I liked that it was straight to the point without going too deep into the science of low carb. I also liked some of the recepies. What was lacking was that there was no real guidance about what calorie/carb level one shoud strive for. Also, this being a book that promotes low carb high fat you would think the recipes would at the very least have carb counts. But unfortunately it doesn't. Finally, the Conclusion read as follows: "Throw something together here for the conclusion. Summarize a bit." Even for a cheap Kindle book I would expect better than this.

The book explains what keto diet is, which is very beneficial to beginners. They the book proceeded in relating keto diet to weight loss. A chapter also focuses on the exercise that can be done when in the keto lifestyle and the keto diet recipes? They. are. so. delicious! I have tried a couple and I am liking what I tasted. Good job here!

With a wink at the Reverend Minot Weeks who stood by the door leading to the street, he tapped with his knuckles on the showcase. "It has," he said, waving attention to the boy, who was making a mess of the effort to arrange Uncle Charlie's loaf into a neat package, "a pretty name. They call it Norman—Norman McGregor." Uncle Charlie laughed heartily and again stamped upon the floor. Putting his finger to his forehead to suggest deep thought, he turned to the minister. "I am going to change all that," he said. "Norman indeed! I shall give him a name that will stick! Norman! Too soft, too soft and delicate for Coal Creek, eh? It shall be rechristened. You and I will be Adam and Eve in the garden naming things. We will call it Beaut—Our Beautiful One—Beaut McGregor." The Reverend Minot Weeks also laughed. He thrust four ringers of each hand into the pockets of his trousers, letting the extended thumbs lie along the swelling waist line. From the front the thumbs looked like two tiny boats on the horizon of a troubled sea. They bobbed and jumped about on the rolling shaking paunch, appearing and disappearing as laughter shook him. The Reverend Minot Weeks went out at the door ahead of Uncle Charlie, still laughing. One fancied that he would go along the street from store to store telling the tale of the christening and laughing again. The tall boy could imagine the details of the story. It was an ill day for births in Coal Creek, even for the birth of one of Uncle Charlie's inspirations. Snow lay piled along the sidewalks and in the gutters of Main Street—black snow, sordid with the gathered grime of human endeavour that went on day and night in the bowels of the hills. Through the soiled snow walked miners, stumbling along silently and with blackened faces. In their bare hands they carried dinner pails."

A successful copywriter and business owner, Anderson s experience of a nervous breakdown precipitated his abandonment of his business and family in order to pursue a full-time writing career.

Anderson went on to produce more than twenty published works in his lifetime, including the enduring short-story collection, Winesburg, Ohio, and his semi-autobiographical style served as an influence for some of the brightest writers of the succeeding generation, including Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, William Faulkner, and Thomas Wolfe. Anderson died in 1941.

By Lady Diva I don't know what happened here, but while the cover page shows this to be a cast iron cookbook, the inner content is a vegetarian cookbook - although one of the recipes is for broccoli and HAM salad. This wasn't just a bad quality book or one full of mistakes and typos, this was not at all what it was supposed to be. I'm not out any money, as it was a free download, but still an annoying waste of my time...

I thought being on a paleo diet would be difficult but it has been great so far. I haven't seen as much change in how i feel mentally and physically as other diets i've tried.

From School Library Journal Grade 2-6-- Haley retells nine Jack tales in this collection that provides a kind of sequel to her Jack and the Bean Tree (Crown, 1986). Once again, she uses Poppyseed, a mountain woman, to provide the framework for the stories. The selections come from Haley's grandmother, and have changed over time as she herself has heard versions from other countries and from such mountain tellers as Ray Hicks. The origins and influences on her stories are discussed in an afterword, as is the process of creating the art. Like Richard Chase's The Jack Tales (Houghton, 1943), the stories feature a North Carolina dialect (a glossary is provided), but Haley's voice is more matter-of-fact, less ironic, and there's less dialect but it seems more artificial. Each story is illustrated with one or two bland, black-and-white wood engravings that seem too stilted for what should be lively tales. Young readers will find these offerings accessible; older children, teachers, and storytellers will appreciate Haley's background information and may incorporate it into their own oral tellings. Campbell I don't know what that reviewer was thinking who rated this book one star, she must have had a bone to pick. I've read many volumes of folktales from all over the world, and this one's a gem. It borrows classic themes in folk literature and lets them float down through an Appalachian sifter. And the wood engravings are wonderful and apt given the great wood carvings from eastern North Carolina and the Smokies. I didn't grow up in this part of the country but didn't find the language obtuse. Besides, there's a great glossary of terms in the back. Well worth a read. I'm adding this one to my collection!

