. The inside has a page where you can add your name to let everyone know who this journal belongs to, my only question is will you put your real name or your "pen name" or the name of your favorite Jane Austen Character? There are plenty of pages for journaling, so that will not disappoint. The price seemed high to me at first, but now that we have it I think the price is just right for the product.Enjoy!

The concept of being able to write between the lines of your favorite book is very fun. The book is surprisingly well made, I did pay less buying it at a club, but even still it's one of the nicer journals I own (and I own a rediculous amount of journals...) cute easy gift for any writer or literary type. :)

One Sunday in March they had been marooned at the club, Steingall the painter and Quinny the illustrator, and, having lunched late, had bored themselves separately to their limits over the periodicals until, preferring to bore each other, they had gravitated together in easy arm-chairs before the big Renaissance fireplace. Steingall, sunk in his collar, from behind the black-rimmed spectacles, which, with their trailing ribbon of black, gave a touch of Continental elegance to his cropped beard and colonel's mustaches, watched without enthusiasm the three mammoth logs, where occasional tiny flames gave forth an illusion of heat.

If you look on the internet, you will find many definitions of clean eating and many lists of foods included and excluded in a clean and healthy lifestyle.

One thing that most sources agree on is that “clean eating” is not a fad diet, it is a permanent lifestyle. Forget about watching carbs, counting points, and restricting calories and learn to nourish your body with natural, wholesome foods.

A clean diet includes fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, whole grains, beans and legumes, nuts and seeds, healthy fats, and low-fat dairy products.

When eating a clean diet, you should buy natural or organic ingredients that do not contain additives, preservatives, or unnecessary extra ingredients. It is best to buy fresh ingredients, but some packaged or canned items are ok, just be sure to read the ingredient label!

By Broadway Turk Superstar There are many who would consider Rudyard Kipling the patron saint of India, and nothing could be closer to the truth. Although Kipling was no Gandhi, nor an inventor, researcher or builder, he did more to convey the British experience in India than perhaps any other writer. It was a time when India was still an English colony, and as was their custom, their settlers steadfastly held onto their culture while trying to assimilate into the society behind their heavily-guarded walls. Kipling ventured beyond these walls to learn the language, live among the people and share enough of their experiments to write this testimonio for the ages. The author spent seven years in India and would easily have been acclaimed Poet Laureate after Tennyson had he not drawn the ire of Queen Victoria for referring to her as "The Woidow of Windsor". His travels were world-renowned, telling of a land where people held onto their ancient beliefs in gods and demons, experienced metaphysical relationships with the wild beasts that abounded throughout their jungles, and honored friendships, family ties, duties and obligations with loyalty unto death. The 'sahib' was treated as royalty, and Kipling never once took the prestige lightly. The author pays tribute to his hosts in these ten short stories that immerse the reader into a society and culture nearly forgotten by our 21st century generation.Moti Guj - Mutineer is the tale of an elephant, a story of a beast of burden with the instincts of a dog that could have only happened in India. The Maltese Cat narrates a game of polo played with the savagery, competition and integrity by a have-not team that would have done justice to the National Football League. William the Conqueror depicts a devastating drought leading to a brutal famine that tests the limits of both Indians and Englishmen alike. Kipling's narrative tells how both comunities join together in humanitarian efforts to help the impoverished that would have made Mother Teresa proud.Rudyard Kipling's love for India and its people not only defined him as an adventurer and philanthropist, but left Western culture with an unparalleled history of the English-Indian relationship of the 19th century. Kipling's India is an insightful and unforgettable collection to be enjoyed by all.