Haley, Mountain Jack Tales is a simply wonderful collection of short stories written in the classic style of the great folklore yarns of old, and focusing on the adventurer called Mountain Jack, and his fantastic exploits against ogres, card sharks, stubborn witches, and even Old Man Death himself. Flavorful and upbeat language mark this highly enjoyable, enthusiastically recommended compendium of original tall tales that are certain to entertain and please readers of all ages!

Out loud fun By Joanna Hardin I was lucky enough to hear the author tell her stories as a young girl and it made such an impression on me and my entire family that we bought the book on the spot. It is such a fun and amusing twist on the Jack and the Beanstalk tales. Now I have a young son of my own and want to share the same fun stories at bed time. I HIGHLY recommend this for all ages because it's just so darn fun to read out loud, especially for those of us that like to use accents and funny voices to accentuate story time with our children.

Love the mix of information and sassiness and sauciness. Like the author, I am a beet virgin too. My dad always planted many but I think I thought a vegetable that wasn't green like peas and beans was just weird. This cookbook shows that you can do so much more than just pickle and can them. When they are in season, I am going to buy some and try in some hashbrowns. Also interested in trying the beet cake and beet yeast bread. Thanks for expanding my beet horizons, Merry!

If you are researching the Fey, this is a must By cammykitty Not a book for someone who doesn't have much background in the English, Scottish and Irish fairy lore simply because Briggs will refer to common folktales that you will know if you've read a lot. But if this is a new interest for you, you'll want to have at least read your Yeat's folktales first.If you are trying to get a good understanding of fairy lore because you are writing a piece of fiction or some other reason, this is the perfect book. First, she splits the fairy folk into two different types -- the diminished gods and the dead. I hadn't thought about the fairy connection to the dead, but once I read this, I knew she was right. She does a wonderful job at making sense of a hodge-podge of tales from several locations and time periods, complete with all their contradictions. And if you've ever wanted to know what fairies eat, she will tell you. And what they do for fun too. When Katherine Briggs passed away at the ripe old age of 82, the world lost a great resource.

By Linda Pagliuco Meticulously researched narrative about the variety of fairy types, that were, and in many cases still are, prevalent in the beliefs of the British people. If you think all fairies are adorable harmless creatures like the Flower Fairies or Tinkerbell, you ought to take a closer look! Nothing is trickier, or more dangerous than a fairy, no matter how beguiling he/she appears. She's trying to entrap you and make you her slave forever!Liberally enlivened with stories from believers, some who say they have actually encountered a fairy of one type or another, Ms Briggs' book is especially interesting in light of the recent popularity of books and films based on traditional folklore (Tolkien, Rowling, CS Lewis, to name a few). Readers of The Fairies in Tradition and Literature will be able to spot time honored themes and characteristics, and will often be able to predict outcomes in modern stories based upon folkloric history. Another sort of mystery - great fun. Guard your children well!

Traditions of fairies vary widely depending on the location and time period, which can create serious confusion for the beginner. Enter Katharine Briggs: The Fairies in Tradition and Literature provides a clear, excellently organized introduction to fairy folklore and allusion in the UK until 1967.The first section, called "The Fairy Peoples," answers all the basic questions. What exactly are fairies? Where do they come from? What do they actually do? What do they eat? What is their relation to humans? Briggs is thorough; she identifies subtle differences in traits from different localities, and includes sections on related mythical creatures as well.The second section, "Traffic with Fairies," explores human meetings with fairies. It reveals an unusual bit of information about fairies studies: that fairies have a special sort of dependence on humans.The final section summarizes appearances of fairies in literature from about the eighteenth century on--the previous major writers having been covered in Briggs's earlier book The Anatomy of Puck. Her remarks on how the influence of writers and other nations' fairy lore change the perception and essence of British fairies are perspicacious and brilliant.Briggs likes to summarize some point within a sentence or two, and then back it up with abundant anecdotes. The book is extremely heavy on footnotes and includes a comprehensive bibliography. For quick reference, one appendix lists all the "Fairy Types and Individuals" along with their native location and the name of the main source. Clearly, this is a valuable resource.However, this book receives only four starts because the scholarly tone does not lend itself well to a general audience. The academic writing is sometimes rigid and boring. I wish I could recommend this excellent book to anyone, but I can't because it reads like a textbook. That said, it's the first textbook you should read if you want to study fairies.

The individual volumes don't have tables of contents, or at least I haven't found them, that that is awkward, but the volume of works for the price still makes it worthwhile.