Perfect for busy people By Giselle Lamoureux This book proves to be useful because it is packed with some incredible tips on saving money and time by preparing your meals ahead of time. As a single parent, time is always a precious commodity, and buying in bulk and preparing quick meals is so important to a family that is on the go all the time. There are times when I am too tired to cook for meals after a long day’s work and finding this type of pre-prepared sort of meal made it easier cooking for the family. I like the easy meal plans and time efficient ways to prepare them without having to worry about what to cook for the next meal.I have been a single parent for almost six years and I raised my 3 children all by myself. There were times when I cannot afford to pay for a nanny to look after and cook for my kids. So I need to rush home right after work to cook dinner for them. There were also times when I just have to buy ready-made foods from the grocery or fast foods. I know too well that those foods are unhealthy and I do not want to serve them to my kids but sometimes it is really not an option.I was browsing through amazon when I saw this book. I read through its comments and said to myself that I will give this book a try. Surely, I did not regret buying it. I learned a lot about freezer cooking and which foods can be frozen and cannot. This cookbook offers a way of planning out meals weeks in advance and freezing them. Just pull out the meal choice from the freezer in the morning, all the prep work already done just cook and serve and you've prepared a delicious meal for your family. It greatly helped me to have time for my children and I now have more time to enjoy a bottle of beer and watch my favorite sports channel during weekends. What surprised me about this book were the recipes that can be easily made in a single weekend to get ready for the upcoming busy days ahead. I could use the wide variety of delicious recipes, such as waffles, soups, pizzas, burgers, etc. Plus, it contains nutritional information. I like the way the book is laid out, making it clear and I could easily find sections that I would like to spend more time on. The recipes are great. I am so happy that I have so many great options to serve my guests and family from this book. My children definitely love the burger and pizza recipes.I highly recommend this book especially to people like myself who try to keep it simple when cooking. As someone who cooks for the family and has a hectic schedule, this book gave me a lot of great new ideas to try and I can say the recipes for the breakfast, lunch, and dinners were just excellent.

By Rachele Barksdale Although the book is brief, the author has supplied me with valuable information about make-ahead freezer meals. I have already tried freezer cooking only twice, but this book supplied me with more ideas I could use.As I read through the book, I have learned the things why I screwed up the last time. Most of the time, I cook in bulk and freeze on a regular basis, keep an inventory list on top of my freezer, decide what I am eating the next day and defrost in the fridge the night before. This particular book gives a nice organization on how to purchase in bulk for cooking. The dinner recipes are very tasty and quite simple to prepare. Most freezer cookbooks have a lot of cream of mushroom soup type ingredients and the entrees are largely casseroles. Not this book. This book has a great variety of recipes with higher quality ingredients. The recipes from this book are new unlike other freezer cookbooks. Aside from its large number of recipes, the tips and guidelines found in this book are priceless. I strongly bet that anyone who follows this book can save up more money and time.I have tried some of the recipes and it turned out great. I also do not need to rush home to cook dinner or buy ready-to-eat fast foods. I can even invite some of my friends over for dinner. I would recommend this book, but I think this book is improper to beginners. On the other hand, I think beginners are welcome to try some of the simple recipes. I find some recipes which are sophisticated and that beginners may have a hard time implementing them.

I spent long hours in the kitchen preparing foods for my kids, believing that I am serving nutritious foods for them, but I always ended exhausted. My friend told me about this book and recommended that I read because she felt that I need to change my cooking habits. At first I would just shrug that idea but soon curiosity got the best of me.I discovered that this book is perfect for a busy mother like me. I have never noticed how stressful I am until I tried make-ahead freezer meals. I definitely love this cookbook and I wish it had been available decades before. I can now have more time to relax and enjoy life even more. This book is full of enticing recipes, tips, and knowledge on how to save time in the kitchen. Despite this, you can still serve your family with delicious meals every now and then.I would commend Miss Andrea Huffington for writing this awesome life-changing book. I like the way she encourages the readers that it's worth it to fill up your freezer with meals and foods you will really use and not toss later when they are freezer burnt. I read through this in one sitting and surprisingly, I got several ideas I had not thought of. I would greatly recommend this book to anyone, especially busy mothers who have busy lifestyles, but want good and healthy food.

In this brilliant exploration of our cosmic environment, the renowned particle physicist and New York Times bestselling author of Warped Passages and Knocking on Heaven’s Door uses her research into dark matter to illuminate the startling connections between the furthest reaches of space and life here on Earth.

Sixty-six million years ago, an object the size of a city descended from space to crash into Earth, creating a devastating cataclysm that killed off the dinosaurs, along with three-quarters of the other species on the planet. What was its origin? In Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs, Lisa Randall proposes it was a comet that was dislodged from its orbit as the Solar System passed through a disk of dark matter embedded in the Milky Way. In a sense, it might have been dark matter that killed the dinosaurs.

Working through the background and consequences of this proposal, Randall shares with us the latest findings—established and speculative—regarding the nature and role of dark matter and the origin of the Universe, our galaxy, our Solar System, and life, along with the process by which scientists explore new concepts. In Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs, Randall tells a breathtaking story that weaves together the cosmos’ history and our own, illuminating the deep relationships that are critical to our world and the astonishing beauty inherent in the most familiar things.

Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs: The Astounding Interconnectedness of the Universe, by Lisa Randall

Review “Successful science writing tells a complete story of the ‘how’-the methodical marvel building up to the ‘why’-and Randall does just that.” (New York Times Book Review)“A cracking read, combining storytelling of the highest order with a trove of information on subjects as diverse as astrophysics, evolutionary biology, geology and particle physics. What’s remarkable is that it all fits together.” (Wall Street Journal)“The universe, Randall eloquently argues, is an organic thing, a symphonic thing, with all its myriad parts contributing their own notes.” (Time Magazine)“Randall succeeds in guiding the reader through the history of the cosmos and the Earth from the Big Bang to the emergence of life as we know it in a fun and captivating way. . . . [This is] a very enjoyable read for both lay readers and scientists.” (Science Magazine)“The nature of the impactor remains unknown, but if it was indeed a comet dislodged from the Oort Cloud, then Randall’s book provides an entertaining and radical explanation of the events leading up to their ultimate extinction.” (Philadelphia Inquirer)“Through Randall’s brilliant research we see a universe unfold that is far grander than anyone at any time could have imagined… She is a progressive thinker, a visionary capable of bridging the vast gulf between speculation and reality science.” (San Francisco Book Review)“Randall, a Harvard professor, is one of the world’s leading experts on particle physics and cosmology. In Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs, she takes readers on an illuminating scientific adventure, beginning 66 million years ago, that connects dinosaurs, comets, DNA, and the future of the planet.” (Huffington Post)“Brilliant and thought provoking…The greatest strength of Randall’s book is that it lacks any overly academic jargon and is reasonably easy to understand. Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs illustrates beautifully that there is so much left to be discovered about ourselves and the universe that we call home.” (BUST)“The nature of the impactor remains unknown, but if it was indeed a comet dislodged from the Oort Cloud, then Randall’s book provides an entertaining and radical explanation of the events leading up to their ultimate extinction.” (Physics World)“The nature of the impactor remains unknown, but if it was indeed a comet dislodged from the Oort Cloud, then Randall’s book provides an entertaining and radical explanation of the events leading up to their ultimate extinction.” (WHYY Radio Times)“Mind-blowing. . . . If [Randall is] correct. . . . it would be a revolution in human thought every bit as gargantuan as that precipitated by Copernicus. (House of Speakeasy Blog)“The nature of the impactor remains unknown, but if it was indeed a comet dislodged from the Oort Cloud, then Randall’s book provides an entertaining and radical explanation of the events leading up to their ultimate extinction.” (On Being with Krista Tippett)“[Randall’s] is a fascinating, tantalizing theory, linking life on Earth-or the extinction thereof-with the very origins of our universe.” (Publishers Weekly, Starred Review)“Engrossing in its own right, this theory opens onto an illuminating survey of the cutting-edge science now deployed to test its components, including its daring redefinition of dark matter. As she did in Warped Passages (2005) and Knocking on Heaven’s Door (2011), Randall delivers intellectual exhilaration.” (Booklist, Starred Review)“Writing in a deceptively chatty narrative style, Randall provides a fascinating window into the excitement of discovery and the rigor required to test and elaborate new hypotheses. A top-notch science book from a leading researcher.” (Kirkus, Starred Review)Only Lisa Randall can take us on such a thrilling scientific journey—from dinosaurs to DNA to comets to dark matter and to past and future of our species. Randall’s research is so thorough, the story so powerful, and her storytelling so compelling that I could not put this book down.” (Siddhartha Mukherjee, author of Emperor of All Maladies)“The nature of the impactor remains unknown, but if it was indeed a comet dislodged from the Oort Cloud, then Randall’s book provides an entertaining and radical explanation of the events leading up to their ultimate extinction.” (Walter Kirn, author of Blood Will Out and Up In the Air)“The wonder and curiosity Lisa Randall so obviously feels about our world and the universe itself is evident on every page. [Randall] render[s] complex subject matter into a gripping page-turner that is impossible to put down. Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs is a fascinating, mind-expanding experience.” (Augusten Burroughs, author of This is How and Running with Scissors)“Lisa Randall has produced an intriguing, insightful book that brilliantly weaves together the disparate subjects of cosmology and biology. . . . A simple, elegant theory that finally makes sense of mass extinctions. A must read for anyone interested in the precariousness of life on earth.” (Jack Horner, MacArthur Fellow and author of How To Build a Dinosaur)“Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs is . . . a masterpiece of science writing: a detective story that illuminates the nature of scientific research while explaining how our very existence may be connected to unexpected properties of the dark matter that fills the universe.” (Kip Thorne, Feynman Professor of Theoretical Physics at CalTech)“A provocative and revealing account of how scientists like herself are uncovering deep connections between human existence and the wider universe. A terrific read.” (Timothy Ferris, author of Coming of Age in the Milky Way and Seeing in the Dark)“World-renowned physicist Lisa Randall brings a fresh twist to one of the world’s oldest murder mysteries, the death of the dinos. With lively writing and wonderfully accessible explanations, she now convincingly implicates a new suspect as ultimately responsible for the hit: a novel kind of dark matter.” (Max Tegmark, physicist and author of Our Mathematical Universe)“It’s a tall order to cover everything from the Big Bang to today’s ongoing Sixth Extinction in a consistently engaging way for a general audience. Particle physicist Randall delivers, peppering serious science with anecdotes about Roombas and fortune cookie messages.” (Discover Magazine)“By grounding one in the principles of cosmology, particle physics, geology, astrophysics, paleontology and meteoritics, Randall provides the reader with a broad spectrum look at not only the world around them, but the worlds around that world, the galaxies and galactic clusters, filaments, sheets and, eventually, the Universe.” (Paste)

From the Back Cover

Bestselling author of Warped Passages and Knocking on Heaven's Door and one of today's most influential and highly cited theo-retical physicists, Professor Lisa Randall once again effortlessly delivers fascinating science to the general reader. Weaving together the cosmos' his-tory and our own in an expanding intellectual adventure story, Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs takes us from the mysteries of dark matter and our cosmic environment to the conditions for life on Earth.

Sixty-six million years ago, an object the size of a city descended from space to crash into Earth, creating a cata-clysm that killed off the dinosaurs, along with three-quarters of the other species on the planet. What was its origin? Randall proposes it was a comet that was dislodged from its orbit as the Solar System passed through a disk of dark matter that is embedded in the plane of the Milky Way. Her research challenges the usual assumptions about the simple nature of dark matter and demonstrates how scientists formulate and establish new ideas. In a sense, it might have been dark matter that killed the dinosaurs.

With her unique and wide-ranging perspective, Randall connects dark matter to the history of the world in the broadest terms. Bringing in pop culture and social and political viewpoints, she shares with us the latest findings—established and speculative—regarding dark matter, the cosmos, the galaxy, asteroids, comets, and impacts, as well as life's development and extinctions. Randall makes clear how connected the planet is to the makeup of the Universe, but also how fragile our place in the Universe, which evolved over billions of years, might be.

In this brilliant and fresh exploration of our cosmic environment, Professor Randall explains the underlying science of our world in the breathtaking tale of a Universe in which the small and the large, the visible and the hidden are intimately related. Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs illuminates the deep relationships that are critical to our world as well as the astonishing beauty of the structures and connections that surround us. It's impossible to read this book and look at either Earth or sky again in the same way.

What Goes Around Comes Around By Paul Moskowitz At one time it was said that Lisa Randall was the most cited theoretical physicist with about 10,000 citations. This is no easy achievement. She has now written a fascinating story about dark matter. Her previous books were: “Warped Passages” about the role of extra dimensions and “Knocking on Heaven's Door” about the Higgs particle. The latter contained the best explanation of the Higgs that I have read. This new book requires less of a technical background to understand. It is the easiest to read.“Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs” combines stars, galaxies, comets, meteors, particle interactions, and of course dinosaurs. What could be better? The book is well written and totally fascinating. We know of the existence of dark matter by its effects on ordinary matter, in particular, through the rotational speed of galaxies, and also by its role in the gravitational lensing of light. Dark matter permeates the universe. There is five times as much dark matter as there is ordinary matter. We also think that the dinosaurs died 66 million years ago when a large meteoroid, e.g., comet or asteroid, crashed into the Earth. Is there a connection between dark matter and the extinction of the dinosaurs? Did a dark matter disk lying in the plane of our galaxy nudge the meteoroid into a collision course with the Earth? As an atomic/nuclear physicist I am captivated by the idea that dark matter may form atom-like objects. Once you have self-interacting dark matter, everything else follows: the galactic disk, period passage of the solar system through the disk, the meteoroid nudge, and the tragic end of the dinosaurs. However, I think that we will have to learn more about dark matter. Satellite observations of the motion of stars may tell us about the disk of dark matter. More about the nature of dark matter may be revealed at the LHC or at the bottom of a gold mine in South Dakota, a land once ruled by dinosaurs.

Spellbinding Account of Cutting-Edge Physics, Astrophysics and Geology By John Kwok Noted theoretical and experimental physicist Lisa Randall offers a spellbinding account of her current research into dark matter and how it relates to other cutting-edge science in astrophysics and geology in her latest book, “Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs: The Astounding Interconnectedness of the Universe”. This is a riveting exploration into how science is done, describing in ample detail not only her research, but also notable ones from paleontologists, planetary geologists, and other geologists pointing to the likely culprit for the terminal Cretaceous mass extinction (66 million years ago). The “Great Dying” that wiped out nearly two-thirds of Earth’s biota, not only the non-avian dinosaurs, but also other terrestrial organisms and those dwelling in the late Cretaceous oceans, ranging in size from relatively miniscule single-celled planktic foraminifera to titanic mososaurs resembling the one in the film “Jurassic World”. An extraterrestrial culprit, a comet, its motion disturbed enough by unseen dark matter, altering its remote Oort Cloud orbit into one spelling doomsday for much of Earth’s biota. As the subtitle of “Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs: The Astounding Interconnectedness of the Universe” suggests, Randall covers much ground in her lucid explanations of relevant aspects of cosmology, planetary geology, paleontology and particle physics, frequently relying on pop cultural and political references recognizable to American readers. She literally boldly goes where no one else has gone before in her informed scientific speculation, proposing that a unique form of dark matter was responsible ultimately for the great K-Pg – for Cretaceous/Paleogene – mass extinction. Dark matter which may explain why geologists and especially, paleontologists, have observed cycles within the stratigraphic and paleontological record, approximately 32 million years in length, that have some correlations with higher rates of extinction on a regional, if not global, scale. As a former invertebrate paleobiologist, I am surprised and delighted by Randall’s coverage (Chapters 11 and 12) of the five great mass extinctions during the Phanerozoic Eon (the interval of geological time that began approximately 540 million years ago and continues to the present.); it may be the best I have seen so far in a popular science book. She also excels in explaining how a new, catastrophic, view of Earth’s geological history has supplanted a more traditional, uniformitarian, gradualist view championed by geologist Charles Lyell that had its most notable expression in Charles Darwin’s version of the theory of evolution via Natural Selection, which remains the core of the Modern Synthesis (current) evolutionary theory in biology.Randall stresses repeatedly the importance of scientific teamwork, noting how the extraterrestrial agent for the terminal Cretaceous mass extinction – a comet - was identified by teams of geologists and astrophysicists, most notably the University of Arizona planetary geology research group led by Bill Boynton and his graduate student Alan Hildebrand, which stumbled upon the Chixculub impact crater off the coast of Yucatan, Mexico, starting with studying the stratigraphic record in relevant rock formations in Texas and Haiti, pointing to the existence of the impact structure. She also describes clearly how University of Chicago paleontologists David Raup and J. John Sepkoski recognized the existence of the five great mass extinctions, proposing an extraterrestrial impact of an asteroid or comet as the “smoking gun” for the terminal Cretaceous mass extinction. She concludes with an almost memoir-like recounting of the history behind her research team’s work on dark matter, offering evidence and well-reasoned scientific speculation pointing to the existence of a new form of dark matter. If for no other reasons than these, Randall’s explorations into how science is being done in astrophysics, particle physics and the geological sciences demonstrate why “Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs” is a notable new book of popular science, and one of the most notable new works of nonfiction published so far this year.(EDITORIAL NOTE 12-17-15: Noted vertebrate paleobiologist Donald Prothero is a friend, and I urge all to buy and to read his terrific books on paleobiology, evolutionary biology and the importance of skepticism as it pertains to promoting better understanding of science. However, in his review of physicist Lisa Randall's current book, he has dismissed recent scientific research supporting the asteroid/comet impact theory of the terminal Cretaceous mass extinction, which noted science journalist Elizabeth Kolbert devoted an entire chapter to in her brilliant "The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History", which remains the best popular scientific account of the five mass extinctions known in the Phanerozoic Eon, the last approximately half billion years of Earth's history.)

Bold, fascinating, beautifully written exploration of the questions we must ask to understand the universe and our world By Laserjet fan I’m one of the many types of people this book was written for. I’m the type that has trouble retaining scientific concepts in my head for longer than five minutes or so. Which is why I’m glad that one of Lisa Randall’s special talents is explaining complicated ideas in a way that even I can understand. And actually enjoy. And hopefully remember. Moreover, the very breadth of her vision and her goal here is astounding (like the interconnectedness of the Universe!). What she herself had to study, learn about, and gain an understanding of in fields far beyond her native physics is impressive, but necessary to elucidate her speculative but grounded theories. She’s always been a pioneer so it’s especially exciting to be along for the ride as she contributes to a new interpretation of what was (and could in future be) a cataclysmic event. As someone who not only “commits” science but is capable of explaining it so well, Dr. Randall always seems to add a layer in her writing that emphasizes not just her theories and discoveries but the very process that underpins them. And she doesn’t see science as a thing separate from our culture in general. She’s always connecting them. Frequently in an amusing, and always thought-provoking way. This focus on how we know what we know, and what we don’t know, and how we can go about learning more is something that is very much needed in the world. With this book, Dr. Randall adds another strong argument for why we need to science the s—t out of the challenges we face today (as The Martian would say).

Author Lisa Steele is one of the most trusted voices in small-flock poultry keeping. Her first book, “Fresh Eggs Daily,” was all about healthy, natural care for chickens. Now comes “Duck Eggs Daily,” an equally valuable guide to raising ducks for eggs and companionship. This is also a book for chicken keepers who want to add ducks to their flock. While ducks can live happily with chickens, ducks are different in many important ways. Steele provides an information-packed, beautifully photographed how-to for raising – and living with – happy, healthy ducks. She examines every aspect of her ducks’ lives, including duck houses and pools, health care, duck behavior and blending ducks into a chicken flock. She provides a breed chart and a selection of favorite recipes using duck eggs.

What’s behind the fast-growing interest in raising ducks? An increasing awareness of the superior nutrition and taste of duck eggs (compared to chicken eggs) and a desire for a personal connection with the foods we feed our families. Foodies and chefs are embracing the appeal of duck eggs. And many doctors recommend duck eggs for people allergic to chicken eggs.

Review

“I have a duck and goose farm and sell hundreds of thousands of
ducklings and goslings a year – yet I found Lisa's book fascinating
and couldn't put it down! Great description of ducks and their lives, evident hands-on knowledge, fantastic suggestions, very practical recommendations, and charming observations of her ducks
and their actions. This book provides not only the necessary how-to’s but the equally important Laugh and Enjoy Your Ducks chapters.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is considering a quack,
a splash, and an entertainer in their back yard or on their farm.” -- John Metzer, owner, Metzer Farms Hatchery

"As someone who has kept ducks off and on my entire life I find it bewildering that they are often overlooked as candidates for the home flock. They can be easy to keep, prolific egg layers and endlessly amusing to have around. Lisa and I share equally our enthusiasm for ducks and her book sets the homeowner on the right path providing both the knowledge and confidence for success." -- P. Allen Smith, host of PBS's "Garden Home."

"If you're ready to move from the wonderful world of backyard chicken-keeping to raising ducks, you couldn't ask for a better friend and mentor to have by your side than Lisa Steele. With the care and attention she gives every member of her flock and the sage advice she passes along to the poultry community, any bird in her care is, well, a lucky duck." -- Rachael Brugger, Managing Editor, HobbyFarms.com and UrbanFarmOnline.com

“When it comes to ducks, Lisa Steele knows her stuff, offering up the insight and advice you will need to raise happy, healthy ducks. Whether you're nurturing ducklings or wondering what to do with your windfall of duck eggs, Steele's book offers gentle guidance on the art and science of keeping these beautiful, rewarding animals.” -- Felicia Feaster, Editor-in-Chief, HGTV Gardens

Lol so not and now all the rest of the world told that same little white lie can turn to Lisa's amazing book. "[...]and humanely handled. After a long and somewhat chilling silence, amid the pipes and beer, the landlord opens the conversation "by saying in a doubtful tone to his cousin the butcher:— "'Some folks 'ud say that was a fine beast you druv in yesterday, Bob?' "The butcher, a jolly, smiling, red-haired man, was not disposed to answer rashly. He gave a few puffs before he spat, and replied, 'And they wouldn't be fur wrong, John.' "After this feeble, delusive thaw, silence set in as severely as before. "'Was it a red Durham?' said the farrier, taking up the thread of discourse after the lapse of a few minutes. "The farrier looked at the landlord, and the landlord looked at the butcher, as the person who must take the responsibility of answering.[...]".

Very quotable, very intelligent and ultimately too rich By Phred I think it was Christopher, the first to post an Amazon review of this the Kindle Edition of Views and who brought it to my attention. I got it on the theory that much of Henry James can be too densely written for my taste, but that I wanted something by him I could finish. This taste has whetted my appetite, and has confirmed my cautions. This short selection of reviews by James provided me with more quotable material in fewer pages than any writer this side of Shakespeare. By the end I was fighting my way through needlessly convoluted sentence structure and a notion that Henry James really like to hear himself. In an early selection he describes a writer as: "not offensively clever" a wonderfully clever turn of phrase. He has little good to say of Walt Whitman saying of him: " He tell us in the lines quoted that the words of his book are nothing. To our perception they are everything and very little at that." Nicely written burn. What exactly are we to make of:" ...the critics taking notes as we may in the interests of truth, George Elliot belongs in that class of pre-eminent writers in relation to whom the imagination comes to self-consciousness only to find itself in subjugation." Say Whaa? For at least 2/3 of this brief selection I was in a state of astonishment that Henry James could use such a vast vocabulary with such precision. And then... and then. James will often scold a writer for phrases that "Smell too much of the candle?" a lovely way to describe an obviously forced but intended to be casually remark. Yet James's reputation is that he would labor over his texts only slightly more than he expected of his reader.I will be reconsidering writers such as Kipling, given the adulation he receives in this collection. I am all the more leery that Henry James can write with too much smell of the candle. Further he can be complex for no obvious reason except to fill more space on the way to making a point.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Henry James wrote for money. By Christopher (o.d.c.) Date of the collection: 1908. Each review is preceded by its original publication date.George Eliot's poetry? Tennyson's dramas? An outright pan of Walt Whitman, and OUR MUTUAL FRIEND? Are the reviews Henry James wrote in the 1870s and 1880s worth reading today?Consider this, on the essays of Swinburne:Mr. Swinburne is a dozen times too verbose; at least one-half of his phrases are what the French call phrases in the air. One-half of his sentence is always a repetition, for mere fancy's sake and nothing more, of the meaning of the other half—a play upon its words, an echo, a reflection, a duplication. This trick, of course, makes a writer formidably prolix. What we have called the absence of the moral sense of the writer of these essays is, however, their most disagreeable feature. By this we do not mean that Mr. Swinburne is not didactic, nor edifying, nor devoted to pleading the cause of virtue. We mean simply that his moral plummet does not sink at all, and that when he pretends to drop it he is simply dabbling in the relatively very shallow pool of the picturesque.Henry James liked metaphors and similes. Some of those he comes up with are very striking:Our Mutual Friend is, to our perception, the poorest of Mr. Dickens's works. And it is poor with the poverty not of momentary embarrassment, but of permanent exhaustion. It is wanting in inspiration. For the last ten years it has seemed to us that Mr. Dickens has been unmistakeably forcing himself. Bleak House was forced; Little Dorrit was laboured; the present work is dug out as with a spade and pickaxe. As I look over my highlights, I find this general statement on the value of criticism, which holds as true today as it did in the 1870s:"... The tendencies of our civilisation are certainly not such as foster a preponderance of morbid speculation. Our national genius inclines yearly more and more to resolve itself into a vast machine for sifting, in all things, the wheat from the chaff. American society is so shrewd, that we may safely allow it to make application of the truths of the study. Only let us keep it supplied with the truths of the study, and not with the half-truths of the forum. Let criticism take the stream of truth at its source, and then practice can take it half-way down. When criticism takes it half-way down, practice will come poorly off."
